I was born in Ecuador, but my parents are Chinese, so they decided to send me back to China when i was 3. however, they had to keep their business in Ecuador running, so they stayed in Ecuador meanwhile I was in China. when i was in China, a lot of people came help to take care of me for my parents, even the teachers in the school were giving me the attention that i needed. I am truly thankful that i grew up in China. the good people there taught me how to be a good perso. I was 3 and i barely knew how to speak any Chinese, but my neighbors and my family in China really liked me. I was really shy because my parents were not with me, but the people are always friendly and helpful
I really like this video and probably could’ve used it a year ago, so it’s fun to see how other people felt especially since I was pretty isolated from English speakers. It would be really interesting if you did this with people of different races since they would experience different things
My first impression was how clean it is. You rarely see discarded plastic bottles etc. Also how well maintained the bushes and trees along the roads are . The Willow trees along the roads in Beijing look amazing. Also how huge Beijing airport was.
How friendly and welcoming everyone is towards foreigners, how amazing and affordable the food is, and how HUGE the cities are in comparison to other countries. Also, I love how affordable and comfortable it is to travel by bullet train, and I love how affordable fresh produce is here. Buying my veggies at a market from a specific vendor that I can get to know instead of a big store is different for me and really nice. Also, this is a little random, but there are so many types of mushrooms here!! I was NOT a mushroom fan in America, but I love them here!
i feel like the diff in China and US is that, China is very willing to do better to improve the life of their citizens, where in the States, they feel like they are already good enough.... or the "Best"..... and this is speaking as a Canadian who's lived in both country for a substantial amount of time...

In 2010 when I arrived in Chongqing, the college car which supposed to pickup me up was late (later I found out it was in accident), 'so late' that I was waiting at the same location for over 6 hours! There was this "guy" already noticed that I was in trouble and day light was leaving me alone there! I was terrified, but after long 'stood up' I tried my 'chinglish' and took help from that guy! He already asked me 10times if he can help me! But you know new country new people! Anyway till date whenever I leave Chongqing or visit again I call him to pickup me up! Thanks Amy for reminding me of that memories!

Might be just me coming from a country where there are different people who speak with different accents, but it was quite understandable to me. Personally I find the Glasgow accent sounds cool.

Shenzhen was beautiful until the streets are opened for so many constructions in different pines. It may not a good time to visit. Sorry to say. There are too many constructions and traffic is super heavy so you may need metros

I happen to watch this video today which is the 40th anniversary of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. We may never imagine that a small fishing village can grow to such a prosperous metropolitan area and one of the biggest scientific hubs in the world in just 40 years. That is the power of openness and diversity.
It is definitely interesting to hear Elle's perspective of China not being dirty or overcrowded like western media portrays. I think Shenzhen might be its own little spot of newness! So much of China, from my experiences living in Hangzhou and traveling around in the north has been extremely crowded, dirty - people spitting and even kids pooping on the streets, no personal space, people shoving my 4 year old daughter out of the way and no regards or respect if she fell over - they would just step over her. Parents and grandparents openly spanking their children or hitting them on the head if they misbehaved. Taking buses and trains transport, people all had their phones on full volume, no earphones, very noisy. Unfortunately people were openly racist - signs on English schools read "White Teachers Only". And taking my daughter (mixed race) out in public - hearing many comments along the lines of "She's so pretty, its too bad her father is black". Being hospitalised with a stomach parasite, the overcrowded Emergency room had one toilet only, with no soap or toilet paper - and that was in hospital. IV was administered whilst I was sitting in a queue of people, and nurses didn't clean the area on my hand before sticking the needle in. We were lined up like cattle, sitting in rows with our IV drips in waiting to get a bed. it was filthy and the doctors and nurses went from one patient to another without washing their hands. My experience in China was quite a culture shock, and I had been living and working in Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan) for many years previous. Even with all the extremely challenging circumstances, we enjoyed most of our time in China. But our experience was polar opposite from those living in Shenzhen. It looks like Shenzhen is the place to be for a more western, clean and respectful experience! So from all my experiences - the western media was extremely accurate, if not showing a lot nicer China, than where we traveled and lived. I need to check it out Shenzhen now!

Pro tip: make sure that your bank won't charge you a lot for withdrawing money from ATMs and then you don't have to carry so much cash (bigger cities have ATMs that accept foreign cards in bigger metro stations). Also, download a bunch of free VPNs and see which one is working when you get to China. Great video! Can't wait to see more of these :D

My first impression of China was in a toilet in Beijing Airport and it wasnt 100% pleasant so I wont go into that. But once leaving the airport I was stunned by the friendliness of the people and the cleanliness of the streets. One thing I would note that could be daunting for folk is that Chinese people (particularly older generations) love to have their photos taken with anybody with blonde or red hair. So if you have either of those be prepared mentally for that. There is absolutely nothing malicious in it but they are just fascinated but coming from a Western country where you would never take pictures of strangers in this way it is something to be aware of.
This is my first month in China, Wuhan. And omg i totally agree with the Scottish girl about the bankcard. I Just got my permit residence 1 week ago and went directly to the bankoffice so for now on i can pay with Wechat and Alipay now. And i can say it’s so convenient and satisfied to pay electronic. It makes your life a lot easier. I think to have a bankcard is one of the most important things while you’re in china for longer than 1 month. During the first weeks i also had to pay cash everytime. Some shops even don’t want to have cash anymore and some can’t change because they haven’t enough spare change.
400 RMB is around $80 AUD. A one hour massage in AUD cost around $70 AUD, although with private health you might get it discounted to $50-60 AUD. Still a bargain though in China if you paid 400 RMB for a 2 hour massage.

For foreigners who are going to China, China is cracking down on foreign teachers who doesn’t have a working visa( or a degree in teaching), some other foreigners in China mentioned that in their video, and it is a good thing cause back then it’s just filled with random foreigners. And as for vpn on the phone, there’s a lot of free vpn for phones which it is good tool for foreigners when you connect to a WiFi and wanted to browse western social media. That is totally fine. ( if it is a Android phone that you, it work much better, cause iPhone does put in some restrictions on vpn)
Foufou I don’t know where you get the idea of “not legal”, but as there is tons of foreigners living, working as well learning in China, and travelers too. Most of them if not all use vpn. I have free mobile vpn in my phones which I use to browse TH-cam when I was in China. Using vpn isn’t exactly illegal as other said, while some people does claim that local people can’t sell vpn or devices that offer vpn as a business in China ( but that also isn’t exactly being confirmed in any way that I can find ). (Free mobile) VPN simply helps you connect to the western social media when connected to a local WiFi in China, and if you are using your 4G data, you can also browse the internet without any interruption too( even when you are using the Chinese mobile phones tower for its signal). The major mobile carriers in the US have a cooperation with China’s telecom companies to let their customers using their 4G data in China. And not just China, other countries too. As far as I know, traveling in China, Macao and Hong Kong with US sim that have a international’s roaming plan can use 4G in all three places without much problem.

I can use wechat and alipay in china with no problem. I just can't use them outside of china. The same for my chinese bank account, I can only get money out of ATMs within China
Junnan Zhang most western butchers serve boar meat (male) pork which can taste gamey. If you go to an asian butcher or specify female pigs it won’t have the smell

Parents and grandparents openly spanking their children or hitting them on the head if they misbehaved. Taking buses and trains transport, people all had their phones on full volume, no earphones, very noisy. Unfortunately people were openly racist - signs on English schools read "White Teachers Only". And taking my daughter (mixed race) out in public - hearing many comments along the lines of "She's so pretty, its too bad her father is black". Being hospitalised with a stomach parasite, the overcrowded Emergency room had one toilet only, with no soap or toilet paper - and that was in hospital. IV was administered whilst I was sitting in a queue of people, and nurses didn't clean the area on my hand before sticking the needle in. We were lined up like cattle, sitting in rows with our IV drips in waiting to get a bed. it was filthy and the doctors and nurses went from one patient to another without washing their hands. My experience in China was quite a culture shock, and I had been living and working in Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan) for many years previous. Even with all the extremely challenging circumstances, we enjoyed most of our time in China. But our experience was polar opposite from those living in Shenzhen.
It looks like Shenzhen is the place to be for a more western, clean and respectful experience! So from all my experiences - the western media was extremely accurate, if not showing a lot nicer China, than where we traveled and lived. I need to check it out Shenzhen now!

Pro tip: make sure that your bank won't charge you a lot for withdrawing money from ATMs and then you don't have to carry so much cash (bigger cities have ATMs that accept foreign cards in bigger metro stations). Also, download a bunch of free VPNs and see which one is working when you get to China.

My first impression of China was in a toilet in Beijing Airport and it wasnt 100% pleasant so I wont go into that. But once leaving the airport I was stunned by the friendliness of the people and the cleanliness of the streets. One thing I would note that could be daunting for folk is that Chinese people (particularly older generations) love to have their photos taken with anybody with blonde or red hair. So if you have either of those be prepared mentally for that. There is absolutely nothing malicious in it but they are just fascinated but coming from a Western country where you would never take pictures of strangers in this way it is something to be aware of.

Good for great info for first time visitor
This is my first month in China, Wuhan. And omg i totally agree with the Scottish girl about the bankcard. I Just got my permit residence 1 week ago and went directly to the bankoffice so for now on i can pay with Wechat and Alipay now. And i can say it’s so convenient and satisfied to pay electronic. It makes your life a lot easier. I think to have a bankcard is one of the most important things while you’re in china for longer than 1 month. During the first weeks i also had to pay cash everytime. Some shops even don’t want to have cash anymore and some can’t change because they haven’t enough spare change.

400 RMB is around $80 AUD. A one hour massage in AUD cost around $70 AUD, although with private health you might get it discounted to $50-60 AUD. Still a bargain though in China if you paid 400 RMB for a 2 hour massage.

For foreigners who are going to China, China is cracking down on foreign teachers who doesn’t have a working visa( or a degree in teaching), some other foreigners in China mentioned that in their video, and it is a good thing cause back then it’s just filled with random foreigners.
And as for vpn on the phone, there’s a lot of free vpn for phones which it is good tool for foreigners when you connect to a WiFi and wanted to browse western social media. That is totally fine. ( if it is a Android phone that you, it work much better, cause iPhone does put in some restrictions on vpn)

Foufou I don’t know where you get the idea of “not legal”, but as there is tons of foreigners living, working as well learning in China, and travelers too. Most of them if not all use vpn.
I have free mobile vpn in my phones which I use to browse TH-cam when I was in China.
Using vpn isn’t exactly illegal as other said, while some people does claim that local people can’t sell vpn or devices that offer vpn as a business in China ( but that also isn’t exactly being confirmed in any way that I can find ).
(Free mobile) VPN simply helps you connect to the western social media when connected to a local WiFi in China, and if you are using your 4G data, you can also browse the internet without any interruption too( even when you are using the Chinese mobile phones tower for its signal). The major mobile carriers in the US have a cooperation with China’s telecom companies to let their customers using their 4G data in China. And not just China, other countries too.
As far as I know, traveling in China, Macao and Hong Kong with US sim that have a international’s roaming plan can use 4G in all three places without much problem.
The Scots are awesome. And Shenzhen is amazing from a Londoner.

My first time in China was in 2011. One thing that stays in my mind is the smell. It's either very good and delicious or fresh poop.
If you use T-Mobile or Google Fi, you have access to TH-cam and anything else. No sure about other carriers but the above definitely work

It's quite true that foreigners might have a hard time using wechat pay and alipay. I think it deserves more attention from Tencent and Alibaba.
Didn't they premiere the "foreigner services" for wechat and alipay? Only recently tho I think somewhere around end of November - when I just returned from China lololol.
I can use wechat and alipay in china with no problem. I just can't use them outside of china. The same for my chinese bank account, I can only get money out of ATMs within China
Living in Australia, I find it really difficult to find pork that doesn't smell. I usually have to boil the meat for a while before cooking.
Junnan Zhang most western butchers serve boar meat (male) pork which can taste gamey. If you go to an asian butcher or specify female pigs it won’t have the smell
