Massive Young Chinese Move to Thailand, China Is Now Facing Its Largest Unemployment Push in History

  • China's stringent "zero-COVID" policy, in effect for three years, has exerted immense pressure on its economy, leading to significant challenges. Concurrently, the job market in China is deteriorating, leaving many youths unable to find employment. This has driven an increasing number of young Chinese to seek opportunities abroad, with Thailand, particularly Chiang Mai, becoming a favored destination due to its comfortable lifestyle and relatively low cost of living.

Thailand has never been colonized for a reason. I will tell you what, the chance of Thailand becoming a Chinese city is "0%". Unlike in the Cambodia, Thai people DO NOT tolerate any foreign elements that destroy their culture or their livelihood. Chinese has no chance to dominate Thailand, it is the other way around, because the last time I remember Thailand turned my Chinese great grandpa into Thai, and later generations identify themselves as Thai not Chinese.

Thailand is a wonderful and welcoming country, she has assimilated many immigrants before but this wave is different and will not work well for Thailand in the long run. Previous immigrants China were willing to integrate with Thai culture and people, they became Thai, adopted the culture. But these new economic refugees had a derogatory attitude towards SE Asia countries prior to this, they will not integrate, will not adopt the host country's culture, won't give anything back to the society which welcomes them when times are tough...Thailand needs to protect her own border, her country from marauding horde of economic refugees from China who destroyed the local culture and local environment.

“No pollution or smog???!!!” Pollution and smog are HORRIFIC in Chiangmai! Chiangmai is one of the Top Ten worst cities in the world for air pollution! Bangkok too! Get your facts straight. Do some research. I’ve been to Thailand ten times over the past 35 years. I’ve seen it really change a lot. I usually stay for 2-3 months each time. I spent nearly three months in Chiangmai in 2019 just before the Pandemic started. There were many THOUSANDS of Chinese tourists there at that time. I was very worried about possible stampede conditions at Chiangmai’s Sunday Market which starts each Sunday in the afternoon and goes on till late at night. It was hard to even exit the crowd as it was packed so tight with mostly Chinese tourists. And now there are even MORE!
The Thai government very closely watches your every move. As soon as you check into a hotel or guesthouse they must immediately report your location to the government. They always know where you are. Chinese won’t be able to just ‘Move to Thailand.’ They will always have to have the proper visas.
Thousands of Chinese are flooding across America’s Southern Border now and applying for political asylum. They can afford expensive plane tickets to Central and South America. And then stay in hotels and pay bribes to get them to the U.S. Border where they simply walk across!

Good post. I've lived in Thailand on and off for 20 years. Been here the last 7.5 years. I was always a massive fan of Thailand, best country in the world etc. Now though, it's CHANGING. Post-pandemic, the pollution is almost unbearable. I'm down in Chonburi, the last "cool" season (ha!) was hot because of the pollution. I remember I would call the cool season in Chonburi "winter" because it was not unusual to see Thai people in long-sleeve jumpers and jackets, and my home would be quiet because the fan would be OFF. Crystal blue skies, WIND. Some of the most beautiful weather I ever experienced was in the cool season in Thailand. Now? The last "cool" season had only white skies from smoke, not clouds, day after day. The first 4 months of 2023 felt like just white skies and the smell of smoke in the air, day after day. It's already started this December to be polluted again. Can't see more than a few km sometimes (in open areas). For example, on a typical day back in Jan-April 2023, you could NOT see Koh Lan from Pattaya which is an island just a few km off the Pattaya shore. What a joke! That is serious pollution. If you were a tourist coming to Pattaya, you would think "what the heck is going on here?". I didn't notice it this bad before last dry season. I've lived through perhaps 12 or so cool seasons in Chonburi province. I know what they were like in the past. If this dry season is as bad, I cannot live here. I might have to relocate to the south of Thailand which I heard has better air quality.
And well, I'm just going to say it. The nature of tourism has changed in Thailand. Now you have huge Chinese tour groups that can dominate a restaurant or service, and they are LOUD. There's a few infamous videos of Chinese groups basically ravaging buffets. I sound like an old guy shouting at clouds, but I remember Thailand having much more discerning tourists who would be more courteous of the people around them.
Furthermore, post-pandemic, the famous Thai friendliness is just fading away. People have a burdened vibe to them, like they're dealing with one problem too many, so there's less of the friendly banter. I don't blame them, I'm not demanding people be friendly if they themselves are feeling so bad / stressed - it's human nature. However, it is robbing us all of that Thailand I remember in the early and mid 2000s up to pre-pandemic.

@@futureofmoney3527 I first arrived in Thailand in the Winter of 1988 on my way to India. Spent a week all around Bangkok. Fell in love with the amazing, exotic culture. Then went to India which was HORRIFIC as far as air pollution goes. I’d spent 5 months in India in 1979 and I thought it was bad way back then. But by the 1988-89 Winter it had gotten at least 10 times worse. After 3 months in India I couldn’t wait to get back to squeaky clean Thailand. It was like Heaven after being in India. I went down to Ko Samui. This was before they built and airport there, far fewer tourists. Absolutely loved it! And then went to Ko Phi Phi. Loved it even more. Thailand still hadn’t been discovered by the masses yet.
Have been back 10 times like I said. Thailand has really changed so much. Chiangmai in the early 90’s was very different, much quieter. It still hadn’t been overrun by tourists. You never saw Chinese tourists way back then. Or Russians either. And now there are Indians everywhere. Pattya feels like India now! Not good.

@@jmseipp honestly, it's great to hear from someone with the experience you have. I feel gaslit by expats who've only been in Thailand a year or two. They casually say things like "oh Bangkok? Well, it's horrendous in the dry season, duh! Always been like that!". Not true. One measure of pollution in the dry season is ambient air temperature. I remember long "cold spells" (relative to Thailand) when I lived in Bangkok in the mid-2000s. Crystal blue skies. Day after day. This year has been the worst I've experienced in terms of pollution. I don't know if it's some weird El Nino-type effect? It seems like so many areas of Thailand are trapping pollution/smoke from fires more than ever whereas in previous seasons there was more wind to help dissipate? Or more fires this year? Something has changed much for the worse - to the point that it's becoming actually miserable to live here on high-pollution days. You can't ignore it when you smell smoke everywhere you go.
YES, Pattaya is over-run with Indian tourists (I live quite close to Pattaya). Pratumnak Hill's first language is basically Russian. Despite them building a tunnel on Sukhamvit Road before Pattaya Klang, the traffic is horrendous these days (kinda miss Covid days!). Moreover, I actually don't enjoy going into Pattaya because I feel like even the ... and I'm just going to say it.... the Thais seem less friendly there. I think Pattaya is getting to everyone. I don't blame them in a way, but the vibe feels a little "cold" there now. Never thought I'd EVER say that about any place in Thailand. I always relied on the Thai friendliness, and always saw Thailand as a haven to get away from the western "bad vibes".

@@futureofmoney3527 Bangkok keeps GROWING Bigger and Bigger! The fires the farmers set to burn off the remains of the crops from the year before are horrible for air quality and technically illegal but no enforcement ever happens. And the Songtayo pickup truck taxis in Chiangmai all have diesel engines that spew tons of exhaust creating terrible smog. I don’t understand why they don’t outlaw them as they have in Bangkok. Taxis in BKK now run on LP Gas. It was really horrible in Bangkok back in the late 80’s when I was first there. Every vehicle was belching black smoke. Black soot on your Kleenex every time you blew your nose. Imagine what that does to your lungs!

Don't worry about Thailand. They still have a military regime that is been very strict with immigration and there are a lot of things foreigners are not allowed to do, it's not like Europe or the US. If they let them in, they will do so only to the extent that it benefits Thailand. A lot of the companies that left China actually did move to Thailand, India, Vietnam, and Indonesia, so they might actually be in need of a few extra workers to please those investors and show that the country has the workforce to welcome those investors.
