- In this video my wife Brooke and I build a very simple, very affordable cabin. With a simple single pitch roof and only 2 windows. While I was filming this building project so was Brooke. You can check out her first video featuring this cabin by clicking the link below. I'll see you on part 2

Thanks for your video. At 67 years old and only a little building experience, I built your cabin successfully and added a nice deck to boot. It took me three months, but it was worth it. It is sitting on 32 acres near Nashville. Wish I could add a picture. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Hey Guys I did it! I bought the land, 2.6 acres, and built your cabin, well, close, a few design alterations. I just finished closing it in, good thing too as I'm in Canada. I really need to thank you. Your words, and I'm paraphrasing, "Everybody needs an out of the way place of their own..." resonated with me completely, and now it's reality. Thank you for all your time and effort in producing your videos.

I’m glad to see that I’m in a long list of people that decided to build this cabin, I lived in my van for 600 days before I found land out west & built a nearly identical cabin with an 8 foot picture window. Thanks Dave!

when I was around 18-19 yrs old I worked part time at Home Depot. A young married couple came in every weekend to buy building materials....they took one of their paychecks every week to pay for them and worked on building their home every weekend. The point was to build as they go and have their home paid for when finished with it. I thought it was a very good idea for a young couple! Everybody has their different ideas of how to do things! There are many ways to get it done! I remembered that while watching your great video!

Seems smart at first, but having your bare-bones house exposed to the elements for that longs isn't good for the longevity of the build. Hopefully they kept it tarped or something

I want to thank you for your simple explanation of how to build a cabin . I'm a 62 yr old woman who tackled this build by myself . I modified a few things but yours is the shed that I used as my model. Thank you for the inspiration! I wish I could share my shed pictures
Thank you for notching your foundation posts! So many people on TH-cam building cabins relying on nail sheer strength, friction, hopes and dreams.
My wife and I built our cabin/home by ourselves. I milled my own beams and floor joists from the trees we removed. All other materials we purchased at the local mill. We ended up with a 400sqft cabin in the forest of northern New Brunswick for under $5000.
Could you make a video of it and maybe a quick price list I'm in Canada as well and I would love to do this I just dont want to get in over my head I dont have alot if experience and I dont want to spend alot either

My wife built our first cabin for $14. She saved us a fortune in actual labor costs.

@@thegardenguy9160 I have been meaning to make videos of some of my projects/adventures I build and fab alot of things and just basically live life to the fullest. I tell people all the time to just jump in even if you don't know what you are doing because you will learn along the way. We also have a sailboat that we are refitting as a live aboard. I am going to start making videos in the spring there's nothing too exciting happening in winter so I will keep you posted if you want.
His biggest motivation is having a wife who is totally committed to their shared vision.

Yeah, this video is awesome! I love it. I also love that his wife is also hands-on with the build and knows how to drive a hammer etc. Great to see. I really like this build, and I love the idea of using the concrete biscuits instead of digging pile holes and filling with wet cement. The concrete biscuits will act superbly as load-spreaders, and it is such a cheap and brilliant idea - elegant in fact. :) Well done, and excellent video production too. Thanks for posting it!

My parents (50ish years married) doing something like this would entail my dad building everything while my mother, who has never swung a hammer in her life, would continually tell him he’s doing every step wrong. They’d bicker the entire day, mom handing him tools or beers all the while, and be completely happy the entire time. Reverse the roles once they get home and mom starts making dinner. Continual bickering lol.
It’s really special to see. You’d think they hate each other if you don’t know them but that’s when they’re the happiest.
I too built this cabin! Thanks for the video that inspired me to take this leap. I finished mine out to use as an office and workshop as an outbuilding and am excited to have a space for my work. A word of caution to those who start this: if you use standard dimensional lumber (not rough sawn like the video shows), build your floor with 2x8s, 16” on center, and double up around the rim. I did 2x6s not doubled like the video shows (but I did 16” o.c) and my rim and joists sagged, leading to a lot of extra work at the end to stabilize and straighten it out.

As a production carpenter, this could be framed and sheeted in a day. The only difference is this man probably enjoyed the process a lot more.

@@Megadeadpeople I see, thanks for letting me know. I’m interested in trying this out as a beginner so experience will probably be the major factor. Do you have any recommendations of videos or something on doing carpentry in the best way?
@@DoubleBullet Getting a framing nail gun and air compressor would speed up any build exponentially. In the video they hand nailed everything which gave a relaxed dynamic but added a significant amount of time. That’s a start. Also the framing method varies based on the type of foundation you use.
As a builder myself, totally agree. However, I find the love for it shows in his work. He's not for profit, just building with his girl.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your teaching us how to do this. I sadly don't have a relationship with my dad, who is a builder, anymore. He taught me some things while we built our houses growing up, but he wasn't a patient teacher, so a lot of it was left to the imagination for me. This has given me hope that I can do this, and teach my kids to, too.

I’ve got some of my grandfather’s blacksmithing tools. Not nearly everything he had but the anvil and an old portable forge with a hand crank blower. Until arthritis came along I was slowly teaching myself to make a few items. Now I’m hoping to get my son involved. But I need to build a propane forge. I can’t get good coal here at all, just the soft crap that got a lot of dirt in it. Hard to keep a clean fire and it’s loaded with sulfur. Stinks up the whole neighborhood and the neighbors complain.

I'm in my 60's and have done a lot of building...you taught me a few tricks in this excellent video! Such a quality vid....background music is firmly in the background, voice over is calm and soothing...simple knowledge passed along simply. And Brooke is wicked good with a hammer! Thank you.

I watched this video and was inspired to build my first cabin behind my property. It's not completed, nor is it perfect, but its mine and super fun to work on. My next one will be better from the errors I've made. Thank you for your videos!
Just persevere and do it again. You will get better. My ex is a master carpenter. I quilt and crochet. I wish I could design things but it takes practices. Build upon basics. Work smarter, not harder. Finally, measure twice and cut once. Hope you succeed in all you wish and dream of. Alot of high schools have adult vocational training. Call a help line near you or call local high school. Hope that helps!!! :)

Watching this brings back a lot of memories. I'm 73 yrs old and helped my Grandfather build simple but strong houses in the late 50s and early 60s. We also grew tobacco and cotton and did all the work with our own hands and a team of mules. I firmly believe that my generation has lived through the greatest time that this country will ever see.

The younger generation has no idea of the amount of physical labor that it took decades back just to live. The small community that I lived in was off the beaten track and had no telephone service in the middle 50s. The first telephone in our community was installed in my parents' home. A crank-type device- you turned a crank handle on the side and the operator would answer. The reasoning behind putting it my parents' house was because they were the youngest couple in the community and would be more likely to answer the call. They would then go to whomever the call was for and fetch them to to phone. Telephones back then weren't used as they are today. Most of the calls that happened were to inform families of a death or an impending death.
During the fall of the year, our county schools turned out for "cotton vacation". Cotton and Tobacco were the prime cash crops back then in middle TN. We picked cotton every day for the going rate of 3 cents per pound. Our cotton sacks were six to nine feet long and would hold maybe thirty pounds before you'd drag it to the scales wagon and have it weighed and dumped into a mule-drawn wagon. Most of the fields were half to a mile long.
I grew up also with parents who built their own house when it was possible to do so in Ireland back in the late 60's. Most neighbours were tradespeople who built their own houses because the would not get loans from the banks due to not having a steady job but were too "rich" to qualify for public housing. Some could get council loans but these were dearer than bank loans ( higher interest) due to risk of non payment.
@@jgdooley2003 Banks here- (out of town) were not prone to lend money unless you had money in accounts that exceeded the amount that you wanted to borrow. The people who were your neighbors would be willing to donate a few days helping- they knew that they'd get paid back in labor during "hog-killing time".
@@cummings37128 The Irish rural dwellers had a similar communal self help system called meitheal where neighbours helped each other out in heavy labour times such as harvests etc and in building and repairing their houses.

The story you told about the man at the Dump was very moving. Thank you for sharing.
Tip for standing big walls that you cant afford to slide off: nail a couple pieces of temporary scrap with the 4 inch (wide side) down where the wall will stand. Then lay your wall down and push the bottom plate against it. toenail the bottom plate to the floor with 1 nail at each end of the wall, then remove the scrap wood stopped you nailed down. Now, you lift the wall, and the nails bend as you do, and prevent the wall from sliding off the floor. It also means you should be perfectly lined up with your floor, since it cant move past it sideways much either. If its off a bit just take the sledge to nudge it into place.
Basically you'll lay a board flat on the ground where the wall stands. Put a couple nails in it. Lay your wall down or build it where you can slide the bottom plate to the board you put a couple nails In. Toe nail( nail your wall your standing up down into the ground. Make sure you have a half inch bite so the wood doesn't splinter). Then lift the top of your wall up.

You can also swing a second hammer on the backside of the board to counteract the driving nail... timed to the hit.

This is making me think of when my friend and I were starting a "treehouse" when we were around 9 years old. We pretty much started off the same. When her dad saw what we were up to, he came to help us do it proper. It went around the the tree on the ground, but I think we did well for a couple of little girls with no knowledge.

I'm a city boy from NYC, who STILL lives in NYC and has never built anything bigger than a birdhouse in my life. I know it's NOT easy but you and Brooke make it look so. It's a solid video when someone like me is looking at it and seeing the logic as to why and how certain elements are done the way they are. You do an excellent job explaining things. I didn't intend on watching the whole thing from start to finish, but I DID.

If you mess up you just take out the nails and fix it. If something's cut wrong or unlevel you just fix it. Measure twice cut once.

A crazy amount of views (705k) for 5 days considering the topic. But do u know why so many others watched this video also? Here's my educated guess. Over 20 years ago on PBS, there was/is a show called This Old House. Well, the host, Bob Vila, built a screen door in about 2 min; and it just so happens a man name David Lerterman, host of Late Night With David Letterman was so astonished by how fast Bob built it that he commented heavily on it. Shortly after that, Bob appeared on the DL show. And this is my theory: it took a little while, but after that broadcast, and with the rise of cable tv, we now have all these rehab shows. It all kinda took off. Do u watch rehab house shows as so many do? If so, between the bird box and the rippling affect of the DL episode, I'd like to suggest, it was why u and other unsuspecting viewers spent 28:38 watching this video.
If I'm wrong, it is because I am operating under such limited knowledge of you. After all, the only things I know about u is that u are articulate, logical, u built a bird box and u were intrigued enough to watch the entire video and comment on it. Oh, and ur from NYC. (This is how conspiracy theories ,begin - right?)Either way, statistically speaking, it must apply to a certain percentage of the viewers.

I was taught that the kraft paper vapor barrier in fiberglass batts goes against the colder surface, so in your floor, the batts were upside-down. Also, I was also taught that framing uses nails because they bend but don't break when the structure flexes during seasonal temperature variations, but for non-structural applications such as sub-flooring, screws are perfectly acceptable.
And the beams should be on top of the posts, not nailed to the side. As it is, the nails are bearing weight that should be resting on the posts.
Anybody else recognize this couple from the show "Alone"? So happy to see them again. Their abilities are incredible. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see their channel. They would be experts with a camera after filming that show and they so much knowledge they can teach people.

I think I commented years ago when I first watched this. But it’s worth another comment. Dave, you make those of us that have never built a building feel very empowered to build. Years back, we built a small 2 story house with 2 x 6 frame and T111.
Building the upper walls on the 2nd floor and then standing it up in place was nerve racking for sure - one chance to do it right to make sure it doesn’t slide right off - crazy heavy too.
It is so amazing that you have a wife who can be just as involved in the construction process as you. That’s really fun to watch.
I helped my dad build our cabin at the lake years ago, now I am going to try to build my own, and these guys have tons of good pointers.

You need to cut the branches as close to the tree as possible. When I was younger I was helping my dad trim our tree. A county extension agent that lived in the neighborhood was driving by and stopped. He gave us a quick school on tree trimming. The closer you trim the branch the quicker the tree can heal the wound. I’m forever thankful for the instructions we were given that day which was about 50 years ago 😎

i’m so glad you put this stuff online. i’ve always felt this way about building, but there seems to be almost an intentional obfuscation of the process. like when you ask specific questions people almost want to say “you don’t need to know how to do that, you’re not going to be a carpenter.” they only want to explain it if you’re going to make a living off it. i’m not going to be a carpenter, that work doesn’t appeal to me, but i do live in houses like everyone else, and someday i would love to build something like this just for myself, maybe with a friend or partner.
This is my second video of yours I watched with the first being the newest one (Off Grid Cabin in the Woods... Start to Finish) I couldn't believe that someone could build a cabin so easily. In this video you said you've been doing it for 20 years and it shows. You got it down to a science. Great videos for me as a novice to watch and not feel too overwhelmed.

Might just be some truth to it. My wife and I did build our own house with help from family, but it sure is a bigger task than you realize going into it. Spent many evenings staring up at the ceiling (18' vaulted) and wondering just what I'd gotten myself into and whether I had the steam left to finish what I'd started. That was 10yrs ago and we've been building memories (and a garage, and a cabin in the back) ever since. Never know until you give it a shot.
I have no proof of the DNA part of it, but I grew up on a farm back in the 50s and we ( us kids including neighbors from other farms) worked with our fathers and uncles and other friends of the community building all sorts of things. We had tree houses that could sleep 8 or so and were taught how to plant crop, raise just about any farm or ranch animal, along with hunting and trapping. At 8 I was tilling a fairly large field and helping my dad build all sorts of buildings. After my stint in the army I started laboring with concrete, block, laying water and sewer, and just about every kind of carpentry. Back when I was in school we had shop classes, where we were taught how to work with all kinds of different tools from wood to metal, and rock like marble and even car engines, I remember getting my hunting permit back then also. So sorry to ramble but some of us older vets tend to do that, my point minus the walk down memory lane is that I think that if kids were brought up around men that would mentor them, I think they would find that working with your hands (and mind) gives a person a kind of satisfaction that improves their overall well being. But then I just love to build. And for those that might say that hard labor is a non starter... Well I guess I would only mention that before i was released from the Army I spent eight and a half months in Letterman army hospital being put back together, was sent back to my unit to finish the last six months of my tour. And with a leg brace and crutches was sent back home. It was a different time back then so when my claim for disability was denied I did what most guys back then did, I took the time from unemployment to heal up enough to work and did just that and through all of it God blessed me with a never quit attitude and a beautiful bride that has been by my side for 38 years. All that to say that I'm a very blessed man, and am looking for land to build our dream home. Blessings

Hi Dave, and Brooke, this video was the first I saw of you. It made me believe that we could do it too. So that was the beginning of our adventure in Europe.
We sold our house in the Netherlands and bought about 4 acres in France with an old house and only electricity.
Some forest and pasture for the horses.
And a little stream in the middle.
I go out every day and I am so happy 😉 .

Metal roof tip ,drill and nail through the top of the ridges ,use roofing nails with rubber washers.The water will run off the edges.If you nail on flat surfaces water will pool around nail heads and leaks will develop.
Keep a metal roof clean of rust and painted, it will last forever.
you can buy colored screws with silicone washers to match pretty much if not every variety of metal roof you can find. Then clear silicone over those and water shouldn't ever be able to find its way in. with a 1 or 2 pitch like this you really don't have any other option as water would seep in between the shingles of a roof with a pitch like this.

I wish I had seen your video about a yr and a half ago...that was when I started building a 12ft x 24ft barn for my goats by myself. But you built your house in a similar way that I built my barn, which is finished except for the second set of 4 stalls. It isn't finished on the inside walls - just the studs to give the goats more usable space. I did put in 6- 24 x 30 inch windows. Great job and it is amazing the amount of work the 2 of you accomplished each day! As it was, I built it all by myself - not bad for a 66 year old woman who had no building experience! And the goats love their stalls.Thank goodness for battery powered drills, hammer drills and circular saws.
Thx for the education on the hand saw sharpening demonstration. I have 2 of those saws from my grandpa and didn't recognize the handle butts both ways, so its meant to saw like that(backhand). Also have that tool to bend the teeth and never knew what it was. Thanks again

I agree!! it would have totally tied the wall and floor assemblies together.
It would have been OK for the back wall.....but there would have been a joint in the front wall being a full 8' over the floor.

For those of us who are learning, are you talking about 16:34 on the video? When they built the walls, leave the paneling longer on the bottom then cut it after it's up??

Thank your for your encouragement! I had a bad day at work and my husband and I are so stressed. We want to move away from the city and buy our own land for our family with two kids and live an easier life. We will do that next march and till then your videos will help me through depression!
My grandparents built their house up near Bailey Colorado during the depression. The house is still stand today. You are absolutely right about building our own homes. It's in our DNA. Love your channel!
My compliments to the two of you. When I started setting up in the middle of nowhere, the single, one things we got "the pros" to do, was our cabin. It cost a lot, too much, was half-assed and many flaws still exist that keep me busy. It cost a lot, really a lot for what we got. I watch this, and I can't help but feel ashamed that I did not build at least the beginning of our own home. We are probably going to do that anyway, and move into it. I am a 75 year old single woman farmer. Yes, you can do it. What you need to do is think things through first, look for other ways to get around the concepts and ways of doing things that men have created. As an example. a 4x6x8 or 12 is very heavy. Instead use 3 - 2x4's. Put one in, then another, then the last, all snuggled together. I am still building, and without help.

It looks like a great location for this project. The finish on your exterior panelling is similar to how my grandfather, in the early 50's built a lakeside cabin 24 feet square and finished the cedar siding with linseed oil and lamp black. The story goes that a neighbour about a mile away heard the hammering and came over with a hammer to help with the construction.
Came here just to watch a little cabin get built. Was not expecting to learn a new use for a carpenter's hammer at 8:06

While acknowledging the Kool-Aid aspect here, I've been doing many things on a smaller scale with foam flooring as prototypes, the puzzle-piece 2' x 2's people exercise on. Amazing stuff.
