      @@MagusMarquillin No, it's not. You literally proved it yourself just there. "Not for any merit that others do not possess". Frodo was chosen by circumstance, not by cosmic design. Being the protagonistt is not the same as being the "chosen one".

      @@thehoogard i think you are both right. Yes, Frodo IS objectively the "chosen one", but Tolkien did NOT think of him as "the protagonist" (that's Sam) and he does not fit all the stereotypes.... . The thing that wailing Lan says to me is that Lan, the embodiment of stoicism, is overwhelmed by the amount of anguish that Moiraine feels despite her greater held composure. There's an interest born of comparison there.

    • @metarra
      @metarra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nothing Moiraine's went through is close to Lan being the last of his line. Bonding transfers part of their consciousness into each others minds, so this is a good time for showing where Lan came from and why he has so much pain buried deep down. It probably came to the surface while it was being transferred to Moiraine. I wonder if it helps Moiraine seem cold.

    • @FlagrantVagrant
      @FlagrantVagrant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@metarra I did not want to take this to a place where we're trying to one-up each other about what character has more valid reasons to feel pain. This is clearly some sort of funeral situation. So, I seriously doubt this has *anything* to do with Lan's story. And Rafe's breakdown states that this is a demonstration of empathy through the warder bond. I believe, if Moiraine's feeling is an iceberg, and what she shows is the above water part of the iceberg, Lan is showing the part that is underwater.

      I think it's the other way around. Lan is hiding his emotions by pretending to just be angry, but we see his real emotions through Moiraine. Also, they're doing a military salute so I don't think this is an Aes Sedai funeral. I think this is ... *spoilers*
      Bukama's funeral.

    • @FlagrantVagrant
      @FlagrantVagrant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lightning_Lance How could this be the case with Nynaeve standing behind Moiraine? I mean, unless it's a wild time edit, and the casting for that has been a well kept secret. Sure, I'm wary of being misled by creative edits in trailers. But Stepin wears a similar white garment in the earlier teaser trailer when weeping over a serpent ring. All possibilities considered, I still place the highest probability on an Aes Sedai death.

    Thank you Daniel for your enthusiasm, I am really looking forward to this series, and a large part of that is thanks to you and your fanboi ways! :)
    Regarding the horror aspects of Winter’s Night: in the books the reader doesn’t get to see much of it, the point of view follows Rand and Tam, and what they have to deal with, and then they turn up in town after most of it has gone down and they just experience the clean up. If the series is going to show the attack directly, which it really looks likely, there is going to be a lot more horror, which I think is a good choice.

      @@Anthony_Cika Also worth noting... Every Aes Sedei can bond one warder at a time. This is not a hard limit, but a convention. The only exceptions are Greens, who can bond as many as they like (cuz they're easy like that), and Reds, who don't bond any warders (cuz they hate men).
      Oh, and (at least in the books) Warders are (almost) exclusively men. Again, not a hard rule, but a convention. Don't know if that will be addressed or changed in the series.
      Browns rarely leave the tower, and when the do it is usually to go to some great library somewhere. They bond warders largely based on the ability to carry stacks of books.

    So here's the way I would do channeling - it should be viewed through the perspective of the character involved. What does that mean? If the character cannot see the weave or flows then we should just see the effect of the channeling on screen. Now, once we get later in the series, as Rand, Egwene and Nynaeve learn more, we should then see the weaves and flows. I think that would be unique and give depth to the magic. Thoughts?

    When it comes to the channeling, after rereading the first couple of books, I’m hoping that the look of the channeling evolves with the understanding that we receive throughout the books. While I can live with the visual to the channeling and think the "corruption" in the context of this representation looks good (I also agree that "taint" would have been a bad choice in 2021), I would have preferred actual "weaves" with less cosmic-pulling-power-from-the-surrounding-universe vibe to it. A lot of the story and plot points are the wondergirls and Rand leveling up as the story progresses. Their ability to replicate weaves upon viewing becomes less believable when they looke like this. Also, given how much emphasis on relative strength in the One Power there is, I'm hoping that that is also represented in the visuals for channeling. Kerene would be top of ranked, followed by Moiraine, Liandrin, Alana - in that order. Also, the number of people it takes to shield various other channelers has at least one major plot point associated later, so I hope they're as clear about this early in the story to setup that later point.

Nynaeve and Egwene went along for other reasons. I know they are trying to up Nynaeve and Egwene because of feminism, but the books did it way better. They were secondary characters who, through hard work, determination, and stubbornness become important key characters.

Which has Lan and Moiraine in mourning white over the deaths of pretty much every single person that is close to a certain someone. Along with a certain woman in blue failing to do something that devastates her internally.
    Is it against Lans character? Definitely. But given Rafe's explanation, and the reality that we don't get inner monologues in show form, I think it all makes sense.

      Or could be working the other way round - Lan has lost Bakuna and others who raised and were the last link to his family. I think that would be pretty devastating and also if it is Nynaeve and Alanna it allows them to discuss this implication of the bonding to Nynaeve

      @@craftyajah6749 that was the point I was trying to make while being vague when talking about the deaths

    I have finally started reading Eye of the world after the youtube algorithm spamming me with Daniel "goblin" Greene and so far this may be the best fantasy I have read since LoTR. And I've read a fair bit of fantasy but this is on a different level. I cannot wait to get through these books - when should I read the prequel by the way?

      I would say read the prequel after book 5. Without spoilers it's just a good place for it narratively.

      Or you should make sure to read it before the show because it looks like they're including some things from it. It's shorter if I remember right.

      I have just read New Spring after book 5 (The Fires of Heaven), which is a good spot mostly because of where its characters are at in the main series at this point. I think it could be read earlier but I would argue against reading it before The Eye of the World because then you would get some information earlier than originally intended and the book's impact would be different if you are introduced to the characters there first.
      New Spring shows in detail events concerning Moiraine, Siuan and Lan the readers of the main series mostly know about that happened about 20 years before The Eye of the World. (There is a bit more plot that is interesting but does not have much of an impact on the rest of the series.)
      Included in the show are probably just a few flashbacks as seen in the trailer like Moiraine getting raised to Aes Sedai and possibly her bonding Lan, as well as establishing how long she has been on her quest.

    Definitely getting back into WOT because of these videos, not because of the show. Your excitement is infectious and I want some!! Keep up the GREAT work!!!
