I really appreciate you doing this review/unboxing/setup because there aren’t really any good videos about this particular saw on TH-cam. This beautiful saw has definitely been on my wish list for quite a while now. It’s going to be my next miter saw! So I think you just sealed my decision. One improvement I wish Makita would make to this saw as well as the 10” version, Is to add an LED light just like the DeWALT dws780 has instead of a laser, that’s far more accurate and precise(especially when working indoors). That’s would be a very nice upgrade to an already great saw. When I buy this saw I’m going to add a 12” diablo 100 tooth blade to get the ultimate cut quality for fine woodworking purposes. Thank you so much for the Kind words.Yes, I also wish it had a light. The laser is handy for quickly placing your work under the path of the blade but I always make my final positioning by eye. Since the video I had a little issue with this thing staying square. It seemed like a some times it was then sometimes it wasn't. After spending a lot of time trying to correct it. I determined it to be blade deflection. So your choice of an upgraded blade is wise. I would recommend a heavier blade. Let me know how that Diablo works out for you. Thanks again!
John Kidd that makes sense, it most likely is blade deflection like you said. A good quality 1/8” blade would most likely correct the blade deflection. I’ll definitely let you know how the diablo works out, it should be a huge difference compared to the stock Makita blade. I also only buy Makita and DeWALT tools lol
I got the 10 inch version but the plastic square was broken in three places so waiting for Makita to send me a replacement. Set it up just how it should be but blade is yet to be fitted but as soon as the square arrives it will be. Need to mitre kitchen wall cupboard pelmet pieces and get electrician to put light underneath. Job done. Good video clip as it is nice and slow to understand.

Hi John, I wish they had this model on display at Home Depot but it wasn’t there. Was up in the air between the 10” vs the 12”, I ended up ordering the 12” inch today from homedepot and it will be shipped to my home from them, it was just over $800 out the door. My main reason for getting this saw is because of the rails and it can be put against the wall 2where the dewalt dw780 I had could not be. If it doesn’t work out it’s going back.
Hi, i just bouger the same yesterday, i got it to replace the pli one just like you, because i broke it just like you with the same Wood !!!! Think i’ll but online the places to fix it and keep it for rough job outsider, i also bouger it online, m’y first move is always to go in store, either they sold the last one or its place very high and you’re there forever, with you the best with it, see you around, thanks
Just bought this and its missing the "grip" knob for the "turn base". It's part 21 in the manual. Can anyone send me dimensions of what it is so I can machine one, or tell me where to get a replacement in Canada? Thanks.
Doing my research, I recently purchased the DeWalt 779. So far it is a great saw but like you said, it takes a lot of room. It will stay in my shop and never on a site. But I am going to have to design my table to house the saw. I too am a Makita person but I got the DeWalt at a $200 off sale so I make the purchase from Home Depot. I came to my house with the box beat all the hell. Kinda pissed me off that the carriers don't give a damn about you equipment. Luckly, the saw was set up at the factory perfect and no issues being damaged other than the box. Now I wish I had checked out the Makita closer. I might have purchased it instead of the DeWalt. I have a couple of Makita tool, circular saw and jig saw that are near 30 years old and still kicking ass. Jerry South Carolina.
John Kidd came dead on right out of the box... isn’t the dewalt it replaces, it’s better. Will take a while to figure everything out and make it an extension of me like the last one... but I’m pretty impressed. Thanks again for the great tutorial.

Shes holding up just fine. I left it out in a 3 sided barn for a month or 3 while was redoing my kitchen. It was super damp out there and I got surface rust on the slide rails. Pissed about that but my own damn fault. Steel rusts. So keep them rails well oiled. Good saw. Heavy as a tank. Specially if you mount on a mobile base. The whole package will give ya a hernia to lift. To bad they didn't put a light on it.

Yep. A lot of crap stuff comes out of China but turns out that Covid was pretty efficient and well-conceived. Nice saw, bought mine a couple of years ago and never regretted it.
I have watched several videos looks like laser is always to the left, i think it was meant to show the part that would be left, how has the saw been holding up?
Its holding up well. But glad I have a 10' for portable work. And yes the Laser marks the side3 of the blade which it should. Middle of the blade wouldn't Accurate.
Hello, i bought the saw yesterday, there is one issue though, the Guard Plate "part number 347308-4" is moving left to right and vice versa when pushed by hand, even if i push it from left to right it touches the blade below the teeth line, is that normal?

Thanks for detailed review. I am considering this model for my jobsite finish carpentry work. I make storage/transport cases for my miter saws. Could you please add to the thorough set of measurements you provided: the minimum inside dimensions (LxWxH) that a case would need in order to fit the saw with head locked in the down position and miter angle set to whatever angle makes the overall footprint the smallest? (I currently run Dewalt DW706 non-slider, and its optimum transport miter angle is its max., 50 deg. But with this slider and its exceptionally wide miter angle capacity, I suspect that the optimum angle to minimize transport footprint might be less than the max. available.) Thanks.
I just watched a video about how the detent plate is made of soft aluminum and wears out very quickly. This man, along with other people hew knows found a company that can make them in stainless steel. He has them for sale on his website for $110.00 Canadian. He showed how the sides of the detents wear from the locking pin. According to him, Makita has no plans on fixing the problem, but this was a year old video and so far I can't find an update if they changed their mind. If you key in Makita Miter Saw in the TH-cam search area you'll quickly find the video titled number one problem. I was seriously thinking of buying this saw, but now, probably not.
How do you cut crown molding if the fence risers need to be removed for beveled cuts? Also what kind of work do you use it for, deck building or finish carpentry?
You would move the side thats in the way. I do all kinds of work with this saw. Just finished some crown on top of my new wall cabinets. Worked wonderfully for that. But it mostly lives in a permanent location in my wood shop as a all around chop box. I even cut rough cut slabs with it. Thanks

Hi John. Enjoyed your video as I'm thinking about this saw to replace my existing (same as the one you replaced). I can't find the overall length of the say front-to-back when set at the extreme miter setting. I have a really tight space and am curious how narrow I can collapse it down to when not is use and can't find that info anywhere. Is that something you'd be willing to measure?
Can you tell me your dust collection pieces. Looks like rock let’s blue end but it also looks like you have another adapter put into the stock hose first. I can’t get an adapter to work with mine
If the saw is mounted as close to the rear wall as possible, can you provide the dimension from the wall to the front face of the fence? In other words, how close can you get the fence to the rear wall? I can't seem to find this dimension anywhere online.
@@johnkidd2067 No need. I just bought the saw. It's 15 1/4 inches. By the way, in trying to square up the saw for miter, I'm finding if I square the fence to the blade while retracted, it isn't square to how the saw tracks when sliding. That means that the saw blade is not calibrated to be straight with the rails. I found a blog post where the guy claims that this is because the rail assembly becomes twisted during shipping. The fix is to loosen the two set screws near the front of the rails and re-align. Nothing in the manual about that.

Man! I was so hoping you would measure the height of the base from the bench top. Any chance you could measure? I called makita and they didn’t even know. just bought a new makita compound miter saw LS1219L. I can only lock the bevel at 0 degrees with the nob and not the latch leaver. That does not seam correct, just want to know if this is correct operation, as my previous saw locked at 0 degrees
Would you agree that the trick to cutting a clean cross cut trench or mortise, with a flat bottom, is to push the saw blade carefully and slowly forward, and to use a super sharp Diablo blade ? Trying to prevent the arm from flexing which would cause the saw to bounce and create an uneven base in the mortise, Obviously, put a sacrificial spacer against the rail so that the lowest part of the blade traverses across the entire width of the mortise. Never done a mortise using this saw. Easy you think ?
I can't decide whether to get the LS1219L or the XSL08PT. I'm working in a shop as well but I like the idea of a brushless motor. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
John - how are you liking this saw almost a year later? Any issues with the rails not being parallel as evidenced by dishing on wide cuts (note: this is supposedly correctable by loosening the two - very tight - allen head bolts on the "block" there at the front of the rails putting a 1X2 between the rails and giving it a twist slightly - and hen doing test cuts until it is accurate)? What about mushrooming of the detents on the miter plate? Any regrets or do you still love it?

William Farkas 60 degrees left and right, which is a great feature and unlike some other saws like the DeWALT dws780 can only go 50 degrees left and 60 degrees right
There's junk from China, USA, UK, and Germany. Also very good stuff from all 4. It depends on specification by the brand and what customers will pay. Makita found non-Japanese simply won't pay for their made in Japan stuff so they only sell that in Japan. Mafell slowly building up a market in USA. About 30 years ago, tradesmen started buying cheap tools they threw away when job done. Developers started building houses at bottom cost and quality level put a lot of skilled guys out of work, replaced with what we, in UK, call cowboy builders. Now, there is demand for quality work that pays tradespeople to invest in tools like in older days. Thanks for confirming my leaning towards Makita for semi retired shop fit out
@@johnkidd2067 that’s concerning. I have a cheap(the cheapest) harbor freight 12” sliding dual bevel sitting in a very humid(water stands on floor with heavy rain) old barn in the upper Midwest and not. Speck of rust on it. Been about 8yrs now
The jumping on startup with the DeWalt is annoying but you kinda put up with it like there is no alternative. Nice to know he Makita has the soft start feature. I want to keep my big DeWalt but keep it for mobility. Put the Makita in the shop integrated into cabinets.
Definitely a good review and a saw worth looking at. I've been debating this saw or even the 10 inch model to replace my old hitachi 12 inch chop saw. I really like makita tools and wish that you could see them more in stores
Nice review video, I am looking to purchase this saw, really confused between Dewalt Dw 780 and Makita 1219, price wise both are same in India. After 11 months of making this video, do you have any experience to share, is there something which is concerning in this saw, how is the accuracy so far, I have a makita table saw and had some issues with it, and spend lot of time fixing it, let me know the feedback. What's your take after having this for the past 9 months? still happy with repeatable accuracy? I have seen some reviews of this saw in the past complaining about a bowed cut and something about rails not being parallel to the blade, have you seen any evidence of this with your saw? thanks so much for your time.
Jeff, All in all i like the saw. But, not a saw you want to carry around much. Very heavy. Also, I have experienced the bowed cut but chalked that up to blade wobble. But not sure because im still running stock blade. Getting this thing dead nuts dialed in is tough. I don't honestly know why. Human nature is now that I've used this for a while id like to set it next to the Bosch and do a comparison. I cut crown moulding for around the tops of my new kitchen wall cabinets and i preformed fantastically. Oddly it doesn't seem as accurate as a straight chop box. Dust collection is pretty damn good. I wish the slide rails where a little more ridgid. Plenty of power. Sorry for the stream of consciousness format. Hope this helps
@@johnkidd2067 Did you see my comment about the issue with the adjustable detent plate, and because of how it's made with soft aluminum it wears out? Have you checked to see if it's worn? Or is it another adjustment issue you're having? I'm trying to find as many reviews as possible to decide if it's worth buying. And I've heard of issues with the Bosh. I guess the arm design can lead to inaccuracies. I'm also waiting for two other testing videos from the Concor Carpenter channel. You should follow them if you don't
Such a beautiful saw, I had one but sadly had to send it back, I did this because I found that when I made a full crosscut there was cupping, not much maybe about one mm but it was noticeable, I believe this is caused by one of the bearing sliding posts being out of alignment, have you noticed this in your saw?
Yes sometimes. Im thinking blade deflection. Very small amount but noticeable on critical cuts. I plan on a blade upgrade then Ill but the results in the comments.

I'd be interested in a follow up like many have said. I was ready to buy the corded version last year but held off because of a flaw another carpenter found. The detent plate in aluminum and us prone to wear at the detents. He had teamed up with someone to make a stainless after market detent plate. I ended up getting a dewalt 779 and added the light kit to make it a 780. The dewalts are used by the vast majority of trim guys for a reason. The work and are accurate. I too was disappointed in the large size since I use it in a shop. Most users are using it outside on a stand so the size isn't an issue. It replaced a Ridgid SCMS that I couldn't get square. I'm still considering the makita because it's slide system seems really well designed and I'd love the space savings
Its got a bit of blade deflection/wobble that makes getting it perfectly square hard. Because when the blade is stopped its square. But when spinning she comes out of true. But only noticeable when doing super precise work. I think a heavier blade would solve the problem. Check yours. square it and make a cut then flip it over and see if it stays true. Id be interested in hearing your findings...
Been looking for some reviews on this saw. Thank you. I am looking to upgrade my 10" Makita (same as your old one). this was very helpful. I did come across another channel that has the new saw style. He changed the angle detent piece to one made of stainless steel. Check out Stene Woodwork, I believe he is selling them. That would be a good replacement to the aluminum detent ring.
Lee Eckl thank you. Ive been pretty happy with it. You many want to upgrade to a heavier blade to cut down on deflection. I’m getting a little. But 12” blades do that sometimes.
Wow you just cant get a good tool ready to go out of the box anymore. I guess the factory workers dont take the time anymore to calibrate probably since they are under the whip to push product out the door faster and faster, so you get to spend special time with your tool before you can use it, then fiddle, adjust, fiddle, adjust. I could see you raised your eyebrow a few times, hopefully you dont regret the purchase. I had the LS1212, now I need a new one since there are too many fails now after 15 years of use.
Like you, I hate to purchase stuff from China but, it is most times Tiawan which don't consider themselves belonging to the mainland China. That might be a plus, I don't know.
I try not to buy much from China, but it's a bloody hard job! Most stuff made there is utter garbage. I suppose with firms like Makita in charge of quality control that should give me a degree of assurance.

I saw that video. My detent plate is fine and is replaceable for 3.99. Im not worried about it. If it wears out I will buy a new one .

You would move the side thats in the way. I do all kinds of work with this saw. Just finished some crown on top of my new wall cabinets. Worked wonderfully for that. But it mostly lives in a permanent location in my wood shop as a all around chop box. I even cut rough cut slabs with it. Thanks

Hi John. Enjoyed your video as I'm thinking about this saw to replace my existing (same as the one you replaced). I can't find the overall length of the say front-to-back when set at the extreme miter setting. I have a really tight space and am curious how narrow I can collapse it down to when not is use and can't find that info anywhere. Is that something you'd be willing to measure?
Can you tell me your dust collection pieces. Looks like rock let’s blue end but it also looks like you have another adapter put into the stock hose first. I can’t get an adapter to work with mine
Just a Rockler hose shoved onto the stock saw outlet.

If the saw is mounted as close to the rear wall as possible, can you provide the dimension from the wall to the front face of the fence? In other words, how close can you get the fence to the rear wall? I can't seem to find this dimension anywhere online.

@@johnkidd2067 No need. I just bought the saw. It's 15 1/4 inches. By the way, in trying to square up the saw for miter, I'm finding if I square the fence to the blade while retracted, it isn't square to how the saw tracks when sliding. That means that the saw blade is not calibrated to be straight with the rails. I found a blog post where the guy claims that this is because the rail assembly becomes twisted during shipping. The fix is to loosen the two set screws near the front of the rails and re-align. Nothing in the manual about that.

Man! I was so hoping you would measure the height of the base from the bench top. Any chance you could measure? I called makita and they didn’t even know. just bought a new makita compound miter saw LS1219L. I can only lock the bevel at 0 degrees with the nob and not the latch leaver. That does not seam correct, just want to know if this is correct operation, as my previous saw locked at 0 degrees

Would you agree that the trick to cutting a clean cross cut trench or mortise, with a flat bottom, is to push the saw blade carefully and slowly forward, and to use a super sharp Diablo blade ? Trying to prevent the arm from flexing which would cause the saw to bounce and create an uneven base in the mortise, Obviously, put a sacrificial spacer against the rail so that the lowest part of the blade traverses across the entire width of the mortise. Never done a mortise using this saw. Easy you think ?

John - how are you liking this saw almost a year later? Any issues with the rails not being parallel as evidenced by dishing on wide cuts (note: this is supposedly correctable by loosening the two - very tight - allen head bolts on the "block" there at the front of the rails putting a 1X2 between the rails and giving it a twist slightly - and hen doing test cuts until it is accurate)? What about mushrooming of the detents on the miter plate? Any regrets or do you still love it?

The notch mechanism on the Bosch is plastic, with a plastic detent tooth...it had slop before any wear, one of the major reasons I passed on it.
Dust Collection how do you rate it?
I think its the best one going for a slide saw. Its what made me pick this one over the Bosch.

William Farkas 60 degrees left and right, which is a great feature and unlike some other saws like the DeWALT dws780 can only go 50 degrees left and 60 degrees right
There's junk from China, USA, UK, and Germany. Also very good stuff from all 4. It depends on specification by the brand and what customers will pay. Makita found non-Japanese simply won't pay for their made in Japan stuff so they only sell that in Japan. Mafell slowly building up a market in USA. About 30 years ago, tradesmen started buying cheap tools they threw away when job done. Developers started building houses at bottom cost and quality level put a lot of skilled guys out of work, replaced with what we, in UK, call cowboy builders. Now, there is demand for quality work that pays tradespeople to invest in tools like in older days.

The jumping on startup with the DeWalt is annoying but you kinda put up with it like there is no alternative. Nice to know he Makita has the soft start feature. I want to keep my big DeWalt but keep it for mobility. Put the Makita in the shop integrated into cabinets.

What's your take after having this for the past 9 months? still happy with repeatable accuracy? I have seen some reviews of this saw in the past complaining about a bowed cut and something about rails not being parallel to the blade, have you seen any evidence of this with your saw? thanks so much for your time.
Jeff, All in all i like the saw. But, not a saw you want to carry around much. Very heavy. Also, I have experienced the bowed cut but chalked that up to blade wobble. But not sure because im still running stock blade. Getting this thing dead nuts dialed in is tough. I don't honestly know why. Human nature is now that I've used this for a while id like to set it next to the Bosch and do a comparison. I cut crown moulding for around the tops of my new kitchen wall cabinets and i preformed fantastically. Oddly it doesn't seem as accurate as a straight chop box. Dust collection is pretty damn good. I wish the slide rails where a little more ridgid. Plenty of power. Sorry for the stream of consciousness format. Hope this helps
@@johnkidd2067 Did you see my comment about the issue with the adjustable detent plate, and because of how it's made with soft aluminum it wears out? Have you checked to see if it's worn? Or is it another adjustment issue you're having? I'm trying to find as many reviews as possible to decide if it's worth buying. And I've heard of issues with the Bosh. I guess the arm design can lead to inaccuracies. I'm also waiting for two other testing videos from the Concor Carpenter channel. You should follow them if you don't

Such a beautiful saw, I had one but sadly had to send it back, I did this because I found that when I made a full crosscut there was cupping, not much maybe about one mm but it was noticeable, I believe this is caused by one of the bearing sliding posts being out of alignment, have you noticed this in your saw?
Yes sometimes. Im thinking blade deflection. Very small amount but noticeable on critical cuts. I plan on a blade upgrade then Ill but the results in the comments.

The saw is still going strong. This one or the Bosch are solid choices.
I'd be interested in a follow up like many have said. I was ready to buy the corded version last year but held off because of a flaw another carpenter found. The detent plate in aluminum and us prone to wear at the detents. He had teamed up with someone to make a stainless after market detent plate. I ended up getting a dewalt 779 and added the light kit to make it a 780. The dewalts are used by the vast majority of trim guys for a reason. The work and are accurate. I too was disappointed in the large size since I use it in a shop. Most users are using it outside on a stand so the size isn't an issue. It replaced a Ridgid SCMS that I couldn't get square. I'm still considering the makita because it's slide system seems really well designed and I'd love the space savings
That detent plate is a 10$ replacement part. I wouldn't let it hold u back.

Its got a bit of blade deflection/wobble that makes getting it perfectly square hard. Because when the blade is stopped its square. But when spinning she comes out of true. But only noticeable when doing super precise work. I think a heavier blade would solve the problem. Check yours. square it and make a cut then flip it over and see if it stays true. Id be interested in hearing your findings...

Been looking for some reviews on this saw. Thank you. I am looking to upgrade my 10" Makita (same as your old one). this was very helpful. I did come across another channel that has the new saw style. He changed the angle detent piece to one made of stainless steel. Check out Stene Woodwork, I believe he is selling them. That would be a good replacement to the aluminum detent ring.

Wow you just cant get a good tool ready to go out of the box anymore. I guess the factory workers dont take the time anymore to calibrate probably since they are under the whip to push product out the door faster and faster, so you get to spend special time with your tool before you can use it, then fiddle, adjust, fiddle, adjust. I could see you raised your eyebrow a few times, hopefully you dont regret the purchase. I had the LS1212, now I need a new one since there are too many fails now after 15 years of use.

Like you, I hate to purchase stuff from China but, it is most times Tiawan which don't consider themselves belonging to the mainland China. That might be a plus, I don't know.
I try not to buy much from China, but it's a bloody hard job! Most stuff made there is utter garbage. I suppose with firms like Makita in charge of quality control that should give me a degree of assurance.
