  • Hey guys! Today I am sharing with you all the things that have been working for toddler discipline in my house. The terrible two's were not really a thing, but the terrible 3's were haha. What works for you all with your toddlers?! We were going through some serious toddler tantrums and hitting over here. I swear by reading and researching, it has helped me so much become a better mommy to Sydney & in turn she is much better behaved. Structure, praise and staying very calm has been incredible. I was so touched by how you calm down your daughter when she is trying to hit somebody. I think you give her with this technique also a beautiful strong inner voice for her future.

I've read part of that book and definitely like a lot of the ideas and the ones you talked about! I read this quote once where it said that it's our job as parents to be the calm amidst their chaos and that's been the biggest thing for me. Once we establish the boundaries (which makes them feel safe), we can just enforce them in a matter of fact and neutral way without big emotional reactions (as best as we can) so then they don't feel shamed they just understand that this behavior = this consequence. And totally agree with the loving on them and quality time and praising them! All they want is our love, attention, to make us proud, and to feel safe!

What has helped me is researching my child’s zodiac sign lol. Knowing he is different from me . Not pushing him in certain situations etc etc . Learning about his sign(s) has helped me see things more from his perspective and relate to him in a different way.

Forever a supporter of your channel. Love how you discipline her. My 2 year old, Arabella will be 3 in June and I've started doing similar discipline like time put for her. I'm made a "Q&A TAG" video and you're one of the TH-cam Mamas I tagged. I hope that's ok! I will be uploading Thursday!

Also I wasnt able to finish the entire video at the time I commented earlier, but I wanted to add that your comment about them hitting because of fear totally hits home for me and I never ever thought about it like that before. But I wonder if her dad and i's separation and the toxic environment we were in before we left is making her act out now! She too, hits and does those things and I'm like you where I get very frustrated and i dont understand. But now I'm absolutely going to try your tactic and tell her shes safe and that its okay. I think my daughter is so similar too in the fact that she also really likes her space and doesnt always want people super close to her and I feel that's when she hits the most! It totally made me think for a second. Thank you so much Hayley this was so useful!!! ❤

We have been going through a lot of the same (my daughter makes 3 tomorrow) I’ve found so many things from the “positive parenting” perspective so helpful. “Giving her 2 choices” then if she can’t decide in a timely manner, she knows I decide for her, etc (this is mostly helpful at meal time when she has choices - basically just breakfast time) Love these tips, thanks for sharing!

I had my toddler ask to bring a toy grocery shopping cart to the grocery store this thing was huge. I gave in and he took it inside the store 😵 yes it was embarrassing and I got funny looks but he was so happy and it was a drama free shipping trip. Something that's not important to us means so much to them. I've learned to redirect a lot. I don't do time outs or yell. I do... Do overs it's explaining with they did and giving them a second chance to do the right thing.

Yes, pretty much all kids act out more in front of others. Most of my experiences have been that they want the attention on them. Yes, removing did help us in the sort term, but the action that solves our problem has been acknowledging that they want to be included . They are getting older where they have thoughts and ideas that they want to express. I usually, like you said ..get on her level, validating her feelings, helping her to understand your rule is firm or help her problem solve. In a social situation I ask her when she does an undesirable behavior.."Do you want my attention? " Then, I tell her desirable ways she can get my attention..like asking " Use your words please "..at first you have to model.
I don't do time out really. But she has a safe space that she goes to that has calm down methods, a pillow and blanket in a tent, social stories, puppets to retell what happened.
I 100% agree with your method of calming her during strong emotions. We do that as well.
Our three " rules" are that she has to be safe, kind, and .respectful.
    - kicking toys..."We are kind and respectful respectful ." I try to always state the action I want to see instead stating what she did do. If she persists remove either her or the item. I say I can't let you play here/ with this toy because you are not being kind and respectful. We are kind and respectful when we take care of our toys. I set a timer and set her in either safe place to calm or a quiet activity until the timer goes off and I can talk to her again and remind her of our rules/ have her repeat. If it happens again she loses it for the day.
I really like this video..I feel like what you have researched is largely what I was taught in teaching Headstart.

This was a great video! I’m the mother of 3 kids under 5 years old. I really struggle with being consistent cause it’s crazy in my home. My 3 year old was diagnosed with adhd and hyperactivity. She hits and throws, and she also laughs about it. It’s hard to be on point with routines. It’s really the hardest time of my life. My 4.5 year old has autism. He’s a lot easier than her and is very smart and bright, but them two together are toxic! They are screamers and it hurts my ears. They don’t stop if I tell them to. They don’t listen to the “indoor voices” and they also can be aggressive with each other. And then I have my sweet 1 year old who watches all the chaos. I just struggle because it’s 1 vs 3. I feel like if I would have spaces them out it would have been easier. I had them all in my 30s. I’m going to try and be consistent and follow your tips.

You are so right. The 3s are generally way worse than the 2s. I think people with 2 year olds lost track of their birthdays when the stubbornness and tantrums started and that's how it got named the Terrible Twos. It is more like the dominating 3s, oppositional 3s, stubborn 3s. It is a tough age to parent so that you can live with them and they grow into people that other folks can bear to be around. We have all known those who never had anything expected of them, who got their way all the time, who don't care to read anyone else's needs or moods because they will get their way come hell or high water. These people do not end up with happy school or work lives or with friends who are not also manipulating users. Letting them know that you and your belongings are not their personal property to do with as they please; some things are for adults. It's the new frontier of boundaries because one must be teaching those from infancy for them to feel secure. Deep down they do not want or need to get their way all the time. They do not have the capacity at all to know how their choices will affect their futures nor can they even imagine their futures. So it is our job to give them their choices and they need to learn to pick one when choices can be offered. It is what humans do with our brains. We all have different choices now than we did a month or two ago. To survive and perhaps even thrive, we must adapt. Our choices have shrunk. The toddler's choices must be quite limited and clear, like a nap or quiet time in the bedroom until someone gets them out. That's it. They pick one or the other or a bit of both. Calm, structure, and praise when warranted are so important. Fake praise over everything, like blowing her nose, devalues earned praise later. Picking your battles within any given day is so important. They do now and then need to get their way on something, partially so they can learn how to ask for it and present it to you. Yes, you have to be on their level, looking them in the eye, and alone with them, so it's between the two of you. It's a big deal to state what you expect, instead of phrasing it like it's a choice via a question. Also, speaking of yourself in the first person is important. Third person is a bad habit. You can use proper adult English while using words she understands at her tender age. It gives her agency over her own life to know what the boundaries and punishments will be.

Wow does this video hit home. My 2 year old is really into hitting mommy. His tantrums stem from having to do something he doesn't want (changing a diaper)I think it's all about asserting control over his world. I know discipline is really tough no matter what age. I'm currently trying to teach my son how to breathe deeply but that's a hard skill to do when worked up, so we try it a lot when he's calm.

Emily Shannon I’ve been there so many times Mama 😩 It is exhausting & embarrassing. Try to have a chat before going into the store & let them know what you expect from them behavior wise. Give them lots of attention & let them help as much as possible. Bring snacks to keep them busy. Keep your cool as much as possible. It will pass 🙏💪❤️ Lord give us strength haha

@@TresChicMama- thank you so much! I've been watching u since u were doing what's in my hospital bag videos! Lol. My lil one and Sydney are very close in age and honestly was so incredibly happy when you first started the the discipline videos. Thank you so much for your courage to put everything out there that has to do with being a mom period. Single mom life was not what we dreamed about when our buns were in the oven cooking, but this is and has been our reality! Again thank you!

Wow! So interesting about the hitting part because I always wondered why she hits me only. Some lady who is not my friend said, she must’ve learned that from home. That pissed me off, yes, lady I hit my husband all the time! 🤣 What a dumb broad. I absolutely do not believe in hitting; So it was a big mystery until now. I’m going to use this method. This video was really awesome! My daughter is about to be 2 years old and I am my mothers only child, so I am super clueless. Thank you thank you!💙💙💙

Blind Housewife This was me too! I was like ok it can’t be learned because I certainly do not hit my child & we don’t watch aggressive tv or anything. It was an ah ha moment when I read that. I hope it helps your little one too 🤗❤️🙏

I hear that at every age! haha! I think every 6 months is a new phase for my 3 year old but some things get better while others get worse... so for us it’s kinda of evened out once she got past the 1.5 year mark!

@@TresChicMama explain before you go that where your going thats she ok you be with her .let her take her favorite doll. My granddaughter had it bad we thought it was tantrums. To them everything is twice as big and scary. its mind blowing but most stuff they see they never have saw. Most words they don't understand. And sometimes we honestly forget that.So Walmart could literally be terrifying and overwhelming to much at one time. I always said their should be restaurants for kids. Some place you can teach them how to behave in certain places and let them get use to eating out. This might sound crazy but explain to her if your mad or scared clap your hands sometimes they dont know how express themselves either. This will cut down on tantrums to. And 4 or 5 they stop. We are taught to breathe deep when we are mad but their to little to understand so let her do bubbles when shes upset it helps her breathe . LoL this is from years of experience hang in their it get better. Well to get teenager. Thats why its important train right now
