- DAVE KNOWS that a Wrestling Match has many elements to it, whether it's in WWE, NJPW or AEW. And breaking down what specifically happens in wrestling can be a very useful approach to better understanding how the magic happens. So I made a video highlighting seven elements that I think are important to making a wrestling match possible. And going forward, this will give you something to look for the next time you see a wrestling match.

This channel is the most Underrated Internet Pro-Wrestling Channel.
Thank you so much for thinking so. Just hopes word spreads and thank you for being here
Oh it's TRUE, its Damn True.
that's because he doesn't clickbait and uses drama like other wrestling channels
Additional note: the way a wrestler knows when it's time to end the match or "go home" is when the soma's start kicking in.
Signaling the go home is a very important part of a match too, you are right
This is the wrestling content we need. Not just videos on wrestling news and rumours. Been subscribed since your Zack Ryder vid with Zane but have recently given your channel the proper respect it truly deserves.
Hey thanks so much for the props. Glad to have you on board
I thought I knew my wrestling history, till Dave taught me more than I already knew.
Excellent channel keep uo the great content
Thank you so much for saying so
WWE wrestling achieves the best synthesis of these elements being one excellence. I'm referring to Main Roster. Counterwise they have big problems with talent's over exposition, unoriginality of booking, soft hitting moves due to safety and obnoxious crowds.
I saw on YT one old wrestling seminar from Samoa Joe where he was insisting a lot on creating separation. It opened my mind about this technical aspect of wrestling
Yes, separation a very often overlooked aspect of a match
Another great vid helping explain wrestling and how there more to it than most know this is why it's my fav channel 😎🤘
Thank you so much for the support. Glad to let ppl know more about what does into wrestling
Nice offspring reference
6:34 that's the suicide dive for sure, like people over use it, and in NJPW it's like mandatory ,u don't have a match where one of the characters doesn't do a suicide dive
I feel that it's that way in WWE too
Your welcome dude love the video and thanks 4 the shought out
running the ropes is what I like to call a "narrative dissonance".
If you take it out of context it makes no sense but when you see/read it in context you don't notice it.
very good term use
The rest hold part, and the discussion on a rest hold occasionally ending a match reminded me of a discussion I once had, where a person was asking if a non-title match on Raw had ended too fast, when the champion started tapping instantly when put in the hold. I remember thinking, from a kayfabe standpoint, it is would make more sense for the champion to tap quickly in a non-title match, as the belt isn't on the line, and there's no reason to injure one's self just to win a match that's not going to affect the wrestler's title reign.
I digress though. Really good, and fascinating video.
I do understand what you mean. And I think cowardly heels should definitely do that. However, I have been told of a WWE mandate that wrestlers must always represent a desire to win no matter what.
For me
Spots
Wrestlers that work together perfect
Story telling
Long term out come
Communication
Good announcing
Good crowd
No interference
after 70+ years of following pro wrestling, though i don't follow wwe or other tv shows, i believe dave does know wrestling.
Thank you very much. High praise and you sure must have experience some great stuff
Thanks for backing me up - I'm convinced that 90% of all dives are excessive.
And thank you for backing me up.. I feel ya on that
Diving out the ring is beyond overused at this point
Great video
Thanks!
Not all matches end. Remember when Curtis Axel was in The Royal Rumble for 364 days? lol
No, no Arthur... it's your stupidity that has no end
@@DaveKnowsWrestling Oh yeah like that wasn't one of your favorite things in wrestling all year?
I’d like to add three more things to your list 1) Stalling for time 2) Psychology and 3) Timing
All good measures too
"You gotta keep em separated" I see what you did there.
Bit different to what I thought it was gonna be, thought it was gonna be more like the story parts of a match, such as shine and heat. Cool video. :)
Additionally: uh I hate it when people run the ropes weakly! Looks so bad. Don't they realize it's actually less energy-sapping when you throw your full weight into it? They really do bounce you off if you hit them properly. It's quite fun actually. Plus I like it when wrestlers occasionally manage to "apply the brakes", so-to-speak. Essentially conveys a level of cunning.
Hey I can def have plans to talk about those too. And yes, proper rope running matters. Commit to it!
I like this. So based on this, what would you say is the last match you have a 5 star rating to? Or an A.
Dave I was curious as to your opinion of comedy wrestling and it’s place on the card. Considering the recent popularity of Luchasaurus and Orange Cassidy, do you think a comedy gimmick could or should be the “top guy”?
I have already covered that topic in a previous video
Right on, I wasn’t aware ( and I honestly thought I had seen them all.🤣) Thanks for responding. This is quickly becoming my favorite wrestling/comic related channel
What it really comes down to is the storyline, wrestling moves are just a bonus. Who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy? Why are they fighting? What happens if wrestler A wins and wrestler B loses? Without these questions answered it doesn't matter how many moves they do, a casual viewer will be put to sleep by any match if he doesn't know these things. That is why in ring storytelling and commentators are so important and that is why wrestling has been in a massive downfall for years now. Because there are no good commentators anymore and because wrestlers themselves think wrestling moves is all that matters. Hogan vs Andre is without a doubt the most iconic wrestling match of all time. Nobody remembers that the match was technically a snoozefest, everyone remembers that match as an all time classic because of the above 4 questions.
Facts
Hey dave sir is us Championship secondary championship or tertiary championship, what I really want to know if it is secondary then how do grand slam exists as it is p, s, T, tag team
It is CONSIDERED by WWE to be a secondary title, at least for now. It's hard to believe it, but that's what it's supposed to be. And according to their rules, both secondary belts are required for the grand slam. It can abide by whatever rules they want. Even if they don't make sense, which they don't.
Let me say, as someone who does wrestle, if you're hitting the ropes the way you should be, it ain't easy to stop your momentum.
Always good to hear insider advice
5:15.....*That's what she said*
Are you a wrestler or had a wrestling match before? Or just a fan?
Good fuckin points man.
Well done.
You're favorite match of all time?
Too hard to answer
I got a question tho, so Ik back in the day, wrestlers would test out a big match they had coming up at house shows, in today’s digital age where everyone has a phone camera, should wrestlers still do this?
I think it's fine, most people don't film entire matches and if they did spread it on the internet WWE would come after them hard to the point where they would regret it. And even so, not a lot of fans bother looking up bootleg house show matches. A small amount of fans would see it and it's nothing in contrast to the millions out there
@@DaveKnowsWrestling thanks, valuable knowledge if I ever become a booker!
imo
Well-done...damn good vid.
But you forgot one really important element...no member of the McMahon family involved...yeah...I know...I know...
imo
Well I just figured that went without saying
@@DaveKnowsWrestling Yeah...there's that...except it seems as if nobody ever told the McMahons
When I found out wrestling was fake my love for it dropped now I can't have the same joy for when I was little 😔
Do you feel the same way about movies too? And also, that's what happens with growing up
It's not that rest holds are boring, it's more that the rest holds most wrestlers use are boring. They're almost never creative with them
What's a creative rest hold you would like?
Actually lots of matches end with arm bars, lol. Ronda & Asuka got most their wins that way lol
ick
Did you watch the vid 🤷♂️
I guess the one thumbs down is either Vince or Shane
Ha, there's a chance
Bro, nobody wants to see a rest hold in 2019
I understand, but the boys need to catch their breath
@@DaveKnowsWrestling I hear ya Dave. Keep up the good work BTW. I really enjoy your channel
The AEW Mid card needs to watch this video 😂
Depends on what you call mid card. Aew makes all their wrestlers look like main eventers
