I drop by the REI in NYC this past weekend and ran into an AT Thru-hiker from Indiana who was taking a double zero in city. After getting a few items, she was jumping on the Staten Island ferry to get a close up view of a Lady Liberty and then heading over to view the Macy's July 4th Fireworks ... than back on trail July 6. She was wearing her backpack in the city ... kind of funny !!!!
Enjoyed you and Stretch immensely. Great hike and great documentation. Hope to see some future adventures down the trail.

Very informative. Enjoyed watching your journey this year. Sectioned hike AT in the 70s and 80s. Skipped Rocksylvania (I see nothing has changed) the 100 mile wilderness. Always thought I finish but never did. Too old now, so I hike vicariously through vlogs such as yours. Thanks you for the daily post, I will miss them.

I like the pre-trail gear lists. It shows what you learned over the course of your hike.
great job, I would like to see a trip breakdown. How much money was spent on the trip. (the $1,000 a month figure has to be from the 1990's and it seems we all spend more then that. How many nights were in hotels and hostels vs on the trail. How many nights did you spend in a shelter,. (you seemed not to like the shelters). how many zeros, stuff like that.
I just finished my thru a week after Taylor and found the $1000 / month figure quite reasonable. I spent around that on my hike. I was somewhat frugal in the foods I bought for resupply, stayed in a hostel every 4-5 days when available, and bought restaurant food whenever I had the opportunity. I know I saved money though by never staying in hotels unless I split the cost with ~4 others and not going to bars at all since I’m under 21.
You could drastically increase the cost by eating freeze dried meals or frequently spending nights in hotels, however I also think you could go a bit cheaper by skipping some of the town luxuries I indulged in.

14 lbs is a solid base wieght. I really liked the Hyper Mountain Lyte pack, but I didn't like be able to strap my Fly Creek on top. And my other con was no load lifters. I did like the solid material of the pack and the pockets were deffiently roomy for me. The mesh and interior of the bag was roomy, too.

Hey Taylor! So good to see you. Great video and great load out. Very close to mine, minus the stove. It really does take time to shake down your gear. Especially when there is new gear coming out daily, or you are hiking faster than the change of the seasons! One question I have is did you wash your quilt at all while on trail? I can’t wait for your next gear video showing us what you will be taking on your PCT thru hike 😉 that is going to be epic! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Really great information. Your base weight was less than I expected it to be. It would be interesting to see the cost of the gear you used minus the video equipment. That would be helpful in planning for the journey, thanks for your willingness to share. I am really proud of you and Stretch.

Suggest you do a video soon with Stretch! Where is he? How did the AT impact on his life? I have to believe if you got along so well on the Trail, you have an emotional connection to him as he does to you. FYI, I live in log home at Twin Mountain so your NH journey is well known to my girlfriend and myself!

Hey Taylor, So happy for you and your Summit. It was a pleasure to watch you hike. I have a question, why do most backpackers carry their tent stakes and poles on the outside of there pack? I have seen this alot and as a newer backpacker I usually keep min stuff together. Just wondering? Peach.

Thanks, Taylor! I love all your videos! I’m glad you’re doing some post-trail ones. Could you do an episode to summarize what you ate and how you cooked? Did you use the jet boil just for boiling water or did you cook meals in it? The only thing I “cook” is boiling water because I hate the clean up! But I’m not sure if that’s a sustainable solution for a long trail.
I also ditched my pillow and now use my clothing bag with a buff wrapped around it. I don't really notice any difference while sleeping and it's one less item to carry.
Wondering if you kept any kind of a financial journal and can break down the total cost including gear, food resupplies, in-town expenses, etc? Not being too nosy I hope!
Someone who is thru hiking right now and has posted monthly cost updates is Wizard on the trail. Check his videos, they’re short and to the point, he just posted his month 4 expenses video.

How about a video on just your equipment failures. My longest hike has been two weeks years ago. I’ve got a bunch of new and old gear that I’m a little concerned about. Prepping for the PCT. BTW, I do have the Arc Air backpack among my gear list…

Congratulations and cool video. I thought for sure you were going to switch out the 10 degree bag for a lighter/lower temp one. Cool thing about those styles of bags are their versatility in many different temps/weather.
maybe im wrong but i dont understand the hype about quilts other than being lighter than most mummy bags. ive got a WM versatile and it is a full zip except for about the last 6 inches of the foot box, so im able to open it up the same way as a closed footbox quilt, but if its fully zipped its guaranteed to be warmer than a 10F quilt. one pro argument for quilts ive seen is that they have pad straps so drafts are minimal compared to an unzipped sleeping bag which has no straps. that one is a moot point though, because if im hot i want drafts, if i dont i zip up. also, since they have no hoods often times people bring like 2 extra pieces of head warming gear, so the weight for the sleep system is often times very close to a mummy bag if not more.
maybe ill try a quilt at some point, but in my opinion they are actually less versatile, because my bag can open up to keep me cool but its also a mummy bag that can keep me zipped up and warm in a blizzard. i winter camp mostly though, so that certainly sways my opinion towards mummy bags. if i was a summer camper, i probably would go with something like a 12 ounce 50f EE Enigma quilt.

I don't think you are wrong in general, but I live in Florida, so the full zip is a huge plus. It really depends on your weather.
I personally have several bags/quilts. My go to favorite is a Feathered Friends Flicker UL 30. I also have a 20 degree mummy bag, a 40 degree quilt, and an old north face cat's meow mummy that I don't really use anymore.
For general hiking the FF Flicker is one of my favorite pieces of gear when combined with a hooded puffy. You get benefits of a full bag and a quilt, but way more versatile, IMHO.
If I was going on a colder weather hhike or higher altitude hike I would probably take the mummy though.

how can 9 people not like this video? due to physical limitations I can not hike the A.T. but so fascinating to see the items carried. Surprised no soap, deodorant, hand wipes and masks for in towns (Covid) or shampoo. Also just guessing you had ladies "necessities", and one or two credit cards (which I carried on a strap inside my shirt a/la Europeans and U.S. travelers.). But congrats again and thank you for these vids.
If you could only take one tent on a long TH, would you choose the TW or the Duplex?

Hi Taylor, congratulations on completion of your through hike. I've enjoyed watching each video and looking forward to the post videos (especially the backpack review). Did you think it was worth the weight to have the jet boil stash compared to something lighter like the BRS 3000T? Can you explain your thoughts on this? I have each type of stove and the jet boil is awesome because it is so quick but I saved a lot of weight by going to the BRS.

Hi Taylor, it doesn’t look like you used a sleeping bag liner. What are your thoughts on a liner? Would u have ever needed it with your 10 degree quilt? Would it have been worth it for cleanliness? How tall are you and did you get the 6’ or 5’6” quilt? Is there any benefit to having one long enough to put over your head?

I did a shake down in April in MN and it got down to 15 degrees at night, I was so happy to have a blanket / liner but not sure if I'll need it for the AT. I plan to leave first week of March 2022. Where'd you get the little tube of soap? I tried using an eye dropper for camp suds once, and mistook it in the dark for my regular eye drops. A different form factor would be good.

Taylor, I missed the end of your trip due to a short backpacking trip of my own in the San Juans - but I really appreciate your gear list! You said in one of your last videos that the Katadyn filter you were carrying had really reduced in flow rate. Have you been able to correct that? Or is it something that just needs to be replaced?
I have a similar question: Did you just use the one filter over the course of the AT, or did you have to replace it at some point before you finished? I am really interested in the Katadyn but would like to know if there is a way to back-flush it or, if not, how long it lasts.
Taylor… I just have to say that I loved following you on your through hike. It was a few minutes of zen each morning. Maybe I missed it but why did you swap out your tent?
I swapped to my semi free-standing tent in MA because I knew a lot of the upcoming tent sites were on top of wooden platforms and I get pretty frustrated setting my duplex up on those.
Could you see a scenario where you would’ve got the 3400 Hyperlite vs the 2400?

Two questions. When you weighed your base weight, did you include your fuel cannister? Also, how often did the Garmin watch require charging? I have an older one that just expired, and I used to have to charge that one aboout once a week.
I'm pretty sure that most people don't include fuel canisters or alcohol ( for an alcohol stove) in their base weight.
I included fuel in my baseweight
My watch lasted maybe 5 or 6 days
