While packing my backpack kit I needed some small zip locks to organize my first aid kit but didn't know what or where to purchase. You are the first one to mention the pharmacy pill zip locks which appear to be just what I need. Amazon has them. Thanks for your gear review!
Love that a lot of the stuff was affordable and that you explained some things that you would improve. I found this to be wayyyy more accessible / comprehensive than most videos I’ve seen. Thank you!!
I know you're bummed about not finishing but what you did is still a huge accomplishment. Much respect!! Great video and love the dog photobombs. Thanks for sharing.
Your trail videos are some of the best out there, the work that you put into the editing process was fantastic. Best of health to you, stay well, and if you return my wife and I will be watching. Best wishes and prayers to you and your family. 🙂🙂
As a aspiring thru hiker '22, I found your videos very inspiring. You're fun to follow on the trail and I really liked the editing. Makes me want to try and vlog my journey too. I wish ya the best moving forward and hope some day soon you will continue the path nobo towards Katahdin. Also solid review of all your gear.
Lazy Extremist yes thank you, it's been on my mind lately for sure and am looking forward to it :) also wanted to say that I just loved all your videos and enjoyed your warm energy you brought to the trail too!
Just watched this vid and enjoyed the content and candor. I subscribed and will start viewing your other videos simply because of this one. Keep the positive upbeat attitude please!!! For someone getting as sick as you did you've bounced but quite well.
Very happy to learn about the aqua clips. I went through highlands damascus etc in late December last year and it rained, sleeted, and snowed heavily through most of trip. We used cashmere beanies and cashmere balaclavas made from sweaters from thrift stores. Very Warm!!! Huge plus on that is the sleeves you cut off can then be used as wrist buffs, and at night under sleeping socks. Also took our ground covers (tyvek) and used them as ponchos/ wind and snow breaks.
I’m considering bringing tyvek for my Colorado Trail hike. Did it work well as a poncho for you, if you hunker down and wrap it around/above? There will be lots of rogue storms, and I don’t think I want to put my tent up/down for every one.
So thrilled to see your video pop up. Was wondering how you were doing. I totally enjoy seeing your videos, always smiling g and positive, even when it was rough, you stayed positive. Great pack video, well done
Great video. Amazing experience. I wish me and my wife would’ve been there with you. Great assortment of backpacking gear. You’re in therapy healthy any health issues. I have used it for indigestion, I’ve let pressure and other issues. It always works. Is within you and it is free and safe. It will even save you from venomous snake bites, deadly spiders. Thank you so much for sharing this video. God bless you.
Z-lite sleeping pad TIP. If you leave it normal length and fold it in half it is long enough to support your shoulders and hips. Feet won’t be on the mat but you can use some clothes or your pack to insulate from the ground. I use an inflatable pillow which can be placed just above the mat. Hope this helps for some people having the inflatable vs foam sleeping mat dilemma 🤙🇳🇿
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us! It is very inspiring and I watched much of it with a big smile on my face. I’m so sorry you got sick but praise God you got better.
Very cool! I have some of the same gear! ... including the Toaks 650! But I now use it as a coffee mug / backup pot for fire cooking if my stove dies.. which brings up a point.. just ditched my crappy BRS-3000 (it nearly blew up on me) for the new JetBoil Stash. After 3 days, same weight b/c of fuel savings. Sorry you got sick! Nice video and good job!
It was great seeing you pop up on TH-cam again. Glad you're feeling much better. You did a great job editing this video with all the great b-roll clips thrown it. I also like your Crawford family t-shirt.
Glad to see you back on TH-cam! Good video of your gear. I'm still in awe of everything you faced and your courage. Hope your health is good and good luck with the triathlon!
I enjoy your videos. Hope you are able to return to the AT someday! I appreciate you posting about your experience and how you got sick. I also have a compromised immune system from chemo treatment, even though I finished well over a year ago now they have told me that it will always be something I have to keep in mind. I was hospitalized early this year for 2-3 weeks in ICU with septic shock, and an infection that took a long time to clear out of my system. This was my 2nd time in 12 months getting sepsis, so it's a concern. I mostly do day hikes, or overnight..and use a Sawyer like most people if getting water from a stream. I used to run ultramarathons before my cancer diagnosis, and slowly getting back..but hiking is easier on my body, but would use a Sawyer mini on trails if needed to refill water since we don't carry too much weight for races. Thanks again for sharing your experience! I will look into utilizing a second system for treating water while on trail.
I am happy to hear your health is overall improving. It is absolutely a real concern given your background. Although my experience was rare, I have since moved to adding chemical drops in addition to the Sawyer just for the peace of mind, and added the InReach for SOS if needed. I hope you find some good ways to adventure, as your health allows!
Your water virus has me concerned for when I do my thru-hike. A little research came up with Chlorine Dioxide that is used by the US Military to purify water in addition to filtering it. "Portable Aqua" with that active ingredient is found on Amazon. I so enjoyed your videos. Very well done. May God continue to bless you, give you a full recovery and provide for your next excursion. Thank you for blessing us by sharing your experiences.
Don’t let my experience give you too much concern. But I guess I have been traumatized and now have a double system in place for when I take my next trip.
Excellent vid... great list too!! Consider coming to thru-hike the 130+/- mile Centenial Trail here in The Black Hills of South Dakota. I'm going to be, Lord willing, 67 next month and I'm planning to do it again this Spring. Great Blessing on you and your husband. Tom K.
Sun gloves and a compass in the poop kit! Def gonna keep those in mind. My hands post trail were three times darker than the rest of my body and cracked and bleeding in every crevice. Also almost got lost pooping multiple times. Love these tips!
You youngsters have all this nice light weight gear. In my hiking days we had aluminum frame packs, sternos for cooking and Moonstone sleeping bags (nice bags but heavy). I still have my Moonstone though I’m a little big for it now. We also took whole eggs, country ham and beanie weanis.
I’m also glad to see you pop back up. I miss you now as many others are scattered from PA to ME and are flipping so fast I’m confused! I watched your trek from #1 on up after finding you so the details in this had context for me as for all the others. I really needed the review on the Patagonia Puff jacket. I’m moving away from down and needed to see how a jacket performs in the South in a really bad storm. Very helpful revives. It happens I found that very jacket in men’s XL Blue half price tonight. The gray was a bit more and the red a bit more than the gray. I still own and use everything I ever bought from Patagonia including underwear from an AT section hike in 2001. Not joking. Even still have their camp shoes. Sorry both are no longer produced. But the jackets are really cheaper now. I agree with the dirty titanium pot or rag theory. A little more fuel to boil water in a dirty utensil is worth it. I’m not saying that’s what made you sick! Just want the readers to take care. We are all so happy you are healed up. My trail name for you is “Intrepid.”
Thanks for the comment! My Patagonia worked out well. I had friends with down that had problems staying dry. It sounds like you found a great discount! And yes, I totally agree about my cook pot bandana. Someone else also pointed it out. A very fair point and something I’ll change moving forward.
Good job! Great tip on the compass! Also talk about anything you want. It would allow male instructors to use you video as good instructions for women hikers. I used to copy the NOLS book section on "Women's Concerns" to give my female travelers, to help them with information.
Having used a half inch ensolite sleeping pad for years, I can confirm the continual turning and sleeping cold (Sierra locales mostly). So if you do upgrade your pad, you'll no doubt find the quilt/bag sleeps much warmer!
This is one of the best if not the top informative video iv seen yet. So many are stuck on the snobbery of gear they forget the personal aspect. I understand personal privacy but please just talk about the tampons and UTIs. A man who poops in the woods and shutters at a woman discussing menstruation is no man. And that goes for women too
Thank you! I was more worried about any ramifications for my professional realm if I TMI on the internet than how the forest-pooping folks feel LOL But totally hear ya!
This was so helpful. I'm sorry to hear you got sick on the trail--I can see how much it hurts to know you didn't finish. You will finish it someday. Thanks for the tips.
Regarding the knife, I love the Victorinox 4-Inch Swiss Classic Paring Knife. Weighs less than an 1 ounce (0.8oz)! Great handy wee knife. I keep it in a sheath I made out of cardboard and tape, but i might buy the ultralight Polypropylene sheath for it. I also really like the 4monster fanny-pack, superlight and around 12 bucks!
Found your channel kind of late I guess, but the compass in the poop bag is legit! A small compass that clips to the chest strap of a backpack is also a good idea. Its not cheep but Gossamer is perfect! Also cutting a cheep water bottle in half so you can fill your dirty water bag/bottle lets you access water sources that large containers cannot. Good Luck!
Loved following you on your AT trek, so sorry it ended the way it did, but most importantly you are home and healthy, and survived that scare. I do hope you have the opportunity soon to finish your hike, and will look forward to following it. I really liked what you said in video #14 i think about when you're out there in the woods, mountains, you feel closer to God....i totally agree. I'm currently planning my thru hike next year, SOBO...starting in July. I do have some questions for you on your planning of your hike. I'm in the early stages of my hike, and there are a couple things that i think i know the answers, but i'm kinda scratching my head too.
Very good gear, I do the same with the bandana, but i changed with litetowel that is rewashable. Think Darwin have recommended to me. The HMG is a great bag i have the 4400 now, only con I have is that it gets pretty sweaty on my back, since it docent have mesh but its super solid made and simple enough. The Pods are fantastic, its very easy to organize gear on those pods.
Hey, really enjoyed watching your videos, you look like you made a full recovery, maybe you can give it another try again in the next few years, best of luck.
Good tip on sun gloves, aqua clips, and ear glass holders! That bandana idea might have contributed to being sick even. Nice to hang your toak on pack and prioritize soap. Bacteria would fester in a bandana. As much as can air out/be in sun, can be uv sanitized. Mesh bags to hang things like socks, to air our. Bring your garmin to the restroom. Sorry you got sick.
Loved this video it made me laugh and I learned a few things and got some good ideas. I switched to an inflated pad and it's better but I still have to "turn" every couple hours - but then my bones are at least twice as old as yours! I finished up a section hike today south of Erwin and my shuttle driver, Doug, said he picked up several hikers this year who had some kind of sepsis. Still the important thing is you're ok now!
I rode with Doug! He was sooo kind and informative. Interesting to hear about others with sepsis. I’ve heard the same about inflatables, and heard my friends rolling on them all night too lol
Thank you for letting me and everyone else be apart your life during your Appalachian trail journey. I wish you could have made it all the way. I hope you're feeling better. I know you have taken a bunch of time off to do this trip. Any thoughts of going out again this year and getting some more miles in?
Unfortunately I’m not planning for any long trips on the AT this year. I’m always thinking about what type of long hiking trip I can take. Working on starting a business now so hopefully I can do a thru attempt again.
Love your videos! Also LOVE your Fight For Together "Safety Second" t-shirt! Have your read Ben's book yet? I bought 2 signed copies if you'd like 1 of them! It's a REALLY great book. Take a hike! 💜💙💛
Can I get those panels that you chopped off your Z-lite? (I’m 6’9” so my problem is the exact opposite of yours). 🙃 I couldn’t possibly count the number of gear reviews I’ve watched this summer but this one is hands down the most entertaining, informative … and brilliantly edited!
This isn't intended to say you "should have" done this, but for anyone worried about water purification, I've always found it super easy to just pop an Aquamira (bleach) tablet into the clean water side of my Sawyer filter setup. Filter takes out the vast majority of stuff, tablets blast any virii or cover you if your filter's failing. Some would consider doubling up to be paranoid, but the tablets weigh nothing and it hasn't failed me yet. (If it's really nasty or silty, pre-filtering through a bandana can help your filter from getting clogged too.)
Good gear list! I think I also have a lot of small this that I carry. They don't weigh anything really and they come in handy, but all those little things together might make your backpack heavy! Thanks for sharing! 😁 ATB 😀
Truly enjoyed your series on the AT and the river to river trail. Thanks for posting! If I could offer one piece of unsolicited advice- get thy self a blowup pad! Better sleep = happy hiker:)
I'm glad to see you r better, this video was end of July, hope too see more ,cuz u do a great job, I also noticed ur hair is lighter in color n I think u r little bit thinner, u be careful n well, so I'll pray for you, and come on back ,also cool dog ,ok see u later, I hope
So sorry your hike was cut short. I became ill from water on an Outward Bound trip years ago. Nightmare! Now that you’ve recovered, will you return to AT? Great reviews, btw!
Thanks for sharing! I'm toying w/ the idea of hiking the AT as part of an early retirement once all my midgets fly the nest and found this very informative. I'm currently dead set on hiking w/ a collapsible stool. During my days in the military and being in the field humping the greatest luxury was a proper place to sit. Did you see folks w/ collapsible stools and have any thoughts on that? Also are water bottles easier than hydration packs (w/ tube) - I'm getting the sense water bottles are the norm? My last question is did your hydration requirements decrease once you better adapted to routine hiking? I assume the first 4-6 weeks your body changes a lot and fueling and hydration needs change.
Thank you. Yes I’d love to do the AT or even PCT once I get my ducks in a row. It may take some time. I am also veryyy interested in Camino in the more immediate future if the borders could open, as its only a month long trip.
Great video. Will you consider a different filtration system to take care of viruses? Or will you stick with the Sawyer since the chances of encountering the same problem is so low?
I have definitely been spooked by the water situation. I have since purchased a new Sawyer, and am planning some upcoming hikes where I will double-treat with Aquamira drops until I can work through the fear. Interestingly, someone commented that a shuttle driver said a few people had sepsis this year. I haven't confirmed from a primary source, but I'd be curious to know why the pattern.
Please don’t stress about talking to long. After doing a 2 week trek, this is amazing insight. Thanks for sharing.
While packing my backpack kit I needed some small zip locks to organize my first aid kit but didn't know what or where to purchase. You are the first one to mention the pharmacy pill zip locks which appear to be just what I need. Amazon has them. Thanks for your gear review!
I really enjoyed that. I stopped it several times and took notes. Best video I’ve seen. Thank you.
I like the speed of this editing.
Love that a lot of the stuff was affordable and that you explained some things that you would improve. I found this to be wayyyy more accessible / comprehensive than most videos I’ve seen.
Thank you!!
great video. i anticipate your view count climbing higher than you did in the video. chapeau dude. respect.
I absolutely loved this video!!!! So simple and truthful! Lol thank you for just talking honest! I’ll watch more of your videos!
Fantastic...Compass tip was a great one. Thanks for the share !!!
I know you're bummed about not finishing but what you did is still a huge accomplishment. Much respect!! Great video and love the dog photobombs. Thanks for sharing.
actually great info, time just flies through the video, appreciate spending time talking on everything.
Your trail videos are some of the best out there, the work that you put into the editing process was fantastic. Best of health to you, stay well, and if you return my wife and I will be watching. Best wishes and prayers to you and your family. 🙂🙂

You should definitely give it a shot! It’s extra work, but I’m so glad I did! Have fun preparing :)
Lazy Extremist yes thank you, it's been on my mind lately for sure and am looking forward to it :) also wanted to say that I just loved all your videos and enjoyed your warm energy you brought to the trail too!
Thank you for sharing, and your honesty. Thank you ! hope that you continue and finish the trail.
You are really inspiring. I hope you’re able to finish your trek some day. God bless you.
Fantastic video. Really well done.
Compass in toilett bag- very wise!
Just watched this vid and enjoyed the content and candor. I subscribed and will start viewing your other videos simply because of this one. Keep the positive upbeat attitude please!!! For someone getting as sick as you did you've bounced but quite well.
Great job on the video - you carried a few items I have never thought of.

This has been the best series. I'm planning on 2021 and really appreciate your honesty. Thank you for sharing.
So thrilled to see your video pop up. Was wondering how you were doing. I totally enjoy seeing your videos, always smiling g and positive, even when it was rough, you stayed positive. Great pack video, well done
Thank you!

Yes I intermittently did this with some reduction in pain. I do think I'm going to give an inflatable a try for my CT this summer.
Today only I have subscribed your channel...Highly appreciated. Love from India
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us! It is very inspiring and I watched much of it with a big smile on my face.
I’m so sorry you got sick but praise God you got better.
Loved the gear breakdown / review of your trip.
Solid load out. Glad to see you. Hope you are well and healthy. See you down the trail. Terry.
It was great seeing you pop up on TH-cam again. Glad you're feeling much better. You did a great job editing this video with all the great b-roll clips thrown it. I also like your Crawford family t-shirt.
Thanks so much for going through all your gear it’s been really helpful.
Glad to see you back on TH-cam! Good video of your gear. I'm still in awe of everything you faced and your courage. Hope your health is good and good luck with the triathlon!
Thank you! Yes I’m feeling so much better.
I just finished binge watching all your videos the other day and was wondering how you were doing. Cant wait to watch this one!
Very informative and to the point. One of the best gear videos I have seen. Stay safe!
I enjoy your videos. Hope you are able to return to the AT someday! I appreciate you posting about your experience and how you got sick.
Tom K.
I have not heard of Centennial Trail in SD. I will be looking it up!!
Sun gloves and a compass in the poop kit! Def gonna keep those in mind. My hands post trail were three times darker than the rest of my body and cracked and bleeding in every crevice. Also almost got lost pooping multiple times. Love these tips!
Cool breakdown. That’s why I like the grayl it deals with the viruses too. Also I like the poo compass idea
I think you do great with your taking of videos. I think it would be cool to take us on more adventures. Take care.
Omg the Road ID is SO SMART! I'm totally going to get one right now
You youngsters have all this nice light weight gear.

😂. You are hilarious. Love all of your bags! Thanks for the details and yes I talk to much but hey, that’s life 👍
This was so helpful! Thanks for sharing!

@@lazyextremist3119 sorry, I should have used a different tone. I would have done same.
Great vid. I’m using a lot of the same gear. That HMG pods are great
This was so helpful. I'm sorry to hear you got sick on the trail--I can see how much it hurts to know you didn't finish. You will finish it someday. Thanks for the tips.

Great job. Thanks for keeping it real.
Omg I'm so glad I found this video, I'm going to try to do the trail and i am trying to gather gear.
Great review, and don’t worry about talking too much, heavily valued your opinion. Rock on!!!
Found your channel kind of late I guess, but the compass in the poop bag is legit! A small compass that clips to the chest strap of a backpack is also a good idea. Great vid. Very helpful. Appreciated everything you shared.
Wow... so excited I found your channel. Hope to see you on the trail 2021.
The is the first comment I can say with confidence: “maybe”...

Well done, you did a great job. 🤗
Hey, really enjoyed watching your videos, you look like you made a full recovery, maybe you can give it another try again in the next few years, best of luck.
I only just noticed your AT tag! Good stuff man
Great videos I hope you are well
New to your channel. We are Gearing up to attempt a portion of the appalachians with kids. Thank you for this video.
Awesome! I am so inspired by folks who take their kids. That's incredible. Have fun!
Hello my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this very informative video. I hope that you are staying healthy. The very best to you. 🤗
Yes I agree bandana wasn’t the best idea. I’ve had that comment from others.
Planning on doing a Pyrenees and Swiss alps through hike for 2022. Packing lists like these help a lot even of it is not at all the same trail !!
What a fantastic trip you have planned!! Yes, I love gear videos - which is why I made one. I've learned so much from other hikers.

I enjoyed your video. so proud of you. You are very brave. Best wishes.
Awesome Re-Cap!!!!
Great Video!!!!!!! thank you!
Would love to see a video geared toward women on the trail and how to deal with feminine hygiene while on the trail.
Great loadout video 👍
Thank you for letting me and everyone else be apart your life during your Appalachian trail journey. I wish you could have made it all the way. I hope you're feeling better. I know you have taken a bunch of time off to do this trip. Any thoughts of going out again this year and getting some more miles in?
Unfortunately I’m not planning for any long trips on the AT this year. I’m always thinking about what type of long hiking trip I can take. Working on starting a business now so hopefully I can do a thru attempt again.
Rocking the 'Fight for Together' shirt
Awesome video
Thank you for sharing! I definitely have taken some of your recommendations!
Love your videos! Also LOVE your Fight For Together "Safety Second" t-shirt! Have your read Ben's book yet? I bought 2 signed copies if you'd like 1 of them! It's a REALLY great book. Take a hike! 💜💙💛
We loved watching your trek. I would love a video about your perspective being a solo female hiker and how things go with "female stuff".
Can I get those panels that you chopped off your Z-lite? (I’m 6’9” so my problem is the exact opposite of yours). 🙃
I couldn’t possibly count the number of gear reviews I’ve watched this summer but this one is hands down the most entertaining, informative … and brilliantly edited!
Wow what a compliment, thank you!! And I ended up using my panels for a seat pad during the Colorado Trail :)
Yes I want to try the non-iodine tablets. It's a good tip!
Great gear loadout! Thanks for sharing (New Subscriber)
Glad you're better!
When was your start date? I am thinking of getting a 20 degree quilt, but I am starting April 17th.
Thank you!
Does Guthooks know where the contaminated water source is located?
Great video
Good video. Great tip compass in poo bag.
Where did you get wiregate biner that locks? (You did get out there, it will still be there, congrats, & thanks)
I think I got it at REI.
Bear canisters make a good seat.
Fold the z pad into a 3/4 pad with more padding under hips and shoulders.
Love your charisma and personality on camera. Great gear video. At some point, will you be planning another thru hike?
Thank you. Yes I’d love to do the AT or even PCT once I get my ducks in a row. It may take some time. I am also veryyy interested in Camino in the more immediate future if the borders could open, as its only a month long trip.
That's impressive how waterproof your pack turned out to be.
I continue to be impressed with the HMG! My pack was more wet on the Colorado Trail, but definitely still did a great job.
im gland I found you. Great vid!
Hello, can you give a link for Aqua Clip, thank you.
