    Hi Fred, another great time capsule. Yes I did see most of these shows, changing cast members never really surprised me. If the show was good it was good for the show. I really like your work . Our generation saw the best of the best in television.

    Dick York didn't quit, he was fired by the network. He had a seizure and went into a coma while rehearsing a scene. Producer William Asher refused to let York go and wanted to wait for him to get better, but he was under pressure by the network to replace him because he was too ill to return back to work and they didn't want to wait for him.

    You forgot to mention that on Family Affair John Williams was only a temporary replacement and Sebastian Cabot returned to the role of Mr.French later. Actually it was one of the rare times that both actors fit the role perfectly,( I always thought Williams would had made a great Alfred for Batman).

    What about Joseph Kearns, who played Mr. George Wilson on "Dennis the Menace"? Kearns passed away toward the end of Season 3, and was replaced by Gale Gordon (later "Mr. Mooney" of "The Lucy Show" as George's brother, John. Nobody died in sitcomland in the 60s, so they had George moving away to Florida (or some place like that).

    Joseph Kearns as George Wilson, Gale Gordon as George's brother, John Wilson, Sylvia Field as George's wife, Martha Wilson, and Sara Seegar as John's wife, Eloise Wilson.-----Dennis the Menace

      @kachoo2135 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dennis the Menace was never the same after Joe Kearns died. I always looked forward to hearing him use the expression Great Scott, and now he has me doing it.

    • @Nash1a
      @Nash1a 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, but that wasn't Gale Gordons fault. Not to take away from the significant contributions of Joe Kearns, I think by the time Gordon came onboard, Dennis had started to age-out of the role. Its one thing when a 5-9 year old has an "oops" moment. You kind of have to forgive him because you know he didn't really mean it and he's just so dang cute. But once a kid gets bigger and can think through the consequences of his actions, his "oopsies" stop being so cute. Granted Joseph Kearns chemistry with Dennis was just wonderful... "Martha! Where's my nerve medicine?!?!?" But Gale Gordon looked too young to play the same feeble retiree that Kearns did. He had to reinvent the role to some degree. So "Great Caesars' Ghost!" just didn't cut it for you, huh? LOL. I loved Gale Gordon, mostly for his playing Lucy's foil for so many years. I also really have a thing for Sylvia Fields. Her voice and accent sounded exactly like a dear Grand-Aunt of mine, not to mention that they looked a lot alike too, But the voice was uncanny. And now when I can no longer remember my Aunt - she died 30+ years ago - I can still see the slightly prettier Sylvia Fields and it take me back to my childhood.

      I was too young to notice that much of what you are talking about Nash1a, because, I was like four when I realized that the show was on tv and would watch it. It reminds me of staying at my grandparents' house. When my grandparents would lay down to take a nap, my grandma would put the tv on, and whoever was staying with me at the house, we would watch those shows.

    Random thoughts: Dick York's departure from "Bewitched" was very sad, because it was health-related. Ironically, Dick Sargent had been offered the role first, but turned it down...William Frawley was, by most accounts, a pretty mean bastard. I'm surprised he was able to make it on a show with kids...I always wondered why the producers of "Mission Impossible" couldn't figure out a way to work around Steven Hill's religious observance of Saturdays. There were six other days in the week when he could've been on the set, and they could've shot around him on Saturdays. Obviously the producers of "Law & Order" had no problems figuring it out, and he was great on that show for 10 years...Leonard Nimoy went straight from "Star Trek" to "Mission Impossible" when "Trek" was canceled, but before he took the role he contacted Martin Landau to make sure Landau was finished with the show. When Landau said he was, Nimoy committed to "MI". I liked him in the role of Paris, but I don't think the show was as a good as it was with Landau and Barbara Bain...I used to love "The Wild, Wild West", and Ross Martin as Artemus Gordon. That first heart attack in 1968 nearly killed him, but he survived and came back. Strangely, his death came as a result of another heart attack that occurred just after he played a game of tennis. I've never been able to figure out why a 61-year old man with a heart condition would've been involved in such a strenuous activity. The "Wild, Wild West" was canceled by CBS as a sop to the U.S. Congress, which at the time was investigating violence on TV as a cause of violence in real life. Nearly 50 years later we're still having the same debate...I don't remember ever watching "Lassie", but she sure went through a lot of families. And talking about replacement players, all of the dogs who played Lassie were male because female collies go into heat twice a year and shed quite a bit of their coats at the time. That made them unsuited to the demands of the production schedule...Part of the changes in "The Doris Day" show came from the CBS "rural purge" of the early '70s, when they canceled rural- and family-based shows. With the Womens' Movement came changes in the way career women were presented, so Doris went from a widowed mother of two to a single woman without kids, who were eliminated from the series and never spoken of again. In the real world, that would've earned her an investigation by the police...The cast changes on "The Andy Griffith Show" came about under happy circumstances, as characters left the series for their own spinoff shows or movie careers. I never thought Don Knotts was ever as good in anything else as he was as Barney Fife, and I never understood his appeal as a movie star, even in Disney kids' movies. And the less said about Mr. Furley, the better. However, it was nice to see him round out his career as the mysterious TV repairman in "Pleasantville"...I've seen the performances of Pert Kelton and Sheila McRae as Alice Kramden, but Audrey Meadows is, was, and always will be the definitive Alice. Her chemistry with Jackie Gleason was awesome to watch...The first Mrs. Kravitz was funnier, in my opinion, but sadly Alice Pearce died of ovarian cancer during the second season of the show. Amazingly, while she looked much older, she was only 48 when she died...I always preferred Mike Evans' portrayal of Lionel Jefferson, but he left "The Jeffersons" primarily because he was a producer and writer of "Good Times", which was running at the same time...As much as people remember Chevy Chase on "Saturday Night Live", they forget that he was a cast member for just the first season. His performances in that single season were so memorable that it always feels as if he had been on the show much longer than he was...I think Wayne Rogers as Trapper John McIntyre would've made more sense on "Trapper John, M.D.", since he had played the role on "M*A*S*H", but he turned it down so he wouldn't be typecast as a doctor. I don't think the rest of his career after "M*A*S*H" was as good as it could've been, but he was a financial whiz and made a ton of money in the stock market so he never had to worry about making a living in show business...Funny, but as good as McLean Stevenson, Wayne Rogers, Larry Linville, and Gary Burghoff were in their roles, I've always felt that "M*A*S*H" got better from every one of its cast changes...An aging Joan Crawford appearing on "The Secret Storm" in a role played by her daughter has to be not only the most laughable casting choice in history, but also the biggest indicator of Crawford's insatiable ego and panicked desperation at that stage of her career.

    • @Cowboy1959
      @Cowboy1959 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She was indeed blacklisted, which caused her to be dropped from the "Honeymooners" sketches. Audrey Meadows replaced her, and the rest is history. Frankly, Audrey's performance as Alice is what made the show, because her sassy wit and iron backbone was the perfect balance to Gleason's bombast.

    • @Sheri451
      @Sheri451 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read in a book about My Three Sons that Bill Frawley had an X rated mouth to match his personality Stan Livingston said that during the first season as they were filming the Thanksgiving episode Bill was cursing about something on the set, and was using the F bomb and screaming GD it. and he was also having the boys throw pots and pans at the set of The Lucy Show to torment Vivian Vance, whom he despised, but she despised him too. Lucy should have fired him for the things he did, plus I read that he was so drunk toward the end of his time on My Three Sons that Tim Considine had to stand next to him or sit next to him to keep him from falling down.

      yes, but it wasn't immediate, I believe there were several season's when it was just the three of them. I never cared for the Candy character. Around the time Pernell Robert's was threatening to leave, they wrote in a cousin "Will Cartwright" played by Guy Williams of Zorro fame, who they wanted to replace as the Adam character. Diff'rent Strokes started with Charlotte Rae as housekeeper Edna Garrett who was replaced by Nedra Volz as Adelaide Brubaker, who was later replaced by Mary Jo Catlett as Pearl Gallagher, the last of the three maids.

    My favorite replacement scenario: cousins. Of course, if you have three people living together as roommates (Three’s Company), and one moves out, it only makes sense that their cousin, who kind of looks like them, would move in to take their place. Or “The Dukes of Hazzard” (which could have been mentioned) when Bo and Luke Duke left, only to be replaced by their eerily similar-looking cousins Coy and Vance Duke, who then drove around in the General Lee and got chased by Boss Hogg, never missing a beat, until the originals returned a season later and replaced the new guys. All perfectly logical in the realm of TV.

      The story behind "Hazel" is that the powers that be didn't let Don de Fore and Whitney Blake know that they weren't rehiring them. They found out from the newspapers. I guess the producers or who whoever handles the money, didn't want to pay them what they were due, so they hired the "Little brother" and his wife and daughter for cheaper rates. I read that some months ago, because I was watching the reruns on Cozy TV and I was curious as to why all of a sudden, George and Missy went to Saudi Arabia and left Sport with George's little brother? Not nice the way they treated Don and Whitney.

He was no Curly, but he had some very funny moments, and he was certainly better than the guys who followed him, especially the awful Curly Joe Besser (who never should've been added to the act). I think Shemp also deserves a lot of love and respect for putting his own successful career in movies and shorts on hold to help the Stooges maintain the act. He was only going to stand in until Curly got better, but since Curly never recovered Shemp stayed with the Stooges for 9 years, until his sudden death in 1955. I admire him for that.

After Williams guested, Roberts signed for one more season and Cousin Will Cartwright was married off, never to be seen again, even after Roberts left. • @Dimeropepe
      @Dimeropepe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you're absolutely correct about "A Face in the Crowd" (1957). It marked the debut of Andy Griffith, who was playing a phony television star who used and misused people(especially Patricia Neal) to remain at the top. This biting film was loosely based on the controversial television star at the time, Arthur Godfrey, who, in reality, wasn't a nice and good humored fellow that he portrayed on his show. Also, a young and lovely Lee Remick made her debut in the movie as well.

    • @Dimeropepe
      @Dimeropepe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was Julius LaRosa getting fired on air by Arthur Godfrey. Now, it's only speculation at the time, but the reason is that LaRosa's popularity was threatening Arthur Godfrey. Now, Lee Remick did great in "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959) starring James Stewart dealing with a murder in a small town in Michigan.

      Yes, I saw it many times on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). The film was nominated for Best Picture of 1957. It didn't win. Pernell Roberts had decided to leave Bonanza and they brought in Ben Cartwright's nephew Will Cartwright to replace him.
    He was played by Guy Williams. Williams was in several episodes of Bonanza but then Pernell Roberts decided not to leave the show and Guy Williams moved on to loftier roles. He eventually was lost in space.
    And in the end he was really lost in Argentina.

    • @Dimeropepe

      Guy Williams played Zorro in the late 1950s in the Disney's version on ABC-TV long before he went on "Lost in Space" (CBS; 1965-1968). As for Roberts, he wanted to branch out on his own and didn't want to be "typecast" in the long-running western television show. I think this happens a lot when television shows become monster hits and last too long, such as "Wagon Train," "Bonanza" , and "Gunsmoke".

    • @ProudKansan08

He wanted the show to be about social injustice and fixing it and all that stuff, since, I guess he was one of the late 50's and 60's social justice warriors, and the writers weren't interested in that stuff. It was a Western, not a show about revisionist history. And he had problems, which I don't blame him, with white actors playing Chinese parts or Indian parts or some other minority part. He also didn't like that he had to wear a toupee since he was bald and that he had to say "Pa" when he was a few years younger than Lorne Greene. So, he was a trouble maker from the start. He wanted out of his contract, but, it was ironclad, therefore, he was stuck, and as soon as the four or five year time was up, he was out of there. He never really did anything after that. Perhaps he did theatre, but, I think he sort of shot himself in the foot when he didn't renew his contract on Bonanaza. Michael Landon was rude to anyone who came in to fill the void of Adam. Thought that was immature on Landon's part. Here, all this time, thought he was such a great guy, and find out years after he died, that he was an egotisical lout.

      I don't know why Pernell Roberts had such a hard time with the little age difference. He thought he was such a great actor and he couldn't deal with him being only 13 years younger than Lorne Green. Look at Mama's Family. All the adults were older than Vicki Lawrence and had no problem relating to her as a 60 something year old.

    Wow, that was terrific. I am a very sentimental person, one of the things wrong with modern culture is a disparagement of sentimentality, but that was beautiful, sentimental journey into a wonderful land of nostalgia. To quote Bob Hope, "Thanks for the memories."
    Also, you could have mentioned Richard deacon replacing the great Roger Carmel as Roger on The Mothers in Law.

    In addition to replacing Darrin and Gladys, "Bewitched" replaced Irene Vernon with Casey Rogers as Louise Tate. Vernon was friends with producer Danny Arnold, when Arnold left due to "creative differences", Vernon was persuaded to leave too. Mary Alice Canfield (Ralph on "Green Acres") played Abner's sister Harriet for several episodes after Alice Pearce died before Sandra Gould was cast as Gladys. Darrin's father, Frank, was played by Robert F. Simon, then Roy Roberts before Simon resumed the role. When Marion Lorne died, the role of Aunt Clara wasn't recast but Alice Ghostley was later introduced as Esmeralda who also struggled with her magical powers.

      "Oh my Stars!" has new meaning now. I never liked the chemistry between Agnes and Dick Sargent. He played a bolder Darren who was not afraid of Endora and it seemed illogical to me considering their history. Dick York could play bold too; but a kind of nervous energy bold a little like Don Knotts which made his portrayal more believable to me. Its too bad what happened to Dick York. He just passed away in the last 2 years or so but lived with a chronic degenerative back disease all his life which caused him to seclude himself. He only went public a few months before his death to talk about the disease and promote research.

      I loved York as Darren. But yeah Sargent just didn't do it,and no chemistry with Samantha either. I loved how York would get flustered and it's a shame his back pain made him leave

      I never liked the new Darren. Thought he was such a party pooper stick in the mud with absolutely NO sense of humor and just wasn't funny as the other Darren was. He was so flat, where Dick York was energetic and ALIVE. I also read not too long ago, that Dick Sargent was originally going to play Darren, but, there was some scheduling conflicts. I'm SO glad because I probably wouldn't have watched the show if that stick in the mud, Dick Sargent played him. Even as a four year old when that show came out, I liked York's Darren. I thought he was ugly, but, I still liked him and thought he was funny. And I liked the original Gladys Kravitz. She was so ugly she was cute. The other one who replaced her was alright, but, I just never liked her as much as I did the original actress.

    John Dehner filled in as the boss at Shiloh Ranch for a few episodes in season four of The Virginian, but his character, named Morgan Starr, came off as too tough and demanding, and lacked the kindly grandfather image the others possessed. He didn't go over too well with viewers.
    William Frawley was dropped from the cast of My Three Sons because his insurance got to be too expensive.

      I don't think Geoffrey would had done it any way. I'm sure he was still grieving. No offense to Roger Davis, who is a good actor, but my choice to replace Pete would have been Dennis Cole, if anybody. Just the same, that role was tailored fit for Pete I don't think anyone could replace him.

    • @brucevale

      Yea I guess I never thought about it in those terms, he could have been grieving or perhaps even thought it wouldn't be right to replace him. I always looked at it from a viewer standpoint, considering they looked so much alike.

    Couple of things of note. While Pert Kelton played Alice Kramnden in the sketches on Cavalcade of Stars, after she was replaced by Audrey Meadows, Kelton went on to play Alice's mother on the Classic 39. As for MASH, while cast replacements were new characters replacing old ones, the most significant change was between season 1 episodes 1 and 3 for the role of Father Mulcahy. In the pilot, Fr. Mulcahy was played by George Morgan but he was replaced by William Christopher by episode 3. Other times different actors played the same character on the same series, on Roseanne, Lecy Gorenson played Becky from season 1 to the middle of season 5. She was replaced in season 6 by Sarah Chalke. Gorenson returned in season 8 but the role flipped flopped between Gorenson and Chalke during the season until Chalke took over the role until the series ended. Also, Eight is Enough. In the TV pilot, David Bradford was played by Mark Hamil. He was replaced by Grant Goodeve for the remainder of the series.

      Pert Kelton did not play Alice's mother on the Classic 39, the actress who played the part was named Ethel Owen. Ethel was the mother of Pamela Britton who played Mrs. Brown on My Favorite Martian. Owen died two months prior to her 104th birthday, talk about a long life! Pert Kelton did play Alice's mother on a episode of 1960's Honeymooners (Sheila Mac Rae was playing Alice by that point).

    Wow! Too many shows to comment on. However, of all the shows, MASH had the most logical reason to explain why cast members left: In the military, when your tour of duty is up, you rotate home (which can happen at any time in the story line). I did prefer Noel Neill over Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane in Superman. For me, Audrey Meadows will always be the best Alice on the Honeymooners. And Frank Gorshin was the the wildest Riddler on Batman. Come to think of it, even Lassie was replaced over the years (with identical appearing dogs).

    • @zoppie
      @zoppie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The funny thing is, all throughout the Lassie franchise (except for the most recent show, which flopped) audiences were expected to believe that it was the same dog from the original film.

      Nahh .... let's agree to disagree -- Phyllis Coates was a much more fetching, hard-driving reporter than Miss Neill (though i say this with bias -- I had the great fortune to meet PC by chance in Carmel Valley, CA -- and was shocked that she was still so attractive some 20 years after ' Superman ' left the air) !

    Great video -- Patrick Macnee also worked with Joanna Lumley in The New Avengers. On Wild Wild West, Alan Hale also filled in for Ross Martin. Lee Meriwether, of course, was Catwoman in the '66 film. The (unaired) Munsters pilot had different actors for Lily (then "Phoebe") and Eddie.

  • @dadoctah

    I know you specifically excluded Dallas, but it adds to a special sub-category of cast replacements like that of Mike and Damon Evans on The Jeffersons, where the original actor returns to the role after being replaced. Barbara Bel Geddes as Miz Ellie was replaced by Donna Reed due to illness, but when she got better she came back. (Same thing happened to Lecy Goranson on Roseanne when she took the role of Becky back from Sarah Chalke.)
    Another special case is where a lead character, the one the show is named after, is recast. It happened on The Adventures of Superboy when John Haymes Newton suddenly turned into Gerard Christopher in the second season, and on The Charmings when Snow Charming (neé Snow White) turned from Caitlin O'Heaney to Carol Huston after one year.
