  • You just don't know what is tucked away behind closed doors.
    We couldn't pass up an opportunity to see if we could get this old girl running again.
    What do you think? Is this old girl worth restoring? Leave a comment and let us know!

    I would call that successful attempt to first understand the status of the engine and other diagnostic features to keep the engine running and see what is needed to bring it back to optimal condition as a realabl machine ...job well done and good luck.

    Well done lads. I have had a lot of 3 cylinder Asian engines in different farm machinery. What I found with them is they won't start without the Glow plugs being used always. I had a digger with similar problems to that one. I found to get her going I'd use a hot air gun into the air intake and leave it running till she started. That way she's getting constant hot air while I'd be turning her over. Worked every time.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks glad you enjoyed it, the hot air gun is a good idea I’ve even pre heated diesel to try to aid the process

    • @stevehill4615
      @stevehill4615 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was thinking exactly the same thing using the hot air gun, and yeah all the asian engines always seem to need a lot of pre-heat to get them going.

    Did you adjust the valve lash ?
    2000 hours engine shouldn't be worn out,so i suspect valves not sealing properly and difficult to start in cold weather until you build up enough heat to expand valves so they seal properly.
    compression testing a diesel is only good for testing cylinders relative to each others,the compression glowplug bore adapter do not have the same volume as the glowplug itself,so the compression will be low for sure.
    Nice work.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  หลายเดือนก่อน

      We checked it, but only as a means of a more accurate check to see if the valves were seated. The exhaust valves were slightly over spec of 0.010" but nothing that would stop it running. No adjustment was made at risk of the clearences becoming too tight if the valves were infact not seated.

    A wise Man once said Japanese kit was built to perform, not built to last. Buy new, get 4-5 good years out of it and get rid pronto.
    My old Gaffer back in the early 90's bought an old Hitachi UH07 to move scrap cars and load waste. It had a Hino engine, and was worn to buggery when he bought it, needless to say it wasn't long before it started playing up. Putting water in the oil and overheating, we thought it had blown the head gasket, and when the Engineer took the head(s) off, the bores were so worn, you could see the rings poking out the sides of the pistons.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RustNRestoration as I recall, we had a length of wire with a crocodile clip either end, to use from battery to glow plugs first thing to get her started. She also had the Engine stop on a decompression lever in the cab, so you'd operate that to give the engine an extra burst of speed when cranking.
      Operating, you had to be gentle or she'd stall on you! Also had a dead Track Motor, so would just about track in a straight line, but turning, you had to operate the tracks in opposite directions!
      When she finally gave up, I tracked her into a corner of the yard, and parked her up, she was still there when I left 3 years later.
      Gaffer needed a replacement, we had a nice Cat 21 on hire which he could have bought for £10K, but being the tightwad he was, he opted for a MF 450D for £2K. He got robbed at that, it had been on demolition, and was wrecked.....

    On Lifting its bonnet and seeing No Air Filter Would be a warning sign, This Motor has seen excess Starter Fluid and the Bores are Glassed To the Point of Not start able! But that's just My Opinion, Had a Brother that That Used Starter Fuild on a Tractor to this Point rather than fixing the Glow Plugs set-up, being a cheap skat ended up expensive!

    I heard the other cylinder come on line finally. She did miss on two cylinders at first gradually getting the valve seats to seal. The small amount she came up with oil to the rings meant the valves at first did not seal. When the video break came and she came back all 4 cylinders were firing.

    Good job guys getting the mitzy going really had me on the edge of my seat willing it to go when you were on the starting stage, do you think a damn good servicing with fresh oil etc will make her usable again or is it going to require more? ps ether starting systems were/are quite common --- plenty of John Deere combines i've seen have ether systems for cold starting out in the mid west.
