Interesting question. I did some research into that. There was a paper raising this issue in 2016 by Scafetta (if I copy the link TH-cam will delete my comment.) But There is also a realclimate article called “paleo climate: the end of the Holocene” which explains how the Holocene temp decrease matches what we would expect from milankovich cycles. However, co2 does increase by about 20 ppm over this 11,000 year period. I think the answer to your question is because, over such a long timespan, the tilt wobble of the earths axis has a greater and overruling effect than a small change in co2. Co2 has now almost doubled within 70 years, a much faster increase.

Hi there! Thanks for the questions. Katharine Hayhoe will be taking questions live on Facebook this Wednesday (Feb. 6) at 8p.m. (CDT) on her FB page as well as the Global Weirding page. That would be an excellent time to ask this question.
Reversing an ice age is great. What's not so great is causing lakes to form 11,000 feet up in the alps, huge (biggest ever) wildfires in the arctic, sea levels etc etc...
The good news about global warming is that it’s not being caused by increasing solar output or any other natural cause, and also that mankind generally understands that it’s the ‘amplified greenhouse effect’ which is the source of increasing temperatures. With this in mind, it behooves us to rapidly advance and apply our scientific knowledge to the point that burning fossil fuels to produce electricity will become as antiquated as burning whale oil for light. Quote: “Anxiety must go. It must be replaced by faith and solemn confidence in the outworking of the divine plan.” Note: As sunlight (photons) is warming the surface of the Earth, this surface heat energy is also radiating away from our planet as ‘infrared radiation’ which passes freely thru the atmospheric gases of nitrogen and oxygen. Indeed, if it weren’t for greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that ‘do interact’ strongly with infrared energy and ‘impede the escape’ of Earth’s radiant heat, then the planet would be perpetually frozen solid. Thankfully, even though greenhouse gases comprise only 4/10ths of one percent of the atmosphere, they are so powerful that they maintain a ‘blanketing effect’ by constantly absorbing and releasing the infrared energy over and over, again and again. In doing so, they gyrate wildly, thus causing them to vigorously collide with other atmospheric molecules which, in turn, collide with other air molecules, imparting the kinetic energy of motion throughout the atmosphere - and this vibratory state registers as temperature. Not a bad idea, but if we seriously wanted to use fossil fuels to geo-engineer ourselves out of the next ice age, the best course of action for that would be to cease all oil, coal, and gas extraction immediately to ensure that our descendants several thousand years from now still have easily accessible fuel to burn to stave off an ice age.
Allow me to mention some nitpicks about this video. In showing the Earth's orbit as elliptical, the Sun is put in the center of the ellipse. This is wrong. The Sun should be at one of the foci. Volcanoes can indeed warm the Earth in the short term. If there is a steady stream of volcanoes erupting then the Earth will be kept at a cool temperature. If there is a lull in the eruptions then the Earth will warm. Not that this is happening, but just ignoring the possibility doesn't make it go away.
The sun is at one of the foci. You’re mistaking the two orbital paths they drew as being one big ellipse with a circle in the center (with the sun at the center of the ellipse and circle). Watch the animation again and you’ll see what I mean.
Geoscientist deny ancient books as the Mahabharata from India and the Popol Vuh from the Maya and others that tell us that the earth is suffering from a cycle of natural disasters. These disasters are causing a huge tidal wave, floods, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and a bombardment of fiery meteors. At the end a large part of the earth is covered with a thick layer of mud. In that layer we find the remains of land and sea creatures. Many animals become extinct, mankind hardly survives. At the end of the disasters, blocks of ice, as great as mountains, fall back on the earth. As a result, the earth is cooling rapidly and the sea level is dropping.. There have been hundreds of floods, similar to Noah's Flood and worse. Every layer of the earth stands for one disaster. These disasters create a cycle of civilizations. One of these civilizations is, near the end of their existence, higher developed than our civilization today. They vanished 20,000 years ago because of the next recurring, thus predictable, disaster. The only possible cause of such a cycle can be the ninth planet of our solar system that approaches the sun and its planets every few thousand years because of its excentric orbit. To learn much more about recurring floods, the cycle of civilizations and its timeline and ancient high tech, read the e-book:"Planet 9 = Nibiru" You can read it nicely on any computer, tablet or smartphone. Just search for: invisible nibiru 9
Sample size is too small over the life of the earth to determine what the primary cause is... everything is just speculation. Granted, human made gas prob isn't helping. wha wha.
Sure let's say you are correct man caused all of the warm we see today. Well how much has the temperature increase since the 1970s? From what I could find online the answer is about .2 degrees, which really isn't much. The second question would be is increasing temperature really a bad thing? Historically the climate has been much warmer and was associated with a more productive planet.
1. The planet has warmed about 1 degrees Celsius over the past 150 years. 2. This is not a small amount as you suggest. The energy required to raise the earth's temperature by the much is enormous. 3. Higher co2 levels may have harbored life in the past because the changes in co2 were much slower allowing life to adapt. Life is not so lucky in this situation
@@reubenwills9757 Actually the recent CO2 increase has led to now greening of the edges of the deserts, & more trees than anytime w/in the last century \ ( Plz help supply the %'s here, and some data-sources, ASAP ; thanks \\ )
It's more than .2* Celsius. But even if that was it, that's a huge amount planetwide. Yes it's bad, if you care about humans and the current biosphere. It is probably good for the planet as a whole, but will lead to billions of human deaths, and the mass extinction of current plants and animals.
And it isn't humans. Carbon dioxide comprises less than 1 percent of the atmosphere. Any increase in less than 1 percent if insignificant. We are in as normal long climate cycle.
S. Pak The Ozone Layer hole is not like a hole in a box of milk that leaks out the fluid. The ozone later is like an invisible sunscreen applied to your skin that blocks out some negative health effects of solar radiation. The part where you forgot to apply sunscreen is the hole. Sunlight will still reach you but where you forgot to put sunscreen is the part most likely to suffer. So, no, gravity will always keep the atmosphere bound to earth with minimal air leaks and not due to holes in the ozone layer. The ozone layer captures a lot of harmful radiation from space that it has allowed life to thrive in our biosphere for ages. At the moment, the ozone layer is enjoying an age of recovery because governments have banned practices that emit offending chemicals (CFC’s!).
You do not need an other factor, the earth's climate is inherently unstable, warming produces more warming, and cooling produce more cooling. Once you kick it off in one direction is self perpetuating, there is a lot of historical evidence for this, ie a pattern of ice ages and then brief warmer periods. Indeed the most ironic thing about all of this is that the most stable climatic period in the last 500,000 years has been when man has been on the planet, ie the last 17,000 years. Indeed we should be in an ice age going by historic trends, something has prevented that and it may well be CO2.
@@sanfiora6537 What abnormalities? Do you mean the climate improvements which have greened the planet, increased the population, increase food per capita, increase biofuel availability, increase health, prosperity and life expectancy? are those the abnormalities you are talking about or it something else? She make a colossal error in that she ignore the earths albedo ie the light reflected from the earth. As the earth warms less light is reflected and more heat is absorbed, ie you have positive feedback cycle.

Interesting question. I did some research into that.
There was a paper raising this issue in 2016 by Scafetta (if I copy the link TH-cam will delete my comment.)
But There is also a realclimate article called “paleo climate: the end of the Holocene” which explains how the Holocene temp decrease matches what we would expect from milankovich cycles.

Eye role time
The sun is at one of the foci. You’re mistaking the two orbital paths they drew as being one big ellipse with a circle in the center (with the sun at the center of the ellipse and circle). Watch the animation again and you’ll see what I mean.
Oh geez I just realized your comment is 6 years old…
Geoscientist deny ancient books as the Mahabharata from India and the Popol Vuh from the Maya and others that tell us that the earth is suffering from a cycle of natural disasters.
Granted, human made gas prob isn't helping. wha wha.
Hello
@@reubenwills9757 Actually the recent CO2 increase has led to now greening of the edges of the deserts, & more trees than anytime w/in the last century \
( Plz help supply the %'s here, and some data-sources, ASAP ; thanks \\ )
It's more than .2* Celsius. But even if that was it, that's a huge amount planetwide.
Yes it's bad, if you care about humans and the current biosphere. It is probably good for the planet as a whole, but will lead to billions of human deaths, and the mass extinction of current plants and animals.
And it isn't humans. Carbon dioxide comprises less than 1 percent of the atmosphere. Any increase in less than 1 percent if insignificant. We are in as normal long climate cycle.

Arent we part of nature also?
That's why there's a hole in the ozone to let all that trapped hot air out?
What would you say of the climate changes that are happening in our century?is it due to more CO2 produced by factories/industries?
@@sanfiora6537 What abnormalities? Do you mean the climate improvements which have greened the planet, increased the population, increase food per capita, increase biofuel availability, increase health, prosperity and life expectancy?
are those the abnormalities you are talking about or it something else? Those colosallal improvements are due to more CO2 not less. CO2 warms and provides energy to the planet that is why is has brought so much life to the planet.
Do you like life on the planet increasing, or do you want to stop it by reducing CO2 and if so why? Do you simply hate life or are you are deluded brainwashed fool?
@@ufewl can i rephrase the question (I don't hate life wtf)
@@sanfiora6537 You seem to think that CO2 and warmth are bad for the planet, that is the complete opposite of the truth, you are brainwashed into believing "climate change" is bad, when all the evidence, the most prosperous period in man's history every proves beyond any doubt it is good.
Whilst you say you do not hate life your believes will reduce life on the planet. That is the problem.CO2 has greened the planet and if you had your way that greening, that extra abundance of life would not have happened because you
bizarrely believe co2 and warmth are bad.
You are brainwashed.
@@ufewl i never said that though!ik its necessary,ik climate change is a natural phenomenon but partially humans are the cause of it,i believe a small percentage which I can't give the number. And you may be right i was at one point brainwashed listening to all the hypnotizing propaganda that they fed us about how its man-made but i knew I couldn't believe mainstream channels so i stumbled upon Dave Bellamy and what he said makes sense.
She make a colossal error in that she ignore the earths albedo ie the light reflected from the earth. As the earth warms less light is reflected and more heat is absorbed, ie you have positive feedback cycle.
Scientists get stuff wrong...a LOT!! You cannot use "Scientists" as an argument. You must use data. What is your data that connects CO2 and temperature?
They have data but what's more important than data is the physics. The physics has been understood for decades.
NERDDDDDDD :D
hello student
@@potatoxl5519 hi lol
U thought u were honest nope a liar
Had to watch this for an assignment, and I must say, perfect video. I feel much more informed on these arguments and am ready to demolish all of the climate change denying dipshits i see online.
This is called strawmanning arguments
I disliked this video, you just kept telling me what's not cooling and heating the Earth and it was very frustrating. Don't say something cools and heats the Earth and then punk me and take it back. Okay Katharine ?
Knowing all of the earths warming/cooling is something for a God. If you know it, explain why the climate models run hot.

Models can be made to reproduce anything in the past. Show me something where the model predicted the future.
So, er, you want proof that the models can accurately predict something that hasn't happened yet?
Kevin; Climate models were published 20+yrs ago and now we have 20+yrs of temp records, a simple comparison will give/take as to their future confidence.
Let's start with James Hansen's simple models published in 1988 shall we? The chart I'm linking to has a number of temperature sets that can be compared to Hansen's projections, obviously the GISS sets are the most appropriate given what he was doing at the time. moyhu.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/update-check-on-hansens-1988-projections.html
