    Can't imagine that lack of shims is gonna hold up once some flower pots are sitting on there. No one is standing on it, but lots of us put fairly heavy things on window sills. This is the kind of work that makes people hate track homes.
    Good tips on lining it up and measuring it.

    • @wty1313
      @wty1313 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Although I would use shims, the apron likely provides sufficient support much like a riser supports a stair tread.

    • @SplashJohn
      @SplashJohn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Agreed. I can't blame this guy for following the guidelines of his employer, but for him to casually justify his method by saying "Nobody is standing on these things" is lame and misleading. Everybody puts stuff on windowsills -- that's what they're for. The apron will probably keep the front edge up, but the back edge (against the window frame) will slip down on the brads once the caulk line gives way, and that won't take long after somebody moves in. Liners and casings don't need much fastening strength; sills do.

    • @snmm1029
      @snmm1029 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My thoughts exactly. I have cats that love sitting in the window and can definitely imagine them making the sill move. No person may be standing on the sill but a pet probably will, so shims should be used.

    Thank you! My home came with (zero) windowsills in any of the windows. It was built in 1980, so maybe it was a budget skip for the previous owner (I have found ALOT of these) or it might have been out of style at the time? Either way, I want to add them so this tutorial is excellent and makes total sense!

      I can totally agree with you! All my material packs for these “track” homebuilders are always MDF for window sills. With a good finish of paint they seem to hold up “decently” for a few years, but yes if you can afford just a little more going wood is much better! Thanks for commenting! Have a blessed day 😎

    Good job Hunter 👌🏼👍🏻
    I also do trim work, I do it in Portland Oregon. You are doing great, I like your approach to work. I usually put window sill along the bottom edge of the window. That is, with a window frame thickness of 1 1/2 ", we get a reveal of about 3/4", depending on the thickness of the window sill material.
    Thanks!

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really appreciate you leaving some feedback! Some of the windows in the homes I’m in vary on the frame thicknesses. Also the framing isn’t perfect so we have decided as a trim company to just give a standard reveal in every single window. Thus leading to a smaller reveal than 3/4”… if it was my personal home I would be matching the reveal on all 4 sides of the window, but I would have more control over the drywall or jamb extensions to do so… don’t have that time or luxury in the track homes with DR Horton unfortunately.
      Thank you for your inspiration, look forward to more comments in the future! Have a blessed day 😎

You would want to add the width of your trim and an additional 1/2” (I personally want to see the stool wider than the casing) Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jamb extending and casing for windows, just the stool and apron. But I will get some footage the next time I get the chance! Thank you for your support and hope this helps! If you have more questions I’ll get back to you faster! Have a blessed day 😎

    Our house is getting built in Castle Rock and to add the window sills like this was a $3,800 upgrade for 6 Windows. I think I might just try to do it myself after watching the video. Thanks! BTW, do you do this type of work on the side or only work for DR Horton? Would love a contact to do this type of stuff and pay them if I get pissed when doing them myself lol

      Hey Pat! Congrats on the new home! Yea the upgrades in trim get pretty pricey through the builder! When the time comes that you are ready for some extras in the home reach out to me again! I’ll be glad to help answer any questions and if the timing is right, maybe I’ll have some time in my schedule. I’m currently not working for DR anymore and just doing small odds and ends to keep busy. Thanks for watching and commenting! Look forward to you reaching out in the future! Have a blessed day 😎

    Isn't it a little fragile whiteout something in the window side to hold it up? Great video, straight to the point and good manufacturing

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! The back edge of the sill is held up by the nails and caulking from the painter…it might seem fragile, but you should be able to place any picture or plant or whatever you store on the sill and have no problem. The only thing I change is a window sill where a person can get in and out of…(egress window in basement, a window that accesses the roof, etc.) in this case I will use shims to secure the window sill in case some ends up stepping on the sill…
      Might seem a little fragile from the video how it is installed, but I assure you it is strong enough to hold whatever can be stacked on top, just not strong enough for a step 😉
      Thank you for your time, any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day 😎

    Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I've recently took off and old plastic window sill and it looks like it was put on some sort of adhesive, i need to put it back but do you know what I can use to secure it in place? I don't think nails would do in this case :D Also why do you leave that gap underneath the wood (where you put your screwdriver)? Thanks :)

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  ปีที่แล้ว

      For your plastic material I would use an adhesive like Liquid Nail. You may have to buy a caulking gun as well if you don’t already have one. Place a decent amount of adhesive on your plastic sill and place it into position, then press down firmly to smoosh the adhesive and let sit for a few hours to dry.
      If I nailed the sill material to the framing and didn’t leave any gap, my reveal from the sill material and the window frame wouldn’t be consistent in every window of the house. My focus is to keep the reveal the same at every window, so the gap left underneath changes from window to window. I hope that makes sense…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

    Help!. I like the video and explanations, but I'll be installing stained and finished boards and can't just throw in a bunch of nails wherever.
    What nails and nailing tool should I use on true 1" (5/4) boards that have been carefully stained and finished.
    Any suggestions appreciated. Thx

    Well done, I am reluctant to use MDF on a window sill. always afraid of moisture. Ever have any issues with MDF getting wet?

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I’ve had issues where my window sill/stool didnt get painted and got wet from a rain storm and had to replace it from swelling…but I have never had an issue when the MDF is fully caulked and painted. The paint does a great job repelling the water. Let’s say there is standing water over a period of time like under a flower pot or something it could eventually eat through the paint and damage the product…this could also damage wood and both would need to be sanded and re-finished. Just my opinion, I’m sure others will say to never use MDF, but I don’t make the product decisions when it comes to these builders. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

      That looked like what's called a "beading" bit. Most likely with a 1/2" reveal on the center part of the wood.

    This is awesome. Thank you! Our new home is being built without window sills and aprons. Shocking to me but we will for sure get someone to install after we close. Any advice on how much to expect to spend to have this done on a 2,700 sq ft home?

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for watching and your comment! Don’t be toooooo shocked, many home builders in the Denver area are just drywall wrapping each window as well. I totally agree with you to getting it done, certain carpentry in the home can bring a totally different feel or emotion when entering a room. I know it’s just a window “sill” or “stool” but it does help the look of each window!
      Prices will totally vary depending on where you live, but I’ll give you the best estimate or guess based on your quick information...
      20-25 total windows
      1”x 8”x16’ MDF material - 5-7 pieces
      Casing to match your doors for apron
      1.5 days labor (2 guys- 3/4 day)
      Demo drywall add .5 to labor (only if material is thicker than the reveal on the window from the drywall)
      My bid would be $1200 (material included) or $1500 to demo drywall from each window...
      After you will need to hire a painter to caulk, fill nail holes, primer, paint...I’m “ball-parking” here but maybe expect $600-$800 for the painter to finish the project...
      Hope this information helps! Please let me know if there is anything other questions! Congrats on the new home! Have a blessed day! 😎

      @@huntercarlson5446 You're incredible. Thank you for your time. We're north of Atlanta and bought our current starter home as a new build 7 years ago and it has all the trim and details I'd expect to see in a home, so now "upgrading" to a larger home that comes with virtually no design features is a hard pill to swallow. I'm learning now what this whole "express" home thing is all about. I can only hope and pray the guys working on our new home care as much about the quality of their work as you do about yours. Kudos to you and best wishes in all your endeavors!

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really appreciate that! I do take a lot of pride in my work and push to do the best that I can! You hit the nail on the head with “express”...it’s definitely a new way to build these homes to try and keep the price point affordable. Takes away from some design features, but it still gives the opportunity to upgrade in size! Im sure the workers in your home are gonna crush it and I truly hope the process is peaceful, exciting, and easy! Look forward to hearing from you again! Happy Easter! Hope you get some time with the family this weekend!

    Great video - prescriptive instructions and very engaging host. 1 question is what to do with the sides of the apron - the edges seem like they would be sharp. Do you add sides to the apron like a joint or just paint over them as-is?

    • @huntercarlson5446
      @huntercarlson5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for watching and commenting! In this case I will leave the apron ends as is and the painter will caulk and paint everything. The edges aren’t really sharp after paint is applied, but great question. I’m just following the builders specs…some aprons do have actual returns or a 45 degree miter to match the detail on the ends, but in this case the builder just wants a 15 degree miter on the ends. Have a blessed day 😎
