- Grand Designs 2024 - Build Underground House
Trevor Robinson loves a challenge and there's nothing he likes more than flying his ultralight aircraft over the NSW Snowy Mountains. It's a pastime that's all the more remarkable for the fact that Trevor was paralysed when hit by a car on his motorbike a number of years ago. Now Trevor and wife Jeanette are looking to build a very special home close to nature in which Trevor can move about easily in his wheelchair. When a 15 acre block comes on the market in the Snowy's spectacular Goobarragandra hills they pounce with plans to build a remarkable underground home overlooking their 1.5 kilometre river frontage. With Trevor as project manager the build gets underway, but as the months roll on his health starts to deteriorate not only impacting how much time he can spend onsite, but whether he will be able to move to his underground retreat at all.

The Goobragandra Valley is one of the hidden gems in Australia. What a great place to build this home.
Having a river (or even a decent creek) you can legally tap is huge for an off-grid home. With a constant flow of water, you can have hydro power available when the sun isn't shining, and the wind isn't blowing, and water for drinking/bathing/etc. if rain catchment is insufficient.
While being completely underground is cool, there are some people that have discovered you can be partially underground, and get most of the benefits.
Not the first time I heard that the house would be built in 10 months time. And it certainly won't be the last time. The naive confidence of homeowners never ceases to amaze me LOL 😂
Love that house
First I didn't hear anything about waterproofing the walls. Did they also insulate the inner walls? Also they could use a layer to capture water under the dirt to harvest for house use. Fit the made the walls higher they could have all pumping and electric inside with the interior built to allow access for repairs with only one or two accesses through the exterior. I am unclear how they organized that. How much did that have on changing the temperature in summer and winter compared to a normal house. Are those windows shaded to protect against the sun light, heat , and if rays?
I think more houses should be built accessible for wheelchairs and walkers. As people get older or have injuries they won't have to loose their homes or remodel.
House location underground significantly reduced fire risk.
you are forgetting it is AUSTRALIA everything wants to kill you there, bet my ass that they have the worms from Dune there also
The Gobber Gander river? Travis seems like a real jolly fellow.
🤓 disappointed that they series makers play up all the rules and regulations for everyone’s safety as surprise attacks by the local council to hold up the process, and I did not realize that Australian Accident Compensation would not upgrade their home in Canberra to make is more than suitable for a wheelchair 🤓
Whose safety is a paper road for?
May God bless them with good health in this amazing home with family and friends.
