Unless you were around in those days before the Xerox copier you might not understand that last bit where all the students smelled the paper. The old copiers called Dittos gave off a sweet scent especially if they were hot off the press, and many schools had a ditto printer on hand and teachers would make copies right before class so the copies were fresh and gave off that sweet aroma, of course it was probably toxic, but nobody was really aware of all the carcinogenic effects then.
@@b-genspinster7895 We also settled our disputes like men by fighting and 90% of the time you and your arch nemesis were best friends by the end of it all ! I had a teacher like Mr Hand strict as could be even to the point where he took me into the principal office to be expelled because he went to paddle me and I snatched the paddle out of his hand. Lets just say my Parents were not happy with my former teacher and he ended up getting fired because in my school records it showed NO Corporal/Disciplinary Punishment, Yes we had spankings in school ! The good ole days.
Not true, the media didn't try and use them as a "Gun Grab-down with the the second Amendment-Why won't you think about the KIDS!" BS propaganda story back then.. You didn't know who had a gun in those days, teachers principals, Schools ( the known to have idiot students) actually had an Officer on duty at them then... Whiney Biotchs had them removed because " they feel like they are in prison, schools shouldn't feel like a prison!" SO medal detectors were put in and Those weak minds became teachers now the Public schools are trash that only teach about "feelings" Push BS false Science" Making the American Public school system a Joke around the world.. The New Weak minds Know there aren't any guns In these "gun free zones" so they shoot them up knowing no one will shoot back. Thank a Millennial, Boomers and Gen X would prefer the "old school" teachers armed and an officer at the school...
Aloha. My name is Mr. Hand and I'll be Your Favorite Martian. "Just like you wouldn't want me to come to your house some evening and discuss US History on your time." And then he shows up at Spicoli's house to do just that.
To be fair: That WAS a dick move by Mr. Hand. He could have not let him in or whatever but tearing up his card was pointless. I'm glad they became friends at the end.
Yeah, but compared to teachers nowadays, seeing how the kids walk all over authority now in public schools is ridiculous. I wish teachers were really like this especially in today’s society because I think kids might actually experience some embarrassment. Bring Shame back. Yes it was a little hostile. Of course it is a movie lol but at the end of the day, your job is a student is to do your work and part of your work is showing up on time just like real life when you go to work if you’re late, you could even get fired.
the smelling of the ditto paper . takes me back .
It's official name is a Mimeograph machine.
I wondered why they did that.
Then again-I think I did it, a time or two...
Man it's like that teacher is from another PLANET, dude!...
He was the Martian in the old TV series, "My Favorite Martian".
@@MasterYoistI think that’s why he said that🤔
Possibly an Alien... y'know-Kinda what we saw, in the movie Men In Black (1997).
Great acting by both Walston and Penn.

Thanks. Never seen the movie, and didn't grow up in that generation. Wondered what that was all about.
It was the hope of getting a buzz rush off the mimeograph chemicals
@us-Bahn yes, lol, there were some rumors about that. I was a little too young to understand.
You had better drugs available than we did !
Sweet scent? Kids were trying to get a high off it! LOL
Ray Walston was brilliant!
In everything he did!
Back when no one got shot.😮❤.
But gun rack with guns in pickups were common. At least out West and some of the Midwest.

@@b-genspinster7895Yeah close minded people act like we weren’t gun crazy back then🙄
Are you old enough to remember sniffing the ink smell off new papers?😂❤
Yeah man, it was a thing back in the day...❤
Oh yeah, the room near the Principal's office had the mimeograph. Sniff and run. LOL
I know that dude. lol
My favorite movie. "This guys been high since the third grade"
Nice bit of foreshadowing - "Just like you wouldn't want me to come to your history and discuss US History on your time"
I thought Spicoli was really pretty respectful here.
Yeah... for the most part. Mr. Hand was really pushing his weight around. here in this scene. He came across as a real power-hungry jerk!

He just wanted Spicoli to pass...so he wouldn't ever have to deal with him again!!!
Ray Walston was an outstanding actor.

They became friends because of "dick" moves. Mr Hand nailed it.
Mr. Hand was a bit intense!
True. But referring to the teacher as a dick after a dick move was unheard of.
I mean, yeah, I want to see students learn, too...but what Mr. Hand did to Mr. Spicoli, was WAYYY out of line, Teacher or not!
Mr. Hand was a stickler for decorum. A dec-stickler.
lol i had a lot of teachers like Mr Hand, they probably would not have survived in today's schools though
I remember ditto paper everybody would sniff it fresh off the printer
E-A-T-I-N-G!
Hey, Bud, what's your problem!?
I heard Jeff pulled a knife on him.
That was an exaggeration. Hey! Do that thing with the carrot again.
Aloha Mr Hand
Didn't he call him a nerd in the TV version?
Yes
Spicoli was such a great stoner archetype. Penn was brilliant
😂
