I first got the itch for this life when I was about 18/19 and the older I get the more I fall in love with this style of living. There’s never a boring moment, there’s always something to do, the work feels meaningful and gives me purpose so it is always so worth it. Bushradical said something in the part 1 video that I’ll paraphrase: “humans are meant to build their own house, it’s in our DNA”. I’ll take it a step further and say humans are meant to live in nature and use their labor for growing food, woodworking, welding, raising animals, etc. and not to be stuck behind a desk in front of a screen. A simple life and living in harmony with nature is the best/healthiest way to live for most people-basically the exact opposite of what our society and mass media leads you to believe you need for peace and happiness.
I've built many things and a two-person crew is more than twice as fast as a one person crew. When you were putting on the roof tin, Brook was hauling and handing it up. Saving those up and downs is huge. In addition, another person to grab dropped items, remember things you'll forget, hold up the end of a long piece (instead of building a jig to do it), all makes for a lot more efficiency. You two work really well together and that's a joy.

I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.
For a small cabin a simple shed roof works well. For a larger one, the tall side and short side have to differ by too much to get the water to run off OK. In that case you switch to a peaked roof of some type.
If you're getting up to a point of worrying about water running off the roof you gone past the point where you had a tiny cabin I mean 10×12 is small but still doable for most people
Here in Finland we never put just one layer of windows but two. The space between the windows works as an insulation. In old houses the inner window is often removable so during summer time it helps to keep the house bit cooler.
I didn't go to college, I started up building houses in the early 2000s as a means to an end, ended up sticking with it and working for builders that build 50 million dollar houses....thank god i learned.... interior and exterior. Sweat Equity, that's how you get ahead

Another great video! Just remember that "easy" is after he's spent 20 years in construction. If you're a beginner you'll be making mistakes while you learn, so go easy on yourself. When joining stovepipe, want the top pipe's tail inside the lower pipe. Creosote from the burning wood will condense (especially from a slow fire) and run down inside the pipe, and you want that to stay inside rather than run down the outside of the stovepipe. Use only special high-temperature paint, if you paint. Glad to see him putting in heat shields! People have been killed by stoves igniting houses.
Wasn’t super comfortable he doesn’t have a clean out tee. Especially since he cut cost and went with what looks like single wall pipe on the outside. Soot and creosote is going to build up quick as the exhaust starts to cool.
Think about reversing the smoke pipe sections from the wood stove by using the female end first from the stove connection.This will help prevent the creosote from running down the outside of the pipe connection seams after some usage . Still an Excellent video.
I just built my first 10x12 cabin. It is our kitchen. I'm building 2 smaller single pitch roof cabins for living areas. I didn't build exactly what you did but I have watched these 2 build videos a lot of times for ideas and "how you done it" along with the well and a few others. I am almost done building up my first off grid homestead and ready to save money to move to our land in the mountains that we been wanting. Great videos :)

Hey man, I gotta say that I am very grateful to you for these videos. My partner has some land that we're building a few tiny houses on and we were struggling to get something up before winter so we ended up just following right along with this video series and it looks like we're gonna have something very similar to this completed in a week or two. This kind of very simple comprehensive guidance that makes it all very accessible is hard to come by if you haven't grown up with anybody who does construction, and for both of us it's set us off on the path towards being able to do even more complex building projects, and I just want to say it's very much thanks to you in this case, so thank you! That's not a mistake, and I hope you can allow yourself some grace and give both of you permission to grow. Be the example you need for your self, and I hope you find your path to happiness.

The part about burning the wood stove beforehand was interesting! In all the videos I've seen of people talking about wood stoves they've used for their homes, none of them have ever mentioned burning it beforehand (though probably because they didn't know themselves) or about any smell it's produced. Thanks for the tip!

Considering you've built so many. Good practice is bringing the outer cladding down over the still visible floor sheet edge this would prevent the guranteed ingress of dampness
Door should open outward, only thing that I would definitely do different. Reason more space inside and harder to be kicked or forced in and also for escape reasons, a fire, multiple people, it's easier to get out.

When I was 19 (30 years ago) I spent the night at my then GFs apartment, a jealous guy tied a rope from the inswing doorknob to the railing outside, then in the am I could only open the door just enough to squeeze my arm through to cut the rope.
My dream used to be to save money for a second hand white van to sleep in. Also wondered about buying cheap land/terrain (one of those that doesnt allow construction) and then buy a cheap wood garden "house" with a small solar panel to live in. Now I have a small t0 apartment (gonna spend 30 years paying it) but still remember sometimes about my dreams of the past so these videos are awesome..

The two of them were on the show "Alone" and I thought the same thing :) I won't spoil it for you, but needless to say, they built a very cool shelter. Brooke's "temporary shelter" was impressive on its own.

Something I found when building my house, the harder I hit those nails the less often they bent. Lots of gentle taps seemed to warm them up and soften them. Bam, bam, bam, bam. Done.

When screwing roof sheets, always use the longer screws and screw through the ridges of the roof sheets, not the valleys. That roof will leak like a sieve because the screws are in the valleys. Apart from that, I enjoyed the videos. Just need our little piece of paradise to build one of these on!

Nice! That red on black color scheme is perfect! I love that you used an old pane of glass for your big picture window.( I however would have used a foam strip on the inside of the window frame before installing that glass. It would have sealed out cold and also, provided a snug fit. Just walking in the cabin will create vibration and over time create a bigger gap in the window seal, even if caulked on the inside and outside. ) But my man, you are an expert crafts couple. I loved watching you build this:) Ill be checking out more of your videos.

I am planning on using your simple approach to build a much needed shed on my current property. Never built from scratch before so this will be a test of my skills. If I get that done, I am buying some land up north and building my own cabin. Thanks for showing us how simple it can be!
I installed 2 wood stoves for the 2 houses I lived in and I always avoided elbows. Not just for the complexity but also because sweeping the chimney would be a pain with all the bends and screws. Despite what many people say, I find it a lot easier to go through the roof. Great video, keep us updated! I wish I had 1/10 of your skills!
All you need out in the woods where there's no electricity is cordless power tools to build anything. Indoor heating all you need is a wood stove. I'm a carpenter and I like to watch videos like these to expand my mind. It's simple to build anything out of lumber. Pretty simple.

After re-viewing this and part 1, I could see myself living in a small cabin... a wee bit larger... the way you've built it. But at 68 and in a wheelchair, unable to work as well as I used to, it seems far off. On Social Security, I'm lucky to afford to eat regularly, so I must disagree with the idea that "anyone" can afford it. I still dream. For years I had put it off, because my former wife thought that living off the grid in a remote cabin was not a good idea... away from doctors, friends, Walmart. But as I said to her then, I'd rather die quietly in the woods than to live five years longer in a noisy, dirty city. To each their own, I guess! Thank you.
Have to agree with the "anyone can afford it". There's a lot of people struggling just to have a few extra dollars at the end of the month, and this assumes being able to afford a piece of property and the annual taxes on it to begin with. I would have been happier with a title of "almost anyone can afford".
@@NorthernKitty I think that is unfair to lay on Dave. Yes there are people who are struggling. There are also people who have saved, used long term planning to build and live their dreams. They've also developed a skill set to allow them to do things cheaper. Dave and Brooke have worked hard, developed skill sets, bought remote property that is less expensive, sourced and saved materials at reasonable costs that allow them to do this. Why not celebrate a win instead of trying to correct this man over a matter of wording and others views of the world? A bungalow on the Bird Streets in LA right now is about 25 million. Everything is relative.

I have found that birds fly toward bright colors. Examples: I put flowers by the window and bird hit the glass. Hummingbird goes to the red liquid and bright flowers to feed.
I'm watching this for ideas for a cabin for my daughter in our back yard. When I saw the sloth on the door, her favorite animal and theme of her last birthday, I knew I picked the right video.

These videos are super helpful and informative I feel like you’re explaining just the right amount of information for anyone even a beginner to be able to feel comfortable doing something like this. And I find the narrative and the way that you explain it to be very calm and patient and makes it seem like a very positive process rather than a burden or a hassle. The way hi I have sometimes received information for building things in the past has been very discouraging and negative. So it is very awesome for me to receive some knowledge in a way that uplifts me and empowers me to try this again and to view it as a joy rather than a fear or inconvenience

I first got the itch for this life when I was about 18/19 and the older I get the more I fall in love with this style of living. There’s never a boring moment, there’s always something to do, the work feels meaningful and gives me purpose so it is always so worth it. Bushradical said something in the part 1 video that I’ll paraphrase: “humans are meant to build their own house, it’s in our DNA”. I’ll take it a step further and say humans are meant to live in nature and use their labor for growing food, woodworking, welding, raising animals, etc. and not to be stuck behind a desk in front of a screen. A simple life and living in harmony with nature is the best/healthiest way to live for most people-basically the exact opposite of what our society and mass media leads you to believe you need for peace and happiness.
I've built many things and a two-person crew is more than twice as fast as a one person crew. When you were putting on the roof tin, Brook was hauling and handing it up. Saving those up and downs is huge. In addition, another person to grab dropped items, remember things you'll forget, hold up the end of a long piece (instead of building a jig to do it), all makes for a lot more efficiency. You two work really well together and that's a joy.
Imagine how fast it would be if they used a nail gun

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.
For a small cabin a simple shed roof works well. For a larger one, the tall side and short side have to differ by too much to get the water to run off OK. In that case you switch to a peaked roof of some type.
If you're getting up to a point of worrying about water running off the roof you gone past the point where you had a tiny cabin I mean 10×12 is small but still doable for most people

Here in Finland we never put just one layer of windows but two. The space between the windows works as an insulation. In old houses the inner window is often removable so during summer time it helps to keep the house bit cooler.
we do too but they used used glass. It seems foolish not to put in another piece of glass in an area that obviously will get cold.
You can get insulated glass that has two quarter-inch panes with a half-inch air space. They work just as well.

Just remember that "easy" is after he's spent 20 years in construction. If you're a beginner you'll be making mistakes while you learn, so go easy on yourself.
When joining stovepipe, want the top pipe's tail inside the lower pipe. Creosote from the burning wood will condense (especially from a slow fire) and run down inside the pipe, and you want that to stay inside rather than run down the outside of the stovepipe.
Use only special high-temperature paint, if you paint.
Glad to see him putting in heat shields! People have been killed by stoves igniting houses.
Wasn’t super comfortable he doesn’t have a clean out tee. Especially since he cut cost and went with what looks like single wall pipe on the outside. Soot and creosote is going to build up quick as the exhaust starts to cool.
Think about reversing the smoke pipe sections from the wood stove by using the female end first from the stove connection.This will help prevent the creosote from running down the outside of the pipe connection seams after some usage . Still an Excellent video.
I just built my first 10x12 cabin. It is our kitchen. I'm building 2 smaller single pitch roof cabins for living areas. I didn't build exactly what you did but I have watched these 2 build videos a lot of times for ideas and "how you done it" along with the well and a few others. I am almost done building up my first off grid homestead and ready to save money to move to our land in the mountains that we been wanting. Great videos :)

My partner has some land that we're building a few tiny houses on and we were struggling to get something up before winter so we ended up just following right along with this video series and it looks like we're gonna have something very similar to this completed in a week or two. This kind of very simple comprehensive guidance that makes it all very accessible is hard to come by if you haven't grown up with anybody who does construction, and for both of us it's set us off on the path towards being able to do even more complex building projects, and I just want to say it's very much thanks to you in this case, so thank you! The part about burning the wood stove beforehand was interesting! In all the videos I've seen of people talking about wood stoves they've used for their homes, none of them have ever mentioned burning it beforehand (though probably because they didn't know themselves) or about any smell it's produced. Door should open outward, only thing that I would definitely do different. Reason more space inside and harder to be kicked or forced in and also for escape reasons, a fire, multiple people, it's easier to get out.

When I was 19 (30 years ago) I spent the night at my then GFs apartment, a jealous guy tied a rope from the inswing doorknob to the railing outside, then in the am I could only open the door just enough to squeeze my arm through to cut the rope.

My dream used to be to save money for a second hand white van to sleep in. Also wondered about buying cheap land/terrain (one of those that doesnt allow construction) and then buy a cheap wood garden "house" with a small solar panel to live in.
Now I have a small t0 apartment (gonna spend 30 years paying it) but still remember sometimes about my dreams of the past so these videos are awesome..

Something I found when building my house, the harder I hit those nails the less often they bent. Lots of gentle taps seemed to warm them up and soften them. Bam, bam, bam, bam. Done.

When screwing roof sheets, always use the longer screws and screw through the ridges of the roof sheets, not the valleys. That roof will leak like a sieve because the screws are in the valleys. Apart from that, I enjoyed the videos. Just need our little piece of paradise to build one of these on!
Yea, also, there are these little rubber (ebonite?) studs to put under the ridges so you don't damage the sheet when screwing; and for a tighter fit.

Nice! That red on black color scheme is perfect! I love that you used an old pane of glass for your big picture window.( I however would have used a foam strip on the inside of the window frame before installing that glass. It would have sealed out cold and also, provided a snug fit. Just walking in the cabin will create vibration and over time create a bigger gap in the window seal, even if caulked on the inside and outside. ) But my man, you are an expert crafts couple. I installed 2 wood stoves for the 2 houses I lived in and I always avoided elbows. Not just for the complexity but also because sweeping the chimney would be a pain with all the bends and screws. Despite what many people say, I find it a lot easier to go through the roof.

All you need out in the woods where there's no electricity is cordless power tools to build anything. Indoor heating all you need is a wood stove. I'm a carpenter and I like to watch videos like these to expand my mind. It's simple to build anything out of lumber. Pretty simple.

After re-viewing this and part 1, I could see myself living in a small cabin... a wee bit larger... the way you've built it. But at 68 and in a wheelchair, unable to work as well as I used to, it seems far off. On Social Security, I'm lucky to afford to eat regularly, so I must disagree with the idea that "anyone" can afford it. I still dream. For years I had put it off, because my former wife thought that living off the grid in a remote cabin was not a good idea... away from doctors, friends, Walmart. But as I said to her then, I'd rather die quietly in the woods than to live five years longer in a noisy, dirty city. To each their own, I guess! Thank you.
Maybe your current or next girl will build one for you.
Have to agree with the "anyone can afford it". There's a lot of people struggling just to have a few extra dollars at the end of the month, and this assumes being able to afford a piece of property and the annual taxes on it to begin with. I would have been happier with a title of "almost anyone can afford".
@@NorthernKitty I think that is unfair to lay on Dave. Yes there are people who are struggling. There are also people who have saved, used long term planning to build and live their dreams. They've also developed a skill set to allow them to do things cheaper. Dave and Brooke have worked hard, developed skill sets, bought remote property that is less expensive, sourced and saved materials at reasonable costs that allow them to do this. Why not celebrate a win instead of trying to correct this man over a matter of wording and others views of the world? A bungalow on the Bird Streets in LA right now is about 25 million. Everything is relative.

Nor did I fail to "celebrate a win", my OTHER comment here was: "Thanks so much for sharing this, inspiring dreams!!" I thought Thomas made a fair point and merely explained why. For all either you or I know, Dave may fully agree in retrospect. There are a ton of people with nothing right now despite a lifetime of saving and planning. I just felt we shouldn't ignore that reality. I'm truly sorry if you feel they're somehow at fault for their own circumstances and not worthy of any consideration, or perhaps just wanting to practice denial that they exist. Finally, if you were so interested in creating more positivity in the world, you wouldn't have turned my comment into something it wasn't, trying to pick a fight with me.

I think red is a good idea. Maybe the birds will look and not crash into the glass.
I have found that birds fly toward bright colors. Examples: I put flowers by the window and bird hit the glass. Hummingbird goes to the red liquid and bright flowers to feed.

These videos are super helpful and informative I feel like you’re explaining just the right amount of information for anyone even a beginner to be able to feel comfortable doing something like this. And I find the narrative and the way that you explain it to be very calm and patient and makes it seem like a very positive process rather than a burden or a hassle. The way hi I have sometimes received information for building things in the past has been very discouraging and negative. So it is very awesome for me to receive some knowledge in a way that uplifts me and empowers me to try this again and to view it as a joy rather than a fear or inconvenience
