When I get a non R version, swapping the stock battery out for a lithium ion battery will be done right away. That issue is not unique to KTM. @@JohnTYoung
"If the 890R was as reliable as a Honda, everyone would be riding one". Truer words were never spoken! Great review. Keep us updated, please, as things progress. I have 1,000 miles on my 23, no issues yet, though I worry about the bike stranding me if I take a big trip with it. But like you correctly stated, no other ADV bike has the features or performance to match this. The Aprilia might be closest, but the dealer network issue is very real. Keep up the good reviews, we appreciate it.
Thanks Ian, I really appreciate it. It’s partially your fault I went with the Adventure over the T7. LOL. But we’ll get the bugs worked out and then go Heavy Enduro on its ass.
No issues on my 890R so far either except for a leaking front tyre (wheel sealing, valve or tyre bead). I had a warning flash about fuel level sensor, that was fixed with a software update at 1000Km service and semed to change how the range are presented as well compared to friends 890R's that had not been on service yet. I did not have any problems with the 790R either before i traded it in for the 890. As said, keep it up and congrats to a very nice bike to ADV on. Cheers guys 🍺
Sorry boys, I wouldn’t own a bike that I would worry about leaving me stranded anywhere, let alone a big trip….I’ll stick to my T7. The thought of it leaving me stranded has never even crossed my mind.
@@JacoT7_ADV I'm on my 5th season with a 790/890 never even been close to be stranded. Not a missed single beat so far. I have full confidence to go anywhere with my bike.
@@Braapncamp I wonder if it’s an issue with where or when they were assembled then? I’ve had lemon vehicles before that I had to just cut my losses after the car (BMW) was in the shop every other week for a new issue every single time. But the fact that he said If you have one issue with these bikes, you should immediately take it back and get your money back or get another one, makes me want to steer completely clear of any KTM with electronics. I guess I just like the simplicity of the T7, even though that comes at the expense of the performance of one of these monsters! I’ve ridden my buddy’s 890 Rally, and it’s an absolute savage. I’m glad you haven’t had any issues, and hopefully never do. Keep it pinned brother!
I wanted a small light weight ADV bike to ride in my 60's. So I bought a KTM 390 in Dec. The throttle would just go to idle while riding. Sometimes 20 times in 10 miles. KTM replaced the bike. The new bike did the same. In the end, it was a bad throttle position sensor. It took me 3 months to get a working bike, but I am so happy I stuck it out. The 390, despite critics, is an unbelievably capable bike both on and off road. I am leaving in a week to ride the NMBDR with a friend. Stick it out, John, it'll be worth the effort. But, come on KTM, get your quality under control. Maybe you need to fire some people and hire a Japanese Six Sigma expert! Seriously!
@@JohnTYoung I’m rooting for you and the bike. I’m a total Honda Fanboy, but since they sort of refuse to build a “Halfrica” Twin, I’ve been looking hard at KTM. Currently, I’m on the fence between getting a bike that’s too heavy and too top heavy for my abilities off road (Africa Twin) or the 890/890r and worrying about reliability. One last thing, did you ever consider the Base 890?
I want to like the 390 due to the amazing value. But as a very large human, I worry about its size and power and ground clearance off road. What level of off pavement do you ride with it?
@@waltermitty7452 Well so far mostly road because I'm still afraid it's going to die. LOL. But eventually 50/50 maybe. Long road trips to crazy dirt roads maybe.
I am looking forward to all your (mis)adventures on the 890 R. Despite the gremlins, I think it’s a fantastic machine. I also appreciate your candor and unapologetic no-nonsense approach to reviews, so overall I think this is a win for everyone.
@@JohnTYoung Fair enough my man. I've spent 10 years as a technician for most major manufacturers. I just hate it for customers when something like this happens. And in my experience there is no school like the old school 👍 Trying to figure out root of the 890 immobilizer issue 🤔 my guess is either bad hard parts like the antenna or actual keys, or a wacked out ECU. Did your dealer pin point the ECU?
I was going to get a ktm 890, but i stopped at a yamaha dealership first. Seen the T7 in all her glory in my favorite color and decided right then and there that i had to have her. Had my t7 for about a month and i am absolutely in love with it.
This sounds EXACTLY like my experience with the 790R - that's why I got rid of it. I had about a dozen 1 hour ( 1 way) trips to the dealership and fiiiinally gave up on it. I always said "When it's running, nothing runs better.". But, it rarely ran because it was always at the dealership. So, I sold it. Sad to hear that they're still persnickety. Do better KTM!!!!
I bought a 450RL partly because of your videos but I went the T7 route for the second stable mate. I don’t plan to push the T7 as hard as some do, I guess. No jumps or fast single track is in the plans for it, just forest roads, mnt passes and highways. It handles the baby heads and ledges really well in stock suspension form and I don’t ever worry about its reliability. The ‘Whew!’ at the end of the video when it started was classic.
Hey John. Sorry to hear your troubles with your KTM. Hopefully you can get things sorted out and can enjoy it. Really appreciate your effort in making the 450L videos. Been some good info.
We appreciate you taking one for the team, I really want a 890r but I am skeptical, not wanting to be stranded 4 hours from a dealership. I f they were mechanical gremlins like the rear shock deal they had a while back, that I can fix but all the electrical issues I would be helpless without the software etc. I kept my Rl for short trips and took the Tenere pill for longer trips and after a few dollars and getting a feel for the altered weight load, single track isn’t bad. I look forward to future updates and videos
Yippee, here we go with all new adventures on a whole new bike!! Honda should pay you handsomely for showing how great the 450L model is... and now KTM will likely get some great publicity! Ride safe, thanks for your content!
Had the Aprilia Tuareg 660 and really liked it (tubeless tires, great electronics, carried its weight low) but eventually sold it after buying my 450L, (much easier to pick-up and I can take it places I wouldn't dare take a 450 lb. bike - I know my limitations), which I'm now selling in anticipation of the delivery of a KOVE 450 Rally (better road manners allegedly and has switchable ABS). Eventually, that will be sold as I try another bike yet to be manufactured. Trying new bikes brings me joy and I hope this KTM eventually brings you a great deal of happiness. I look forward to your videos of the journey.
Bad luck mate... I went through the same process a few months ago and ultimately bought a BMW 850 GS and it has been brilliant. I'm over 70 and often travel solo to quite remote areas in Australia and the Beemer hasn't skipped a beat so far. The dealer also sold KTM's and advised me strongly (on the quiet) not to buy one for the reasons you describe here and more. He was so right cause at my age there's no way I want to be stranded on my own in God knows where...
I have 2023 850GSA and totally agree with you. Longer warranty, and there are two BMW dealers within 10 miles of home. Reliability is THE criteria for an adventure bike. All the performance stuff doesn't even come close as a criteria. After all, people have toured the world on CT90s.
I was debating between the Africa Twin and 890 Adventure R. I had a Husqvarna 701 Enduro for 2 years and 22,000 Kms with absolutely 0 issues so I must have gotten lucky. I went with the Africa Twin since I was sure my luck would run out, lol. I think the 890 is perfect for your type of riding. The KTM traction control and off-road ABS are unbeatable and all other companies are years behind.
@@spikejnz ahahaha tiger better than AT, bitch please, i wasn't even considering anything from triumph. European reliability, and japanese lack of character. I got 18 AT with dct, and she not wild,. suspension could be better esp if you like aggro offroad, but overall its fantastic, i sleep without worry cuz i know she will always start, and auto box is best thing in the world, especially offroad. Also looks best.out of nowadays adventure bikes.
@@Angry-Lynx European reliability? Meaning ... I do oil changes and lube the chain and I'm good? If so, yeah you're right. And lack of character, nah I think not. This bike has all the character you could want. Don't take my word for it--just watch every review comparison between the AT and the Tiger 900 RP, and the RP comes out on top. Every. Single. Time.
I got an 18' 701e with about 12k and I've not had any issues except the key breaking off in the cylinder which was probably more my fault but the keys are cheap metal.
As a new 1290SA-R owner i can say I have been fortunate in only having a leaky water pump gasket. My buddy on the other hand with his ‘23 890, hasn’t had the issue you have had but a couple non the less. That said, these bikes are AMAZING off road and surprisingly good on road. It’s a crying shame such a great handling bike is surrounded by crap electronics that were bought from WISH. Best of luck to ya and I hope everything gets ironed out.
Stick with it John. I've been a very happy owner of a 2019 790R and it's been super reliable since new. Done 30000km so far and plan on keeping it. Fantastic travel bike and as you said ready to go out of the crate. Only mods I've done are bashplate, footpegs and tower brace. Also have a 450L in my shed that I'm setting up for adventure. Tasmania has some pretty tricky country for the big girls. Great work with your channel.
The suspension on my t7 is a DREAM compared to what I was on before, so I don't even notice it. It's all in what you plan to do with it I suppose . So far I click the settings up 7 clicks and am good to go for my weight and load out
I have a 790 and it is absolutely fun to ride. Only problems i got was warning on TC and gas but they stopped once I restarted the engine. This was no big deal but it shows there are bugs in the system. This happened very few times and apart from that the bike has been flawless. My only dislikes are more with the warm airflow cooking your legs well done when in traffic, the suspension which are tough and the fact you need to start the engine 3 times b4 it really starts(I suspect this is coming from the tank design). You cannot expect a bike pushed to the max. to be super reliable, this is part of the deal when purchasing KTM especially when driving offroad, this is why it is better to drive in a group rather than alone especially during the first thousand kms.
Hello John - I went over the same decision process. Looking for a machine that would be great for big trips and off-road. T7 was an option, but once I drove the new Honda Transalp, the comfort, the engaging engine fun, and fantastic reliability sold me on the bike. My solution to expand the machine capabilities was not expensive. I replaced the stock tires for fantastic Motos Rallz and installed the TOURATECH PROGRESSIVE FORK AND SHOCK SPRING KIT ($400), to make the rear and front suspension suitable for off-road. So far, I am super happy. You do not need to spend $3,000 on an entire suspension system, unless you are looking into ripping at fast pace at enduro terrain, which is not safe anyways. The Touratech progressive system solution will transform your Transalp / or T7 off road capabilities and you will be happy. Again, I considered buying the KTM, but it is so hard to beat the piece of mind that comes from owning a Honda or Yamaha machine in terms of quality and reliability. Good luck! KTM should just replace your bike for a brand new one at this point.
Great review, I like how you are being honest about what's so great about the bike and what's not so great. Best comparison ever to that X we all wished we had. I just purchased an 890 Adventure and have yet to ride it and hopefully it'll be solid.
Sweet bike. I like my crf450L. I drop my bike too many times to have one of those big heavy bikes! Looking forward to the videos. Also putting an immobilizer on a motorcycle with a key is pretty crazy.
Sorry to hear you got a lemon man. I think you’re spot on with swapping the bike out for another one once you have problems. I’ve been pretty lucky with mine. However, I did find multiple wires in various places pinched. The entire bike runs through a CAN Bus communication protocol system, which is quite sophisticated, and makes me nervous if I ever have to troubleshoot it. I looked into buying a scanner, but they are ridiculously expensive. I do plan on trading mine in for a 2024 890 R model next year, assuming they get all the bugs worked out by then. Nevertheless, congrats with your purchase and I hope you get all the problems sorted out.
I have the same bike in the 2022 model and it has been flawless. I ride it very hard single track off-road rough conditions never an issue at all. Could just be the 23s have electronic issues?
I’ve got 600 mi on my new T7 and I’ve been thinking I screwed up and should’ve got the 890R. Hope it gives ya lots miles of adventure. I’ll be rooting for ya. Maybe next season I’ll get one
My buddy bought four 690's through the last 10 years and it's only his latest, a 2020, that gave him all sorts of headaches (all sorted now and fully kitted with the Aurora kit, a beast)
@@JinKazama92 The electronics are superbs, but unfortunately it seems we have to pay two prices for these nice gizmos: one in cash and one in the form of fear of the next thing stranding us out there in the boonies
I too went from a Honda to a KTM about 12 years ago and had nothing but problems at first. After working through the issues with the KTM the bike has been extremely reliable for the past 10 years. Don’t give up on the KTM.
Sorry to hear you are having such a bad time with the 890. I have a 2022 890 Adventure R and it's been great. I have blown two front tires riding it like a dirt bike in sharp rocks. I bought a 2022 450RL and I have been using your videos for advice this year. I put in a Rekluse last night and checked your channel first. Much appreciated! Hope you get the 890 straightened out!
I’m currently riding a DR650.. my next bike was planned to be a Yamaha T7 . But after drooling over the specs and some of the reviews of this new 23 ktm 890, I was starting to consider it over the T7 . Thr biggest draw to the T7 was reliably. I’m die hard yamaha fan from way back , but I do also own a ktm 300xcw. But I have heard about a lot of the quality issues with ktms modern adventure bikes . Even still … the new 890 looked so impressive that I was considering it despite the quality issues . After watching this .. I’m back to the T7 . No ifs ands or buts . Yamaha all the way . Thank you for the honest review 👍
I follow Rideadv in Australia and he has a fleet of T7’s. In his recent vid he said that his bikes have logged 300,000 kms with not a single significant issue. That’s impossible to ignore.
Nothing wrong with buying this bike once you think through the pros and cons. Lots to like about the 890 platform like you said. Also lots of gremlins and issues you may have to deal with though. People that don’t want to risk having to deal with the electronic reliability issues should explore getting the simpler Yamaha Tenere or explore getting the new Suzuki V-Strom (but who knows when we will actually see that).
I switched from a 2016 Vstrom 650xt to a Desert X and I couldn't be happier. Also got to ride the Touareg, T7, Africa Twin, Multistrada v2, 790, 890 and 901 Expedition. Even though the DDX has the best handling on the road and is a fun bike, unlike the 650(amazing engine reliability but no fun)... the KTM has something that makes it feel a lot more fun. It was very hard to choose and the money was an issue, I just got a little bit of financial luck so I said to myself that this is once in a lifetime opportunity. I am 38 and I have some back problems... Hopefully it won't get any worse or I'll have to try and get a GS since if it's dropped it rests a little higher. Ride safe!
I know the Africa Twin is a little heavier than the 890 and the T7 and not as much of a dirt bike, but I have a 450RL and an AT. The AT is still good off road, great for touring, and well it’s a Honda. I love my 2022 AT, and it’s been flawless. Plus it has traction control, cruise control, abs, lean angle sensors, wheelie control etc. all for 15k.
Welcome to the world of KTM ownership. As an owner of an 890 Adventure R and have had the same issues and one that you have not experienced yet, the KTM battery munching issue (battery going bad, on my 3rd in 18 months) I would recommend three things. A Garmin inreach , battery Jump Starter and a good friend with a truck. The KTM bikes are like a drug, you know you should not mess with them, but once you do your hooked. Looking forward to your next review.
Hi John so sorry to hear of the problems you are having I always think theirs no screw up just different decisions, It's good to see someone else putting a spotlight on the issues, I sold my v-strom 650XT an my dads gsxr 750 k9 to buy dad an I two 390 adventures, we managed to reject them at 147 and 269 miles but it was a real battle. Then had the same problems with a Himalayan which went back at 500 miles an luckily I'd bought it at a dealer that did bmw's to so they did the right thing. I'm currently deciding whether to go back to Beemers or an Africa Twin now we are moving to Scotland. so no more trail riding hence my 300 rally going. It's such a shame as I think the concept on them are amazing and the tick alot of boxes keep up the awesome channel :) an I hope you get sorted with it
So I’ve been a hater of the channel for some time now. Not really a fan of your content. But I applaud you for getting another Austrian BEAST. It's like all the other manufacturers are playing a never-ending game of catch-up. Clearly, power to weight is the ultimate rule. Forget about reliability; that's just a hoax made up by the media. 😄
For those who ride 5 miles from home, you may be right. Reliability is no big deal. It’s just a made up thing. Some of us though ride 1000 miles or more away from civilization let alone a dealership. Let your days be about riding, not repairing your bike. Why is this so hard to understand?
It was fun watching your new video, John. I love your upfront and honest reviews about stuff. Glad you will be making more video's of your adventures to come.
Kudos on your vid and review. Spot on. I upgraded from a 2020 790 Adventure to a 2023 890R. I had the Tech pack and heated grips installed. Love the suspension and handling improvements over the 790. Only glitch is that I'm getting more mileage out of my Motoz Adventure tires than my clutches. 11565 miles since February with at least 50% of that dirt. Just installed my 4th clutch pack while on the WABDR. I've checked the oil jet and drive shaft check valve and seem to be getting good oil flow. (790/890 clutches are a wet/dry clutch that rely on oil from a jet wetting them rather than sitting in an oil bath. I bleed orange. I'm using the clutch the same as my other 4 KTMs. I went with the Recluse Radius X (manual clutch) hoping to get better service. It lasted 672 miles. To Recluse's credit they are replacing the clutch pack under warranty. I'm continuing with the 890 trying to ride keeping the revs up (higher oil pressure and less strain on the clutch) and turning off the electronic assist when off-roading. Regardless, on any long trip, I'll include a spare clutch pack just like the spare tubes we carry.
Nice honest review! I’m looking into getting into biking. Never had a motorcycle before. With all your experience, would you recommend a drz 400 as my first bike? Looking for something bombproof to explore north Idaho’s backcountry forest roads on. I hear the drz 400 gets good reviews for off-road and dependability as a first bike to own. I will add the Ktm 690r and 890 look like a fun bike to play around on. I was looking at the Ktm 690r but have recently turned away from that idea given I’ve never owned a bike before and don’t want to spend that kind of money until I get more experience
What was the solution to the immobilizer issue? It seems like a lot of them are fixe by changing the battery out (because the old battery was toast) or because of some wires broken...curious what happened with yours?
Almost bought a 2024, they were giving a great deal at my local dealer. I've watched a lot of these video's and knew about the electrical issues but figured they'd fixed most of the issues on the 2024 and it would be under warranty. What I didn't know and I'm glad a friend told me is the 790 & 890 are having serious camshaft wear issues. Sure enough if you do a quick youtube search there are a bunch of video's on it, and KTM has not been very responsive to the problem. So yeah, ended up not pulling the trigger on the KTM, I'm leaning toward just getting a 10 year old BMW or Triumph with low miles. Something before they started loading up these adventure bikes with all these electronics!
I couldn't stop laughing at your analogy with the chick you use to date. Wonderful review Thank you. I'm really sorry you're having a hard time with this particular bike. Hope the dealers give you some kind of compensation for your troubles. Good luck and hope to see more content like this from you soon.
Thanks for bringing us along on this journey. You are taking a significant risk not demanding a swap out for a different Adventure R. Personally, the Norden Expedition has my eye, but I can wait on the feedback on it. Godspeed! I hope you are "over the hump" on the number and variety of issues.
@John T. Young Great Video. I followed your adventures on the CRF450L. I have a 450L and want something a little more road worthy as well. I'm SOOOO glad I just watched this video. I was going to purchase a KTM 890. Now I am not. But like you pointed out, there isn't another good option right now. I know I found this video late, it's August. Hopefully you've gotten all your bugs worked out and are having fun on your 890. In July I spent a week camping in Marble, CO and riding all over that area on my 450L. It was fantastic.
I sold mine because of electronic issues but wish it had turned out different, im now left with my old Yamaha Xt500 that iv had for 30 years, the sad thing is I loved the KTM but I live in a remote area and my bike is my only transport so I could just not deal with the breakdowns any longer, my Yamaha may be old and boring but I can depend on it and in my situation thats more important, hope you get yours sorted out though, they so much fun.
You seem like a really nice guy. I like your video personality. That’s such a stressful thing to go through. I feel for you. I hope you get it all sorted out. I also hope KTM gets things sorted out. All the reviews I have watched have claimed that the KTMs are incredible when they are running properly. Last year I researched mid-sized ADVs to decide on what to purchase in the spring of 2023. I went back and forth between the Tiger 900, the KTMs and the Yamaha Tenere 700. In the end I made my decision based on the two most important factors to me: Reliability and large dealer network/parts availability. I bought a 2023 Tenere 700. I can understand why you went with the KTM. When running properly it is unmatched.
Good luck with that bike. You are going to need it. If you were touring on a 450 it seems like a big jump to the 890. IMO anything bigger than a KTM 690 or DR 650 is too big for any serious dirt riding.
Great mentality. You are a great Rider. stick to it if you can. It was unfortunate that you received a problematic motorcycle. I am a KTM owner as well and my bike is bullet proof.
Over the years I've followed the repairs of all bikes and KTM was way up there with problems. I'm on my 2nd Yamaha Ten. Never been let down . Good luck with your new bike.
Thanks for the honest review. I agree with you, make sure you have a good local dealer with these modern complex electronic bikes. I went for the Ducati Desert X and zero problems with it. I've put some parts on it, all super easy. I did own a KTM 690 Duke and it was also no problems, but a simpler bike than yours. Good luck and have fun!
Yeah I've just done the same thing here in Australia. Bought a new 2022 KTM 890 Adventure R (see my review on my channel). After 3 years on the T7 sold it for the KTM. Did my research and knew most of the issues these bikes have, and still have. One of the main issue being the cam shaft. My bike with only 250ks on the clock decided to run on one cyclinder. The bike when running is a great bike so much than my T7, but zero issues with the T7. It is really poor that KTM has not yet sorted these issues and for the money we pay it's not good enough for a modern bike. I will most likley sell mine after 12 months I just don't have the confidence in reliability. Anyway all the best with your bike.
Honest review. Very saddening to hear your experience-hopefully it has sorted itself out by now - or you let it go. 'm going to pull the trigger on one soon! Wish me luck-sounds like I'm going to need it:)
Hello Todd, Good honest review, I like it. For whatever it’s worth, the place that installed your Tech Pack has an amazing master tech. We met that day. If you can’t get it sorted on your side of the hill they might be able to help. 790 guy
My 22 ktm 500 is endless fun, and now that you have an 890, you already appreciate their engineer's capacity to make bikes fun, it keeps surprising me. Like you, even with a $600 seat upgrade on my 500, it can be tough on longer road stretches. In the end, it's how much dirt vs how much pavement, bottom line. Since I'm in the dirt a lot, the 500 can't be beat, it's near perfect for my skill level. My buddy who's ridden his whole life is dumping his T7 and ktm 350 for a 500 after riding mine while we're out. He does long stretches including the continental divide. But, neither of us are looking to do hardcore pavement pounding. I hope in the end the 890 issues are worked out and you can bring some new content for us in your new riding style. Thanks for all the great videos so far.
John, that's terrible! Electronics problems are the not good and hard to fix. I have been looking at the Norden they probably will have the same problems I would suspect, maybe I go back wanting an Africa Twin I do like it also. Good luck I hope you can get it all fixed!
I'm looking forward to the rest of your experiences on this bike. My 890R did the same thing last year a couple times, once in the woods and wouldn't start. It was a fantastic ride, but I got rid of it because of that.
@@JohnTYoung same here. I’d love to buy a Norden Expedition but I keep having flashbacks. I’ll be watching your experiences. I got a 450RL and you were a large reason, hope you get this sorted out.
Sorry to learn of your issues! Maybe this is one reason why it takes Honda for forever to deliver a new motorcycle model with all gadgets and gizmos. A maturity concern. I got my 2023 890 Adventure standard late April and have now done >5.700 kilometers. I bought it because of >55.000 almost faultless kilometers on a 2019 1290 Super Adventure. Only problem I had with it was after a battery replacement. That issue was solved by reconnecting the battery. This time around, wanted something lighter, and was not done with KTM. And the 2023 890 just looked the par, besides all the rest. I've had one issue with the 890 this far. The cruise control went dead right after a wash. Twice. It comes back when it dries up. New clutch cluster will be replaced under warranty. It seems the factory is aware of this so if anyone else gets the same issue with the CC, well you know. I hope things will be fixed and you can begin to enjoy it! Just hit me, I've been told there is a reboot sequence in the bikes. So if one gets stuck, disconnecting the battery for 20secs or so, then reconnect will initiate a boot sequence with additional trouble shooting. Oh I should add, I've had much more issues with new beemers than with my two KTMs. Just sayin' :)
John, I followed your previous travels with enthusiasm and enjoyed all your cinematography & travels throughout previous trips. Sorry to hear you're having that problem with 890 I thought about purchasing an 890 R myself, but I've heard of these problems and that is what has made me reluctant. I do love the reliability of my T7, when I turn that key it always starts & it always sounds phenomenal!
I am sorry for your plight and appreciate your videos. I was going to buy an 890 today, but after watching your video I changed my plans. At 66 years old I feel that life is too short to spend it broken down in a hard to get to place, or at a dealership service shop. I have a 2014 KTM 500 XC-W with no kickstand switch, an ignition switch that can be bypasses, but always works, a kick starter plus battery. It sucks that KTM has to make the 890 with so many points of failure. They need to learn the basic KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. Thank you for saving my time and frustrations.
Planning to buy this bike. Exactly why i want it is because of the things you mentioned like suspension, weight, offroad capability, etc. But i wont if it has "unsolvable" issues. Hope everything settles down and you can get on riding.
I always love your videos and was curious about that orange thing I've seen you on. I'm still growing into my 450L but I think a next step for me is the T7.
Thanks for the video, Today i start getting "Invalid ignition key", for both keys, im wondering if its the same problem with deferent message which depends on the version of the tft.
@JohnTYoung Really? I tried both keys, charged the battery, connected cables to a cars battery. Nothing worked. I took it to the KTM dealer, and the mechanic connected it to the computer and couldn't reset it. Now, they are going to change the entire lock under warranty. 🤷🏽♂️
I’ve got a 2020 790 with 30,000 mi only a few issues, shock seal, leak at water pump, two recalls dealing with brakes, she’s a three start bike but after the third crank it’s on. Love this bike
I have a '23 890 Adventure (non-R) I purchased with all of the Rally Pack included - forget the demo mode. At its 600 mile dealer service, the KTM dealer her in Virginia told me that there were two different motor electronics software upgrades that they performed on May 25, 2023. The quickshifter seemed to work better (a bit smoother) afterward. So after 2200 miles now, I have had Zero Problems.
Interesting to hear your review! I am interested in the 901 Expedition. My friend just bought a 2023 Adventure R my cousin has a 2022 Adventure R I have a 2021 T7 with 25,000 miles on it and absolutely no issues whatsoever! I have ridden the TAT, some of the continental divide trail, the Alpine loop and other trails in CO, Moab’s Hells revenge & Slickrock. ETC I have a full exhaust system and a ECU reflash, and one tooth larger in the rear. I drag raced my cousin’s 2022 adventure r. The T7 has a very low first gear, so I took off in 2nd gear. My front tire was 3 feet in front of his until 77 mph, then he started to pull away from me. I love the torque curve of the T7. No matter the RPM’s when you crack the throttle you have power on tap. I can takeoff in 3rd gear and wind it out to 75 mph in 3rd. It doesn’t wheelie as easily as the 890 but I have popped it up in 3rd shifted to 4th and ridden a wheelie out to 82 mph. I have purchased some heavier, progressive springs front and rear and look forward to installing them. I’m 168 lbs, 53 yrs old I have heard that the T7 flat trackers are tuned to get 90 hp!! I love the T7 and probably will not sell it but I am interested in a 901 Expedition. I hope it doesn’t have too many issues. I have not read all the comments so you may have already answered this question but “can you get the bike started with the key issue?” If so how? Thanks, Jason
I hope things work out and you get the bike sorted John. I've had a '21 and now a '23 and they've both been great. A buddy has a '21 that has been a source of grief for him - little niggles to be sure, but still super annoying, so quality control seems a bit hit and miss for sure. I think once you and your dealer get through the teething pains, you should be golden! The ride is definitely worth it, mine puts a big silly grin on my face every time I ride it!
When it comes to bikes like this (heavy but long distance) buy the African Twin period. I've said this a billion times, always buy Japanese because they run forever and I do the same with their cars. I used to sell Aprillia, BMW and Ducati, those bikes were always in the shop for issues.
@John T. Young My riding buddy so badly wanted the Honda 450RL, he had 4 deposits at different dealers and 8 months later he gave in and bought the 690, extremely tall bike he's 5'11 and tip toes rocking back and fourth just getting one toe to the ground. His first week the engine started leaking oil, gets that fixed, then his electrical starts going bonkers, gets that fixed and now he's battling ecu issues. He should have waited just a few more weeks
You always strike me as a very patient guy, John, I feel for you. The scene in the video where the KTM is in the workshop it looks like a Harley mechanic - that must be a recipe for disaster! I'm sticking to my analog bike, as soon as there's a Canbus the problems seem to pile up...... Stay safe🕊
I didn't have to take your advice because I had already done it! Bought a '22 890 ADV July of 2022. I didn't have nearly as many electrical issues as you do but I couldn't get around the bike either not starting or only starting on 1 cylinder multiple times until I'd blip the throttle. And it didn't matter if the outside temp was cold or not. The bike didn't even have 200 miles on it. Butted heads for over 2 months between the dealer and KTM. They finally bought it back. I found a different dealer selling another '22 890 ADV and bought it in October of 2022. It's got over 2,000 miles now and starts on 2 cylinders every time! It really depends on the manufacture date with KTMs. Their quality control sucks and it shows but it really is the best fun midweight ADV bike out there!
Thanks for this review. I just sold my R1200GS. On the fence about selling my Africa Twin because I want a bike that weighs a lot less. Found a low mileage 790 R for under 10 grand but the KTM quality reliability issues have me hesitating. I own a 500 XCFW that has been OK but the bigger bikes don't seem to be set and forget. Pretty much hoping for a unicorn still. Thanks again.
I want to trade my Africa Twin for an 890 so badly but your experience is what I fear the most. I ride solo and frequently end up a long way from anybody, including cell service. I can't worry about the bike not starting/running when I hit the button. I know a LOT of people have zero issues with KTM ADV bikes but more than a few do. My dirt bike is a KTM 500EXC and been flawless but.... So for the time being, my AT will have to suffice but man do those 890s look about perfect for my style of riding.... Great content John, I appreciate you.
Firstly, it's great you're back! I've been slowly building an adventurised (I know, not a word) Husky FE501, primarily inspired by your 450L and half way through the project, I started lusting after the 890R due to the pain in the arse trying to get bits shipped from around the world for the 501. I'm so glad you bit the bullet 'cause for now, I'll stick with the project as I can't get past the idea of being stuck in the middle of the Australian desert with a bike telling me to shove it (due to some kind of sensor failure). I'm at an age where I'd probably Sat-phone in some help, get helicoptered out while looking down to watch the brand new $27,000 bike I just set on fire out of spite!
I watched the guys at MAD do an Australian desert crossing without even a hiccup. They sure didn't cook lunch over the burning dead carcass of their KTMs.
@@JohnTYoung Yeah, they did a great job. Though I suspect that I wouldn't have access to the dealer, factory and multi-sponsor support they receive if I got in the stinker. After all, who the hell is Jonny?? (my real name btw). MAD is good, but not every bike can be the best ever if you know what I mean... :))
I love your channel because The 450rl set up like yours was was going to be my unicorn bike, that or the 890 adventure. Now, I get to watch you experience both. I will benefit from your troubles. You make great videos. Please, keep it up.
I would bet the key issue is either a weak battery, or a bad connection somewhere. My 2013 tiger 800 had that issue for awhile... in the beginning I thought it was the RFID keyfob for my office that was interfering, as sometimes separating them for a bit before trying to start the bike would let it start normally. After being stranded one day, i went to disconnect the battery, only to find the negative terminal was loose and there was enough resistance in the weeks prior to heat up and melt the terminal. Once that was fixed the problem never came back, and my work keys didn't interfere with the triumph key. It might not be your battery negative, but maybe a bad ground elsewhere?
unbelievably happy 2019 ktm 500 owner - obviously not the same type of bike but all things considered, i would say go there but it is too late clearly - good luck and love from england
The 23' Adventure R is now produced in China by CF Moto, the base model( not actually called "S") is still produced in Austria. Not sure if its related, but I'm really leaning towards the base model.
Have u tried to turn the handlebar to the left? on my 2023 was broken cable that works while handlebar is on left side. ne cable from ktm solved the problem with the immobilizer
John, I usually end up buying something after watching your videos. Thank goodness that is not the case this time! Sure has my wheels turning though! Thanks for the upload, looking forward to more.
Immobilizer Antena. Maybe try a new battery? Stock one could be funky
Already done and it worked. Thanks !

Instal a lithium ion battery and that issue will go

Seriously!
Thanks bacbladerunner !
My friend had a 690 and the hydraulic clutch failed and he had to get it towed. It was only a year old
@@JohnTYoung I’m rooting for you and the bike.

Thank you Frank.
No no no no no. The problems make it NO LONGER a fantastic machine.

@@philg666v my dealer is useless. They reset an engine fault light and called it good.
I was going to get a ktm 890, but i stopped at a yamaha dealership first. Seen the T7 in all her glory in my favorite color and decided right then and there that i had to have her. Had my t7 for about a month and i am absolutely in love with it.
Nice call
This sounds EXACTLY like my experience with the 790R - that's why I got rid of it.
I had about a dozen 1 hour ( 1 way) trips to the dealership and fiiiinally gave up on it. I always said "When it's running, nothing runs better.". But, it rarely ran because it was always at the dealership. So, I sold it.
Sad to hear that they're still persnickety. Do better KTM!!!!
Thanks Sumo
I bought a 450RL partly because of your videos but I went the T7 route for the second stable mate. I don’t plan to push the T7 as hard as some do, I guess. No jumps or fast single track is in the plans for it, just forest roads, mnt passes and highways. It handles the baby heads and ledges really well in stock suspension form and I don’t ever worry about its reliability. The ‘Whew!’ at the end of the video when it started was classic.
I’ve worked out a way to turn on the key with my fingers crossed.
Hey John. Sorry to hear your troubles with your KTM. Hopefully you can get things sorted out and can enjoy it. Really appreciate your effort in making the 450L videos. Been some good info.
Thanks Matt
We appreciate you taking one for the team, I really want a 890r but I am skeptical, not wanting to be stranded 4 hours from a dealership. I f they were mechanical gremlins like the rear shock deal they had a while back, that I can fix but all the electrical issues I would be helpless without the software etc. I kept my Rl for short trips and took the Tenere pill for longer trips and after a few dollars and getting a feel for the altered weight load, single track isn’t bad. I look forward to future updates and videos
Thanks Robbie. The Team can pay me back when I’m stranded 4 hours from a dealer. LOL.
Yippee, here we go with all new adventures on a whole new bike!! Honda should pay you handsomely for showing how great the 450L model is... and now KTM will likely get some great publicity! Ride safe, thanks for your content!
Not sure about KTM's "great" publicity, but THANK YOU!
I like your attitude Michael.
That's wonderful you're still out there crushing it no matter what you're on.
Thanks mate!
Not sure I'd call it "crushing it" but yeah, I'd prefer to go out with a bang and not a whimper... @@JohnTYoung
I have 2023 850GSA and totally agree with you. Longer warranty, and there are two BMW dealers within 10 miles of home. Reliability is THE criteria for an adventure bike. All the performance stuff doesn't even come close as a criteria. After all, people have toured the world on CT90s.
I bought new Aprilia Tuareg. Its super fun. Very good suspension. Very low weight. Full of electronis. All work fantastic...
Don't rub it in!
Yes if only it could also look better it would be almost perfect 😁

I was debating between the Africa Twin and 890 Adventure R. I had a Husqvarna 701 Enduro for 2 years and 22,000 Kms with absolutely 0 issues so I must have gotten lucky. I went with the Africa Twin since I was sure my luck would run out, lol. I think the 890 is perfect for your type of riding. The KTM traction control and off-road ABS are unbeatable and all other companies are years behind.
And that’s how I ended up here.
Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Better than the AT by all measures, and more comfortable for long-distance riding than the 890.
@@spikejnz ahahaha tiger better than AT, bitch please, i wasn't even considering anything from triumph. European reliability, and japanese lack of character.

I haven't had a single problem, not one 😂
All true
You'll love it, when it runs. Ready to Repair!
So so true
Great review, I like how you are being honest about what's so great about the bike and what's not so great. Best comparison ever to that X we all wished we had. I just purchased an 890 Adventure and have yet to ride it and hopefully it'll be solid.

I’m currently riding a DR650.. my next bike was planned to be a Yamaha T7 . But after drooling over the specs and some of the reviews of this new 23 ktm 890, I was starting to consider it over the T7 . Thr biggest draw to the T7 was reliably.

Bizarre. If you've been hating for a long time, why are you still here? Doesn't add.
It was fun watching your new video, John. I love your upfront and honest reviews about stuff. Glad you will be making more video's of your adventures to come.
There may be more swearing than in past videos... you've been warned.

Damn!
DRZ400, CRF300, lots of good motos out there.
Great video and I'm currently looking at the 890 adv r or norden 901 expedition. Btw what mosko moto tank bag are you using on your 890?? Thanks
Its the Nomax. I like it
What was the solution to the immobilizer issue? It seems like a lot of them are fixe by changing the battery out (because the old battery was toast) or because of some wires broken...curious what happened with yours?
I changed the battery out. 👀
Thanks for the info! I want one of these bikes but will stick with my flaw free Africa Twin until KTM can make a reliable version.
Don’t hold your breath
Great and honest review! What exactly was the problem with the side stand? Would replacing the side stand sensor solve the problem?
The side stand sensor is the problem....
I couldn't stop laughing at your analogy with the chick you use to date. Wonderful review Thank you. I'm really sorry you're having a hard time with this particular bike. Hope the dealers give you some kind of compensation for your troubles. Good luck and hope to see more content like this from you soon.
See, you know what I’m talking about.
Thanks for bringing us along on this journey. You are taking a significant risk not demanding a swap out for a different Adventure R. Personally, the Norden Expedition has my eye, but I can wait on the feedback on it. Godspeed! I hope you are "over the hump" on the number and variety of issues.
Oh God I hope so too. Thanks

Hi John how’s the 890r coming along? Thinking of getting one
Still dealing with the coolant leak and the front tire slow leaks.
Video update coming as soon as I can get my dang computer working better.
It is a fun bike. Mines been better since the battery switch
Hey ; hope you get it straight soon! Looks like you are enjoying it ! Thanks for the video
I am enjoying it when I am enjoying it. LOL.
Sooooooo much fun
Good luck with that bike. You are going to need it. If you were touring on a 450 it seems like a big jump to the 890. IMO anything bigger than a KTM 690 or DR 650 is too big for any serious dirt riding.
I plan to find out. The hard way it seems
Great mentality. You are a great Rider. stick to it if you can. It was unfortunate that you received a problematic motorcycle. I am a KTM owner as well and my bike is bullet proof.
Thanks! It’s getting better.
@@JohnTYoung I wish you well my friend. And I am subscribing your channel. You comments are fair and I reckon you are a fair man.
Over the years I've followed the repairs of all bikes and KTM was way up there with problems.
I'm on my 2nd Yamaha Ten.
Never been let down .
Good luck with your new bike.
Thanks Spartan
Thanks for the honest review. I agree with you, make sure you have a good local dealer with these modern complex electronic bikes. I went for the Ducati Desert X and zero problems with it. I've put some parts on it, all super easy. I did own a KTM 690 Duke and it was also no problems, but a simpler bike than yours. Good luck and have fun!
Fingers crossed!
I'm going to head on over to your channel as soon as I get some more coffee. Thanks for stopping by.
Back to the T7?
Honest review. Very saddening to hear your experience-hopefully it has sorted itself out by now - or you let it go. 'm going to pull the trigger on one soon! Wish me luck-sounds like I'm going to need it:)
Good luck!🍀
Hello Todd,
Good honest review, I like it. For whatever it’s worth, the place that installed your Tech Pack has an amazing master tech. We met that day. If you can’t get it sorted on your side of the hill they might be able to help.
790 guy
They did seem to know what was up. Had I known I would have bought the bike from them originally. Live and learn.
Thank you and keep crushing it on that 500!
John, that's terrible! Electronics problems are the not good and hard to fix. I have been looking at the Norden they probably will have the same problems I would suspect, maybe I go back wanting an Africa Twin I do like it also. Good luck I hope you can get it all fixed!
I’m think the Nordens are way more reliable.
I'm looking forward to the rest of your experiences on this bike. My 890R did the same thing last year a couple times, once in the woods and wouldn't start. It was a fantastic ride, but I got rid of it because of that.
Fingers crossed
Thanks Knut
John, I followed your previous travels with enthusiasm and enjoyed all your cinematography & travels throughout previous trips. Sorry to hear you're having that problem with 890 I thought about purchasing an 890 R myself, but I've heard of these problems and that is what has made me reluctant. I do love the reliability of my T7, when I turn that key it always starts & it always sounds phenomenal!
I do love the T7 growl.
I hear the Desert X is pretty reliable....
Planning to buy this bike. Exactly why i want it is because of the things you mentioned like suspension, weight, offroad capability, etc. But i wont if it has "unsolvable" issues. Hope everything settles down and you can get on riding.
I'm working on it
I always love your videos and was curious about that orange thing I've seen you on. I'm still growing into my 450L but I think a next step for me is the T7.
Now you know Stephanie. I just wanted faster with cruise control but still ridable in the dirt.
Sorry to hear about the problems you’re having. I have the same bike and love it. No problems at all. Only complaint is the windscreen buffeting.
I settle for that. Thanks Shad
Good luck John. Appreciate the honesty and I hope things work out for you and the new bike. Looking forward to watching your adventures!
They're coming! Thanks
Thanks for the video,
Today i start getting "Invalid ignition key", for both keys, im wondering if its the same problem with deferent message which depends on the version of the tft.
Yup, I just got that a few weeks ago. It's just never ending...
@JohnTYoung Really? I tried both keys, charged the battery, connected cables to a cars battery. Nothing worked. I took it to the KTM dealer, and the mechanic connected it to the computer and couldn't reset it.
Now, they are going to change the entire lock under warranty. 🤷🏽♂️
@@itaydor I had to try 3 times, but it worked. Good thing too as mine's out of warranty and most KTM dealers suck.
I’ve got a 2020 790 with 30,000 mi only a few issues, shock seal, leak at water pump, two recalls dealing with brakes, she’s a three start bike but after the third crank it’s on. Love this bike
I'm glad I'm not the only one forever pushing the start button
I have a '23 890 Adventure (non-R) I purchased with all of the Rally Pack included - forget the demo mode. At its 600 mile dealer service, the KTM dealer her in Virginia told me that there were two different motor electronics software upgrades that they performed on May 25, 2023. The quickshifter seemed to work better (a bit smoother) afterward. So after 2200 miles now, I have had Zero Problems.
Nice. Maybe I'll beg them to check again for an update.
That sucks - such a good bike that has so many little issues that make it so you dont trust it - hope you get it all taken care of man!
I got some issues fixed, some not.
that sucks - I ended up just buying a 2007 KTM 950 Super Enduro R. It’s an absolute BEAST of a dirt bike which is exactly what I was looking for!
Interesting to hear your review! I am interested in the 901 Expedition.
My friend just bought a 2023 Adventure R my cousin has a 2022 Adventure R
I have a 2021 T7 with 25,000 miles on it and absolutely no issues whatsoever!
I have ridden the TAT, some of the continental divide trail, the Alpine loop and other trails in CO, Moab’s Hells revenge & Slickrock. ETC
I have a full exhaust system and a ECU reflash, and one tooth larger in the rear.
I’m 168 lbs, 53 yrs old
I have heard that the T7 flat trackers are tuned to get 90 hp!!
I love the T7 and probably will not sell it but I am interested in a 901 Expedition.
I hope it doesn’t have too many issues.
I have not read all the comments so you may have already answered this question but
“can you get the bike started with the key issue?”
If so how?
Thanks,
Jason
You can not start it if the immobilizer is activated. It’s an anti theft device.
I am keeping my fingers crossed
I'll have to watch again but I'm sure you only got the immobiliser fault when your bars were straight? Thanks for the video bud.
Hmmm, I don't recall, but I haven't had the fault for a bit
It's the power, and handling. I also had coolant leak that I'm currently monitoring but I still love the bike .
Mine's got a slow drip too.
Man, you’re awesome! I respect the honesty, hope everything works out for you!
Thanks AB!
When it comes to bikes like this (heavy but long distance) buy the African Twin period. I've said this a billion times, always buy Japanese because they run forever and I do the same with their cars. I used to sell Aprillia, BMW and Ducati, those bikes were always in the shop for issues.
I so wanted a 450lb (or less!) Africa Twin but I couldn't find one anywhere.
Didn't you watch the whole video?! The sex is amazing with the 890!

Stay safe🕊
They service KTM and Harley so you know they turn wrenches a lot
Great video - tell it like it is good and bad. Good luck and hope the bugs are fully sorted before the warranty is up.
I'm going to put stupid miles on this bike to make sure it's sorted.
I like a happy ending...
After owning (2) 1290 SA , a 690 Enduro , many 250s and 300s , I just recently built a 800 DE and it feels great to be back on one of the Big Fours
John, sorry if someone asked.....did you ever consider the Husky Norden 901?
I had not. Not really. I should have.
No problem KB
I want to trade my Africa Twin for an 890 so badly but your experience is what I fear the most. I ride solo and frequently end up a long way from anybody, including cell service. I can't worry about the bike not starting/running when I hit the button. I know a LOT of people have zero issues with KTM ADV bikes but more than a few do. My dirt bike is a KTM 500EXC and been flawless but.... So for the time being, my AT will have to suffice but man do those 890s look about perfect for my style of riding.... Great content John, I appreciate you.
Thanks David. When I get it sorted I'll let you know how I did it and we can all rip on an 890.
Thanks for sharing your ownership experience. Hoping you're able to resolve all of those electronic gremlins...
I am working on it. THanks
LOL. Anything for you Chad. Lemme know when you’re thinking about a Desert X.
I really am sorry for all your troubles though. I do hope it gets better. And of course, a desert x would be lovely, but I wouldn't want to impose.
I’m 99% sure it IS the battery. New video to follow….
Thanks Travis.
unbelievably happy 2019 ktm 500 owner - obviously not the same type of bike but all things considered, i would say go there but it is too late clearly - good luck and love from england

The 23' Adventure R is now produced in China by CF Moto, the base model( not actually called "S") is still produced in Austria. Not sure if its related, but I'm really leaning towards the base model.
I cant blame you
Have u tried to turn the handlebar to the left? on my 2023 was broken cable that works while handlebar is on left side. ne cable from ktm solved the problem with the immobilizer
Not on purpose.
