    Dean put on his tour guide hat for a day and visited Long Street in Cape Town. His journey takes him from the bottom to the top and down again. There are close to 60 shops and people in this video, but you only see Dean 3 or 4 times. He used a simple trick we like to call "The informal interview".
    The Informal Interview
    Not everyone likes being on camera, but luckily there is another way of getting information across to the viewer. This is something we call an informal interview. Just ask people simple questions. Obviously you may want to give your interviewee a pre-warning that you are filming (and ask permission). I put emphasis on the word simple because you don't want long open ended answers. Also try and get them to answer with the question repeated in the answer.
    Example:
    Q: Where are we? A: Here. Wrong.
    Q: Where are we? A: We are here. Correct
    This way you can cut your voice asking the question out of the final video.
    Cape Town Travel Guide take you up and down long street.
    Want to see what it's like at night in Cape Town city Centre check out this video
    Long Street, Cape Town is said to be one most dangerous city in the world... we went out to prove otherwise, by meeting the people that work here...
    If you take your credit cards and wallet with you it will end up empty from all the cool stuff you can buy.
    Or maybe not, if you have Euros & dollars to spend its one of the most affordable cities in the world not to mention the friendly people and the beauty.
    Like any major city small crime is a reality, so be vigilant and don't flash your cash.

      Long Street is a protected tourist safe zone you are more likely to meet forgieners than locals who are not encouraged to mob such a cash cow.

    I must admit when I was in South Africa last October for a month long street to me was very unnerving .
    As a solo traveler I went to bo-kaap walked down long street got near the end when five guys came out off nowhere and circled me
    Saw a hotel across the street with people outside I crossed the road went in they then vanished.
    I did not show any valuables I come from the UK so I used my Apple Watch via my phone in my pocket for directions
    But I guess people see an elderly guy is vulnerable but my tip is keep looking around and use common sense.

    Hey, thanks for this Video, the title threw me a bit off but after going through the comments I realized why you made it this. There isn't really a city that is 100% safe but Long street is a place to be at during the night, yes obviously you need to always keep your phone and wallet Close to hand. I'm born and raised here in Cape Town ❤ just love this City. Next time make a video of the what the Red City bus has to offer

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve, glad you understood our sarcasm... lots of trouble everywhere.
      Cape Town has pretty good access for disabled visitors. It's not exactly first world in all parts, but most restaurants, shops, tours & attractions cater for wheelchairs. We are a ever-growing tourism hub and people have recognised the need for this... so regardless of wanting to get up table mountain or cruising down long street Cape Town is accessible.
      Just a tip regarding safety. We are a city, and like all cities you still need to be careful with valuables. There are Pick pockets just like almost all other major tourist cities in the world.

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Super Cars of SA, we totally understand your disappointment.... we are disappointed too, here is why.
      When we first uploaded this video we named it, like ALL of our other content, exactly what it should be called: What's on Long Street. After it sat for quite a few weeks with less than 80 views, we decided to try something... we used a title related to crime in South Africa. Since the name change we have received over 100k views and counting. We don't really care about the views, otherwise we would do this on all of our other videos. The reason we have left it is to make a statement. To people & to youtube. People are obsessed with crime stats and morbid horror stories. Well we agree with you that Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities... so we asked a question: Pinned as one of the most dangerous cities? Anyone who watches this video will quickly see how safe it really is. I walked around the city (as I do) with all my camera gear. So you might say the title is unrelated, but the more views it accumulates the more relatable i think it becomes... people must wake up and see the truth about cape town, its not as dangerous as people make it out to be.
      By the way we did try this with another video and it worked too, the views just started climbing. But we changed it back as it is not our goal to con people. We have over 200 other videos about Things to do in Cape Town that nobody has bothered to watch, and this silly title does this???? pity

      And then there is that opinion too.... crime is rife... but i think within the city centre it is similar to any city in the world..pick pockets & drug dealers. the serious crime stats in cape town (like murder & rape) are predominantly accumulated in the suburbs and outskirts

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Proman476 technically yes but also no. Long street is notoriously dangerous... and at night it is "different" to the day, not a much worse in our opinion... but you are right in the sense that the statistics that govern the opinion of Cape Town crime are actually a combined record of "slum" areas.... not this street... the title is because people have a warped perception ... all cities are dangerous!!! Just watch your back, be street wise and enjoy the world

      Norwegian733 the entire street is just under 4km. Cape Town city is pretty small as it is confined by the mountain on one side and the sea on the other... so this is one of the longest in the city

      Some peoples idea of Long street (Cape Town & South Africa) is that it really is super dangerous... & our crime statistics are not entirely wrong. But people must understand that with a little bit of vigilance and travel sense you can be as safe even when filming a video in the streets with an expensive camera like I did... the title is sadly meant to attracts people as i wold much rather have left it at: The best places to visit in Long Street. But sadly It sat on TH-cam not being seen found or watched until we changed the title to this and now people are actually watching it... humans just have a curious mind when it comes to danger it seems...

      To be fair, he did ONLY show business owners. A more accurate video would be if he walked around outside the businesses and filmed the streets. But I DO agree that the US State department and even tourists often greatly over exaggerate crime stats. I've been to areas that were labeled crime infested hell holes and felt completely safe. And vice versa. Some people on Trip Advisor said to avoid Long Street even in broad daylight, but it seems to be the most popular tourist street, and I've even seen night time footage of it. I want to visit, but my partner is scared of crime.

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lisa, We actually did do some home work on this. The statistics are really skewed because lots of countries and cities that are VERY dangerous, either don't share the data or don't even record the crime statistics.

    Walk around at night and show the foreign nationals waiting to pickpocket unsuspecting victims and also how law enforcement are unable to cope with the problem. This video doesn't showcase the dangers of Long Street it's a glorified ad for Long Street.

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Waleed your are 100% right every big city in the world has a crime problem, especially unsuspecting tourists, who have there guard down because they are on holiday.
      Travel to Rome, New York, Barcelona, London, Rio and Paris simply any major city that is a tourist attraction, and you will quickly learn Cape Town pick pockets are armatures 20 years behind the rest of the world.
      Rule of any city keep your valuables close and out of sight. simple.

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @wally86_
      @wally86_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your assumption that I haven't traveled is problematic but I'll let it slide. The pickpockets here have blatant disregard for law enforcement, that's what I have not seen anywhere in the world. Also the article which directed me to this video spoke of Long Streets dangers however this videos doesn't show that, it's more of a glorified CPT tourism ad.

    • @Travelvids
      @Travelvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We just want to share with the world that Cape Town isnt as dangerous as the press want you to think, so we made a video about the busiest street in Cape Town. To highlight its just like other cities.
      Think about a book cover Waleed what makes you pick that book up in the book store, the picture and the title, video descriptions are no different. If you had read "go shopping on Long Street" would you of been intrigued to watch the video?

    • @wally86_
      @wally86_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am saying it is as dangerous if not even more so than the press would have us believe . I do understand you are trying to put CPT on the map and that's fine but lets also be honest , Long Street at night is dangerous and even with law enforcement unable to keep their hand on the situation , people should be aware of this . I also didn't mention the brazen drug dealing which takes place , you'll be offered anything from Heroin to Marijuana whilst taking a simple stroll up the street. So in conclusion , promote CPT by all means , we need the additional revenue generated by tourists but be balanced in your approach .
