In total Metallica has blended the metal and melodic sound, tempo, unique vocal that enabled the most successful band on 🌎 though i f**kin like all the big 4 bands.
My parents were at this show. My dad loves heavy metal and the big four, and my mom loved Metallica (she tolerated Megadeth and anthrax but hated Slayer). They told me how they had to pull my drunk uncle out of the mosh pit😂. I told them how it was Jeff Hanneman’s last show and how lucky they were and they were in disbelief, even my mom. I can’t believe I didn’t get into metal until after the last great big four show was literally down the street from where I lived!
My first and only metal concent I've been to. Not to mention my first pit experience... I happened to be standing in the middle of a pit when Slayer opened up with their first song. I wasn't standing for long! Got targeted and knocked down, but some hero hooked my arm and got me up out of that circle. Was a pleasure being part and experiencing this once in a lifetime festival.
I went to this concert and I've already seen Megadeth twice before this so I kinda knew what their setlist would be and Metallica would have been number 2 for me and that was gonna be fun no doubt about it. Anthrax was my first time seeing them and they were ok. I never really heard their songs so I wasn't too pumped but I still had fun. Slayer on the other hand, I have never seen them but they were on my priority list and I know most of their songs so I had to see them. And the fact that they played my favorite song Angel of Death with Jeff was even more intense. People were burning plastic bottles to start a fire pit. It was a good day.
This was a great day. We were VIP ticket holders. Up front for Anthrax, Megadeth, then lunch, then buying shirts for Slayer, in the front again for Metallica. Fantastic crowd, fantastic music.
I got to go to this as a broke teenager, no waiting in merch lines etc. Being in the 114 degree crowd THE ENTIRE CONCERT with a damn leather battle jacket. I'm surprised I didn't die from heat that day. But MAN WAS IT SO DAMN SICK BEING THERE!!!!!! Everyone in the group lost each other before Anthrax ended and somehow found each other at the end. I got to crowdsurf to all of Raining Blood. And my jacket was destroyed by the end of it. This memory kicks ultimate ass.
Fwiw, Angel of Death is the greatest metal song of all time. If Metal is "anger music," is the angriest, most intense, most uncompromising song ever written on the angriest, most intense, most uncompromising album ever recorded. I used to work at Bogart's in Cincy, back when it was music club, and one time they decided to play Reign in Blood over the speakers during the break after the opening band. The crowd went insane. The mosh pit was the craziest I was ever in when I was there. Because they played a RECORDING of Slayer. I saw them live at the Newport in Columbus a few years after that; guys were just streaming out of the mosh pit bleeding. It was insane. I told my brother, at the end of that show, I went out into the cold air and felt at peace for the first time in my life: I had no anger left, it was all on the floor in that Slayer mosh pit.
I flew out from Texas to California just for this festival!! Best concert of my life!! Metallica 🔥🔥 I'm originally from California but I was living in Texas and I wasn't going to miss this History in the making!

I remember this show so well. Basically got stuck in the from row with it being so crapped you could lift your feet off the ground and not fall. Security guards were more occupied with keeping people from passing out in the 100F or roughly 40C heat providing water and occasionally pulling people out. Some girl who was getting pulled out had the security guard pull her panties out of the way and flash a good part of the crowd I was in. A Guy named Noah who was in Warbringer for a time who was next to me yell "THANKS DUDE" right after that happened. I ended up bailing out of that mid way through Slayer cause I felt like I was going to pass out if I didn't get some more water. It was worth it. Crazy to think I was at the last Slayer show where Jeff preformed any songs.
