    I have watched these videos for a while and there is always something to be learned in the long range shooting arena. I have been shooting in both long range and extended long range shooting. I currently shoot a Sako TRG-42 in 338 Lapua with all the bells and whistles. I just can't get enough of it!

    The more I learn and the better shooter I become, the MORE your advise makes sense. I’ve been watching for several years, you’ve taught me and given me a lot to think about. My groups are now consistently between .5 - .7 moa with a great deal based on your advise. You Sir have taught an old dog new tricks! Yes I’m rewatching this video for the 3rd or 4th time because I learn more each time I listen to you.

    Fantastic description of technique. I love how everything you do is either data-driven or based on what is most comfortable for you (and thus creates good, repeatable data.) No preconceived notions of what 'ought' to be done or what is 'proper.' I really appreciate how everything you do on your channel you can defend in a logical manner without resort to appeals to authority or other such logical fallacies.

    Quite the education, presented very well. I see the shooting system you use is as monolithic as the ammo. Conventionally The rifle is braced against the body, but with your technique the entire system incorporates repeatable motion that is very well regulated in total travel and direction literally in one with the whole unit from the brake to your toe,> right toe,< left toe! Everything is working together and I really appreciate you sharing this particular aspect of consistent accuracy.

    I don't know what makes someone a professional shooter, and with that I don't know how your not a professional shooter!
    Awesome video mate, and being 6ft6 and the same weight as you plus a bad back and knees makes shooting difficult, especially on a budget using rifle stocks made for people a head shorter then me. Good to see a video on how to adapt to shoot comfortably for you and not being told YOU MUST shoot this way or your never gonna hit the broadside of a barn.
    Cheers from Victoria
    Also loved your reloading video, great to see someone who can shoot like you do but without all the ridiculously expensive "custom" gear. I'm running a nearly identical setup to you

    Let's just get this out of the way right now...SUBSCRIBED! Very well thought out and explained sir. Your knowledge and humility are a breath of fresh air, both of which go a long way toward gaining huge respect. I also like your "outside the box" thinking although in reality, your methodology is simply based on sound thought processes, attention to details, and applied physics. So, even though other "experts" might have various critiques of your shooting style, the bottom line is you get the job done...repeatedly. How you get there is moot. I don't give a rip what anyone says...you're a professional if you're ringing steel over 4K. I'm in the process of building a precision rig now and have been doing a TON of research on gear and techniques. Your vids have given me a lot to consider as I venture into this new area of shooting and I can't thank you enough. Keep them coming on any shooting topic you care to share with the world. We need more of what you're offering Mark. BTW...Texan here too and yeah...we'd get along just dandy. I'd totally dig having a few brews with you brother. Cheers!

    Very helpful! I’m new to precision shooting and an experienced shooter at the range told me my shooting position was too high, I use a Harris 9”-12” rather than a 6”-9”. Changing to a lower bipod is a big deal because I would have to change the height of my rear bags to match. Watching your video has restored my confidence that my slightly higher setup is just fine..

    You’ve certainly addressed an issue I’ve been pondering. Although I’ve never shot prone and mostly shoot offhand, the few times I check drops and zero from a bench I have to firm up. Otherwise my groups open up. I manage to deal with the muscle fatigue that comes with firm grips and solid muscle flex. And have gotten quite proficient. However, this video makes me realize shooting doesn’t have to be the equivalent of a gym workout where you come out all pumped up-lol.Even with heavier recoiling cartridges. I need to work on this relaxed muscle approach; particularly as I age. Apparently Mark has made me realize it can be done. I am less perplexed, now I have to practice enough to figur it out to achieve proficiency. As always, good input Mark. Thanks this was very helpful!

      sorry for mis-understanding. didnt mean product review but how you explained why you set up the way you do is good insight to what works for you may help me understand what may work for me.. that's all i meant.

      OK, you may get that with the next video which will go into how I set up a rifle for long range shooting.
      All the best and thanks for the comment.
      Cheers.

    Good enjoyable vids . What do you mean , it's the off season ?

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr Tundranutz Thanks, Off season means winter, less time in the day, dark when we get up, wet ground and crops in the paddocks where we shoot our long range stuff. I will probably do a video on what conditions we use to do the type of shooting practise we do, that should help it make more sense. All the best, cheers.

    I wish that I could shoot prone, but the lack of flexibility doesn't allow me to get into even a semi-comfortable position. But, I can still use a lot of your techniques to my advantage, shooting from a table.

    I am 6' 3" as well. Try one little change.
    Put a butstock on the ball of your shoulder, instead of nesting it inside the pocket between your shoulder and the collar bone. The first time in my life I had sub 1/2 MOA group was when I made that change. It took me more than 3,000 rounds to discover it!

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +HitAndMissLab As I said, some rifles need different things and if that works for you that's great, as I shoot in 1/4" to sub 1/4" groups, I might just stay doing what I'm doing. Cheers and all the best.FYI here is our last effort with Sam's 223 th-cam.com/video/SRj7OK-SNic/w-d-xo.html

      1/4" groups are proof enough. I had a large Magnum which would kick the hell out of me if I had it on my collar bone. I have a 338 LM that won't. I do like the central axis of having the gun more on the collar bone.

    Not sure if you will see this but I have the exact same stock and TRG bipod I want to mount it in the stock like you did. I have the finnacuracy adapter but it’s 2” away from the barrel. Did you mill that out and glue it in permanently or can you take itnout

      I cut the stock up and inserted then re-glassed in a piece that a manufactured to do the job, all custom Tim, cheers

      @@markandsamafterwork thanks for the info. I might chop that mount up from finn and attach it inside the stock somehow But I’ll be ordering a couple more muzzle breaks for my 7mm & 338 builds. Thanks again

    thank you for the good lesson. one thing - you mentioned your thumb pressure, but what about your three fingers? do you pull back with fingers or finger tips? how much pull? oops you discussed this after you said this was everything! thanks, and i hope you can get to california for some shooting.

  • @gamebugio

    What is the term for the slide you have under the butt of the stock? I think that is a genius attachment and am possibly overthinking in my search for it, hopefully you can tell me what I should be searching for!

    MarkandSam AfterWork, Thank you for showing us your technique. These are excellent shooting fundamentals, and these foundations will serve me well as I get into long range shooting one of these days. Do you do any other type of shooting outside of prone? I would love to see how you shoot when prone is not practical for whatever reason and what consistency and accuracy you can generate there.

    Each body is different, this video finally allows the individual to find the sweet spot that allows you to become one with your rifle. Placing rounds on the target is the goal...not looking like a pro....hit the target says it all!

    Isn't it a pisser that other countries have such a wonderful variety of diesel vehicles to drive out to the range, of course. And all we have is a handful of full size pickups?

    Hi Mark great video ,
    one question about your set up though.
    I recently purchased a Sako trg 42 338 lapua mag and very happy with it.
    How did you manage to raise the cheek piece up so high without optional spacers? Thanks

    Would you shoulder a rifle the same way if you were shooting off hand or would the butt of the rifle go more towards the “pocket” of the shoulder?

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different to off hand, but exact place that depends on details etc, Cheers

      @nono559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MarkandSam AfterWork would you have videos on it? I’m having trouble with cheek placement, is the stock suppose to be under the bone?

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nono559 No I don't have any thing on off hand, I use many different techniques, depending on the rifle and the shoot, check riser/ stock to face is all personal preference, jaw, cheek, cheek bone, firm contact, light contact or no contact, etc, etc, as said depends on details. Find someone that shoots the same discipline and see what they can offer, Cheers
