Notice the logo on the handle, that's the famous KA-BAR, U.S. Marine Corp Fighting/Utility Knife, this company was one of the original KA-BAR makers. I bought one from Wal-Mart because I was familiar with the company and the knife looked pretty good in the package, for 10 bucks I had to buy it even though I did not go there for a knife, it was the last one on the rack.I liked it so much I went back and got another, and made a nice leather sheath for it as I just recently got into leatherwork, just to make my own leather goods, not as a business. These knives are worth much more and they are lifetime warranted. One of the best knife buys you will ever make.Get one and be happy!!! Or 2 and be real happy !

I just bought one of these recently. I also bought a leather sheath for it and I really like this knife. This is a really decent knife for the price and it has already come in handy. I have many knives but right now, this one is my favorite in the under $100 category.

I'm no knife expert at all, and I just got back into solo backpack camping a couple years ago. I can afford higher quality, but would rather see how affordable stuff works. I've bought a lot of stinkers just to try out to see...lol. I picked this knife up last year and I also picked up a couple Mora Basics that were on clearance at my farm store. I absolutely love the Moras, however, for medium work this has been my go-to camping knife for multiple outings. I have had good luck with batoning 2"-3" wood, feathering, and ferro rod fire starting. I have a larger Schrade for bigger work, but honestly I love my little Camillus for medium work.

Just want you to know l have the same knife but l really hated the sheath, so I went online to Smoky Mountain Knife Works and bought a made in Mexico 5 inch black leather basket-weave textured knife sheath for $6.99.
I read a lot of reviews on the knife sheath so I knew the strap was on the short side and wasn't going to be long enough to go around the handle on this knife.
It was easy enough to stretch the leather strap the 1/8th of a inch I needed.
The strap is easily removable so I soaked it in Lexol liquid Leather Conditioner for 2 hours then I stretched the strap tightly around a small flashlight for 48 hours.
It worked out perfect, the knife sheath is nice quality, especially for $7. The only bad I can say about the aftermarket leather knife sheath is the five rivets they use in addition to the nylon stitching could have been a better quality, but at least it's riveted and stitched.

Really enjoyed the video Eric. It is a good looking and functional blade and incredible value. As somebody has already said, any knife will last a long time if taken care of. Full marks to you for using it sensibly as opposed to trying to destroy it just because it was cheap like happens on some TH-cam channels.

I got the same knife from Walmart, when l bought it the price on it was 8.97, l believe. With my discount it was just over 8 bucks. So far it's been a very good companion. I live in the country, 23 miles from the nearest town. The only complaint is the handle, but l'm replacing it with Brazilian wood handle. The knife was razor sharp out of the box. I learned a lesson the hard way, cause l didn't think a 8 dollar knife would be sharp. Along with the arm hair came a good piece skin. But l'm very satisfied with the knife as it takes an edge very good, and its done everything l've asked of it.

It would be perfect for putting in one of those “extra” kits we have on hand to give to folks who show up with no gear after the shtf.... most of those kits I have, include either a cheap Mora or old Air Force Survival Knives (used to be able to get them for less than $20).

The only problem I have had with Camillus knives is just the Edge retention. The Camillus knives I have had are built solid for the money. But, the blade dulls incredibly fast. I guess if someone also bought a decent diamond sharper it wouldn't be bad as a budget survival blade or something. But, do not expect that edge to last very long.

  • @redriver6541

I've got a few of both of these myself. For the money they're not bad. Same as you....I have these stashed here and there in various kits and places. Also like you....my Spyderco's are my EDC preference. I'm a total fanboy for that brand....and Cold Steel follows a close second on some of their higher end knives. Good review man. Thanks for posting.

I LOVE my Camillus (exactly as the one shown). They are a bit of work to sharpen, and need a bit of work when you get them (the bevil is wonky), but are a strong and durable knife. The weirdest thing is that at first blush, one would think they would/could be scandi grind, but you couldn't make it scandi grind if you wanted to, the angle of the blade just won't allow it. Works well for basic bushcraft and even a decent skinner. Shockingly good product for Walmare and the best knife under $30 I've ever owned!

  • @escapetherace1943
    @escapetherace1943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nice pretty much my thoughts on it too. Better value even than a mora these days, which is kind of sad, but scandi grinds are really... honestly meh...
This knife is thick enough to baton with and never break which is pretty nuts, easy to sharpen. Wouldn't feel bad about touching it up with a speedy sharp and beating on it either.

Otherwise this a decent knife for everyday tasks and will get you through if your caught off guard and need spend a couple days in the wild.

I bought that thing. I dropped my knife I made from 1095 steel and antler handle into Charlotte harbor. Bloop. This knife is fine. It cuts a few times before you need to hone it. A fine mill file ( little four inch file is fine) is the best way to keep this knife usefully sharp. The sheath will fall apart on you quick. Make a leather sheath for it.

  • @Anlushac11
    @Anlushac11 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I've had one for several yeas now. I dont do anything hard core. It is my go to knife for use around the house. The price was right, seems to cut well, and I absolutely love the grip, very comfortable for me. I also like that the spine is ground for use with a fire steel.
If I were to find fault its the IMHO cheap crappy sheath but for $10 it is what it is. Buy a aftermarket sheath with a firesteel holder and its good to go.

    I'm impressed.
Looks like Camillus know what they are doing with their 420 steel.
Edge didn't fold, tang didn't snap & it's easy to resharpen (which I personally think preferable to long edge retention but $$$ in sharpening equipment).
Might even have a slight edge over a Mora, and that's coming from a Mora Man.

  • @dennishein2812

If it just says it’s 440 steel, that means it is 440A which is not a great knife steel but better than other ones out there in knifeland. Camilus used to make some pretty good knives. They still have some good ones that aren’t in their budget line.

I have the old one with the black coated blade. The blade is so thin it feels cheap. I just use it as a utility knife in my toolbox. Works ok as it had a nice rubber handle which makes heavy use work tasks not so hard on the hands. I'll get this knife too and try it out. But these are beater blades and not knives you'd want to use out in the woods or for anything significant. Camillus is actually a decent budget brand. Better than Schrade and SOG imo.

Good beaters, a little thin and brittle for any baton or chopping but good cutters like they were made to be. The sheath always wears out fast, lol.

Well, I went out and bought one. It works. It has a sheath. But, not analyzing it but that little hump in the middle of the handle is right were my finger goes. Not comfortable at all. Hi! I found a knife on Amazon for $30 that looked cool but I thought, cant be worth buying. I couldn't get it out of my mind however, G10 scales, cool design, comes with a universal clip. When I looked at it again I noticed it had 454 reviews with a 4.5 star average rating. Then I noticed quite a few different types of knives from this same brand which I have never heard of, all in the same price range or less and they all have very high ratings. I would be very interested in your evaluation. I just bought this model: Oerla TAC OLF-1009 Fixed Blade.
UPDATE: I received the TAC OLF-1009. It is very well made, full tang 0.1875 thick steel. The sheath fits perfect and shaking it there is no sound or movement. It is also the absolutely the sharpest knife I have received out of the box. It came in a very nice box with a cleaning cloth. The bottom of the knife would be great as a hammer or window breaker. The nice flat area at the top of the blade is not quite a sharp 90 degrees to strike a ferro rod but could be filed slightly to get that but would lose the patina. The one not so good thing about this knife is that the handle is a little short. I have female hands and I think it is a little short. It is a nice small package though. Your pinky would probably not fit on it like mine does. You could add a braided lanyard for more grip or stability. But, VERY worth the price and VERY well made and presented.

It will require sharpening just about every time you use it. It's mostly good for teaching young folks how to handle and sharpen a knife. For low cost knives, stay with Morakniv.

Knives like that are sold at times in the supermarket here in Europe, 10-15 USD. Same steel and design also comes in machete versions and axe versions. 420-440 stainless steel, rubber overmold handle and often a full tang. I did hard testing on those things and they are fine. The sheat is always garbage and will disintegrate quickly. But for an emergency backup-giveaway it is fine. Although I suggest constantly working with the gear you one day might have to rely on so you know it by instinct. If you follow that approach a cheap knife like that makes little sense.

Which 420? J2 or HC . Buck also has a good heat treat on their 420HC. Gerber also uses 420 HC but in my opinion Buck holds a longer edge. J2 isn’t Avery good knife steel as far as I’m concerned.

Now when you can get a Mora or bump it up to $20 for a Bucklite max fixed blade.
Even a packlite which they currently have on their web specials page.

440 was fine for decades until somebody decided they wanted to spend a fortune on super steels that is really good but for what? Opening Amazon boxes? Just my opinion. I remember in the early 80s I guess it was when companies started pushing the different 440 types

420 is not the same as 420HC. Huge difference in carbon content. Plain 420 is better for folding frame parts, not really for the edge.
