Considering your closing words about something in between i absolutely understand. It makes sense. I think u be good on regular AT dct like one i have. Or not. Maybe tuareg. I don't think there is anything in between
As far as "incomplete" goes KTM is all about minimalist and efficiency. Weight savings is huge for them and anytime they can combine things or eliminate things even as small as using the least amount of mounting bolts they do. That's why their off road bikes are consistently lighter than the competition, sometimes by a lot. For instance the mounts that look unfinished by the screen are strong because of the multiple ribs but don't need a cover to add extra weight. Other manufactures would probably use aluminum or a hollow molded part that was not as strong but looks more finished and possibly heavier. Any time the KTM engineers can cut weight and keep things functional they will. KTM is cutting edge when it comes to small details for weight savings. I think Honda is likely more focused on styling and fit and finish is more important than minimalism and weight savings. Excellent review.
ktm forgot to tighten half of the bolts making the bike even lighter as the parts are falling offf lol My 890 runs like a rocket and absolutely can go almost anywhere my wr450 can go but I must criticize the build quality it’s surprisingly low for the price I paid
Did the same had an Africa Twin AS 2022, just hated that monster bike, then got this 890, oh man oh man, I cannot described this bike, it's like heaven, call it unreliable, incomplete, ugly, this is by far the most awesome ride I've owned! there is nothing like it!
Dude, I really like the flow in this review. I think I've watched hundreds reviews by now and this one really pops out. Kept me watching all the way. Thanks for the info!
Regarding reliability: pretty much everyone who opened valve cover on advrider forum after 10k km or more had smoked camshafts. So yeah dont compare lil AT issues with ktm issues. They or another planet in terms of dependability. The only thing i worry about when i go ride my AT is where ill go. When u own ktm everytime you hope it'll start, and engine wont explode. Maybe im exageratting a lil, maybe not. Had 950adv for 2 years and was mostly ok. But for 10 years I wouldn't keep it. Way too much stress. 790 I wouldn't want for free
And what the point of having adv bike that you are afraid to take far from home? 😂 Like mf, that's the whole point of adv bike. Unreliable adv bike is like dirt bike that can't be ridden off-road, defeat whole purpose.
I’ve had the KTM790 adventure since 2019. It has all the tech features available. Im up to 16,000 trouble free miles right now. The standard model can do just about everything you’d want to do on a 478 pound bike (Mine on the scale with gas). If I want to play Chris Birch I use my KTM690 or 350. I will probably get a new updated model with the nicer front end look.
4:45 This is interesting. I've had an 890 for a big 1500 mile trip with 3000 miles on it at the start, same standard non R model with all the goodies. Now I have an Africa Twin 1100 Adventure Sports long termer that was delivered to me with 360 miles on the clock. The AT has loose throttle buttons, crappy windscreen adjustment that rattles and never seems to want to click in place, a seat that never quite feels locked in place and mirrors that are slightly loose at the ball joint. The KTM I had, yes lot of plastic, and "unfinished parts" but it was solid. No rattles, everything that needs to be tight was tight. Virtually 0 lever wobble, nice solid handguards (for plastic), stable windscreen, it was just a lot "tighter" than the AT, and that's before all the handling and power benefits. The KTM tail straight up looks sexy, something straight out of the 690 enduro, or similar, I really like the reworked front end too, the ball sacs for tanks take getting used to but aren't that bad. The AT is a sexy bike, but the KTM is a cool bike.
We’re all looking for the Unicorn and thinking that the grass is greener. All bikes are compromises and all you can do is pick the compromise that beat suits your needs and wants. Sure the Tuareg is better off road but it’s less torquey on road. The Africa Twin is better on road but worse off. You pays your money, you takes your choice. I say to my friends that I want a BMW 1250 RT that changes to a KTM 350 EXCF at the flick of a switch. Until then, the 890 is the best compromise I’ve found.
Hi Nice review, I’m I having the 2021 890-Adventure-R and I have a little comment about the plastics on the bike, that you do not like for a premium bike. The reason for that is quite simple, first of all the weight, it is Mitch lighter as metal, even aluminium would have more weight, because if you having bigger surface area, the aluminium has to be reinforced (on the back) to absorb greater forces it the bikes falls in a crash or tip over. 2e If you would use metal it would dent or have scratches in such event. 3e The cost of replacing metal painted, in different colours with shiny finish, of the body parts would be much higher. I know because I had to replace some of them after a minor crash. The other remark, “sitting on top of the bike” has to do with performance by keeping the COG low. Most of the competing bikes in the Adventure market do’t do that correctly and that is mostly the first complain from riders of BMW GS’s / Africa-Twin”s / Yamaha T7’s / etc, The Center of Gravity is because of metal fuel tanks, metal body parts, (and because of that the need for metal protection bars), is too high, and that makes the bike more difficult to ride. That is the reason in my opinion that KTM did it different. On the other hand there are no concessions on the frame and suspension this is all very sturdy and rigid. This bike is a functional driven design and that makes it so unique.
Enjoyed your review. I bought the same bike a few months ago and have put 1,600 miles on it since then. Like you, my primary reason for buying the bike is the low end weight and resulting flickabiity and stability. Much superior to the 2019 Africa Twin Adventure Sports that I've ridden many times. I'm mostly an on road rider, but have taken it on fire roads a few times and found it to be the most secure and confidence inspiring adventure bike I've ridden. You're right about the stock screen being inadequate; I also added a mini screen to the top and that cured the buffeting. As for your two negatives about the bike, i.e. plastics/cheap and sitting on top, those characteristics never entered my mind until you mentioned them. I suppose there is a lot of plastic but that's the price for relatively low weight. As for sitting on top of rather than in the bike, I don't notice anything negative about the seating position and do appreciate the greater resulting leg room (which also results from putting the seat in the high position). So far no problems at all with reliability and I love the bike. Haven't taken on any long rides yet, but will be doing so this summer and will experience how it functions as a touring machine. Light weight no doubt will be a problem in strong cross winds, but the low center of gravity should help counter that.
Easily the best mid size adv bike for off road, and that’s what it feels like, a big dual sport. But I like to travel a bit on my bikes, this was just to much of a sacrifice. But again, dang amazing off road!
@@adventureundone for both of you, speaking about low center of gravity... This bike might do the trick when compared to bikes like ATwin or T7, but you won't know what low center of gravity really means until you test ride the Tuareg 660. By far the best chassis, lowest weight distribution (almost as good as my GS), lightest and easiest adv bike out there. And that's incredible for a bike with 240mm of suspension travel... And, when it comes to suspension, it's got the best combination of comfort and supportive feeling in any stock suspension I've tested. Moreover, it's got sharp brakes and an extremely clever and intuitive electronic package. Last but not least, its smooth but powerful engine sounds a-m-a-zing!
Wound up taking several shorter rides this summer of three hundred or so miles per day, and the bike works well, especially on back roads. Bike is decent on the highway, just not as good as a bigger heavier bike due to crosswinds having a greater negative effect on the bike. Stock seat is on the firm side but still supportive, and it's easy to take a break by riding standing up, especially as compared to non ADV bikes (such as the FJR1300 I previously owned). Stock windscreen doesn't block enough wind and even with the screen extender I installed, bike can be tiring on longer high speed rides. Power and weight of the bike result in very good acceleration. Handling is also very good, although it takes time to get used to the 21" front wheel on back roads. Overall I give this bike a 9 out of 10 and am very pleased with it.
My first KTM street/adventure bike but I've had a lot of RACE KTM dirt bikes. Reliability is fine if you just watch your maintenance like any other bike. No problems out of mine and I have over 15K miles on mine and love it.
I love the way you speak - a real Yank! For me, KTMs are all about function over form. They've done a great job making the bike feel light, and I agree with you completely about it not feeling premium, but it's a price I'm happy to pay.
Adventure bikes in the early days was designed for asphalt riders to get their feet dirty. The 890, even the lesser one you have, was made for off-road riders to gets some asphalt time. All that plastic is normal for dirt bikes so it wasn’t weird for us. As far as tires, it doesn’t make any difference. During a BDR, I was stuck with a streeter replacement. I still smoked the other adventure bikes cuz this is the first bike where traction control feels seamless and natural. This is a serious off-road machine. You ride on it, not in it. I installed ‘HighwayDirtBike’ handguards w/ flip out mirrors, left hand rear brake and Rekluse clutch on my ‘21 Adventure R. The right tool for the right job. That’s why I have a KTM 500 EXC for that job, and a CRF 300 Rally as my ‘third world’ country bike. On one BDR, a guy had a brand new Triumph Scrambler held together with baling wire, duct tape and pipe clamps cuz it was the wrong bike for the job. KTM is a serious bike for serious riders.
im glad you like it I sold my Africa twin 2 years ago and got yamaha tenere t700 best bike so far no bs modes simple and mych lest wight the at and it will run forever low compression engine not like ktm runs on 87 octane np not sure about ktm its a race bike 13.1 compression engine and its made in China so no ty Japanese made bikes ftw good luck 😊
Very good review. Thumbs up and subscribed. A critical owner's review is the best. I really don't like a bike review that begins at a dealership with "I'd like to thank _______" for loaning me this bike bla bla bla..." So cheesy.
Interesting take on the plastics. As an off-roader, everyone in my circle always praises the plastics on 790/890s because they're strong dirt bike style plastic instead of the flimsy ABS plastic that's on all the other adv bikes. This means when you drop it multiple times per day, day after day out in the mountains, you likely won't even crack anything. That's one of the reasons why you don't need to bolt on an extra 30lbs of crash bars on these bikes, making them even lighter than the competition. I mention this because I always hated the brittle plastics on my AT and T7 and thought it was a design oversight to use such flimsy parts on such a big heavy bike.
Bret Tkacs has a couple great videos on adjusting the ergonomics of a motorcycle, especially the one for adjusting an ADV bike. His method allows a happy compromise between seated and standing riding positions. I went through this and am glad I did as I found that handle risers are not needed...at least for me. I'm not saying you might not need risers as body dimensions vary from person to person. I also have a 2003 Harley Davidson ultra classic electra glide, which I may feel like I am a part of the bike, but it is not as much fun to flick as my 2022 KTM 890 Adventure. I can easily move about on the seat to vary comfort and for controlling the bike in the twisties. I am a little envious of your 2023 as it has adjustable forks and looks great. I enjoyed your video. I hope you coninue to have fun on your KTM.
i have had 2x ktm for 9 years now, i have had 1 fuse blow on my sxf 450 and that is it, my 500 exc has done 7k miles now in the lest 12mths, no beats missed - ktm are fine - everyone i know rides one, same story over and over and some are 790 R owners, some 500, some 690 - fwiw plastics are light , cheap to replace, crash better and do not dent like metal. KTM are about performance off road so every little thing they do is about that, there are ktm folk and there are others, that is ok.
I have the '23 890 Adventure also. I now have about 2000 miles on it. What an amazing engine - but it is a bit noisy. I recently sold my BMW R1200GS but with that bike the engine made some weird noises and knocking sounds at 1500-2000 RPM - piston slap the Motorrad mechanic said "They all do that". I experiment. With 3000 miles on the ODO, I switched from BMW oil to Amsoil since Amsoil offers both 10W-40 and 15W-50 viscosities (both have MA2 rating for wet clutch). I started with the 10W-40 as this is what BMW oil was. The 10W-40 Amsoil quieted things down maybe by only 10-15%. But it was quieter. After a few weeks, I drained out half of the 10W-40 and replaced it with 15W-50. This mix (12.5W-45 ?) immediately reduced the engine cacophony and the low RPM piston slap to maybe only 40% of what it had with the BMW oil. Again, after a few weeks, I drained all of the oil, changed the filter and filled with Amsoil 15W-50. The engine noise was then almost completely gone! Piston slap too. Amazing. For sure, the engine did not seem as "snappy" (when revving the engine with tranny in neutral) with the thicker oil, but wide open on an open section of interstate was still extremely strong and smooth and quieter. 3x good. I'm going to try the same experiment with my 890. I'll let you know!
@@adventureundone - My 2018 BMW R1200GS with crash bars weighed almost 590 lbs. It was a dream on-road and very impressive trundling down fire roads and across creeks, rocks, etc. off-road when heading straight. But forget quick maneuvers off-road, that's what light dirt bikes are for. However the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure is maybe 130-150 lbs lighter and with the 21" front tire, 18" rear, it is considerably more playful off-road and almost the equal to the R1200GS on-road. At 5'10", 190 lbs (geared up) and wearing an 'adventure' full coverage helmet, seat in Low position, I do feel a more wind buffeting on the 890 at 75MPH than the BMW had, but overall the KTM comfort is still pretty darn impressive. With the seat in Low, and the rear shock preload lessened by 4 turns to change the seat to a level position, I do not feel like I am sitting on top of the KTM, I feel closer to being inside the bike. My 890 does have uncanny stability off-road, crossing creeks and rocks with washouts and gullies on narrow, twisty mountainous fire roads here in SW Virginia - but I do hear a bunch of something rattling around under the fairings or under the seat. I have added sticky foam rubber to cables and connectors that could bounce around - that helps quiet things down. Experimenting with the suspension damping and tweaking F/R tire pressures really pays of to smooth the ride over sharp bumps. The factory setting of the suspension is indeed too harsh, but maybe perfect for a smooth racetrack, but you can tune it for a sweet ride on real roads with bumps and RR tracks.
You can tell this reviewer does not come from a dirt bike background. The things he didn’t like are the very things that make it awesome off highway. Yet, it feels like a sport bike in the twisty. I have a Wing, a Aprilia V4, and a 450 dirt bike. This is in the geometric center of all these motorcycle types. I have an 890 R and an ‘S’ like this. They are awesome bikes. BTW I have had 0 problems with either.
Excellent review, I was kicking around the idea of getting one but i think I'll stay with my AT. I to like the way I sit in the bike not on it. Thanks for the review !
From your conclusion, it feels like you would enjoy either the Yamaha Tenere 7 World Raid or the Norden 901 Expedition with excellent off-road and premium feel
Great review. Same riding style here. I just traded in my dream bike (2022 MT 09 SP) and a '21 KLX 300 for the Husky Norden 901 for the exact reasons you mentioned; the handling. The KLX was terrible at long distance and the MT 09 was terrible off road (😆). I hated riding for an hour and seeing that right turn that I couldn't take on the MT. At 51 years old it's easy to handle offroad and gives me the best of both worlds between the MT and KLX. Only got 300 miles before winter set in but love it so far. One thing I don't like is the cold start issue, which sounds quite common on the 890 engines.
As an enduro rider I ambsolutely love the feeling of riding over my 2023 890, but if that is such a pain point for you, I suggest you try a husky Norden 901 with a custom front deflector, which is way more touring oriented while still preserving great offroad capabilities, or if you don't mind having less power, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 which has great suspensions and a nice sound on stock pipe. The Yamaha t7 is also a good option, but everyone complains the stock suspension sucks...Regarding the light front, you look like a heavy bloke (no offense), and most stock bikes are springed for a 75 kg rider + 75 kg pinion and luggage, so if you are heavier than 90 kg you definitely need the next stiffer springs front and back.
I really appreciate this review and thanks for making me realize that this is the bike I am going to buy next. I love all the pros and cons you've mentioned I can live with or find a work around.
I live in TN too. Thinking of getting this bike once I get more experience off roading on my KLX300. Really want a Tuareg 660 but closest dealership is 3.5 hours away. Tenere I think I could live with but the low center of gravity and cruise control makes me wanna lean towards this bike. I’ve been riding my klx300 to work daily 30 miles round trip. I think I would be fine riding this for commuting / touring
Thanks for your terrific review of a bike I believe I want, and I know what you mean about everything. I have two KTMs - 690R and 350 EXC-F - and a 28-year old GS. The KTMs both sound like a metal lunch box full of rocks. Both are skyscrapers. Shortcomings? Definitely. Fun? Absolutely. Do you get what you pay for? You do, but that's performance, and you also pay for that with things other than money - like petty annoyances, wearing noise on longer rides, stuff like that. Riding the CDT with a pal, he on his Rally Raid farkled Honda CB500X, me on the 690, we both had fan issues. His broke the fan blades off the spindle, and mine I found to be a little loose. The Honda took the better part of an hour of disassembly - including partially removing the radiator - to even access the fan! I took my fan off, added some rubber bushings I dug out of my kit, and put it all back together while he was still struggling with his plastics. I've found the KTMs to be oddly practical in that if they break, and they do, I've been able to fix almost everything trailside, with minimal tools. So, yeah, everything you said. I wonder if you would be happier with the Husqvarna 901. Have you looked at that in comparison?
Very honest interview. I do struggle with this. My solution was to keep the Africa twin for the long trips. And I picked up a T7 Tenere for the rest. Modified it so it’s more comfortable and good windscreen. It has far better wind protection than that Ktm but I wouldn’t want to take it on a multi state trip for example. It’s good for 100 miles either direction and then you go off road and have a blast. It’s probably superior off-road to just about anything, other than a KTMEXC 500 let’s say. So unfortunately, I just think you have to have at least two bikes and maybe three if you really want to cover the single track as well. Good news is there’s a Lotta used bikes out there. Really appreciate your well said honest interview rather than trying to talk yourself into something or trying to talk other people into something you basically just told the truth. And I think the third, no go on your wrapup is that windshield and the lack of weather protection. I’ve heard people like big rock Moto say that just beats him to death on the freeway. Thank you, Gary.
I have a 1290 SAS, and I love sitting a bit tall, great view of surrounding traffic, like a super moto on stilts. Should you have the misfortune to crash, the seating will not make any difference at all. Your worries about finish, to make it light, and its about the lightest in class and also the most powerful in class. you make everything as light as possible while still being strong enough. While I take your point , I would take light over shiny anytime. And I an currently considering a 890, it would be about 40kg lighter, but I think I might miss the 55 less horsepower. Still who really needs a 160 horse power trail bike.
At the end of your very good video you summed up what you are after. You want better refinement, all the bells and whistles plus better road manners, but still very capable offroad. YOU NEED A TRIUMPH TIGER 900 RALLY PRO.
+1 on that comment. KTMs are known to be serious off road bikes. They aren’t great for the on road riding.. But they sure as hell excel in all off road situations.
Very nice review!! I'll keep following 👍. Look into the Aprilia Tuareg 660. I understand it's a great bike. It seems it fits your description. Engine sound, exhaust sound, low fuel weight 🤔
I sold a 2014 BMW 1200GS to buy a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R. Great bike and never had a mechanical issue in 10K miles. Handles great and faster than my GS, but high speed compression damping on the 21 was horrible on sharp edge bumps, wind protection suck, still weighs nearly 500 pounds and pain in the butt to pick up! Ultimately I sold it and bought another BMW GS as I'm 71 and not doing single track, BMW covers miles better, easier to pick up and will do fire roads all day long. So if you're younger and serious about doing a BDR it's a great choice. Just remember it's not a dirt bike at 470 pounds!!!
I wish more reviews were this down to earth. I was sold on a T7 but have 2 KTM dirtbikes that I love to ride. I'm selling a couple other streetbikes to replace with this bike now. Really enjoyed all your comments. I'll have to test ride one first though.
An owners review is much better than a journalist review I enjoyed your video If you are looking for the do it all bike that fits between the Africa Twin & The 890 You should test ride the Tuareg 660 & the Honda Transalp
15:00 then why don't you adjust suspension damping to minimum?? You dont have to follow manual presets, these are just reference point.... Ehh with every review and journalist the same story, nobody adjust suspension its so annoying
I own a 990 SMT, which is an entirely different bike and much older, too, but it also has a low center of mass and the KTM sitting on top of the bike thing. I found that after a year or so, I don't notice it anymore, but what's more important to me is the weight. I have on multiple occasions been able to hold the bike in a precarious situation where I would have dropped my other bike, a Kawasaki Versys. The versys, an old model, theoretically has a lower weight than the KTM (189 dry vs 196 dry), but that weight is much, much higher and most importantly, also feels much higher. And, at the end of the day, that is what matters to me. I really detest bikes that feel heavy.
I've been looking at this bike for months! Unfortunately in this case I live in Medellin Colombia. We haven't gotten the 2023 s yet. But even more important there is a 35% tariff on bikes not made in N America of S America. I Have a Yamaha Bolt 950 here but only good in the city. I love her. But thinking about selling and then picking one of these up after that. Great vid keep up the good work!
I really liked this video, thank you for posting it. I've owned a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure S for 18 months and I also own an Africa Twin Adventure Sport, and I feel the exact same way about them. I'm looking for a bike that sits somewhere in between the "touring" spirit of the AT and the more off-road oriented KTM, but I've had no luck so far. I've seen you have posted some videos about the Tiger 900 Rally too, I think I'll give them a watch.
I sat on the first year KTM 890 Adventure and I’ve been trying to decide if this is the bike for me, coming off 21 years on an Electraglide. I like the low tanks and center of gravity. But your review answered my questions. It’s too off road for me. I’m more of a touring guy. Great review. Thanks.😎
I’ve been on Harleys since the 90’s. I still have my 2017 Ultra Classic and love it. Had a Pan America (unreliable) a 2018 1290 SA-R for a short period and now the 2022 KTM 890 standard model. My 890 is amazing as a sport touring bike. I routinely ride a 1000 mile loop between Humboldt and San Luis Obispo counties in California and I do this year round. If you are taller than 6’ then the 890 might seem small, it is a very compact bike which makes it unbelievable how good this bike is in freeway riding.
@Adventure Undone: Great great real world, and thorough review. Thank you so much for taking the time and doing this. I’m curious because I’m like you, 70/30%…other than the Triumph TT900, were there other bikes your we’re considering?
17:37 This... This is why this bike is amazing, for all skill levels. The 1290 SA is very similar in this regard, I had a moment on an SAS going into deep sand, exactly like that puddle, muddy etc, back end going all over, front wheel basically doing whatever, somehow kept it completely up, probably to do with the geometry and that fuel tank...
Good, thorough, and helpful review. Finding the right bike is a journey. I think you’ll find the standard Africa Twin (not the Adventure Sports model) is a good balance. I’ve owned an ATAS and a standard AT; I prefer the standard AT.
I have the Duke, my first KTM. I’ve heard about the reliability issues. I think it’s just because KTM was one of the first to have all the sensors and computer controls. But I just got an OBD2 reader, and bam, all the mystery is gone. The engine does sound looser, and a higher RPM design, but man does it sound beautiful smooth at 5000 RPM on the highway. The riding on the bike feeling is unusual for me too. But the handling is so sweet in the twisties, sometimes i forget I’m even in them, because I don’t even have to think about how I’m going to take that next curve. Great review by the way. I’m on my way to buy me the 890 Adventure now. 😁
did you get it? I've had mine for 2 years now. I have a '21. It's nearly perfect and I can't find anything more ideal for me as a 150lb rider in all terrains
@@Truemann45 i ended up getting the BMW 850 GS. The KTM dealer didn’t have any 890s in stock, and the BMW dealer was just down the street. Super happy with the BMW.
This is an excellent review I bought the 2022 model and agree with most of what you have said. I think the engine noise may relate to the fuel tanks acting like a speaker box and the exhaust is drowned out by the engine noise. The other thing is the cat being directly under the rear shock producing to much heat, ktm should have supplied a heat shield. But all in all i really enjoy mine especially the sporty side of the bike which surprised me.
im in the market for one 890 adv 2022 that i found destocked and new at my dealer, currently riding a Z1000SX 19, but looking for more of a trail kind of bike. Still debating if its the best choice for me, it looks great and there's features that i love but i'm exclusively a road rider. any input ?
@@MaxB.20 my 22 model was ex demo with only 18 miles on the clock uk dealer. I’m the same road only, but before the ktm I had a Ducati scrambler 1100 for road brilliant on the twisties also bought a royal Enfield scram 411 for a bit of off road. The scram was hard work for me because I’m novice off road and my Ducati I owned for 4 years so I thought i would look around for an all rounder but more road biased and the ktm “s” model ticked all the boxes. As a road bike it’s brilliant, only two things the standard tires Avon are not my choice and wind buffeting is annoying both can be sorted. I’ve taken it off road twice on typical uk green lanes and it even makes me look good and im new at off road, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one again. Hope this helps
Maybe the Factory Racing Pegs would help even more with the riding position compared with the stock ones, as they are lower , wider etc. I guess for maximum highway protection is nothing like a 1250 GS but you'll loose some confidence on smaller trails. Very nice review nonetheless!!
I love your review dude. I love this bike, but I really think I will do 80/20 or less on/off. I am jumping from a cb500x 2015, is not the best on confort but I'm fine with it, I hope to feel no difference onroad confort and have at least as much wind protection as on cb500x
Enjoy your new bike. After riding for a long time I can safely say I dont need this bike or any bike with a dirt focus. I live in the US where roads are paved taken care of and offroad is something you have to decide to go do. Buying anything but a dualsport for that kind of thing isnt for me. However I do have a ktm 500 exc thats perfect for those days. On the road I ride a vstrom 1050XT and I love it
My CFMOTO IBEX 800T seems like right in between... maybe more on the touring side. You definitely sit "in" the bike... I found this video because I'm considering selling the CFMOTO for the KTM... but i'm still not convinced I need to.
i like adventure touring . 6 4 height . have desert sled. tsnk too small. looking at triumph tiger aragon 900, ktm 890 rally, not sure of norden 901 or desert x. thoughts ?
Seriously considering this bike for myself. I like to service and fix everything I can on my own. How hard is it to get those tanks and covers off to work on the engine?
Wow that is one good review you gave there. Came exactly when I needed it. I was very seriously thinking of selling the dream AT I bought last year which I love and get the 890. My only concern was the "tourability" of the KTM. The AT is fantastic. Coming of a Dakar, which is very offroad capable but very sketchy in high winds to an AT that is planted and inspires so much confidence, I'm really missing the offroadiness of the Dakar. You certainly made me think of a few things.
Great review as I just switched from a klr 650 to the ktm adv R, the feul being located at the low end if the bike was a game changer also the suspension was off the charts. Ktm 890 was well worth the extra money.
Great video, really liked your presentation. One quick question: any difficulties in lifting the bike once it's down? And how does it compare to the Africa Twin in that regard? (Guess that's two questions). Thanks.
the low gas tank is game changing on this bike, makes it very very easy to pick up. As for compared to the AT, I think anything will be easier to pick up than that, lol
Decat man just get the cat off and mount an arrow or some other mid pipe, you can buy one with resonating chamber to lower the sound to deep. But it really improves the sound and frees up the engine, with a nice muffler in my mind it’s a must.😊
Has any one of you that already have a KTM 890 driven it with a pillion and the luggage? I need a bike that will be capable of some weekend trips with my better half, but that is also fun to ride and capable of light offroad. Initially, I was thinking of AT, but tubed tires, no ty. Tracer 900 is beautiful to ride on the road, but impossible even on the gravel.
From all I’ve heard from your channel in between the at and the Ktm sounds like a Tuareg 660 that would be great comparison I would love to hear your thoughts
Ktm network is a lot closer to me which leads me more to the Ktm 890 as well. But I still go back and fourth between the two cause it sounds as though the 660 is little more refined on the road!!!
Best review ever I seen about the KTM 890 ADV. I am at the point to buy a new bike but I really do not know what to choose…. I have the same opinion about the plastics, buttons, how it looks, how you sit on it. On my list ist tenere 700 or 890 ADV R and now my big question is.. is it worth the money and which one? 😅… again, awesome video. Thank you
The thing I like best about this bike is exactly what you don't like: the riding position. It looks like a naked, the road can be seen very well and as if you had nothing ahead as happens on other bikes such as the africa twins. I come from the naked world and the thing that made me discard transalp or africa was just because all that plastic in front bothered me; I want to see the road not the bike.
Great video!! Thanks 😊 I’m almost in the same situation as you.. I have a 2017 Africa Twin DCT which I love also my dream bike. But now I want something more lighter but not reduced HP’s etc, so looking at the KTM890 or the Husqvarna 901 Norden expedition. But the KTM looks great 👍🏻 Difficult decisions 😂
A couple of months ago I sold my BMW 850GS ADV and IM very interested in ATAS DCT ES version or KTM 1290 SAR; These two bikes have been on my sight since that...But for me is already more complicated; I have tried out these two for over 200 km to decide which one is the best for me and Im actually very divided. In one hand I have the guarantee of Honda ATAS DCT ("Honda is honda" said the experts on my socials), the only technical issue I've heard from this bike it the gear selector (only one case I've noticed), the rest of people I've talked about the bike are excited with it. In the other hand, I like the 1290R as well, but I heard A LOT of people arguing of the electronic problems KTM have (some people close to me, a lot of mentions on the net, forums...) I tried a demo bike from my local dealer and the electronic suspension did an error on the same proof, so I've lost the hype for this bike a little bit (but still on my sight). I've traveled a lot in my bike, some off, some on-road (50/50), but the KTM community is amazing (events, logs, etc) compared to Honda. And I don't want to anticipate my selection for loosing some of those things... Is KTM profitable nowadays or only a product which needs to be tested for a couple of years more? What do you think? Love your videos and how the quality of your content have beeen increasing from the begining to here! Congrats and see you on the dust!
@@adventureundone 50/50 I could say, why dont you recommend DCT for off? I understand the friction zone of the clutch is more easy to dominate than the electronic throttle, but when you do it, DCT has more advantages (Imo)
of course the seating and standing position on the 890 you don't like is intended by ktm. sitting "on top" and standing with the upper body forced to lean forward is exactly what you want when "hitting" the dirt. when you feel that you need a bar riser or not sitting in the bike, it's not the best bike for you as you concluded.
Spot on, Performance first.
ktm forgot to tighten half of the bolts making the bike even lighter as the parts are falling offf lol
My 890 runs like a rocket and absolutely can go almost anywhere my wr450 can go but I must criticize the build quality it’s surprisingly low for the price I paid
They all about cost cutting nothing more. Kove already proved u can do under 200kg twin adv bike.
Like mf, that's the whole point of adv bike.
No rear shock issues?
Of course, but you gotta love what you ride.m, and fit more than not of your situations
I agree with you entirely. 👍
I had a givi air flow screen on my 790R and it was amazing. Was meant by…I have 2023 Tiger 1200 Rally Pro….still miss the KTM
How was your long trip this summer with the bike? Still enjoying the position ?
Wow ! This was a great and honest review, not just a title to a video 👍
im glad you like it I sold my Africa twin 2 years ago and got yamaha tenere t700 best bike so far no bs modes simple and mych lest wight the at and it will run forever low compression engine not like ktm runs on 87 octane np not sure about ktm its a race bike 13.1 compression engine and its made in China so no ty Japanese made bikes ftw good luck 😊
Do you find it strange going from such a big bike to the 890?
I just couldn’t get use to it, felt like a big dual sport.
100% not from a dirt bike background. Still a fairly new rider.
Yeah the 901 was on my list when looking at the KTM, but can’t find them anywhere around. I even had to ride 5hrs just for this KTM.
I really appreciate this review and thanks for making me realize that this is the bike I am going to buy next. I love all the pros and cons you've mentioned I can live with or find a work around.
Something between the Africa Twin and the KTM890 is the Husqvarna Norden 901. A phenomenal motorcycle. End of story
This is the best review I’ve seen for this bike. Thank you!
Enjoyed your review. I just bought this bike last night.
I have a 2021 890R Decat the pipe and you will get some more sound and get rid of the extra heat on you and you rear shock.
Every review about 790/890 I saw tells me, that I dodged a great bullet when I bought Tiger 900 Rally. Great video, thanx a lot.
Same reason why i prefer my 790 ADV ti its competitors…✌🏻🙌🏻👍👍
Really good genuine, no nonsense review. Thanks
Next vid 😉😉
Norden 901. All the KTM performance with a nice wide seat and more touring oriented design.
Also worth mentioning it comes with Cruise Control and Quickshifter enabled with no extra charge.
Nice looking bike!!! I've had KTMs for a decade and love them.
You have the nicest looking 890 I've ever seen...I love the orange and black. Good review be safe.
An owners review is much better than a journalist review
I enjoyed your video
If you are looking for the do it all bike that fits between the Africa Twin & The 890
You should test ride the Tuareg 660 & the Honda Transalp
Versus the Africa Twin, it’s way easier to get to the air filter. Important when hitting the desert.
I've seen you have posted some videos about the Tiger 900 Rally too, I think I'll give them a watch.
take a serious look at the Tiger 900, it is that sweet spot!
Thanks.😎
My next vid will be a good one for u 😉
Check out the new KTM 890 SMT. Should be a banger!
Edit: providing we get it here in the Great United States of America!
I'm really enjoying your content. Why did you sell the 890 for the triumph 900?
Gas weight down low and instantly thought of Erik Buell putting that on Buells 20 years ago.
Great review and impartial , I’m leaning toward an off reader coming from sport bikes
@Adventure Undone: Great great real world, and thorough review. Thank you so much for taking the time and doing this. I’m curious because I’m like you, 70/30%…other than the Triumph TT900, were there other bikes your we’re considering?
Wow, is that the stock sticker set or aftermarket decals? It looks gorgeous!
Hi there! Great review!
Do you still own the bike?
How do you feel about it, a year after?
I'm considering buying a 2019 790s used, with 40k Km...
Yeah that was my thought as well. But the tube tires are a big downfall for me.
Wait for my next vid, I think I found a sweet spot 😉
@@adventureundone I completely agree about the tubed tires. Such a bummer that the standard AT doesn’t come with tubeless wheels
Mod. 2024 of the standard AT will have tubeless
That’s a good call, and makes sense
im in the market for one 890 adv 2022 that i found destocked and new at my dealer, currently riding a Z1000SX 19, but looking for more of a trail kind of bike.
I have a 2022 and can say this bike its also very good on road.
What is the tyre on KTM 890 Adventure ?
I do a fair amount of interstate and usually around 80-95mph wondering how the 890 would do on a longer road trip...
Maybe the Factory Racing Pegs would help even more with the riding position compared with the stock ones, as they are lower , wider etc. I guess for maximum highway protection is nothing like a 1250 GS but you'll loose some confidence on smaller trails. Very nice review nonetheless!!
Thanks for sharing your perspectives.
On the road I ride a vstrom 1050XT and I love it
them new Vstroms look sweet
My CFMOTO IBEX 800T seems like right in between... maybe more on the touring side. You definitely sit "in" the bike... I found this video because I'm considering selling the CFMOTO for the KTM... but i'm still not convinced I need to.
I had a quick Shift in 2007
You are 16 years behind
They also have a Dainese air vest that was available
Since 2007
i like adventure touring . 6 4 height . have desert sled. tsnk too small. looking at triumph tiger aragon 900, ktm 890 rally, not sure of norden 901 or desert x. thoughts ?
Hi,is there any big diff between 790 and the 890 obviously?
Excellent vid. I think the 890 would be perfect for me. Probably end up grabbing a used one next year.
Next video will be a good for for u
A Sargent low seat would put you in the bike more and an Akropovic exhaust for a deeper sound: perfect bike.
I got the wings exhaust and it helped with the note, but the engine still sounded high pitched
This is funny. I too am a 70/30 rider. 70 road 30 off road.
The difference is I live in the country and must ride dirt in order to get to street. 😂
Do you have any issues with the blinders not work or throwing a code?
Great review as I just switched from a klr 650 to the ktm adv R, the feul being located at the low end if the bike was a game changer also the suspension was off the charts. Ktm 890 was well worth the extra money.
Very good video and honest seems like a great bike. Very nice keep up the good work and I am a subscriber
Very good review, really enjoyable.
Also, there’s no unicorn. It’s a balance of compromises.
I found your channel because I'm interested in the 890, then I realized you're not too far from me. I'm down in Mobile.
Birmingham, AL 🙌
Ehhh let’s ride! We are doing the smoky 500 next week, always welcome.
@@advmike when are we gonna ride man?
@@adventureundone I’m heading up for the dragon and Cherohala in the fall. Will send you a message when I have firm dates. 👍🏻😁
Thanks for the review. It was very useful. It is said that Ktm's engines do not last as long as Japanese motorcycles, what do you think about this?
sold it before I could find out
Great video, really liked your presentation.
From all I’ve heard from your channel in between the at and the Ktm sounds like a Tuareg 660 that would be great comparison I would love to hear your thoughts
yeah I have thought about them as well, just no dealer network at all around me
Ktm network is a lot closer to me which leads me more to the Ktm 890 as well. But I still go back and fourth between the two cause it sounds as though the 660 is little more refined on the road!!!
Thanks for the review! Really appreciate
Thank you
Check out the Triumph Tiger 900
Great honest asssessment.Thanks.
Very well said. Great honest review. Thanks 😊
The plastic body is a plus for me. I can find every body part for a decent price on Rocky Mountain atvmc and no body work is required.
Maybe you could try de new V-Strom DE 800 ??
The thing I like best about this bike is exactly what you don't like: the riding position. It looks like a naked, the road can be seen very well and as if you had nothing ahead as happens on other bikes such as the africa twins. I come from the naked world and the thing that made me discard transalp or africa was just because all that plastic in front bothered me; I want to see the road not the bike.
Lol, that’s awesome man. I love how all our ride styles are so mixed, keeps the space fun and exciting. Always great conversations
Hi. Any updates on your Ktm? Do you still have it? Any problems with the engine, e g cam shafts?
no I sold it
@@adventureundone Max I ask why?
@@thomasdoe6768 It just felt a bit to cheap for the $. I know this if for offloading and such, but I also ride a lot of road. So I went with a Triumph
Great review, very informative thanks
Great video!! Thanks 😊
I’m almost in the same situation as you.. I have a 2017 Africa Twin DCT which I love also my dream bike. But now I want something more lighter but not reduced HP’s etc, so looking at the KTM890 or the Husqvarna 901 Norden expedition.
But the KTM looks great 👍🏻
Difficult decisions 😂
I regret parting with my AT, I will be getting a 24'
@@adventureundone ok! Yeh I’m afraid that I will regret me too but the 2017 I have should be replaced anyway
@@adventureundone update 😊
I got myself a slightly used 2023 ATAS DCT 😂. Fantastic bike 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Do you do much off roading? If so trust me and do NOT get dct.
Now also wait for my next vid, I really think I found a gem!
How do you deal with the heat?
It was fine for me (10hrs highway ride)
