It's been 51 years for me of hearing how Rutgers will break through and make the big time. This is one in a very long line of heart wrenching defeats. Sciano is not the guy to bring the team any further than he has so far.
Just want to say the podcast was phenomenal. I love in Boca Raton. Was hoping citrus, but now praying for Boca Raton bowl. Regarding basketball, Ace should have taken the ball to the hoop, maybe dish last second if someone wide open or at the very least martini runs hard into the pass. Or they get the ball to Harper. I’ve been a huge Rutgers fan since 07. I’m from Marlboro, NJ. Seems like our basketball team is the only one with the great trajectory we have all been hoping for. Not sure what happens next year after Ace and Harper. Football has just been crushing our souls forever. Other than loyal fans, who would want to endure the never ending pain Dave Gold
Great show as always. Could not agree more with Fonseca. Well said. The dude has been on fire lately, since he went off in the corporatization of sports a few weeks ago.
Before I watch this as an Illini fan I want to thank you for the timeout. As a football fan I want to say I wouldn't be mad he took the time out even if I was a Rutgers fan. Had the Illinois kicker made it and he didn't call a timeout ppl would be screaming as to why didn't he ice him he had 3 timeouts. What I will say is what the hell was that secondary doing on that final play? How do 5 guys let Bryant score let alone not even getting a touch on him. Why even blitz when you only had 1 sack all game. At worst Bryant still makes a catch and sets up a closer FG attempt but with that wind who knows how that would of turned out. So to me the all anger should be on the final play call after the FG - TO. When Bryant caught the pass and ran it in for a touchdown all I could say to myself is "Rutgers just pulled an Illinois", holy shit. Sorry we Illini fans still have PTSD and are getting used to this thing called winning.
That's the difference between coaching, Brett Bielema has proven he can coach and recruit kids and win. He has won everywhere, Schiano hasn't. He is always full of excuses, cannot coach, players break a finger and then redshirt until next year, the coaching is horrible, and they only know how to form bad habits. Winning is a habit that eludes Rutgers. It's old, I feel bad for the players, but you still need to make a tackle. It's pathetic to watch this team play...they shouldnt be even going to a bowl, it's just hard having a BigTen Team in New Jersey near just about everything and cannot recruit or market the school better to get the kids and coaches to come . Stop hiring guys that have no proven track record of winning. Schiano isnt the guy for the job......The right fit for Rutgers...lol how about Rutgers get the right coach for Rutgers.
IMO the reason this season has been such a disappointment is because the defense this year is SO bad compared to the Schiano norm. If the defense returns to form next year, then I do believe the injuries were mainly responsible, and not within Schiano's control. Of course after years of suffering poor QB play, it's ironic/sad that the year we finally get a decent QB, the defense goes off the rails.
If a team is going to beat you with a 58 yard FG, let him and congratulate him. You don't ice him. Has icing ever worked? By icing the kicker, he iced the defense. Rutgers was going to lose this game with a FG since the defense could not stop Illin pass attack.
To say this came down to one icing the kicker decision is lazy. Yes, he was wrong to ice the kicker whether he admits it or not. But how about not even being in that situation? Athan's fumble changed the complexion of the game no matter how great he played down the stretch. Momentum is real. Instead of being up 24-9 we're up 17-15. It NEVER had to be that close! What they really needed to do was just DO THEIR JOB! And how about NOT knocking YOUR OWN FRIGGIN PLAYER out of the game on what was already a skeleton secondary. Once Eric Rogers went down, i had this gut feeling we were going to get shredded and that's exactly what happened. How about the devastating PI calls to keep Illinois drives going? There were plenty of situations that could've kept points off the board for Illinois, it's just easier to call out icing the kicker. If they did what they were supposed to do, icing the kicker is meaningless. 23 points in the 4th quarter when Illinois scored no more than 9 in every other quarter was the REAL story. Illinois didn't just decide to TURNI IT ON in the 4th quarter. This was a meltdown of epic proportions and that frggin bonehead icing the kicker was just the cherry on top. This one will hurt for awhile. However, I will still take a 7-5 Rutgers who had a chance to go to the Citrus Bowl than a 78-0 loss at home to Michigan any day of the week. If that makes Brian angry, so be it. I've been a Rutgers fan longer! You want next level wins, help raise funds in NIL.
Schiano said IL made 1 more play than RU, which is true. There were a number of plays that if just one went differently, RU wins. But when one of those plays is also the LAST play of the game, the loss feels much more intense, especially when an RU win puts us in the driver seat for the Citrus Bowl. Going back to Detroit will be bittersweet knowing what could have been. I'm a lifelong Cubs fan, and winning the Series in 2016 scratched that off my bucket list. I was sure they'd never win a WS. I'm confident RU will make it to the Citus Bowl someday, preferably before I pass on to the great stadium in the sky.
@@MichaelDozier-j1b This year feels more like 2005. You take a beating from Louisville but still win enough games to get to a bowl game. You play ASU tough but lose. This year, unfortunately is an intermediate step, note the breakthrough YET. If they go 7-5, it's a still a good step. 6-6 would be disappointing but they need this step. Athan has another year of eligibility and players are getting valuable reps even in losses. Those potential of those receivers are through the roof (if we can keep them). Rutgers needed 2005 to breakthrough in 2006. If the cubs can win a WS, anything's possible lol! I think Andrew Dawson was the only guy to get an MVP on a last place team, lol!!
The slightly more inspired team kept making plays and had the players to make those plays and overcome stupid mistakes. If Illinois (and I realize Rutgers could say the same thing) had made half the penalties, especially throwing out the personal foul, this game would not have been close enough for us to be talking a heartbreaking loss for Rutgers, it would of been a blowout for Illinois.
@@AjaxtheGreater33 I hope RU is up for MSU...Saturday was a tough one...and not much at stake for RU now that Citrus is off the table. Of course 7-5 is better than 6-6...but the level of excitement is way lower than if we'd won. Yep...the Cubs were last man standing once Boston won the WS in 2004. My Bears won it all in 1985 so that box is checked. I had no idea Andre Dawson (the Hawk) won MVP with the Cubs....he was fun to watch.
Most football teams, regardless of schedule, need to have a few consistent years of being over .500 before they breakout and become perennial winners. That's just the normal trajectory of turning a program around. Of course, there are outliers, but those are not the norm. Rutgers is on the right path, they will be a good B1G program, they just need to put together a couple of competitive seasons first. For example, James Franklin had two seasons of 7-6 before breaking out at Penn State, Greg Schiano went 16-19 for the 3 years before the 2006 season. These things happen in increments, just give it some time.
@whartonseas I never said it was about a single play call, I'm saying the opposite actually. What I'm saying is that based on how other programs have been rebuilt throughout the years, we're not as far off as most RU fans think
6 or 7 wins with the easiest schedule they will ever have, the returning core of players and the upgrades at QB and receiver is a major step back. It's a legitimate concern that Greg will ever lift us beyond this level.

They need to find a coach that wins at the FCS level, they know how to recruit and definitely how to coach. SCHIANO isn't the guy

40 years of disappointments, but something about this one, really cuts deep.

More brutal? Losing football game with 4 seconds left or basketball losing to Kennesaw State?
Go Illini
Well that really sucked rutgers fans
You’re not the only one who lost sleep Steve. Just when I calmed down I watched the b-ball game.
Wondering how Schiano's terrible decision will impact potential recruits. Why go to Rutgers who has a questionable "field" coach.
Fonseca. You were looking into the future for basketball, weren’t you?
