Excellent job with this video Brett and Claire. I worked for years in boutique hotel management and you have given a very balanced depiction of traveling around our city that has proved true for virtually all our foreign guests we had over the years, who had an amazing time in our incredible city without incident. I could not love Cape Town more. The eclectic mix of African, European and Eastern vibes here, against such a spectacular backdrop, is very unique in the world.

Please don't lie... I lived in Cape Town for 30 years. I have had 16 car breakins, I have been stabbed, I have been mugged, I have had 4 cars stolen, I have had 2 house breakins and I have been in about 30 fist fights. I lived in what you described as a good area... Cape Town is horribly dangerous. You are probably only living there because of Covid and visa issues. I predict that you will be travelling again soon. I don't tell people that I immigrated, I tell people that I escaped cape town. I am one of the lucky ones that was able to get out.

Thanks for the video. The CBD, however, does NOT feel like a first world city. The poverty is ubiquitous and I’ve been chased everyday by people begging for money. Once I saw a stabbed person on the street bleeding surrounded by police waiting for the ambulance. I’d love to believe it’s safe but during the 10 weeks I spent in CT, which has its beautiful spots, I have not really felt safe. I always had a look over my shoulder. Having said that: nothing happened to me and I believe that if you are aware you can avoid most dangerous situations. I’ll be back end of November and hope we will be safe! Keep up the good content :)

Beware of the police looking to shake you down, particularly if you rent a car. I've lived in South Africa in the past, so quite familiar with the country. We were last there about 3 years ago. We rented a car as per usual. Always fun re-adjusting to life on the "other side of the road" but I quickly fall into the swing of things.
Anyway, we were coming back to our Airbnb flat in Sea Point one evening, about 21:00. Along the side of Main Road there was a police vehicle (no lights) and a few cops standing near it, looking casual and checking out passing vehicles. Not an organized check-stop type of thing. They decided to waive our car over, presumably because they saw something they liked. There was no actual legal reason to waive us over (moving violations, vehicle safety, etc).
They quickly figured out that we were tourists, then wanted some documents that we did not have with us. As it was, we were literally in front of the flat, so I offered to run up and grab what they needed. Oh no, that wouldn't work. We were to be arrested and the rental car impounded. They were sure to tell us how expensive that would all be. First the "bad cop" appearing fierce and determined. Then the "good cop" comes to our window. The bad cop is behind him at this point, giving a truly Oscar-worthy performance, verging on histrionic, still going on about the litany of troubles we would have to face. It was hard to keep a straight face actually. The "good cop" is smiling away and tells us that he has decided to let us go, but couldn't we please help out with a little "gift", you know, so his two friends wouldn't be mad at him for allowing us to go free. No, no we cannot. I ended up just thinking him with my own 100 mega-watt smile, then quickly headed the 50 metres up the road and into the gated parking. It was good that we were so close to our place as I'm not positive they would not have regrouped and tried a second time to pull us over and extort their bribe. I think they were just shocked when I politely thanked them and drove off. Might not recommend the just drive off approach for everyone in this situation, but the circumstances seemed to work in our case.
I guess it was a big thing up in Joburg some years back. The cops would target the tourists returning to the airport, picking out the rental cars on that particular stretch of road. Then they make up some story and tell the hapless occupants of the car that the problem might take many hours to sort out. A most unwelcome delay if you're hustling to catch a flight. I guess the rental agents told of a string of people coming in to return cars, all with the same story of being forced to pay a good chunk of cash to be allowed to continue on their journey.
Proof that the fish rots from the head down. I still love Africa, and particularly Cape Town. I will likely be back as long as it is safe to do so. I do worry about the government thoroughly destroying the place, but then I worry just as much about our own Canadian government doing the same here. Perhaps one day we will all figure out the government is the greatest threat to freedom and security known to man (and woman).

Perfectly illegal conduct by cops. But this happens when you have a neo-Marxist govt that employed well over 3,000 convicted criminals as police officers. Hello, this is what Mandela's "rainbow nation" looks like in real life.

Travelled in November, lone older white male. Walked approx 35,000 steps a day on my own - stayed on Long Street (Grand Daddy - great hotel btw). Salt River district, all over downtown, hotel through canal district and harbour to V&A, Seapoint along coast walk to Camps Bay, Long Street to Bokaap and all over that area. Did not do night walks apart from Long Street itself that has alot of guard along it at least till midnight. Was careful but had no issues and in fact just the opposite - fantastic walks. Cape Town really is one of those great walking cities with its geography, architecture, cafes, and sites. Be careful but in my view it is a highly walkable city.

Been Cape Town twice, it is relatively safe as long as your smart. As long as you take a Uber, travel before 8pm and make sure your in well populated areas which have tourists you will be fine. Also most malls are a good place to walk around withouth having to worry. Most of the crimes happen outside the city and if you stay in a hotel you probably won't see any of it. Most resturants are safe, just make sure they are in a decent area with a good amount of people. Safe travels guys

Sorry to hear your home town has let you down.
Cities can change over time, as you know, for better or worse.
I just read a book on African fashion (the whole continent) which enthused about how up-and-coming Jo-burg is in the whole fashion scene. Jo-burg, and … (get this!) Lagos, believe it or not.
Questions I have for you, about SA please, are:
      1) Did you two ever consider moving to Durban, or Pretoria?
      2) And, please: What attracted you two to Capetown over any other South African city?

    • @SuiGenerisAbbie

For people so young to have that much of a nest egg saved up to be able to just up and retire (ir you will) is a-maaaaazing!
Oops, I lied. I have still some more questions sorry.
      4) At timepoint 03:23 in this terrific and informative video, I see a road sign I don't recognise, so I do not know what it means. What does an S with a diagonal red line through it, mean, please? i am guessing "No Standing", maybe?

I got robbed last wednesday on Muiznberg beach. I went jogging on the beach at 4 pm, ran for 2 km along the beach until I was surrounded by only nature, when two guys showed up from nowhwhere with a knife.
Black South African friend got punshed got robbed 3 weeks ago in Muizenberg, got punched by 16 year old kids who took his glasses.
A German friend was robbed in the central business district two moths ago.
A coulored South African friend got robbed 5 years ago by a buch of 12 year olds when was talkign a nap on the beach in Kalk Bay. They thretened to stab her.
    So yeah. Totally safe.
Anyways, that does not deter me from stayinganother 3 months in Muizenberg. I think as long as you stay where people are, you will be safe.

We’re sorry to hear of yours, and your friends experiences😢🙏🏻. Glad you’re enjoying the rest of your time though! Please don’t run far down Muizenberg beach again, that’s right on the border of Mitchell’s Plain. Which is one of the red zones we mention in this video. Avoid being close to those areas🙏🏻. Totally agree with you about staying around people. Stay safe!

Since 2004, lived in the eastern suburbs, the north, the deep south, the west and all along the CBD and Atlantic Seaboard. (All of Cape Town only has Atlantic Ocean, btw)
Been mugged in Muizenberg and Kommetjie, and Matroosfontein. Very low crime in Seapoint.
Our 6 day old camera was robbed from us in the Grand Parade centre Dec 2019.
I was robbed at gunpoint on the Cape Flats while I worked.
This is nothing compared to crime I witnessed in Pretoria.
That young guy is harmless yet scary, he has a mental condition.
The homeless actually help keep crime down. I once left my big makulu Samsung Galaxy on a park bench, and two homeless guys saw what happened, and brought me my phone. They went well out of their way to find me.
    Use common sense.
Where I worried often was when walking alone after dark in Wembley & Neasden in London.
The past 19 years in Cape Town showed a safe place. Just use common sense.

Question: How would you describe the current situation with load shedding? I'm considering travelling to Cape Town during mid of March this year (not booked jet). Would you recommend traveling there right now with the load shedding situation? Is it any worse than usual?
Also a big thank you for providing these super helpful videos!

    • @RhettandClaire
      @RhettandClaire  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Totally! Book your trip🥰. Loadshedding isn't going away anytime soon but it's really not bad if you plan well😁. Stay in hotels, airbnbs and coliving spaces that don't have load shedding (contact them and ask if they have load shedding). For example, we're in Neighbourgood Reserve and there's no load shedding here at all. If you do have load shedding, go out into nature, swim at the beach, go for a hike, go wine tasting. There's so much to do that isn't affected by load-shedding😁🙌🏼

I read that many families have evacuation drills, in case they need to run for their lives. I read that many Africans who don't have proper homes, or jobs say that Africa belongs to them, and have attacked the farms there, so is this true? South Africa has been home to white Dutch settlers, and I have only known South Africa to be mostly white; is that true? I know that Africa is a huge continent, and there are many places that do not do the right thing for their citizens; and so many people are not happy.

Do you need to be able to communicate in afrikaans in Capetown or be able to understand afrikaans? Most big cities and especially tourists ones have 'homeless' people living on the streets. It's distressing to see for the first time. It's common in English cities now. What exactly is being done for the homeless? Do the churches have any outreach programmes for them, or is it so 'common place' that everyone gives them 'small change' and simply 'walks on'. Are their 'cultural' and 'historic' tours also, or is colonial history 'divisive' in Cape Town and not spoken about. Thank you for your video. So never go anywhere walking at night.

    • @RhettandClaire
      @RhettandClaire  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey George! No you don’t need to communicate in Afrikaans at all, everyone speaks English.
The local municipality is slowly building housing for homeless South Africans and South Africans living in informal townships. The government is unfortunately not able to build housing for foreigners (from neighbouring African countries) and so many will continue living on the streets here without help. They don’t receiver help from their home countries either. There are NPOs that try and help too. I feel like the local millionaires of Cape Town could do better as well, because they have the finances to do so.
And yes, there are lots of tours you can go on. Townships tours, walking tours, apartheid museum tours, there’s the slave museum across the road from us, and robbed island. The red bus tour that we recommend speaks you through the history and current state of Cape Towns inequality too. The history of Cape Town and South Africa is openly and actively spoken about here🙏🏻

    Comments:
** Claire, you are quite pretty, truth be told. While I think cat-calling is ODIOUS, to be sure, because you are so good looking and Rhett is too, men unfortunately will ... "remark" upon that, sometimes quite crudely.
** Your apartment looks posh, and comfy. I am looking forward to seeing it in full and maaaaybe (?) knowing what you pay for rent, and other living expenses (power, sewer, water, food, heat, A/C, garbage removal, hot water, etc.)
** Gosh, I have to confess that I would never ask a complete Stranger to look after my stuff whilst I went swimming. Really I would not. Leaving stuff with anyone one does not know can be a bit tricky. Hoping there are lockers or some such at your beaches) where one can stow one's beach stuff, whilst going for a dip, or ...
I am such a "Curious George", sorry about that. Curious Georges are what we Americans call ... curious people, of any gender.
I always ask people a gazillion questions and remark upon this-n-that, as well.
Both are just in my nature, and always have been thus.
😃 Thank you always for answering what you do, Guys! 😃

I have commented previously, but just today, June 7, 2023, my dear wife got robbed of her phone at the Grand Central building, where Game, Post Office, SPAR, MTN, WCED, etc., are. She also got robbed there in Dec 2019. Often, these crimes are committed by illegal immigrants. Poverty is no excuse. Lack of Police is no excuse. I am anything but wealthy, yet I don't steal. Also, I choose to be a good citizen. I don't need getting nannied by cops to become a responsible citizen. I am no boy scout but I choose not to be civil filth. People should be taught self respect. Nobody with self-respect will disrespect and assault others. Criminals are filth, badly bred vermin. They're not human.
