Anything highly oil coated and cast i like to blast , then heat it with a map gas torch to bring all the oil in the casting to the surface and then blast it again. I've never powdercoated though only 2k poly-u industrial paint.
Not really flash rusting, the different shades of grey are from media I used. The coal slag turned spots darker than others. Also just distance the nozzle is to the part

I wouldve used a phosphate wash to help prevent the pumpkin from flashing real bad. Some care, some dont.
