You NEED to go back and listen to the words carefully. The story is not true, but it is a conglomeration of the events that Jim (pronounced Crow-Chee) Croce witnessed while serving in the military ... on base. In that time, of course, people had no cell phones, and on base, the ONLY phone you could get to was just a few payphones. The problem is hundreds of soldiers trying to call home so the lines were really long and Jim, would hear these men on the phone, but many getting what is the equivalent to a "Dear John" letter, finding you that their wives or girlfriends were with someone else. So, this is why he starts out the song asking for the operator's help. He wants to call them to tell them (his girlfriends/wife and his "best old ex-friend Ray) that he has recovered from the shock of their betrayal, but he realizes that he's just trying to convince himself. One Less Set Of Footsteps 7. Time In A Bottle I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment, and it certainly should get you started. I'm pretty sure you'll love all the "funny" songs listed and positive you'll love at least the first 2 "Sad" type songs. If you DO decide to go down that "rabbit hole" ... Enjoy !!! Slight update: Yeah, the studio of this is actually better ... clearer.
I second the suggestions of Bad, Bad Leroy Brown Don't mess around with Jim Time in a bottle He was one of a slew of tragic losses in the music world, taken way too soon, but not from the effects of personal vices but rather from plane crashes, tour bus accidents, and the like...Big Bopper, Patsy Cline are two others that were lost in such ways. My parents were big fans as teens and my first introduction to him was probably Time in a Bottle when I was in middle school.
I'm 63! Jim Croce = The 70's!❤ Absolutely amazing, nice rabbit hole! Died in a plane crash in 1973 at the age of 30!😢🕊❤ "Time in a Bottle" and "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown" are some of his favorites in the 70's! So talented!😊❤
Jim’s story was so tragic. He was barely able to enjoy the success that he had worked for. He and Maury Muehleisen (the other guitarist) were both killed in a plane crash. Jim was just 30. His other hits include “Time in a Bottle”, “I Got A Name”, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” and “I Have To Say I Love You in A Song” plus more. Jim and Maury’s harmonies were beautiful. A great rabbit hole to go down!
@@katrinacash6393 You know, acts from back in the 70’s especially seem like people & not some superstar. Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Time In A Bottle", "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" etc.
So many great songs. I love Rapid Roy the stock car boy, one less set of footsteps and these dreams too. Like you said, etc.. Phenomenal talent who never saw his true fame. Probably wouldn’t have loved the fame since he was so grounded but living to see his own success is better. R.I.P. Jim. Way too young to die. I can’t imagine how many great songs he would have written but appreciate what we have.
Pronounce his last name as "CROW-chee." Love Jim's music. I see that many others have gotten in here before this, with a bunch of everyone's favorites that Jim also sang. My favorite has always been "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown." Next to that, is "Time in a Bottle." It was a terribly sad day when he and Maury were in the plane wreck...sitting here crying. The same thing happened with Keith Green, and his two older children. His wife runs a website, that carries all of his wonderful, wonderful songs, such as, "So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt," and "Oh, Lord, You're Beautiful." Thanks for reacting. I hope you'll pick up more of his songs...just so good!!!
Jim Croce has such a small discography and you can listen in one sitting and I recommend it. Jim Croce (crow-chee) and his guitarist Maury Muelheisen are phenomenal! Jim was actually a backup guitar player and singer for Maury when Maury released his "Gingerbreadd" album in 1970. Maury helped Jim finished some of his songs and then Jim hit it big. Other songs: "Dreamin' Again" is my personal favorite, "Time In A Bottle," "It Doesn't Have to be that Way," "I Got A Name" (album and song released posthumously), and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song." But you can't go wrong with any Jim Croce song. All of them are good to masterpieces!
I adored Jim Croce and was devastated when I heard on the radio he had died (on my birthday). I was stuck on a road trip with my dad and could not mourn properly. When people do those who would you bring back posts, most say Mercury or MJ or a Beatle or Prince. I always say Jim Croce.
One of my favorite parts is in the third verse when he says "you can keep the dime." And then he sings nothing in the next bar (if that's the right term) -- a spot where he did sing a line in both of the previous verses. To me, that lyricless bar signifies that he is so choked with emotion tat he can't even speak. Genius!
I’ve always heard his name pronounced Crow-chee. He died in a chartered plane crash at the age of 31, after leaving a show. He left behind a wife and 2-year-old son. For his short time in the industry, he had a host of hits. Somewhere on TH-cam, there is a short documentary of his life, that includes an interview with his wife.
His guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, was also killed in the crash. He was just 24. Jim’s son, A.J., is a singer and he’s covered some of his dad’s songs. He sounds a lot like Jim but with a more current style. It’s especially poignant hearing him sing “I’ve Got a Name”. He also did “Time in a Bottle”.
RIP Jim Croce (crow-chee) and I thank him for being one of the guitarists to inspire a 15yo me in 1975 to learn the acoustic guitar. Jim, along with fellow singer songwriters Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Harry Chapin (chay-pin), Janis Ian, and Joni Mitchell, all had very unique and differing styles of finger picking, and strumming techniques. The latter, Ian and Mitchell also were accomplished pianists from the folk music scene. And you're right, there's nothing sweeter than the simplicity of a musician w just their voice and instrument. ❤
Lovers Cross, Photographs and Memories, I Got a Name, New York's Not My Home, Roller Derby Queen, Workin' at the Car Wash Blues, Rapid Roy, Speedball Tucker, One Less Set of Footsteps. You really can't go wrong here. His more popular songs are Time in a Bottle, Bad Bad Leroy Brown and You Don't Mess Around with Jim. Those are fantastic too but the deeper cuts are much better imo. Even DEEPER ones would be Alabama Rain, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song (actually not that deep lol) and A Good Time Man Like Me.
As far as I know, his last name is (was) pronounced "crow-chee". This is my favorite of his songs. Such a loss that they were both killed in a plane crash when Jim was only 30.
One of our hometown hero's. He is from Philly. He had so many great songs. He didn't need a bunch of backround noise. Just him & Maury. Sad ending to great music.
Taken too soon, Jim, Maury Muehleisen (the singer/guitarist accompanying) and four others were taken in September of 1973. Unfortunately so many of his songs didn't achieve the popularity they deserved until after his death. Albums of note "You Don't Mess Around With Jim"' "Time In A Bottle" an anthology and"I Got A Name".
There's also a fantastic video where he and Johnny Cash perform Orange Blossom Special. Roy on the guitar and Johnny two-fisting harmonicas and singing. Absolutely wonderful!
Idk if you caught all the lyrics but it's a sad song. His girl took off with his best friend and moved to LA. He's talking to the operator and asking for her help getting a hold of her. He says the number on the matchbook is old and faded. That's how you took down people's numbers a lot bc most people smoked and had them in their pocket. Then he says that he can't see the number that she just gave him. "There's something in my eye. You know happens most every time", Now he crying. Whew. Then he tells the operator to forget it bc there's no one there he really wanted to talk to anyway. Then he tells her that she can keep the dime. Which means he was at a pay phone and he had put a dime in up to that point - but if your call didn't go through, the operator would somehow release your money back. He told her, "thank you for your time, you've been so much more than kind. You can keep the dime". Any song recommended down below is fire! Amazing song writer/singer/guitarist.
Both he and his backup singer were killed in a plane or helicopter crash. So many bands took planes, and so many died going to or leaving gigs in those early days.
Jim Crow-shee. He was one of my uncle's favorites. Listen to "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" & "Time in a Bottle" among others. Great reaction.
This was the song that inspired me to try to learn guitar. It wasn't until years later that I'd realized it was the sound of two guitars. Their fingerpicking is exquisite and it's a gorgeous arrangement (Maury Muehleisen on the 2nd guitar). I finally learned how to play a comp version of it, but it took a while. I don't grow out my nails, but use my fingertips instead, although I'll play with a thumb pick occasionally - takes getting used to, but it's worth it! Great reaction!
Welcome to the world of Jim Croce and Maury Muhleisen. The musical chemistry of Jim and Maury was unforgettable. Tragic that they died so young, Jim being 30 and Maury was even younger at 24. We still have their recordings to treasure. I hope you look at the suggestions of those who are leaving comments, there are many to pick from.
Jim Crow-chee has great heartfelt songs as well as some great character based novelty songs. I understand that when they first teamed up, Maury was out front. That tells us how good he was. Unfortunately, they both died in a plane crash, as far too many great artists have, just as Jim's music blew up. RIP to two musical greats.
Box #9, ( a letter to his s folks, when he left for music) also Photgraphs and Memories, and New York's not my Home, all must hear Croce! Gone to soon . RIP Jim.❤
His music is simple and pure. A great mix of romantic songs as well as some fun songs like Rapid Roy, that Stock Car Boy, Don't Mess Around with Jim and Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.
If you want to see unique finger picking you should react to Maybelle Carter playing Wildwood Flower. I think it was first recorded by The Carter Family in 1928.
Jim Croce is probably one of the best storytelling song writers ever. He has a bunch of good songs that are timeless. Crow-chee is how I was told it’s pronounced. Tragically lost his life along with the guitar player in a plane crash.
Jim was more or less a duo, his other half being Maury Muehleisen. Jim wrote the songs, sang lead, and played second guitar; Maury sang harmony and played lead. They were both killed in a small-plane crash. A great loss to music.
He died 9/20/73, in a Louisiana plane crash. He was doing a tour of colleges. He was a favorite of us college students all over the country 51 years ago.
SO many great song choices in his catalog!! I grew up listening to him from my early teens on. He died far too young. Just imagine all of the beautiful music that died with him. 😥💔 A few favorites that I'd *highly recommend* - "I've Got a Name" "Photographs & Memories" "Time in a Bottle" "One Less Set of Footsteps"
Hit that button too soon! 😉 Just HAD TO add these! "Lover's Cross" "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" "New York's Not My Home" "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues" "Roller Derby Queen" OK *Any* Croce song is a good pick! LOL
He also had a few upbeat hits, One Less Set of Footsteps, Rapid Roy, and Working at the Carwash Blues. I found Lover's Cross particularly relatable. Breaking off a relationship to protect your own self and sense of dignity.
Jim Croce was a master of his art. He offered so much within his creations. Beautiful, strong & lovely. We used to listen to him while I was growing up & for that I am truly thankful. The gentleman sitting with him was Maury Muehleisen & he too, was a wonder. Appreciations for sharing this.
You should dive down this rabbit hole. Big hits, fun ballods --- Bad Bad LeRoy Brown, Don't mess around with Jim Cry jerker --- Time in a bottle Quirky fun Roller Derby Queen . . . and so much more
Blended family, 70's divorces...remarriages...1972ish...road trips with new sibling arrangements .Jim Croce kept us all from tearing each other apart. A sad, sad day when he died...Amazing guy.
These early 70s songs really surprise me because I was just a little kid and they were always in the background, usually from my Mom's car radio or while she's cleaning house. At the time, I only knew "Operator, would you help me place this call" and would sing along to that part only, everything else after that didn't make any sense to me. I was too young to understand it. As an adult, it's amazing how the lyrics now hit me hard against a melody I knew from childhood and thought was a happy one. It's like having your childhood open up into adulthood and that song came along for the ride 15-20 years later.
One of the great disappoints of my life was not seeing him live. Taken way too soon We were thinking about seeing Gordon Lightfoot (you’d like that, too) but he died a year or two ago while on tour. The great rock stars are leaving.
I had never heard of him or this song. That is the greatest thing about reaction videos-being introduced to new music! I always get really excited when I hear songs and artists I’ve never even heard of. This song was beautiful
A legendary artist that I have enjoyed since he first appeared ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. This man had that it that is so sorely lacking in so much of todays music!!
Jim Crow-chee is how it's pronounced. Another one gone much too soon. His son is now singing his dad's songs. He was a baby when his dad died. His mother got involved with another man and when AJ was 4, this man beat him so badly, AJ lost his eyesight. I believe he's recovered most of it now. I like the choices you're making for your reactions! Keep up the great work!
Every song on this album is great. Glad to see you reacting to him. I learned to play the guitar when I was a kid. A few years ago I learned this song - I play Jim's part. I use a thumb pick for this one so the bass notes are a little stronger. It's very fun to play and sing.
The studio version starts with the simple acoustic guitars, but with each verse, more instruments like bass and piano are added and help to increase the intensity and meaning of the lyrics.
His name is pronounced Crow-chee. His son AJ is touring singing his father's songs. Aj was a month or two from his 2nd birthday when Jim and Maury guitarist were killed in a plane crash. Jim was 30 years old
Jim Croce (Pronounced: Cro.chee) amazing Song Writer and Singer. Such a story teller. Died way too soon. 51 years ago next month (Sept 23, 1973), plane crash. FYI, the other singers name is: "Maury Muehleisen"
Fingerstyle (classical) Guitar: go learn it... Just have to commit yourself to an hour of practice a day every day for the rest of your life. This is the secret to greatness as a musician!

Time in a Bottle and I Got A Name are his best other songs..
One of the most beautiful songs I've heard is Jim Croce's (pronounced crow-chee) Time in a Bottle which came out around the time he died.
RIP Jim.❤
Jim has a lot of great songs. Amazing artist, and gone way too soon.
Matchbooks and payphones. Different world.
Thaks for covering this
Jim Croce is probably one of the best storytelling song writers ever.
Gone entirely too soon RIP Jim
I've always heard his name pronounced with E on the end.
If I could save
Time In a Bottle
🚜🤠🐂
Tomorrow is gonna be a brighter day
He died 9/20/73, in a Louisiana plane crash. He was doing a tour of colleges.
He was a favorite of us college students all over the country 51 years ago.
Oh wow! So tragic! 😞
I dare you to find a Jim Croce song you don't like, he died way too young R I P Jim .
SO many great song choices in his catalog!! I grew up listening to him from my early teens on. He died far too young. Just imagine all of the beautiful music that died with him. 😥💔
A few favorites that I'd *highly recommend* -
"I've Got a Name"
"Photographs & Memories"
"Time in a Bottle"
"One Less Set of Footsteps"
Hit that button too soon! 😉
Just HAD TO add these!
"Lover's Cross"
"You Don't Mess Around with Jim"
"New York's Not My Home"
"Workin' at the Car Wash Blues"
"Roller Derby Queen"
OK *Any* Croce song is a good pick! LOL
Perfect 🥰 💞
Time in a bottle, Bad bad Leroy Brown are two songs.
He also had a few upbeat hits, One Less Set of Footsteps, Rapid Roy, and Working at the Carwash Blues. I found Lover's Cross particularly relatable. Breaking off a relationship to protect your own self and sense of dignity.
Dreamin Again
Oh man.
I can’t even .
This man was so good.
his playing is mesmerizing.
Absolutely!! This was UNREAL! 🔥
Give a listen to, Time in a Bottle, I got a Name and Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. I think you'll like them.
pronounced crow-chee. please please do a deep dive into this amazing and gone-too-soon artist
Give your ears a treat! Thursday, by the late great Jim C
Thanks for hanging out and glad you enjoyed it! Such a great tune indeed! 😃
You should dive down this rabbit hole.
Big hits, fun ballods --- Bad Bad LeRoy Brown, Don't mess around with Jim
Cry jerker --- Time in a bottle
Quirky fun Roller Derby Queen . . . and so much more
I've also never heard this song before, but I love it!
His son is a pretty good musician
I grew up listening to him. I love his music.
Another song with a similar set up is Summertime with Billy Strings and Marcus King. Two young phenoms playing real reserved.
One of the great disappoints of my life was not seeing him live. Taken way too soon
We were thinking about seeing Gordon Lightfoot (you’d like that, too) but he died a year or two ago while on tour.
The great rock stars are leaving.
I had never heard of him or this song. That is the greatest thing about reaction videos-being introduced to new music!
I always get really excited when I hear songs and artists I’ve never even heard of. This song was beautiful
Exactly! You and me both! Such a great tune!
Time In A Bottle is one of my favorites.
I have a Gretsch DoBro. Just learning but played acoustic years ago. The Gretsch as a beautiful sound. Cara
Oh super cool! Such a cool instrument! I’d love to pick it up one day!
JIm Crow-she
Jim Crow-chee. Great song and he had several really good ones.
One of my favorite Jim Croce ( pronounced crow-chee) songs is I got a Name. Sadly, he left us way too early. Thanks for reviewing him.
Jim Croce (Crow-she)
Jim is one of the best songwriter singers of the 70s. Another great story songwriter is Harry Chopin. You would love his song “Taxi”
The studio version starts with the simple acoustic guitars, but with each verse, more instruments like bass and piano are added and help to increase the intensity and meaning of the lyrics.
all the other recommendations are great but another one is Which way are you going. Beautiful lyrics that are still relevant today.
Appreciate it! Can’t wait to hear more from him! 🔥
What 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 and 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 observations about this song and artist. Thank you SO much for sharing! 💚
Cro-Chee is the pronunciation of his name.
His name is pronounced Crow-chee. His son AJ is touring singing his father's songs. Aj was a month or two from his 2nd birthday when Jim and Maury guitarist were killed in a plane crash. Jim was 30 years old
I didn't know that about AJ! That's wonderful!
‘I Got a Name’ up next, bro! Dig the meanings. I’d love to hear you say something about the tune : )
