Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman is my favorite out of any incarnation. Between her latex outfit, her makeup and the completely different tones of voice for the two sides of the same character are so purrfect. (Sorry, but I had to do a cat pun).

The darkest, violent and most controversial Batman movie ever made. The reason why it was controversial is because some McDonald's restaurants refused to sell any of their toys to a movie with a PG-13 RATING.

Chandra is technically correct. Mr Freeze *does* appear in this movie. If you look hard enough, you'll see a photo of him standing next to Max Shreck, displayed on Max Shreck's office wall, during the scene where Selina discovers Max Shreck's speech has been left behind.

I, too, have a little factoid: Christopher Walken's character, Max Schreck, was named after the German silent film actor best remembered for Nosferatu (1922) where he played the vampire, Nosferatu/Count Orlok. It's the oldest (surviving) vampire film.
Some of the style of this movie was inspired by early silent films from Germany for their surrealism.

This film truly cemented Keaton's Batman into Icon status in my opinion. Everything about this film is amazing, from the way it was filmed to the acting from the major characters. Christopher Walken was such a great choice for Max Shreck since he was eccentric to begin with 😂 There was a video game for this film released on every game system at the time and my favorite was on the Super Nintendo since it had the best graphics and controls.
You should definitely watch Batman Forever! It has more villains from Batman's "Rogues Gallery" and are superbly acted.

  • @brandonspain12345

Chandra's reaction and thoughts of the movie was very much how parents and children thought about the movie when it came out. They were freaked out by the movie and felt it was too dark, too violent, and too bizarre. You can tell Burton had more creative control and as a result, felt more like a Tim Burton movie rather than a Batman movie. (Hell, he's not in it very much.) McDonald's especially hated the movie. Especially when The Penguin was puking black vomit all over his mouth.
As a result, the studio didn't want Tim Burton to come back, and he left very early on and in his place was Joel Schumacher. Who was hired to lighten the tone of the third movie with something more family friendly and something that would please McDonald's. This was also why Michael Keaton left production after Schumacher told him "Why does everything have to be so dark? They're called "comic books" not "drama books.""

For me it's still the best Batman movie. As great as the Nolan movies were, as an actual Batman movie this struck the balance so well between the campness of the older era and the ultra dark of the the Nolanverse. This movie hit the tonal sweet spot for me and it has two of the greatest villian perfromances in a Batman movie...with a bonus Christopher Walken.

Fun facts: Tim Burton originally wanted Burgess Meredith, Mikey from Rocky, to play Penguins father since he was the original Penguin in the Adam West era. Tim couldn’t get him because his health wasn’t up to it. Tim got Pee Wee Herman, Paul Reubens instead to play Oswald’s dad. He also originally wanted Bill Dee Williams character from the first movie, Harvey Dent to be doing almost everything Max Shrek does but he couldn’t get him back. So he rewrote the character into Max Shreck. The end where Shreck gets Tazored, that was supposed to be Harvey Dent turning into Two-Face but he had to change it since he couldn’t get Billy Dee Williams back.

Billy Dee Williams was planned to return in Batman 3, tho. He did an interview a few years back talking about his role in Batman 3 and how Tim Burton wanted him, but the studios didn't. They didn't want a black Two-Face. His words. Then this happened with parents and it was enough to fire Tim Burton. You can find the interview with Billy Dee Williams on TH-cam still.

Not true. Daniel Waters, the writer of the film, categorically denied that Max Shreck was ever meant to be Harvey Dent. Three scripts were made. One from Sam Hamm, Daniel Waters, and the finalized one from Wesley Strict. None of them had Harvey Dent.

I was just old enough for the darkness and innuendo of "Batman Returns" when it came out (and had parents who weren't really paying attention anyway), so I don't really remember there being much controversy around it in my sphere. My friends and I were just a bunch of goth and punk kids who loved Tim Burton's style (starting with "Beetlejuice" and "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure") and enjoyed the movie for what it was supposed to be. For me, the third movie, "Batman Forever," started to lose a little of the mojo (as it moved the series from dark and charmingly goofy to full-on cheesy) and "Batman and Robin" was the one where I finally checked out. There was one moment near the beginning of that fourth movie (which I won't spoil here in case y'all react to it) where I legit slumped down in my theater seat and realized it was going to be a loooong movie. Reading interviews with director Joel Schumacher afterward, it was clear that he didn't understand the IP, thought comic books were "silly," and didn't care if what he put on the screen was stupid (because that's what comic books are... right?). In other interviews after it came out, George Clooney blamed himself for tanking the series, but I never thought that was fair. He could've been an amazing Batman... if the film he was in was directed by someone else.
Of that first series, "Batman Returns" was my favorite. Everyone was great but, to this day, Michelle Pfeiffer is still my Catwoman.
I don't know what other movies you two/Chandra haven't seen, but, if you like movies that look like comic books, "Sin City" is about as close as a movie can get to that. "300" is another great one that takes its shots pretty much directly from the comic page. And if you want to go real retro with it, "Creepshow" is a horror anthology movie that is filmed to look like the old EC horror comics of the 1950s. Any or all would be fun reactions if either of you haven't seen them.

  • @ieyke

So, here's the thing: I MOSTLY recommend watching it all in release order.
Like, YES, Mr. Freeze IS in one of the upcoming movies. BUT Batman The Animated Series reinvented Mr. Freeze completely from being a throwaway joke villain and turned him into the greatest villain in all of DC Comics/movies/shows.
Like the cartoon literally won an Emmy for the first Mr. Freeze episode and completely redefined the character forever.
Batman TAS is not TECHNICALLY a sequel to the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton Batman movies, but it's VERY VERY heavily inspired by them and works as a spiritual continuation of them.
And Batman TAS is pretty much the all-time gold standard for all things Batman, so just in general.....I recommend checking it out.
But ESPECIALLY before watching Mr. Freeze in the movies.
I mean.....you know how first impressions are....
Mask Of The Phantasm is phenomenal too, and you CAN watch it alone, BUT it works best as the Season 2 Finale for Batman The Animated Series.
BEFORE watching the Dark Knight Trilogy or The Batman, I would recommend watching the animated The Long Halloween movie.
The Long Halloween is the best Batman comic of all-time, and the animated movie does a great job of adapting it.
The Dark Knight and The Batman are both adapted from parts of The Long Halloween.

I hope that you two actually finish the quadrilogy before moving forward. Many TH-camrs go from this film straight to the Nolan Batman Trilogy. We would never have the Nolan films if it wasn't for the downfall of this series of Batman films. That is why I always try to appreciate even the worst adaptations of my favorite superheroes, who are Batman, Spider-man, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All of them have a crazy history of adaptations that many casual fans may have never heard of. There's a Japanese live action Spider-man series that inspired Super Sentai, the franchise that was adapted into Power Rangers.

Michael Keaton left because Tim Burton was fired by the studio and Batman 3 was never made. In fact, Michael Keaton only did the job as a favor to Tim Burton. That was some real loyalty right there between them. Billy Dee Williams and Michelle Pfeiffer was supposed to be back in Batman 3 too. That's why the ending looked like that with Selena. I know its a month late but this for as long as I could remember has always been my top of my top 3 go-to Christmas movies Tim Burton just knows how to put the Goth in Gotham. A lot of rumors have been circling for years that in the opening when the Cobblepots were in the park the couple they passed by were Thomas and Martha Wayne and the baby in the white stroller was Bruce. While never proven it adds a nice layer to the Batman vs Penguin dynamic. Both the son of a wealthy elite Gotham family both robbed of an ideal childhood but Bruce never let his trauma define him he channeled his anger and vengeance to become a superhero. Penguin stewed in his anger and sought vengeance on the city he believed wronged him. But the real show stealer was Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer just brought a complexity and nuance to a character that at the time was a klepto gymnast.

The fact that Catwoman’s before she just died had her glasses’ shadow giving her the cat costume eye, her boss mentioned “cat” and she fell through a cat paper roof or whatever that was. + when the clown grab her and threaten her with a tazer then tazed him that’s literally how she killed herself at the end. "You don't really think you'll win, do you?"
    "Things change."
    "Meow."
"I saw her first... gotta fly!"
Fun Fact: The fish that the Penguin (Danny DeVito) eats is a smoked trout.
Location Location Fact: The massive Gotham City sets were all constructed to be mobile, and were often shifted between days of filming. Michelle Pfeiffer routinely got lost on her way to filming each day.
Cameos Cameos Fact: Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) stars reunite briefly at the beginning of the film as the Penguin's (Danny DeVito) parents, Tucker (Paul Reubens) and Esther (Diane Salinger). The wife of Batman co-creator Bob Kane, Diane Salinger, and Tim Burton make brief appearances.
Penguin Wangler Fact: The production wanted to use King Penguins, but the only tame ones in captivity were at a bird sanctuary in the Cotswolds, deep in the English countryside. So the birds were flown over to the States in the refrigerated hold of a plane. They were given their own refrigerated trailer and swimming pool with half a ton of fresh ice every day, and had fresh fish delivered daily straight from the docks. Even though the temperature outside frequently topped one hundred degrees, the entire set was refrigerated down to thirty-five degrees. The birds also had an around-the-clock bodyguard. The birds clearly enjoyed the experience as, following their stint in Hollywood, most of them had mated and produced eggs, the sure sign of a contented penguin. In an interview for television, Stan Winston told a little anecdote about how his crew were collecting the mechanical penguins after a day's shoot and found one of the live penguins snuggled up asleep against a mechanical one.

First, an amazing reaction. The way I see it, Penguin was practically the evil take on Moses. Like Moses, he was placed in a basket then placed in the river and founded by a new family. He knew who is parents were, but wanted revenge for being cast out by them and society. The original plan was to kill the current generation firstborn male children, but then he decided to kill everyone when Batman foiled his plot. When he dies, you feel sympathy, because it all started with him having vainful parents. When the cats surround Selina and bite on her, she gets 8 additional lives, signifying her fall out the window the lost of one. She is more of an antihero; she only kills if it is necessary or just. That’s why her and Bruce are similar yet different. They did fall in love, and Bruce attempted to try to calm her. He really wanted to help her recover from the trauma. However, Selina couldn’t reconcile with her chance to not kill Max. She felt like that she already crossed that line between good and evil. That’s why Michelle Pfeiffer is hands down the best Catwoman. Also Michelle did put the bird in her mouth for reals and when sheep, with the mannequin heads off, that was done in one take as well. 🦇🐈‍⬛🐧🖤💜💛

    the biggest issue was McDonald's had the deal to make kids toys;
parents complained, about this being too dark,
    & McDonald's complained
& fast food toys are a HUGE business for the studios (at the time, anyways)
so McDonalds was the main reason Burton got fired
    & they went comic-booky next...
    but if that didn't happen,
we night have gotten the reboot by Nolan
same with the movie The Untouchables,
Kevin Costner originally is holding a handgun in the poster,
Walmart demanded that be changed to be sold in their stores,
so now he's holding a badge & he has small fingers, so it looks like a baby holding a badge
    so awful
it's messed up that companies can change stuff
    makes me furious

I rewatched this not too long ago and it's pretty fascinating how different it feels from the first movie. 89 Batman felt like it wanted to be a musical so bad that they shoehorned musical numbers in whenever they could without anyone singing. Returns was more "Burtony" then I remember. I was a little kid the summer this came out in theaters and the marketing for this was so blatantly aimed at kid's. I'm talking commercials between cartoon blocks in the afternoon, toys, video games, a Mickey Deez Happy Meal tie in and I go see this with my mom and the Penguin has some guy squirting blood while he's biting his nose, Lol.

well, Warner Bros. demanded Prince & Burton have Prince songs in '89
neither wanted to do it & Burton thought it would date the movie
but i don't think they minded after it was so huge & they got paid mountains of cash
& McDonald's is why Tim Burton was fired after this for making this 'too dark'
      parents complained, McDonald's complained,
so Burton was replaced & we got the comic-booky ones next

I guess what parents didn't understand was this movie was tame compared to the comics. The killing joke was brutal, joker shoots Batgirl, and immediately takes sick photos. This puts her in a wheelchair. He then captures her dad Commissionor Gordon. Ties him up naked in a fun house and flashing photos of his bleeding naked daughter. Why? To prove it only takes one bad day to drive someone insane. And that was in a 1988 comic book.

  • @mattmc5069

1992 would be a great year for Batman besides this movie Harley Quinn would make her debut in September in the animsted series and Bane would make his intro in December in the comics. I don't think we ever got 2 rogue level villains introduced the same year. In Superman's world Doomsday was also introduced in September. So we literally got 3 classic villains introduced that year.

Definitely geared more towards kids (as odd as that sounds, as I was like 9 or 10 when the first Keaton Batman came out), so if you go in with that mindset, it softens the cringe a bit... but just enough, lol.

Please do Mask of the Phantasm next, and then finish off the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher series with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin at some point. Might as well watch all of them right? Also, I watched this movie in 1992 or 1993, on VHS, when I was in the hospital and it scared the crap out of me (I was five or six at the time). Even after my parents bought it on VHS, I didn't watch it again until I was in high school and got the four movies on DVD in a box set called The Batman Legacy, which contained the original barebones DVD snapper case releases.

You two do a very good job. Incisive, clever and sweet. You should definitely dive into the trilogy. Christoper Nolan alone is the main reason, but Christian Bale gives Keaton a run for his money. These are exceptional movies. A totally different vibe from Burton's quirky greatness. Nolan grounds his trilogy in reality as much as possible and delivers three of the very best super hero movies.
Then there is the recent movie THE FLASH. Not a great film but Michael Keaton KILLS IT! He is so good in it that it's worth seeing the film just for his return to BATMAN! Keep up the good work!

Personally, I wasn't a fan of any of the post-Keaton, post-Burton films in this first "Batman" series (they turned the cheese dial all the way up to 11), so my vote would be for you to jump to the Christopher Nolan "Dark Knight" trilogy. They're great, grounded, and really well done Batman movies, even though I wish Christian Bale had made a different choice for the Batman voice (because it gets old and kind of silly real quick). And, if you haven't already seen it, I think the most recent Batman movie with Robert Pattinson was the closest we've gotten yet to "the world's greatest detective" version of Batman from the comics and has my favorite take on a particular Batman villain in that movie. It's a young Batman (like, first year Batman), so Bruce Wayne hasn't found his charming self yet, but it's a great foundation from which to build into all that.

Since Pee Wee Herman/ Paul Rueben did a cameo in this movie, you can hear Selena saying the same thing Pee Wee Herman did in the movie, "Pee Wee's big adventure." Selena says to Max, "that's my name Max, don't wear it out or I'll make you buy me a new one." The actress that was trying to put gloves on the penguin was also in the movie "Pee wee's Big Adventure." Tim Burton directed that movie as well.

These movies were never really my thing they always felt too silly and later on with BvS it always felt hypocritical how people would critize Affleck's Batman for killing people (where him killing people was an actual plot point) while at the same time praising these movies that feature Batman setting people on fire and killing a henchman with a bomb. For me I was always indifferent towards the whole no-killing rule I always felt that Batman is a warrior and warriors kill people.
Changing subjects I would like to make a recommendation for a movie that has gone under the radar and people have forgotten about: The Prophecy (1995) with Christopher Walken, a very unique movie.

While this isn't the most comic accurate Batman film, it is easily my favorite Batman film. Everything from the performances to the set design is top notch.
When I think of the definitive Penguin, Catwoman, and Batman, I think of this film.
Burton did a terrific job blending his own unique visual style with Gotham and Batman's world. The first film felt like his style was constrained to fit into a Batman story and universe. This film is WB taking the handcuffs off and letting Burton go wild. IMO it made for a better movie going experience and embarrassment of riches.

Later that summer in 92, they had talk shows where a bunch of parents and their punk ass kids were actually complaining about this. I never understood this, even back then. I blame all these idiots for the change in direction with the franchise. Still, I can't deny that I still really like the next movie. It's worth watching just for Jim Carrey as the Riddler.
