Drumming in the latter half of this track is outstanding, real “kick ass” stuff. I base most of my assessment of Mr Collins drumming mainly on this, I really don’t think it could be bettered. Bravo, the rest of the band are pretty monumental also.
I’d pay serious money for video of Phil’s drumming here, especially the second half of the song. More proof, if we needed it, that he was immensely talented on the drums.
A long since dumped girlfriend of mine used to tell me (in `77) that this was dated. I wonder what she has to say about it now? I play it even more now than I did then.
Collins really had a beautiful voice. Such a glaring realization when he enters midsection. Then his time to shine on the drum at the end, he's soaring with Banks.
I love it when a band plays a variety of different meters. Some bands don't even play anything in 3/4 time, or 6/8 time. Brubeck launched the odd meter trend with the album Time Out in '59. You can really hear the influence of that album in Jesus Christ Superstar released in 1970. The Temple Song is in seven time. Tarkus in '71 from ELP opens in 5/4. Lark's Tongue in Aspic Part 2 has a great 5/4 theme. Debussey usded 9/8 for Clare de Lune. The Mission Impossible theme is in 5/4. Back then, jazz was often a huge component of pop and especially progressive pop./rock.
Perhaps their best-ever tune. Certainly one of my favorites to play on drums (especially the section in seven, of course). Impressive audio quality--too bad there's no video but this was probably extracted from the band's taped show (certainly too good to have been bootlegged).
How about it. To me he is simply the greatest drummer ever. How many people can do what he has done: drummer singer, song writer, producer, humanitarian and who knows what else.
INOUBLIABLE ! ET...LES PHOTOS 📷...OUAH...🥶🥶🔥🔥😲🙃😉😘✌👋❣🇧🇪
Totally agree about Phils playing here😅His style was still forming in this period ...he layed a fraction behind the beat for much of the time and his grip was looser up to the lamb, maybe it was the weed😆But come 76/77 his pocket was getting more 'urgent' and he was pushing more...then in the 80s he became very precise again...in my opinion anyway...I love it all....Also love Brufords interpretation of first half on secs/out....
i'm not agree that Phil drumming in 73 is not same level than 76.Sebtp has excepional technical drumming so as A Trick of the tail and Wind and Wuthering.Listen Dancing with the moonlit knight isolated drumming and you'll remain spechless, for how much terrific, fast, technical, his drumming was at 22 years old.His fascination for Cobham/Tony Williams impossible groove was already there.Obviously with Brand X his fusion style and shred were at maximum level. For Cinema Show live.his drumming was incredible in 1973/74.Feel was different than Seconds Out Version, only him on drum, much similar at studio version, but not below at Seconds Out version. There are some versions at the end of Sebtp tour in America in spring 1974,where his drumming was ferocious, fast ,as there was an octopus behind the kit, with furious rolls in everywhere, and only him behind kit,no Bruford,no Chester Thompson.
Sure there must be somewhere. But I don't make videos that way. 🙂 You may find what you like here, no Cinema Show, though: 😉th-cam.com/video/_FBcz3tBH74/w-d-xo.html

Genesis’s finest hour…

AGREE 100%.....and the Battle of Epping Forest is great as well
Agreed!
You are correct sir, he drummed to the utmost!!
Terrific sound quality. Brilliant musicianship. Phil's drumming is ... leaves me speechless. The young man was certainly in his prime.
Phil's drumming is just so damn tasty

Born in '90, and I'm struggling to find music as captivating as this. When did we lose the magic as a species?
Quite sure it's the best version of the song. Epic. Biblical. Legendary. Bands like these will never come back.
Peter❤

It was Peter Gabriel's voice
@@haraldbrinkies4860 So Phil didn't contribute any backing vocals to this tune. M'kay. 🤑
@@WintersWar As you suspected, Phil's backing vocals are an important part f this song and this performance.
@@mortcola being a long time hardcore fan, I was more definitive than suspect in my remark.
The band really at their best. Steve is there, very important!
I love this song, Genesis as best.
That M400 Mello makes or highlights the tune.. when it comes in in choir mode at 7:43.. wow..
This is a great performance bij the best progressive rock band of all times.
This is great stuff. Thank you.
Great
The instrumental section of this song, like Apocalypse in 9/8 (Supper's ready) and Firth of Fifth MUST enter in the all of fame of history of music.
So clean so good
Those boys could sure play the hell out of those instruments!
And they did it 🙂
Timeless beauty.
Masters ❤
Love Peter ❤️ 😍 💖
It doesn't get much better than that. Beautiful guitar by Hackett and masterful drumming by Phil.
This is a brilliant rendition.

Yes, often overlooked.
I get so damn bored of common time. Complex signatures are where it's at.
Gracias
Amazing 5 piece Genesis. ❤ .....Nothing better imho....Peter, Phil, Mike, Tony and Steve 😊
And these musicians were in their early twenties creating beauty such as this! Incredible! Thanks for posting!

Lovely, simply beautiful. I’ve adored this wonderful tune for 50 years, as well as so many other early-to-mid Genesis songs. Thank you!
Cleanest stereo version I think I’ve heard of this song with Gabriel on vocals!
Another masterpiece.one of they're best. Take a little trip back
Jeez Louise 😮 Phenomenal
Phil on drums. As God intended
I can't imagine a world without his vocals though, lead or backup.
God in heaven, Phil on drums.
How about it. To me he is simply the greatest drummer ever. How many people can do what he has done: drummer singer, song writer, producer, humanitarian and who knows what else.

How have I not heard this particular version until now! Great quality recording and of course, one of the truly great songs of the era.

Every bit as good as the Seconds Out version
Can't believe I have just heard this now , absolutely outstanding. Thank you David.
You're welcome 😉🎶
stupendaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa canzone ...meravigliosi Genesis the best the top
Oh my....collins
yeah on this track Phil did what he should have always continued doing, Play the drums and let others lead the band
Inarrivabili!!!
Would love to see a video of this awesome version with Phil playing close to the studio part.
Why? His drumming on this got better with each tour, much better than the studio version.
Mike and Tony are on 12 strings here too.
Thanks, just added these 😉🎶
and pedal bass too
👌🥰

No video footage of this being performed with Gabriel in the band?
Its barely watchable. th-cam.com/video/eTekx7jJgDw/w-d-xo.html and only contains snippets of concert footage.
