    A 2-stroke diesel is not boosted unless there is back pressure on the exhaust. Therefore a mechanically supercharged engine is indeed naturally aspirated. This is unique to 2-stokes. It isn't possible to fill the cylinder beyond ambient pressure until the exhaust is used to drive the turbine.

    • @bz938
      @bz938 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You can boost a 2 stroke like the Detroit diesel because the exhaust valve is closed before the intake. The reason the supercharged version is considered NA is because it takes the place of crankcase induction on a traditional 2 stroke. The engine simply won't run without the supercharger.

    • @tracylemme1375
      @tracylemme1375 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is not entirely true. The principle purpose of the blower is to scavenge exhaust and replace with fresh air. However, most 2 stroke diesels close the exhaust valves or ports before closing the intake ports, creating at least a,small amount of supercharging.

    • @dennisford2000
      @dennisford2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tracylemme1375 totally wrong. Intake never opens before the exhaust and can’t close on a ported two stroke anything, diesel or gas . If they open the intake with pressure in the cylinder and hot exhaust would dilute the intake charge with spot and co3

    • @troubleracing6993
      @troubleracing6993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dennisford2000 It's all about timing, the ex valve will always open before the intake port is opened. Tracy Lemme is right about the purpose of the blower. The ex valve closing is what changes everything, for naturally aspirated the ex valve will close after the intake port. For supercharged the valve will close before. Exhaust back pressure does nothing.

    The EMD diesel engines are primarily aimed for use in Diesel-Electric locomotives. EMD was originally a General Motors division. General Motors also created another diesel engine line that included V16 engines with its GMC (Jimmy) diesel series from about 1937 forward. Also two stroke, it include engines as small as single cylinder 53 cubic inch engines up to a few stationary 20 cylinder engines with 93 cu. in per cylinder. The Jimmy engines were primarily used in American over the road trucks, though a significant number were used to power farm tractors.
    Another really interesting subject and video.

    • @craigmclean8260
      @craigmclean8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are also the 149 series Detroits w/ 149 ci/cylinder, and a 6-110 (the only engine in the 110 series); also a blower-scavenged (no exhaust valves) 51 series in 2 and 4-cylinder. Largest was the 20V149, w/ up to about 3000 HP. There was also the Cleveland (nee: Winton)/GMC series, used a lot on WWII subs, w/ V-6 thru V-16 configurations; also the inline "268 series" (about 223 cu. in./cyl.) in 3,4,6 and 8-cylinders.

    • @cdjhyoung
      @cdjhyoung 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@craigmclean8260 Thanks. Knew about those but couldn't collect my thoughts on them when I first posted. Faribanks-Morris also built large capacity opposed cylinder engines for industrial use starting in the early 1930's. Some of those engines ended up in WW II submarines. I know the had 12 piston engines, I wonder if they grew to be 16 piston engines. Those diesel engines had two crank shafts and two opposed pistons per cylinder.

    • @craigmclean8260
      @craigmclean8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cdjhyoung Yes, indeed! The Fairbanks-Morse "38D8-1/8" series was used in subs also; like the Cleveland/GMCs, typically four were installed, running generators for diesel-electric surface power, and to charge an under-deck bank of batteries for "running silent, running deep". The F-M 38D was made in 6 to 12-cylinders inline (24 pistons on the latter); there are a few videos on YT of them running; they sound amazing! There is a modern version of the 38D still made, called "Enviro-Tech", which runs on natural gas, using a diesel injected "pilot", instead of spark plugs. There is a backup power station near where I live which houses one of the old WWII submarine-vintage F-Ms, plus two newer "Enviro-Techs" (12 cylinders in both cases). Also, a spark-ignited NG Waukesha V-12, and two enormous, earlier-model F-M diesels, two-stroke inline 10 and 12 cyl., 18" bore, scavenged by electric blowers in the basement, and a large V-16 Cooper-Bessemer diesel (manufactured long ago in nearby Mt. Vernon, Ohio). Also, the legendary Napier "Deltic" opposed piston w/ 3 banks of 6 cylinders each, 3 crankshafts, and 36 pistons!

    Most V16's sound like V8's with 2-plane cranks, so are generally ho-hum. Of those, I like the Auto Unions the best. Ahead of their time in power, with about twice as much as the chassis and tires could handle.
    But the V16 EMD is my favorite. The rhytmic chant of the EMD in notch 8 is unmistakable. I hope they never stop building them.

    I was the fortunate & proud rig electrician who took care of six EMD V20-2160v generators & one V12 stby generator on a very large, dynamically positioned drill-ship owned by the Reading and Bates drilling company. One of my other favourite 16 cylinder engines was the Coventry Climax flat 16 racing engine from the 1960's. I've never seen it mentioned on this, or any other engine related site. I wonder why ?

    • @brianwood7480
      @brianwood7480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made a mistake in my praise of EMD's: The V20's put out 4160Volts @ 900rpm, not 2160v. The V12 put out 480v on a separate buss system to run the ship when propulsion and drilling operations weren't in use.

    The CZ V16T, despite being two V8 , is a true V16 in the sense that the block and the crankshaft are both cast in one piece. The power takeoff is indeed in the middle, and it has mechanical fans on each side. It still retains a somewhat V8 sound from this arrangement.
    Also, despite being a complete crap, I love the sound of the BRM H16. It's out of this world, pretty hellish. Note that this engine is made of two 180° V8 on top of each other, and not flat (boxers) engines. It is seriously unbalanced by design.

    The Bugatti U16 is the definition of unicorn because there's hardly any engine that exists in a "Twinline" configuration out there. Aka the U shape.

    Jeezzzaaas that BRM boosting 5.2bar it had to use high octane petrol for sure. Here i go battling to go over 1.5bar on my turbo golf i build without it detonation. Amazing some of these designs. Especially the auto unions. Who would have thought that a car in the late 30s can drive over 300km per hour. Germans don't play games

    Curious. It seems as though engines whose cylinder counts are a multiple of eight have the same sound, with the halfway exception of a V8(Having either a roar or a scream depending on the crankshaft). Straight eights, despite having a roar like that of a V8, has an evenly distributed firing order, so by that, a V16 likely has an even firing order among the cylinder banks.
