It's the most anticlimactic, just another day at the office, every man, ordinary recording of a dude that just got finished eating a Hot Pocket lay down some bass tracks, in a manner so opposite to Meshuggah's stage presence that I almost thought it was a parody. I feel like he’s doing what he’s doing while playing because the poor guy was incapable of headbanging or even moving his head like right and left too quickly because he suffered from severe vertigo. In fact, it got so bad, he had to quit mid-tour following this album’s release and this album was the last one he played on.
HOWEVER, it is, in my opinion, the final album that I would consider…instrumentally rounded out, with the guitars, distorted and clean (the clean riff in the bridge of Future Breed Machine is one of the best things ever…), and the drum work being a mix of the older jazzy style and the newer rhythmically syncopated work, even with the vocals…it’s probably the last time we hear Jens do something other than ONLY focal fry screams…which of course I don’t have a problem with…but he demonstrates beyond that ability on this album, with his false cord screams…where he’s actually adding notes behind it (I always think of “Beneath” and the refrain back to the opening distorted riff “that fills me from inSIIIIIIIIDE”. Clearly hitting actually notes during that). Later that fades, which again is fine because it’s what the style of music called for. Then…there’s the BASS. On this album it’s audible with good levels…and really the last time I remember that happening in one of their like entire albums. I know, eventually the move to the 8 Strings can essentially negate the need for a bass all together, but I guess I’m saying I’m glad this guy was able to play a part in this, because what he did was great, and I really love the bass sound on this album.
I just wrote too much. If I get carpal tunnel I’m putting my hand in a blender. Cuz I think that would be super cool to watch.
@Erik Burgerhagen I write a 300+ word comment with significantly better than average grammar and perfect spelling (except for one word), not to mention the content of my comment and how it pertains to the video and Meshuggah as a whole…and you focus on the one spelling error I make? Even if you’re joking, I’m still irritated cuz of the effort I put into what I wrote and shit like that undermines it. I’m a musician not a fucking doctor or physical therapist or some shit. And if it wasn’t a joke, people who insist on being “spelling police” SHOULD just be back in grade school, the only place where people are supposed to care about stupid shit like that. NO ONE likes a know-it-all. And even if writing out that whole response gives me CARPAL TUNNEL, it was worth it. Blow me.

Still their best album to me by a mile. They've done good shit since, but this just has so many great songs. It's dynamic which makes the heavy parts heavier, it's organic and the sound is dirty and raw as fucking hell.

In 1995 is when I became a Meshugganer. All it took was 2 minutes of the opener and I was done. Fredrik's "Alan Holdsworth" solos were sublime. The Chopping Blade Riffs and the Guitar Sirens of Peril!

Duh, there was a metronome, you caneven see it sometimes. It's a special kind of metronome called "Tomas Haake".

It's not that needed when the drums are recorded. Thomas may have used one when he did the drums though, but I could be wrong about that.
