    I had a 4.6 built for me at a shop recommended by my installer. I was assured it would be a solid build that would last for many years to come. Once I'd driven it home (about 1100 miles and there was an oil change along the way) the engine developed severe lifter noise upon start up (cold only). I reached out to the builder, sent them a video and they are fairly sure it's bad lifters. Like @wjsj69, I am not too confident new ones will fix the problem. The builder sent me new lifters and all the goodies to put it back together. It'll be my first time tearing the engine down that far. Thank you for your videos. Thankfully along with yours and a slew of others, I can confidently take care of the problem. (fingers crossed!!)

      Thanks for your comment. It lovely to hear my videos are helpful. It really keeps me motivated. I hope you get it sorted. That must have been a big dissapointment after all the work was done. Good luck stripping it down. Have fun too, I love engine work :)

    Thanks for this video. I've got a small sound that I believe is a tappet sound. I hope. I'm really hopeful it is not a slipped sleeve. But, the sound is not very loud, simply a tapping sound. I am about to go to the junk yard and rip out a set of heads. It will be good practice, if nothing else. But, I thought I would rebuild the heads completely just to see if maybe I could get into my own engine, replace the tappets completely, just yank them all and put in new, and with the rebuilt heads, I should have a completely rebuilt upper portion of the engine. I need to swap out the timing chain, oil pump, and water pump while I'm in there. So, I am mostly doing all of this on a preemptive move and to get rid of the noise. This video helped me understand what might be wrong. I will try the stethoscope to figure out where the noise is coming from precisely.

      Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. I really hope this is the issue for you. Its not too bad compared to a full engine rebuild.
      Have you seen all of these engine rebuild videos? At tge beginning you'll see that I thought the noise I was dealing with was a tappet noise and it turned out to be the crank. It can be really difficult to pin it down. But, as you've seen in this video the stethoscope (or screwdriver) can really help a lot.
      I wish you all the best with it. Its a great fun engine to work on. I love ours to bits. Should be a sweet Motor after all your suggested work. Will you be pitting anything up on TH-cam?
      Thanks again

    I’d be nervous about changing out new lifters without doing the camshaft too. I’ve got a noisy lifter on an old 3.9 and I’m hoping it clears up. Mines only noisy when cold which is odd

    • @lozl
      @lozl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My camshaft an lifters had only an hour or so use on them they were basically all brand new. Its obviously good practice to change lifter and cam together. But in reality while it's very important to change the lifters if you have to change the cam. It is less important to change the cam if you have to change the lifters and the cam wears convex and lifters wear concave.
      Noisy when cold is probably the more normal issue. This is usually a stuck lifter that frees up with the thinner oil and starts working again. You could probably fix this by cleaning them. It's a lot of work mind getting to them and stripping them

    What a maddening and epidemic problem. Luckily, mine went away on its own but it took a while and all the time I was worried that it was a loose cylinder liner. I'm building an engine now and have zero faith that brand new lifters will all be ok.

    Great video do you have a video of the engine running prior to the repair? I have an 03 with a loud tapping noise. All the videos they say its a slipped liner. Mine is very quite when new oil is put in but after a few hundred miles the tappinf starts. Thanks

      I'm afraid I never took a video of the original noise that made me start the entire engine rebuild. It was a dull knocking that was only present when hot. I do however have a video of the tappet noise that I had problems with after the engine was rebuilt. Noisy tappets here at 9:10

      Do you have a video of your engine noise on the net anywhere?

    Greetings sir. What a fine job you've done! I've got myself a 2000 D2V8 and I believe it makes the sound yours had, but now you've fixed it! Well done! I have a couple of questions. 1. How harmful is it to drive the car with this problem. Does the tapping harm the head gaskets? 2. How much would it cost to fix it, given it's the same problem you dealt with? Many thanks! Áskell, from Iceland.

    • @lozl
      @lozl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Askell, thanks for you kind words and thanks for the comment, much appreciated.
      Askell, I'm going to be completely honest, the noise is sometimes still there! However it is a lot better than is was so I know that in my engine it's a tappet related problem. It used to be that you had to rev it to 2500rpm before the noise would stop, since changing the tappets the noise now stops at just 1000rpm Nd it's also a lot quieter than is was. It also takes longer before the noise shows up now (hotter engine than before). So you can see that I know I'm in the right area, this is the first time the problem has improved.
      Its just that I couldn't keep on going with this... for the purposes of making a good TH-cam series, I had to stop somewhere.
      I think now that the noise will be totally fixed when I put some better oil in the engine, it has a cheap 10w40 semi synthetic oil at the moment. So I will try a better quality oil next.
      Regarding your question, I think it isn't harmful at all to drive it like this. It might be wearing the camshaft and tappets vert slightly quicker, but stresses on the camshaft and tappets are very low below 1000rpm. So most of the time the car is moving the rpm is above 1000 and the noise isn't there.
      If it is accelerating wear it will be limited to the valve train (cam tappets, rockers and rocker shafts) and won't do any damage to anything else in the engine, including the headgaskets.
      I've heard rattling similar to this on many engines, it's so hard to trace, but its normally something in the valve train (tappets, rockers or rocker shafts).
      I'm so sorry this wasn't quite the response you might have been expecting.
      Anyway the cost to me was basically for a new set of a tappets, and perhaps a valley gasket (if yours isn't reusable). I paid £200 for these tappets from ab ebay shop called "roverpartsoflondon".
      Did the noise start after some engine work, or and iil change or something?

      @askelljonsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lozl Thank you for the detailed reply!
      I'm glad to hear it isn't that harmful to drive it with this kind of sound. My car drives very well it seems, especially on the highway. The sound isn't there when cold and also not there say above 1200-1400 rpm or so. Therefore on the highway it isn't there, except maybe while going downhill etc. It comes and goes aswell it seems.
      I belive I bought the car with this sound but I couldn't hear it while test-driving. Obviously I should've test-driven it for longer, so I could hear the engine hot. I also didn't drive it much during the first weeks of owning the car, so I only noticed it about 3 weeks after I bought it. The previous owner didn't seem to know... Anyways I'm really happy with the car and I got it for very cheap, so that's cool.
      You talked about changing the oil. Would you recommend a thicker oil? What about Militec? Do you think that would help?
      Thanks again
      Áskell

    • @lozl
      @lozl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@askelljonsson glad you're happy with the car, I really like ours.
      I'm not familiar with militec, is that an oil or an additive?
      Yeah its a long shot, but I'm hoping oil that stays thicker when warm (maybe synthetic) might solve it as its all about thin oil leaking up past the tappet plungers.
      I have been avoiding valvoline VR1 20w50 is it has the zinc content that's not good for cat converters, but other YT contributors have commented saying they have done many miles with this oil and have had no problems with the MOT test (cars fine), so I was gunna give this a go. (It's mineral oil I think, but seems widely regarded to be the dtuff to use in a rover V8)

    OMG if you don't relocate the coils this next time you have the plenum off it would be a missed opportunity
    I had a noisy lifter for about 20k miles then it quieted down by itself.

    • @lozl
      @lozl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for comment Champion, much appreciated. Yeah I certainly considereal moving the coils, I really want to but I think k it would require new leads making up and we don't quite have the budget for luxuries like that at the mo. So "struggling on" os the the answer for now, unfortunately.
