  • DAVE KNOWS that King's Road Style is one of wrestling's best. It may not be as popular as WWE or New Japan's Strong Style, but All Japan Pro Wrestling and King's Road is something amazing all unto itself. And people should be paying more attention to it. So in this video, I explore the history, the differences and what makes King's Road Style wrestling, not just an amazing form of Japanese Pro Wrestling, but a great form of Professional Wrestling.

    • @zakrowe1301
      @zakrowe1301 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      maurice alexander, glad to see people interested in joshi puro. I hope Dave does a video on this as well
      Joshi puroresus' initial influences where from the traditional womens style of wrestling of the 50s/60s. mixed with traditional Japanese wrestling and over time it evolved and started to develop its own identity, with influences from a wide range of wrestling including lucha libre, southern Style wrasslin, WWEs entertainment style, as well as Japans male wrestling scene. it became some of the most hard hitting, fast paced and innovative wrestling on the planet, pageantry played a huge factor in joshi puroresu Especially during 90s, they also had a lot of heart which helped keep you invested . I'd say the women went that extra mile in an effort to gain and maintain respect in what was and still is a male dominated industry and to prove a point.
      For the longest time AJW was the only viable women's promotion in Japan, opened in the 60s by the matsunaga brothers in a lot of ways they where ahead of their time in how they'd promote their women and getting their brand out there and going beyond just wrestling to do it. They where very much on the same page as Vince McMahon jr. In that regard as a lot of the women also had music careers, with the crush gals probably being the most successful and being a massive part of Japanese pop culture during the 80s.
      Joshi puro suffered a lot heading into the new millennium, I don't really know why, it hasn't recovered since. At one point AJW used to run the Tokyo dome, now stardom is the largest joshi promotion and they're glad to get 1500 in korakuen. the talent is there, they've got the drive, they've got women that could be really big stars but it's probably the most niche sub genre of wrestling their is these days and it makes me sad to know that people don't have an intrest or an appreciation for it any more, hopefully that can one day change

    • @zakrowe1301
      @zakrowe1301 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roy Rogers yes I agree, and that is an interesting thought. I think while more people are aware of stardom and joshi puro in general, I wonder how many of them sign up for stardom world or are even seeking other promotions and finding ways to watch them? I thinks it's more a case of they see someone like kairi hojo come into NXT, they get interested in her background and find out what stardom is but it doesn't go any further than that,

    I spent thousands of hours watching AJPW 90s stuff and I was only told by the internet fans that each match had a lot of story threads, but without being able to speak Japanese and understand the commentary, this might not be so apparent to newer viewers. However, over time you start to notice all the call backs and progressions from match to match in a storytelling sense. It's so deep. Here are two perfect matches to compare how one logically led to the other: Misawa/Kobashi vs Kawada/Taue 6-9-95 and a rematch on 10-15-95. The second match begins with the tactics used to finish the prior, and they pretty much play like one long saga.

    @dd-579fletcherwillyd.9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    One really great story IMO that was King's Road product is Kenta Kobashi's saga
    Dude was a tank that fought hard to get into the AJ dojo, took 63 L's starting from his debut before winning a singles match, constantly loses (initially) to his peers (Misawa, Hansen, Taue, Kawada, etc.), and is usually the one getting beat up in tag team bouts (partnering with Misawa/Kawada), but later on, he would beat them and even won the Triple Crown 3 times in legendary bouts, and becomes the "big brother veteran" (who finishes the match) when partnered with rookies like Akiyama. And when he joined NOAH, he would ultimately win the GHC Heavyweight belt by defeating Misawa in a 5-star epic, hold it for 700+ days, and even after losing it, still be a huge legend, EVEN FUCKING BESTING CANCER BY LIKE, IDK BURNING HAMMER THE SHIT OUT OF IT, and becoming, in the end, one of (if not the) greatest wrestling babyfaces. And even IRL, he was a kind Gigachad of a man, despite his huge tanking structure. He smiles genuinely and you can just feel his positive aura amongst you.
    And I mean, God, his theme songs reflect it. On the first time (Sniper) you can feel the underdog still on his getting-kicked-around phase, then on the next (Grand Sword V1), it's like the underdog finally gaining legendary W's, and the last, iconic rendition (Grand Sword V2), the "anime hero's ultimate form" vibes are there, and you see him become the top dog bearing the torch. Also come on, I personally get pumped up when the beat hits while lifting at the gym, TBH. Plus the chants, bro I really can just hear 50% of the music cus the other half's just ppl shouting "KO-BA-SHI!"
    P.S. Sorry smh I just really love Kobashi's etire saga and career hehe

    Pleasantly surprised at the quality of this explanation and for the strong style vid as well. Most american fans just equate the japanese styles to mean"they hit each other really hard and work really stiff." The booking philosophy and where two opponents stand against each other "rank" wise was a huge component in match structure and all the finisher business. Ajpw had a clear ladder which made all the critical matches feel like a battle for supremacy to see who would get to go up another step or defend their turf. Ajpw 90s is the epitome of presenting prowrestling as sport. No frills, no spectacle.

    Great video. If you do a supplementary video (maybe you already have and I just haven't seen it), I'd suggest addressing one to four other things: 1) How Baba's decision to go to an all-clean-finishes format helped to elevate the quality and significance of the style; 2) How the Jumbo-Tenryu series REALLY boosted the expectations for what a main-event match was supposed to resemble, not just in All Japan, but in Puroresu in general; 3) How the combination of those factors contributed to the elevation of Misawa and others, because when the torch was passed to them, it was passed to them through clean finishes in grueling matches; 4) How the (arguable) abuse of the style may have led to the decline and/or death of some of its best practitioners, including Misawa (death), Kobashi (nerve damage) and Takayama (a stroke in 2004 even before he was paralyzed). Thanks!

      Mitsuharu Misawa is the man to watch. Classic matches against Tashiaki Kawada, Kenta Kobashi and a bunch of others. I will forever love New Japan Pro but 1990’s/early 2000’s, All-Japan was superior. Also watch early Pro Wrestling NOAH, which is the promotion that Mistuharu Misawa created once he left All-Japan after the death of Giant Baba. Most of the All Japan roster followed Misawa to NOAH.

    King's Road Style sounds interesting. I'll need to find out where I can see old All Japan content to maybe get into it.
    Another thing that caught my attention was the description. It sounds really similar to how a lot of martial art/battle shounen anime approach fights. I'm a little curious if King's Road (and pro wrestling in general) was an influence for that, or whether it's just a coincidence because of the logical nature of the storytelling/similar examples in martial art movies.

I ended up importing Fire Pro Wrestling G from Japan and wanted to learn all about these wrestlers and promotions I had never heard of. Everybody told me if I wanted to get into Puroresu to get Misawa, Kawada and Kobashi tapes. So I ended up buying tape sets online and I have never looked back. King's Road made me love wrestling again. No talking on the mic, no ridiculous skits, no sports entertainment. Just Pro Wrestling in it's most purest form.

Kawada is soo good at selling,that when he sells a move,he somehow makes him and his opponent look tough.

    Excellent and concise definition of what the King's Road is all about. The only drawback I can see to it is just how perfect things need to go (mostly in terms of wrestler health) for this form of super-long-term storytelling.
    But when you think about the storytelling we not only got in AJPW but in the early years of Pro Wrestling NOAH (Jun Akiyama vs. Kenta Kobashi at Departure 2004, for example), I'm a believer in the King's Road. To me, that's what pro wrestling is all about: telling stories and making people forget that what they are seeing is scripted.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to many styles I think it has to work just right and it has to work for the promotion that it's being used in. Like Strong Style, if you did that in an American company and your opponent wasn't aware of it, you would be considered stiff. But when everyone is expecting it to go that way, then there's no problem. KR is a cog in a machine that is AJPW. And only when all the pieces fit together does it work, same as any other company. Styles often need to be a bigger part of the whole.

It's just that people might get confused with the sentence "King's Road tends to maintain more of a catch as catch can mentality and less shoot style", when the main foundation of shoot style is in fact catch as can with martial arts strikes, so I figured I'd point it out :-).

    I'm finding that I prefer King's Road style overall, because I love the working holds, setting up big moves, and trading signature moves that the style has, and the storytelling aspect is great with no shit booking. The Gaijin wrestlers helped evolve the style and gave it more of an international flavor, and you really got the sense that everyone who wrestled there thought they were the best, and wanted to prove it.
