My partner has two Harrington rods in his spine. He fell years ago and often loses feeling in his leg now. The dr flat turned him away from treatment when they realized he had no insurance. Yet, the kicker is, he’s not considered disabled enough for disability and was turned down for that too. The system will make one go crazy. Just sitting in pain watching life go by

That's so often what happens to pain patients who are either not insured or have low-level insurance. Should be Criminal for medical professionals to refuse to help based on damn Money!! 😠
About being denied Disability,.. you guys Need to look up a law firm who handles disability claims. They are very good at what they do, and will NOT charge you unless you win your case. And then their pay comes out of your back-pay check. It is well worth it!! Btw...almost Everyone is denied with their first time applying for disability. The disability lawyer will file an Appeal for your partner and get the ball rolling!😉 Good luck!😊

I too have two Harrington rods in my back top to bottom! I was 14 when I had the spinal fusion and I’ve had really bad pain ever since then so for the last 23 years, I’ve been dealing with some pretty crazy pain but the last eight years it’s been on a daily basis constant getting worse new diagnosis’ can’t walk anymore. Can’t bathe myself. Can’t clean my home. Can’t do nothing! I fought for disability for six years And I had a disability representative. I finally won my disability case this year! Don’t give up. Pain sucks not being able to get the proper care and treatment is horrible.

I've had 2 failed back surgeries. Had pain implant put in. Didn't even get to turn it on. I got a staph infection. 6 days after surgery, after they wouldn't listen to me something is wrong. They wouldn't call me back until I had my son take pictures and it exploded. Went back to the office and made them listen. The waiting room is full of future patients. I knew I was going back to surgery next morning. I was in the hospital for a month getting 4 strong IVs a day. It felt so much better after I woke up. It was unclean when it went in. They actually asked me if I wanted to try again. No thank you, I'll pass. I got to go home after that mo to go back everyday for 2 IVs for the following 6 weeks. They put a pick line in. It was great for 2 days. They took it out. Why did they put it in. I got no answers. Back to pain Dr. I think he's great but afraid to ask him if I can bump up a little. My whole spine still hurts. Legs hips. I had a fusion done no help.

If he/she can prove they have permanent nerve damage, such as with imaging and possibly an EMG, and I know all of this takes money, but if It can be proved, I was told when I was applying for disability these words, pain will get you possibly 2 yrs., permanent nerve damage could possibly win your case, depending on which state you live in and their guidelines.

I appreciate the nuanced and compassionate take you have on this. Not encouraging violence, but acknowledging how chronic pain can lead a person to become radicalized and that the medical system does not provide adequate support/treatment. I hope what happened spurs on a sweeping change in the health insurance and medical industrial complex for the better, but I dont expect that to happen because it will cut into profits and greedy people trying to make as much money as possible by exploiting people who need medical care is exactly how the system got to the state that led to this.

Prior to this I had not been on any meds for seven years. Seriously, at least make life less miserable while it takes forever to get health care approvals. It’s ridiculous that health care treats pain patients like addicts.

Chronic pain, in some situations, can dominate every moment. So I call it Pain Brain, in how it interrupts concentration.
It's important for one to connect with a trusted doctor. I also suggest a person could seek a therapist, to share such a sense of helplessness. Keep seeking a doctor who will provide compassion and get straight to the matter of alleviating and lessoning pain. Never give up seeking a way to improve quality of life!

My nephew has been in chronic acute pain for years. He basically is a shell of a man. Can not do much at all. The depression and “not wanting to be here” is extremely concerning. It totally brings you to a stand still. Miss diagnosed and many tests and procedures. Losing hope and no relief can take a terrible tole on everything. Plus family members who have to hear and watch this. Emotionally and physically drawing for all. The fear of something tragic may happen.😞😩

Just a small correction in your post. In medical terms chronic is long lasting and acute is sudden onset. To use both terms in the description of his pain would not be accurate unless it was said that he had acute in chronic and then it would be a sudden onset of pain that worsened on the already chronic pain. This is not to say your family member does not have chronic pain I just wanted to be sure the description is accurate in medical terms.

I do have chronic pain from being rear ended twice. I am college educated and had to go out on permanent disability with my laundry list of diagnoses from permanent nerve damage to stenosis to sciatica to Fibromyalgia and more. I've had 5 back surgeries in L5-S1 including 3 fusions and a multi level fusion in C4-C6. Now C3-C4 is herniated and I have a bone spur at the bottom of C6. It never ends. Yes it definitely affected my brain and rained on my happy parade, but I try to help other people. It sucks being in pain all the time. People like us are constantly getting judged from others and they do not have the concept that as fast as it happened to me, it can happen to anyone.

Constant pain can make it hard to regulate your emotions. Also, not being believed and denied appropriate care for long enough can make people very angry, possibly violent. The sense of isolation that not being believed creates adds fuel to that fire. Pain is a signal that our body is being harmed and needs care. When that's ignored and denied long enough, I imagine it probably registers in the nervous system as a threat to survival. And people can get violent when they feel their survival is threatened. Obviously it doesn't justify violence, but those are some reasons I can think of.
I'm sorry you are living with pain and aren't being believed. Friends should believe one another.

When I was in high school, my mom fell and dislocated a disk in her back. She would scream and cry all night long. I would get up in the middle of the night to help her. One night she was screaming and asked me to get the gun to basically take her out of her misery. I cried so hard and flat out refused and had to get my stepdad to take it away. She eventually ended up having surgery. That sure was a rough time.

Incompetence in the medical industry is rampant! As a small child, I learned this. My problem wasn't understood until I was 22. There isn't anything that can be done that won't ruin my life, so I just deal with it as life comes. I moved 1100 miles away, and now ive in a state where medical care is almost an embarrassing joke for being in America. Live, LAUGH, Love and Dance like it's your Last....

I have chronic pain I’m not violent and I’m not open to crazy suggestion either 😂
You learn to live with it, it’s my normal 🤷🏼‍♀️ always had pain and as a child I was told everyone was in pain, I believed that until I was a young adult. I suppose when it’s just normal and ordinary you’re not likely to become violent because of it…since it’s always been there

Can you explain what rsd is and how it affects the patient because those with it in writing are repeatedly treated as drug addicts and all we want is pain reduction considering nothing else can be done.

Few uears ago when my crohns disease started and all of different complications of pain (like fissure or fistul) plus when i relapsed i had to go for prednison and man steroid acne after that was horror, the pain of inflamated skin, the scars it left, just horrible and looking back at it, it was really dark time for my psyche so i understand one that gets corrupted by radicalization while experiencing chronic pain, sadly the pain is not all rainbows and lollypops, its actually scary what it can does to ones psyche

Being denied natural organic cannabis that contains enough THC for the entourage effect, coupled with lack of empathy from people in general due to not recognising the significance of not taking someone else's health disability seriously are a winning combination for rage attacks, especially if you have been abused and cheated a lot in your life. I actually learned recently that if I do have narcolepsy that rage attacks can be part of that, and that's without inclusion of 2 other disorders I have which cause pain. Anger specifically seems to stay if a psychologist has ever told you that your lack of anger led to other people cheating you. Eventually you "wake up" to this sense of having been gaslit, medically and psychologically, for the rest of your life.. unless you have access to cannabis, which is arguanly much better than being dependent on other psychotropics. Have you ever seen someone with Parkinson's using cannabis? 😮

I found a new doctor, and my insurance said no. I have Dandy Walker syndrome, so yeah, I understand why many people are feeling mad at the USA health care industry, and to be blunt, I myself at times feel like snapping, but that just isn't me. I sure hate the government for allowing these insurance companies untold power over our lives.

And my pain Dr told me Congress is going to vote on outlawing ALL paim meds. I said how can they do that?? Car accidents? Cancer patients? Spine injuries (one of the things I deal with daily)?? She said I know, I can't treat my patients without narcotics!, and don't know what were going to do. And that she's wondering if they are trying to clear out the population, because she's known of people die from heart stress due to pain. I'm furious at the thought.

I am living with severe chronic pain because of a laminectomy that went wrong. Unless you feel the pain, there’s no understanding. I would rather get medication from a doctor than find someone that I can get it illegally from. Personally I wouldn’t care if I died. I know it’s very risky, but sometimes it just doesn’t matter..

Finally. Why don't other doctors talk about the reality of chronic pain? I think it's because they know that insurance companies aren't going to pay for for comprehensive pain management so it's pointless.

Are you suggesting these patients are under-treated? When someone comes in with chronic pain as the presenting complaint, it is easy to overlook the other health issues you mentioned. Good providers will consider the cause of pain - the patient is focused on the pain and likely to under-report other problems.
Thank you for again improving our clinical skills.

I live with chronic pain daily for most of my adult life. I have many different medical conditions and issues I deal with all the time and complications. Dealing with something right now that is pretty serious from a procedure I had done on Tuesday and now have to go back in on Monday because of a issue that happened during that procedure 😬🥺
Chronic pain is no fun for anyone and it’s a real thing that some doctors need to understand a lot more about.
Where does this violence come in from though regarding chronic pain? I’m not understanding what you mean? 🤪

Well I have learned that when I am having a bout of chronic pain , I try to stay away from people , my patience’s short and I do not want to offend anyone . People look at you😂 like you don’t look sick .RA, Hashimottos ,sarcoidosis, pulmonary hypertension , Lupus can rear it’s ugly head at any time . I can see how people with chronic pain become hermits

    • @littlebettyscrafts556

      I have become this way.
It’s not easy for someone to be married or friends with someone who has to constantly think “Can I walk that far if I go ? Do I need my scooter or crutches ? I simply can’t today, ( not because I’m lazy ) I just hurt so bad “
The list goes on. My husband divorced me, and I’m not being a martyr, but I can somewhat understand , he found someone that can go drink and do fun things without always having to “plan” every step ahead. Her skin is clear without scars, etc. Taking pain meds is frowned upon by so many. They say why ? You take too much. (Even though I’ve only ever taken meds as prescribed )
I hear, “your just lazy, you can work with your mind just fine “
So…….. after many years, it’s me and my cat. Because a cat does not have to go outside to go potty, on days when I can’t walk well. I’m exhausted from “opinions, other people’s thoughts of me, not being able to keep up with everyone,
Yes, yes you can become like a hermit. And it’s very frustrating.
      Best wishes to you ❤
