I feel like he’s doing what he’s doing while playing because the poor guy was incapable of headbanging or even moving his head like right and left too quickly because he suffered from severe vertigo. In fact, it got so bad, he had to quit mid-tour following this album’s release and this album was the last one he played on. HOWEVER, it is, in my opinion, the final album that I would consider…instrumentally rounded out, with the guitars, distorted and clean (the clean riff in the bridge of Future Breed Machine is one of the best things ever…), and the drum work being a mix of the older jazzy style and the newer rhythmically syncopated work, even with the vocals…it’s probably the last time we hear Jens do something other than ONLY focal fry screams…which of course I don’t have a problem with…but he demonstrates beyond that ability on this album, with his false cord screams…where he’s actually adding notes behind it (I always think of “Beneath” and the refrain back to the opening distorted riff “that fills me from inSIIIIIIIIDE”. Clearly hitting actually notes during that). Later that fades, which again is fine because it’s what the style of music called for. Then…there’s the BASS. On this album it’s audible with good levels…and really the last time I remember that happening in one of their like entire albums. I know, eventually the move to the 8 Strings can essentially negate the need for a bass all together, but I guess I’m saying I’m glad this guy was able to play a part in this, because what he did was great, and I really love the bass sound on this album. I just wrote too much. If I get carpal tunnel I’m putting my hand in a blender. Cuz I think that would be super cool to watch.
