Awesome lesson! Never noticed the benefits of looking at swing direction, always just kicked what came to mind haha. Also love the Pokemon reference lol. I look forward to future lessons!
This matches the way I learn! I learn way faster by breaking things down and having reasoning to start and then develop instinct vs instinct first then learning why. In the 2nd way I also end up developing bad habits that I then have to unlearn lol.
Wow, Back Kick counter to round house is now considered "Old School". I grew up doing that counter as a kid and learning from Billy Petrone. Now I feel old
Off the line in closed stance : counter roundhouse. This could be improved by a more detailed description of footwork. The defender is actually stepping back before countering with roundhouse. I had to watch a few times before noticing this because there is no commentary.
I Like The Kick Nada in Open Stance: Counter Round House, Its Awesome!!! Liked the Vid and Subbed the Channel. Also I'm a Yellow Belter. Like The Advance Kicks.
It's a devstating kick if you start the momentum at your shoulders and pull your body into it as you'll generate a nasty spin from it. Don't start the extension until your knee has passed your opponent to really drive the kick in, also use a immediate sting back so that way virtually none of the force has a chance to be reabsorbed by your leg to truly get the most from the kick
could you do a video on how to keep your upperbody during kicks.. I see that your uperbody is never bend and always upright, and it just goes lower when kicking higher
+Phillip Yun awesome thanks.. also will you do some smart combination kicks to score points? because going for a direkt kick is hard to score cause it gets blocked a lot.. the sparring tutorial has improved me a lot just by watching it.. so now some combos wold be sick.. you are very helpful
Way to poke holes in the swing direction concept! haha The swing direction concept is a mere rule of thumb and it assumes that the kick swings in 1 direction. For a front leg hook kick, the knee swings inward and then the foot swings the opposite way so it's hard to apply the concept. So the swing direction would be the direction that the KNEE is going in, not the foot. For example, to counter a left front leg hook kick, I would use a right leg back kick or left leg round house kick.
Do you have any tips on hitting the target past the opponent's guard? I lose a lot of my speed and technique when I try and slip kicks into the cracks in my opponent's guard.
This video is amazing !!! I do have a question though. I do understand why you used a front leg axe kick to counter a front leg round house kick but that did follow the whole rotation notion you were talking about. So I'm wondering if they're other kicks that can be used to counter front leg kicks that don't necessarily follow the whole rotation notion? Also to answer the pop quiz. I believe a spinning back kick can counter a tornado kick/ spinning hook kick. A front leg axe kick could also be a counter but it's a bit more risky.
Hi Juan! Excellent observation! There are a million counters to any offense. This is why I used the term, "rule of thumb" because swing direction concept is just a general way to strategize. There are tons of exceptions to it. You can get very creative without following this rule as well. Also, your answer is correct!!!

+Phillip Yun Thank you for your response! Also I just wanted to say you're a great inspiration to inspiring Taekwondo athletes. I saw your video about your experience in the WTC and it really humbled me on how much time, effort, and overall dedication goes into the Sport at the highest level. Keep up the great work!! I hope to meet you one day. :)
@@itsenzothephillip if I make the translations for these videos, would you upload them? I want to share this with my mates but they don't speak English. Let me know what you think! :)
that counter back kick works great used it for years back in the day and a few knock outs when i changed it to a wheel or hock kick to the head.

This is nice for basic roundhouse kicks, but what about linear kicks (front kick/side kick/straight punch)?
This is awesome. My 7 y/o son is a big fan of yours & this will be fun to watch with him. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you sir!!! Stay tuned for weekly updates!
Keep up the good work! Very didactic this "swing direction concept". thanks man!
Thank you! It's nothing new that I'm "teaching". They're merely observations I've gathered from experience
I woukd counter it with back spinning kick, since the 360 from my opponents would be from a closed stance
thanx for this information, i am in india taekwondo national team ,nobady explain me . i am 26 year old ,what can i play 2020 olympic games?
Hilarious! These vids are great!

Love this show. How does the swing direction concept go with front leg hook kicks? The kicker's open side is kind of obstructed.

Great video! I have one question, though. What does "off the line" mean?
+James Lee Hi James! Sorry, I should have elaborated. It's a kick using the back leg that is going forward.
