On a different note, latest published ONS, NatCen and British Social Attitudes survey data on Religion in the UK shoes that Christianity has dropped to its lowest level in history at roughly below 39% with Atheism and Islam on the rise. This reflects a complete secular country and British society and its clear to see that the government and leaders of establishment/British press are afraid of the growth of Islam. Also, why are there 26 Church of England priests and bishops sitting in the House of Lords when affiliation with the CofE is dwindling (only 1% of people aged 18-24 are affiliated). I care about racism, and freedom to worship, but since the Enlightenment we were becoming a more secular nation and free to criticise religion. We can no longer do that without fear of violent retribution. The left conflates criticism of Islam with racism, probably because racists conflate the two. As a consequence the left tend to defend one religion, which is Islam, even when it's repressive.

Its always weird how usually the biggest islamophobes are also the ones who downplay covid the most.Lets be honest if 9/11 never happened islamophobia wouldn't be the issue it is. Sure there would be qn undercurrebt but it wouldn't have the same kind of strong emotional effect.(don't even get me started on the US) But if you took an objective view the total number of deaths from attacks in western countries combined since 1990 doesn't even equal the number of covid dead in Portugal.Yeah do the math. But again 9/11 had such a strong emotional impact that these people cannot move on. They've internalised a set of beliefs about islam so much so its their mantra. They may not realise it but their emotions have gotten the better of them the fear has become an obsession a basic 'fact' for them.

I value a socio-political analysis of the conflicts between terror organizations and the US/UK etc. but to suggest that the primary factor isn't religion when well to do, educated socially connected people commit acts of terror or join organizations like the muslim brotherhood. is a stretch. i dont buy the argument that religion was the only avenue left to these people/organizations in a post colonial world. religion served as a core tenant and amplifier of their prejudices. just as it has done for christian fascists in croatia, spain, and the US contemporaneously. the religion is not an after thought of the politics, it is fused.
there is much to admire in islamic culture. but lets take the extremists at their word and the anti lgbt contingent, that's not solely political, its clearly religious and should be challenged on those grounds.

Thinking that Islam is a threat to a British way of life, or Western civilisation, is not Islamophobic. It might not be correct, but it would be hard to prove either way; those are simply negative opinions of Islam. I have a negative opinion of Islam. I also have a negative opinion of Christianity. It should be possible to harshly criticise and mock Islam without being labelled Islamophobic as if it's some kind of crime of prejudice. Islamophobia would be prejudice against or hatred of Muslims. Not Islam itself. Otherwise you're simply outlawing criticism, or legitimate fears around Islam.

Leaving aside party politics in the UK and the entire liberal vs conservative standpoints we see in other Western societies, the second argument made in the book Ash S quotes from in wide of the mark in suggesting that religion is not a key driving force underpinning terror organisations like al -Qaeda and IS. Religious justification for their violence is absolutely central to their 'philosophy' and they make little effort to hide it. In Palestine, the situation is different, since they are faced with the daily reality of the most appalling injustices that are part of the illegal occupation of their lands. But when terrorists murdered the Charlie Ebdo journos, it was because their believed their faith had been offended and it was their religious duty to avenge that. Likewise the attack on Rushdie. Concerts are prime targets because all forms of entertainment and pleasures are considered inexcusable. As are all venues open for entertainment. Even a child's funfair in Nice was fair game. A reading of the writings and comments made by the forerunners of al-Qaeda in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood clearly demonstrate that it is Western lifestyle, education, democracy, and liberal attitudes to women and gays are which are seen as most dangerous to Islam and the true reasons those of the Islamic fundamentalist mindset feel it must be destroyed at all costs.

Maybe we should just say what we mean and mean what we say? Maybe, no matter what we do - our meaning will always get encrypted? I'm a total novice really. Spent the last year just trying to understand philosophy in general. Just concentrating on Hegel and Marx at the moment. I think I understand what each of them are saying. But I can't help feeling like I have come full circle. I originally found sollace in something as abstract as the Reimann Hypothesis (concerning Prime Numbers) - something we think must be true but seems impossible to prove. Prime numbers - the building blocks of all numbers - they just exist and defy all explanation or formulation. I then find myself lately seeing Marx and Hegel through something like the quest to prove the Reimann Hypothesis - it does directly impact economic activity, as pretty much all encryption of financial transactions are done using prime numbers... and so the material means (computers) keep advancing for ever more sophisticaed means of both producing ever more complex and bigger primes for encryption purposes (data protection), and the ability to crack those prime number codes through computer hacking... all the while the primes themselves - despite being infinite in their existence - become fewer and further between to be able to find and utilise. Not to mention the huge energy and material demands of something like BitCoin. Or that corporate efforts to co-opt bitcoin (blockchain) technonology will likely fail due to the insecurity of their systems caused by the back doors required to manipulate them towards their own profitable ends. Perhaps Hegel would view such an advance compliments his philosophy? Whereas Marx would see it as just enslaving us more and ultimately futile - we should just trust each other. Maybe Karl Marx was more of an existentialist in the end?

Where do ex-muslims come into all of this? This video is very western because it doesn't deal with the struggles atheists are going through in muslim countries. Just one example is malaysia, where if you are indigenous the state labels you on your birth certificate as muslim and you can't escape it. Tying islam with 'race' is a mass disservice to individuals in muslim countries who are advocating for reason and rejecting indoctrinated religion.

Spot on as usual Ash, but I think that Islamophobia is actually endemic in the white British population as a whole, not just certain sections of it.. So I think there needs to be a proper definition of Islamophobia and legislation against it, because it's getting to be a real problem, much worse than anti-semitism, which was never that bad in Britain. But I've heard some horrific stories of Islamophobia in Britain, particularly against Muslim women. It's sickening and tough measures should be taken to deal with it.

5:09 It would be very ahistorical to start the "clash of cultures" with the Crusades: the Muslim conquest of most of Spain was hundreds of years earlier, and the Crusades themselves were prompted by Muslim Turk encroachments on the Asian portion of the Roman (Byzantine) Empire.

Muslims and Islam consider themselves superior to and more important than other groups and communities. The word "kuffar" and the anti-Christian, anti-Jewish rhetoric that is inherent in Muslim communities reflects this. This sense of self-superiority is also shown in Sharia law which details the value and worth of non-Muslims in comparison to Muslims. Muslims state Sharia law cannot be changed and advocate the installing of Sharia law, which would result in all non Muslims living as second class citizens to Muslims in a religious apartheid state. Practicing Muslims (in the sense that they perform the required prayers and rituals at the correct times and observe the Islamic holy days) carry out atrocities against non-Muslims, as there are some verses that can be interpreted without difficulty to instruct this.
Racists use opposition to Islam as a pretence to mask their prejudice against the South Asian community. And media outlets do sensationalise and "other" Muslims, most of whom just have normal lives. However, no other religion has an extreme side to it, that families have to actually battle against to keep their children away from.

This was a very informative video so thank you. I would also add that I think anti-semitism is discussed more because as Labour is seen as the party that stands up for the less well-off, so there are likely a higher proportion of minorities, including Jewish people, whereas I doubt that there are muslim Tory members in proportion to our union's population, perhaps giving them less social capital.
On the more critical side, I don't respect the fact that you (Novara Media) yourselves are deflecting from what many Jewish Labour members are calling institutionalised anti-semitism. You only have to look on Bastani's twitter feed to see post after post about how respective Labour MPs and Jewish (ex) Labour members speaking up against anti-semitism are 'attacks' on the Labour Party, as opposed to rightly speaking up against prejudice and racism. If you truly care about both forms of prejudice equally, why have you not done a video on anti-semitism also, and are you not contradicting yourself RE not holding both up to the same light? We all have our own ideologies but we must put integrity first, even if that may be at the cost of our own party or ideology looking bad. Marx did hold anti-semitic views (see: www.philosophersmag.com/opinion/30-karl-marx-s-radical-antisemitism) and I, whilst not on the far left, respect your views and how articulately you express them, but I feel that those on the far left, especially those who identify as Marxists should be critical of Marx's anti-semitism and acknowledge this - before people start spouting anti-semitic bigotry. Because maybe this explains why many Jewish Labour members have received anti-semitic abuse.
I would watch and share a video on a critical analysis of why so many Jewish people have experienced antisemitism in the Labour Party, which has increased massively since 2015 when Corbyn became leader. I love new media platforms such as your own & think Ash is very intelligent but find your own unequal coverage re antisemitism in the past few days to be dishonest. When people speak out against bigotry we should believe their experiences, and spend much more time condemning their experiences than defending our own world-view, as Bastani has been doing. But still I do appreciate this informative video, and yes wide representation of Muslims is vital, along with shaming bigots like BJ.

The main reason why Tories fear Islam is because of its egalitarianism and moral standards as divine rights , not because of a few extreme events in the U.K which on proper investigation would be found to have emanated from all backgrounds.
For that matter, is not racism , extremism itself? Especially, as we live in a world that becomes increasingly globally connected?
The thing about racism is that it keeps elitist power structures in place and Islam cannot accept the oppressive, unmerited injustice of that.
Indeed, it is a categorical statement/command that a state of oppression is worse than a state of war(though of course, what is oppressive to one group may well be liberating to another depending on the moral competence). If the elites actually ruled judiciously then Islamic followers would might tolerate that for a while they did various dynasties.
However, monarchic , autocratic , police-state structures are contrary to a system of governance 'by mutual consultation' i.e. a democratic process amongst the public which Islam advocates very clearly. So, yes Islam is a threat to the abuses of power that arise within self-privileged entities.

There is a lot of coverage about anti semitism but must admit I'm not clear how this came about and why JC seems unable to get on top of it. He doesn't come across as the type to be tolerant of any form racism but he seems to be cited as the cause of the problem. Can you do an objective video to breakdown why JC is has become so associated with this. Is it because of his stance on Israel? Is it a failure of the internal workings of the labour party?
