  • Top 5 Freediving safety tips! Freediving safety has always been very important to me. I get asked a lot about freediving techniques and freediving tips but I really do believe that the most important information that I can offer and spread is freediving safety.
    If you find the information in this video useful share it around. It's up to us to create a strong and safe freediving community around the world.
    In the video I talk about:
    The use of the snorkel
    Weighting for freediving
    Diving with congestion or with a cold
    Why not to exhale underwater
    Recovery breathing

    I have gone in and out of freediving clubs various times. I suffer from severe social anxiety, people mis interpret my behaviour. This always leads to not being able to make meaningful connections/friendships. I have reached an intermediate level mostly on my own, not by choice and I realize it is dangerous.. I just have no other choice it seems.

      I think this is the reality of many people - unfortunately, the instructors take the ‘abstinence’ approach similar to conservative sex education. this means lot of what can be done when alone, aren’t discussed at all.

    Hi Adam, really love your videos, both entertaining and educational. Is there a way to know if your sinus lesion has healed or not and it's safe to go diving again? You mention widely varying healing periods, so how do you know if you're healed or not, other than going into the water to see whether you bleed again or not?

    I was diving in southern California and I heard a weird snap or click and I felt a sharp pain in my jaw. I was spearfishing and I had found a huge patch of nice fish in the shallows (15-30 ft) like 4 to 10 meters and then I felt that pain, I took off my mask and I looked inside. I was like, oh crap theirs blood?!?! Then I swam back over to my boat and almost caught a nice blue shark.
    Keep doing what your doing Adam, it helps people understand and be safer when freediving.

    Weight so that you float at the surface when you exhale.. buddy, I sink from the surface whether I have weights or not. Thank you for the safety tips and clear video! I don’t freedive (my max is 15 feet ish, I just dive to explore when I swim in sounds and lakes and such) but I am interested, and these tips are relevant to me even now! (Like now I know better than to swim super far horizontally while congested). Thanks!

    Hi Adam.
    What’s your opinion on using “non-fitted” weights as assistance to save o2 while descending?
    I mean having a appropriate or lesser amount of weights on the belt, and a additional 5-10kgs attached to the float that one could use to descend without consuming o2 and then just let go of it once you’ve reached depth. I’m thinking this would be usable in a spearfishing situation when you’d wanna increase bottom time for for example aspetto.

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know a lot of world class spearfishers who use this but it's so dangerous! A lot of these divers get decompression illness diving this way and in general i'd avoid doing it :)

    • @Vandalsounds
      @Vandalsounds 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your reply! Yeah, some people goes pretty deep, like 30-60m like this, but I'm not hunting very deep, max 20m. I just want to conserve some o2 instead of spending it all going down. Does this affect your opinion at all? :)

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure doesn't haha :) The safer and smarter option is to just develop your diving so you are comfortable to dive to 20m and stay there for a while. You should be able to do it with a relatively small amount of training :) But in general if you can't get there on your own power dont go there at all :)

    • @Vandalsounds
      @Vandalsounds 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Freediver Good answer. My problem is I live in cold dark Sweden, where it’s not possible to practice deep diving regularly. I do my deep diving while visiting family in Greece. “My island” has pretty steep cliffs and deep waters, and there is no way to catch other than little reef fish above 10-15m. Anyways, thanks for your input! :) Cheers / E

      From the very first start of freediving a little bit blood was coming out of my nose. Not at every dive or each session. But from time to time. How ever, in the end of 2015 I got a bad sinus infection which turned to be chronicle. Today it feels way better. But deep diving is still not possible. After a couple of descents my sinuses doesn't equalize anymore :-(

    Hey Adam, i got a question. Since one month i tried freediving and I have a lot of fun and ambition because of your videos. I'm just diving 4 m deep in a pool (longest time swiming under water 1:25), but there's this little problem ... when I'm diving without a mask, I don't have any problem equalising but when I'm diving with a (low volume freedive-) mask, it get's really hard for me to equalise and today i got a bleeding nose and a small pain above and under the right eye. Of course I stopped diving, but i don't know what to do to stop this pain and get to equalise properly. Do you got an answer?

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Julius Tirpitz nice work :) so what you're experiencing is a sinus squeeze and a burst blood vessel in your sinuses. Most likely in this case from not equalising the mask as you descend :)

    • @juliustirpitz1560
      @juliustirpitz1560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ok thanks a lot! I'll try that next time :) and btw, I really love your videos and how you manage to answer every single comment, keep going!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Felipe Reis that's probably just a comfort thing. Perhaps you're more comfortable doing static breath holds than diving?

    • @frbraschi
      @frbraschi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Freediver I can't say that I prefer but I am more familiar with it. I am doing Spearfishing and I am watching your videos to help me with some techniques :D

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if you have a 5 minute static breath hold them you should be able to do dives longer than 1 minute. I think the best approach will be to just take it slow and slowly over the next few months start to extend your dive times. it may feel uncomfortable in the beginning but you will gain more comfort in time

      It really depends because everyone's body is so different but by around 10m you should be neutral or negative

    Hi, very nice informative video :)) one question, when should we exhale then? is it before the recovery breathing? or do we corporate it in the recovery breathing?

      once you reach the surface, just before recovery breathing :)

    Hi, I just subscribed to your channel cause your energy is just great (yr very crazy) !
    Now...
    about this ''never dive alone'' business.....I get it on a professional lvl...but...when sometimes I go swimming on my own (I do live in Greece on a beautiful island and no one shares my enjoyment for freediving) sometimes I practice my ''holding the breath'' on my own....cant help myself. I don't act stupid ....like go really deep or try and break records I just sometimes do it....Am I asking for trouble?

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well....if you practice holding your breath just make sure you do it out of the water and when you dive keep it nice and easy and shallow and you'll be fine

    • @samxenofou60

    I do not use freediving to dive deep but just be around the surface and dive a little bit. I did not take a course yet, i can hold my breath for 3 minutes.

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's a solid breath hold Hanna :) I think most freedivers enjoy diving mostly to experience the aquatic world and marine life :) I think you would love the course if you get around to taking it :)

    Wow thanks bud im in jersey so our waters r just starting to heat up i can finally feel free again another question if possible me and my nephew have been diving at the local YMCA its been a blast and while i train he has been watching me because im amazing lol and now hes 10yrs old he is so AMAZING he equalizes to naturaly he understands depth at a rate that i can not understand BECAUSE at 10yrs old give me cereal and comics haha so hez my diving partner haha on a serious note he lovez it and is taking to it rapidly any good exercises for kids iv watch all ur videos and u never mention children diving im very safe but im alittle nervous with him any thoughts? And no he is not free diving with me

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah that's beautiful! Well when it comes to kids diving all the same rules apply but because their heart and lungs arent fully developed I would limit his depth to 5m and just let him progress slowly over the years. Once he is 16 the game changes and he will be fine to dive significantly deeper. But in terms of exercises there isn't much to do at this point, just make sure he takes a nice full breath and has heaps of fun!

    i have sinuses or flu n it usually happen a day before or when the weather becomes cold or raining.
    also if you dive without snorkel that covers the nose wouldnt you need to exhale a bit cause the pressure from water becomes higher as you swim deeper n it pushes in the nose.

    • @AdamFreediver

    Hello Adam, is there a danger of getting the divers sickness while freediving, or is a thing that happens only to scuba divers?

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean DCS, decompression sickness? No, that happens when you're breathing gas under pressure, i.e. Scuba.

    Hi Adam, just a question regarding not exhaling underwater... I see some of your videos where bubbles come's out in your mouth while exploring underwater... where you exhaling then?
    Thanks!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Banana King no not exhaling, most likely just loosing some air out of the mask because I have a beard most of the time so my mask leaks

    • @bananashidogaming
      @bananashidogaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Freediver Thanks Adam... one last question... I need help with my breath hold.. Im doing the traditional CO2 table and doing 1:30 for 8 rounds for dry static apnea... I do apnea walks as well.. now my problem is that I cant seem to simulate it when I dive. Im not sure what Im doing wrong

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you trying to simulate when you dive? Your dry breath hold times will never reflect your ability to dive when you're in the water. They help to train fitness and comfort for breath holding itself

    • @bananashidogaming
      @bananashidogaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      when I do apnea walks for about 20 meters back and forth, I try to simulate finning and do frenzel equalization as I move and do this within 1:30. So I'm trying to train myself as what I'd do underwater hoping to get improvements on the actual dive. So I'm not sure exactly how I would improve my dive.. or maybe perhaps I just nee to give myself time until i'd overcome this... :)

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your training is correct. If you're not noticing improvement maybe you need to increase the intensity of the exercise but nothing will improve your diving like just diving :)

    When taking one final breath before you dive do you do it through your stomach or your chest? Or both?

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stomach first then chest :) fill them both up!

    • @joshuakosloski6873

      How do you get down to look at scenery during your dives with that much air in you besides using a weight belt I feel too bouyant with all that air.... Also do you only exhale when very close to the surface or during your mid freedive?

  • @redalaska
    @redalaska 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unfortunately there's no freediving courses where I live in Alaska.

  • @roganmorrow
    @roganmorrow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding exhaling underwater: I've read research that seals consistently exhale on ascent as releasing air from the lungs prevents a reversal of the lung-blood oxygen gradient that results from the lungs suddenly expanding with low pressure air. In other words, exhaling air during ascent prevents oxygen in the blood from being sucked into the lungs, which is a cause of shallow water blackout. So do you think it is actually better to exhale on ascent because of this reason?

    • @tkell31
      @tkell31 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure the expanding air issue if from breathing compressed air at depth and would never come into play with free diving.
