    "Very seldomly are brands or individuals just going to knock on your door and magically say, 'Hey, I really need your services'. You need to do the ground work at the beginning. You need to get the boots on, go into the field, and make that work happen for yourself." - Peter McKinnon
    Oh man, that gave me the chills. A total mindset game-changer.

      Daniel Schiffer dont you think thats overstating the obvious? Numerous people have long said the same thing about breaking into a number of fields. Not sure that rises to mindset game changer or being chills worthy. Unless you were being sarcastic in which case, my bad.

    I've gone from being an occasional hobbyist photographer to a professional freelancer in like half a year, and one of the things that got me there was doing free gigs. I took photos at an event, which lead to the next event, which lead to me doing an event for my university, which lead to them paying me to do a staff photoshoot.. you get the idea. Every step you take, no matter how small, will ultimately amount to something and for me it helped putting me in a position where companies are now asking me to do shoots for them, which is mindblowing considering the fact that at the beginning of this year I hardly used my camera.
    Anyway there's my little addition to this video, in case anyone needed any more confirmation that doing free stuff might actually be useful!

      This was two years ago, but I want you to know I needed this comment today! I have been using my Nikon D5100 for 8 years now and I finally have decided to upgrade and really start moving to a more professional realm. Seeing all of the professionals bash newbies discourages me daily. I truly needed this to keep me motivated. My new camera should be here in a couple of days and I'm doing photos for a girl in my area in February. Going to be practicing daily until then!!

    I agree with the working for free part. I've been shooting for free for nearly 8 months and I'm starting to get recognition and getting paid for my services. This happens just sometimes but I'm happy with it anyway because I'm seeing progress in both my art and my career, although sometimes it can be discouraging, I think it's completely worth it!
    Great video, as always! 😊

  • @socratesgavriel9108

    I think there is a bit of a difference between working for free for something that you are passionate about (the example you use you reached out to them) and someone reaching out to YOU for a job expecting you to work for "exposure". Doing what you said I 100% agree putting in the work, but if someone is reaching out to you expecting you to work for exposure bucks, your time is worth something, and I don't necessarily think that's acceptable, it happens a lot.

    • @chelseamiller5568
      @chelseamiller5568 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I totally agree, I was a bit bummed to see the title that you SHOULD work for free. I definitely think partnerships, service swaps, and offering to do a solid for a brand because you love them and it might lead to benefit you in some way is totally acceptable but allowing people take advantage of your hard work and time with little or no benefit suuuucks.

    • @moctezumacadenas1510
      @moctezumacadenas1510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was bummed to see him sending out this type of message. I think the way he has come across his opportunities and successes are very unique. And although he explained all the "footwork" he put into reaching success, it does not happen like this for everyone. It is very rare, especially when everything in this digital age has a life span of 1 or 2 taps or swipes. After that, it is forgotten . I think if you have a talent (photography, graphics, painting..etc..) you should be paid if people truly and genuinely like your work and aesthetics. A lot of "influencers", TH-camrs, Instagrammers, etc. think it's so easy to just reach out to their following for services, photos and material for their social media outlets in exchange for "exposure", tags, shoutouts. What a lot of people don't realized is how the FTC is really cracking down on people like this for not disclosing, properly crediting, and quite frankly - FLAT OUT TAX EVASION. So in short, PAY ARTISTS... #nofreelogos #nofreephotos #nofreework

    i think i'm one of the few people who is in LOVE with the new lightroom CC... i'm not a professional photographer but i love editing and it's just got enough stuff so i can do it anywhere (because, honestly, i'm always on the go and never at my desk). i used to have to back up photos till i could sit down and do them "properly", now BOOM: connect SD card via usb-c card reader to my phone, copy my raws, copy my usual preset, make adjustments (fricking love that mobile now has brush♥) and i'm done! and if i really want to give it some love or i want to show it to people i photograph then i can pull it up on the computer. I honestly just love it so much.

    Dammit Pete, them hats go quick huh? Amazing with the new merch definitely gonna get some!!
    As a respons to your making money part. I saw your channel about 6 months ago, while visiting my family in Argentina. I was blown away and inspired! I decided to go for it full force, when i got back home. The first 3 months I worked my ass off for free.. Just getting my hands on anything as far as videos go. Did so much different stuff for free. An Awesome and hard experience. I can now tell you that 6 months after I saw your first video.. I now just quit my job and got a full time videoproductioncompany based in Copenhagen. Aaaaand I'm going on my first paid trip with a week's salary to Los Angeles tomorrow for a week..still can't believe that to be honest.
    I cannot thank you enough for the motivation, inspiration and just amazing Content! I will see you and Matti in 2018 at some point I'm sure of it! I will do whatever it takes!

    For everyone that doesn't want to spend the money on Lightroom: Use Darktable!
    Darktable is free, available for Mac, Windows and Linux, and often better than Lightroom.
    Many professional Photographers use it because it has excellent workflow and go way more in depth than Lightroom. But it is also very easy to use with some functions that combine the more in-depth tools in one. I've spent a couple hours with Darktable and am pretty happy with my edits already.

    So about that making money with photography.. i've been doing some festivals and after a while i started getting extras up to also getting paid a little. But to be honest that's only because they showed much interest in my edits because i have a really low end camera with just the kitlens (1200D with 18-55mm). Problem is, the input i was able to do wasn't going to get me a real payday so most of it was just for fun, free festival, working on my hobby etc., now i'm a little bit stuck, since i don't make much money and the photos i make have a cap i can't go over with the gear i own right now, how am i going to climb further to be able to buy better gear? I barely make enough money to sustain myself through college but i really want to pursue this, so what is the best way to do that?

    • @jamesskintauy6773
      @jamesskintauy6773 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better gear (mostly) will not improve your photography, just make it easier. When starting out or even when you are established, look for used gear. With so many camera upgrades, you can get great used gear at a discount. Many of the lenses I use now I purchased used (some were pretty expensive, like the 70-200 2.8). If I see a good deal on a used lens or body I need, I will jump on it. A good place to go with lots of reputable sellers and buyers is the Fred Miranda buy sell forum. I have gotten several good deals there and the equipment was always in the condition stated or better.
      To keep costs down, consider inexpensive prime lenses. Canon and Nikon both make very good 35, 50 and 85mm F1.8 lenses that can really add to your photography and they are, relatively, cheap.
      If you are good (and it sounds like you are) just start asking for more money. Tell them that photography equipment is not inexpensive and your skills are worth paying for. If they disagree, what have you lost? You can likely keep the relationship while looking for other paying customers.
      Also, look at event photography. It is a good way to jumpstart any start up photography business. Find places that need a photographer that don't have one. You would be amazed at some of the places you can find paying customers. Once you have the money for lights and a backdrop you can schedule mini-sessions to create your own "events" Pair with a charity, give them some of the proceeds (a small amount or more depending on the opportunity) so you have a cause to promote. A cause opens up people's pocket books.
      Contrary to popular opinion, there is money in this business, it just takes time to build. Best of luck.

    • @chelseamiller5568
      @chelseamiller5568 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe some assisting jobs? A great way to learn a lot and make money at the same time! Reach out to some local photographers who might need a hand and see what they say! I was definitely stunted by people telling me that I didn't need high end gear to make good photography but I found myself so frustrated and discouraged by my images... When I finally upgraded to pro gear I could have cried for months I was so happy with my images. Things that I could dream up I could finally start realising in camera. I keep my gear to a minimum and almost always buy second hand. It doesn't have to cost you millions but it does make a difference. Also I got a lot of miles out of my third hand 5D mii that I bought so it was definitely worth it.

    once you are being known as the no payment guy, you will always stay the no payment guy.
    There are too many wannabes that will do your work as soon as you try to charge money suddenly.

      I don't know how it is in the US, but in Europe no one will take you serious as Mr. FreeOfCharge. And once you ask for payment you are replaced for some other waiting Freeman. Exept you are doing something very unique - but in most cases no charge for good work is prefered to Full Charge for better work.

    • @jamesskintauy6773
      @jamesskintauy6773 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think what Peter suggested is not out of bounds. He is doing creative projects that help hone his skills for a product or service he is interested in. There is intrinsic value just in that. If some business stems from it, which I think it is entirely possible, that is a bonus and should be viewed in that light. Remember this "free" work is completely unsolicited so you didn't actually offer something for free. The free part stemmed from a request by the business. I believe he could have refused right there and asked for payment, but he chose not to.
      In general, I think it is a no no to provide free work for something you would not otherwise do for your own needs. For example, I have started taking action photos at dog agility events to improve my skills as an action photographer. I use these skills all the time for my regular clients. If someone asked me for a copy of a photo I took at the event, I will normally provide a watermarked for social media file if they email me a request and agree to adding them to my mailing list. If they wanted full resolution photo(s) for print, I would charge my normal (high) price for the file. This frequently ends up in social media follows, especially Instragram, that leads to more exposure for me. I would not do this if there were a professional photographer taking photos at the event. So, to summarize, I see little harm in this and I don't think it diminishes the profession or damages what I can charge my regular clients.

    I absolutely love this advice. People need to understand that most people do not know what it is that you do as a graphic designer/photographer/coder etc. You need them to appreciate your work first, then you're on the right path to turning appreciation into money. Long-term partnerships make you much more money than 1 time transactions. Value is in the eye of the beholder, and once people value YOU... YOU = $$$.

      Love it. If you work for free in the online spere at least (not limited to), you get paid back 10 fold in influence, attention, and trust. Things that you can't feel directly, but work towards a higher purpose I guess. Things you can monetize in the future but it feels way more positive and less transaction based. Give a lot, receive a lot. It's a good feeling and a positive thing.
