Perhaps this isn't fair, as I much prefer several of his other compositions...my limp grad committee chose Time in a Bottle as our song, in 1978. Sorry, but not only were they behind the times, but there were SO many superior options. No wonder I skipped the entire affair...

Chod, It was late 1972. In fact, this song peaked at #17 for the week ending December 9th, 1972. To give you an idea of what it was like to be a music lover in the 70's , let's take a little peek at what was popular at the time. BTW, I was thirteen at this time and been in love with music since the age of 5 or 6. I had studied it in school and by 13 I had a little knowledge. I actually played in my first rock band at thirteen. So, here are some of the songs that accompanied Croce that week on the Top 40 - PAPA WAS A ROLLIN’ STONE -•- The Temptations, IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME BY NOW -•- Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW -•- Johnny Nash, VENTURA HIGHWAY -•- America, I’M STONE IN LOVE WITH YOU -•- The Stylistics, SUMMER BREEZE -•- Seals and Crofts, I’LL BE AROUND / HOW COULD I LET YOU GET AWAY-•- The Spinners, SUPERFLY -•- Curtis Mayfield, DIALOGUE (Parts 1 and 2) -•- Chicago, LIVING IN THE PAST -•- Jethro Tull, SITTING -•- Cat Stevens, YOUR MAMA DON’T DANCE -•- Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, and on & on & on....... You get the idea. Those who are of my vintage know exactly what I am talking about. It was an amazing time for popular music!

Right Chod, Jim had a younger partner named Maury Muehleisen who was described as a “classically trained pianist/ guitarist and singer/ songwriter”. In the early stage of their partnership Jim just played guitar to back Maury, but they changed to the opposite roles when Jim’s talents became more developed. I just learned that sadly, Maury died in the plane crash too, at age 24 (Jim was 30).

Chod, you show such appreciation for music during a time long before you were born. Yes music seems to have lost its way but so has the people who write it. I have had an ear for great music all my life and was blessed with working with some such as Eddie Money, Doug and Stu of CCR, Elvin Bishop, The Rascals Gene and Dino, The Diamonds, Lydia Pence, Many Latin Bands, Oldies Groups to include Al Boyd who helped co-write Standing on Shaky Ground by The Temptations and so on. Times have changed but there are many creative minds out there if only they used it instead of taking the short cuts by rapping out words and not singing them. Music and lyrics have grown dark and hollow as if they have fallen into a blackhole. I am sure you know what i mean. Use your talent Chod and encourage others to do the same. You are a diamond in the rough, don't waste it by telling yourself you can't be like all the greats before you. That drumset you are investing in isn't just there to bang on, hone your skills because your love for music is the key to open doors to what you love and do best.

The man was ripped from us far too young, but you are spot on in your recognition of songwriters writing their own music, something that really came into prominence thanks to The Beatles! That was two guitars you heard, not just one, and Jim does some marvelous live performances which I would highly recommend. No theatrics, just two guys playing guitars and making beautiful music. I think after Jim's hitch in the Army, he became an Over the Road Trucker. He got a lot of his songs lyrics from this experience. Most of the songs are true experiences of his stops along the way between hauls. Just a down to earth sort of guy. His sidekick Maury plays some mean backup guitar. I think that's who you might have heard. Speedball Tucker would be a good choice for the next song. As would many others.

Love this song. Jim came out of what was called the "singer songwriter movement" largely (though not solely) started by Bob Dylan but a CHANGE from the history of popular music where EVERYONE sang other peoples' songs. Songs written by an entire class of songwriting professionals who never were performing musicians themselves. The last of that tradition up until singer/songwriter was the early 60's where you have Motown, Stax, and the last of the New York crowd writing music for groups like Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Shirelles, Dionne Warwick and many, many others. The criticism that today's artists don't always write their own songs is really just a reversion to what really was a much older, longer tradition. Hey, Frank Sinatra didn't write for himself, y'know? Neither did Elvis, actually, only he would insist on being GIVEN a writing credit in exchange for recording someone's tune so he would get royalties for that, as well. The music industry's a dirty business and always has been.

Jim played Rhythm guitar. There was a guy who played with him who's name slips my mind at this age. But the guy who played with him was one of the best acoustic picking guitarist back in those days. Both were killed in the plane crash.

Jim Croce was such an amazing talent who left us way too soon. But the man put out classic song after classic song. Such a pure voice.
Time in a Bottle, New York’s Not My Home, One Less Set of Footsteps and Photographs and Memories are some others you should try.

Jim Croce was a hard working singer/songwriter who was just becoming famous when tragedy struck. He mostly toured with just one other guitarist to back him up. Live shows seemed very intimate, where he would tell stories in between songs of how events in his life inspired the song. It’s sad he left us with only a few albums, but there are diamonds to be found. Try Time in a Bottle, I’ve Got a Name, and Bad Bad Leroy Brown for some of his classics. Cheers!

Jim croces music is so timeless. What first drew me to him apart from him is the excellent guitar playing by Maury Muehleisen.
He added another layer to the music without crowding everything else out.

When I saw this song performed live there was two acoustic guitars. I am pretty sure it was recorded that way as well.

Lover's Cross, I've Got a Name, Time in a Bottle, Workin' at the Car Wash Blues, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song, New York's Not My Home, Don't Mess Around with Jim, One Less Set of Footsteps. To me, the best acoustic singer/songwriter!
And you are hearing 2 acoustic guitars: Maury Muehleisen was his guitar partner! Unfortunately, he died in the same plane crash with Jim.

Probably two guitars, based on videos I've seen. Croce was probably the main guy on guitar, but based on what I've seen, there was someone else there as well. Check out some of his more humorous stuff as well: Bad, Bad Leory Brown; Roller Derby Queen, You Don't Mess Around With Jim, etc. Great storyteller

On September 20, 1973, Croce, Muehleisen and four others were killed in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana. ... Upon takeoff, the plane did not gain enough altitude and crashed into a pecan tree at the end of the runway. According to the official report, the 57-year-old charter pilot had suffered a heart attack.

Back in the day a lot of artists (musicians) had the songs written for them or for any music artist. But I believe Jim Croce wrote his own songs. He was gifted.

Before the 60s (roughly), most singers did not write their own songs. But with the folk movement and probably the beat movement of the late 50's, which brought us people like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger / Peter Paul & Mary etc, the singer-songwriter started to become a thing. You listened recently to Neil Diamond's Solitary Man... well he was just one of the early singer-songwriters that came to the fore in the 60s. The 60s and 70s were a particularly rich time for singer-songwriters. In the 80s, music took a turn for more highly-produced type of music product.
