- In this video, we talk to Steve Lukather's guitar tech Jon Gosnell. Who explains Steve Lukather's amp and pedalboard set-up while on tour with Toto and Ringo and his All Starr Band.
Luke is using the TC SCF (Stereo Chorus Flanger): www.tcelectron...
And the Flashback 2 Delay: www.tcelectron...
Hats of TC for showing a pedal board packed with other manufacturer's pedals alongside your own.
Thank you 😉
Agree with Colleague. Class! @@tcelectronic
@@tcelectronicno need to thank him. Normal people does normal things.😉
I reckon most manufacturers would be happy to have a slot on there😉
100%. Confidence is based on performance. They make great stuff and so do others. We are blessed.
Jon is a true legend; he is better known to repair Steve's pedalboard on a middle of a show. A true professional and as I can see an awesome guitarist.
that face at the camera when he bends a note!.. epic AF!
15:15
He needs to start his on merch line with a screen grab of that on a tshirt
Great to see that LUKE still plays my RODENBERG 789SL Steve Lukather Overdrive over years which has absolutely the same sound as the newer RODENBERG SL-OD Steve Lukather overdrive.
The SL-OD is possibly my favourite pedal on my board, it's very special!
I love my SL-OD but I also like the big "build like a tank" 789L. Is it still available?
Finally this man gets the exposition he deserves , 'cos many time he solves technical issues in a rush in a brillant way as the pro he is . Despite that he can play the guitar seriously , hats off Jon !
There’s great techs, then there’s Jon, the GOAT!!! Had no idea he could play like that, too!!! Damn!!!😳🤯👏🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶
So, as a delay nerd, HUGE shootout to Gosnell for actaully demoing each delay alone. Thank you!
agreed! refreshing...wish neal schon tech would do this, been trying to figure his out forever
Toto has created its own music genre. Dave and Luke, I'll never forget you guys in 1991, performing in Buenos Aires. We came to see you "mellow" out with songs like "Africa" and "99," but we were blown away by the heavy rock & roll and the incredible energy emanating from you. Steve, wow man... He truly knows what he does. Right in your face, until you say enough. My guitar hero for ever! It was worth every peso I paid and then some. Since that day, I discovered the real Toto behind the curtain of the so-called "music industry."
Toto is multi genre.
Honestly, this is the best rig rundown and in depth explanation of Luke's pedalboard and gear that I've seen. I think it stresses the importance of always remembering your pedalboard and FX are there to add to or accentuate the parts or licks your already playing, and not make your playing about that pedal or fx. I think there's alot of players that get this part backwards. They go and buy all these pedals and then switch through them endlessly searching for some phantom tones. Create the music first, and then spruce it up a bit with some fancy stomp boxes. Don't use fancy stomp boxes to try'n create music.
True, but there’s always space for tonal exploration and, in fact, it can often generate inspiration for sound. But, the core of what you’re saying seems true, at the end of the day it’s about the music, but don’t be so dogmatic as to leave exploration on the table.
When you put the cart b4 the horse, you get nowhere. ❤
We need more Rig Rundowns with the artist/tech demoing it
Factual information
Only reason Jon is doing this is because Luke couldn’t explain it.
I love that particular version of his Luke guitar.
Great to hear Jon play! He's got a fine touch!
thank you for actually playing the guitar so we can HEAR the tones! huge pet peeve when rig rundowns spend 20 minutes showing gear and never plays a note. much appreciated.
That Bogner sounds tremendous. Nice simple rig. It sounds great with just the amp and reverb.
Great interview. The tech did a great job there. Bravo to him !!
Interviewer : so i just wanna a-
Guitar tech : shreds and looks at camera
Borderline painful - the tech, the cameraman, the sound. And I LOVE Lukather's studio sound from the 70s..
That guitar tech knows his onions. Great presentation.
Jon built the board and has made Lukes boards since 2015.
This is GOLD! Thanks for uploading
Excellent Rig Rundown! That is the best MusicMan Luke model ever!
I loves my TC Flashback 2, in stereo "Lets Dance" setting, after a Digitech Obscura (for my short lo-fi ). Great video and hats off to Jon
More of these please!
Always loved the TonePrint idea. I can spend hours going through tone print presets on the app. Yet still use it as a normal pedal if I want. So much fun.
Ah man, love Steve Lukather! Thank you for the rundown!
This was very interesting video. I really appreciate the way how Jon explained the setup of world famous guitarist.
So cool to see Jon go over such an iconic guitarist's rig. Hey Katie, looks like you're not the only great guitarist in the family. ;-)
What a glorious sounding rig!
This is the guy who repairs Lukes pedalboard power supply on the Luxembourg concert in the middle of I'll be over you song. The man is a true legend
Yeah, that was a great demonstration of a master guitar tech at work.
That was the most amazing save of all time 😅
He’s a guitar tech for Steve Lukather
i just became stress just watching him tried to figure it out th-cam.com/video/F9XQcd9UuRw/w-d-xo.html
In a world of Fractals, be a Bogner!
Layering up those delays sounds awesome . I don't think I've seen that before . Bet it sounds really awesome in stereo in person. Appreciate the content guys.
It’s trying to recreate his rack which had 3 delays.
2 were panned left and right then he also had another doing a circular delay.
Steve lukather and Dann Huff two of my favorites
Fantastic ! Great Job TC.
Thank you 🙂
I have only seen Steve play live with Ringo and his all-star band. never got to see Toto. Steve sounds amazing live.
A Most Incredibly Brilliant Musician Steve is Great to see how he Manifests his Sound Thank you!
Luke is the daddy of hot licks, riffs and solos!
Great episode 😎🤓
Luke's tone is absolute perfection.
best solo delay and tone you can get out of Flashback: Tape Delay set as a dual echo delay with dotted eight into quarter of a note..I have that as always on! it is amazing even for rhythm, with the mix a bit lower. TC Flashback 2 rocks!
Those "Hardwire" series of pedals from Digitech were really good. Too bad they stopped making them.
digitech should bring em' back!
Literally playing through Luke's rig... doesn't sound like Luke. I think that's a lesson for all of us right there.
indeed!
Come on, the sound is exactly the same. Some of the licks are just different
@@dstfno
"Even if you have the same gear as I do, you won't sound like me."
- Steve Lukather
Perfect demo !! 🔥🔥🔥
I thought Steve was a straight amp kind of guy. Great to see all these "any player" pedals he uses. So down to Earth. The board is pretty cool. Great job.
He was big time into rack effects and preamps in the late eighties and nineties.
Steve’s best sounds where 90s I’ve seen him 10-15 time and his sound has never been anywhere near as huge 3D dynamic - as those big rack days !!
His sound used to surround you and bounce around the auditorium!
His sound is so one dimensional these days his playing me still awesome !
Wish he’d do some comparisons !!!
Bring back the rack Steve !!! 🎸❤️🎸
@@lukather1 I read somewhere that Effects Loops started to be featured on certain amps on Steve's request.
@@alejandroaguilar4693 I think he plays into the mix far better now. He's not a bandwidth hog. Very selfless in his tone. You don't need a full spectrum wall of sound when you are part of a team.
@@alejandroaguilar4693Had his rack going until 2011.
Luke loves his "grease" ! The man!
Ha! The Echosex is always on. Good to know, I have had a few different Gurus delays but not the original 2. I might have to try to snag one used
Great gear run down!
Brilliant how Jon imitates Luke's style, licks and rhythm, its a tall order
Luke - In my top 5 all around guitarists of all time!
Great job what kind of bogners ?
Just rewatching in April ‘24 and realising TC hinting at the 2290 pedal to replace the Hardwired delays
He’s using both.
The 2290 is song specific.
Fantastic❤
The guitar is so beautiful!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Luke III BFR "grapes of wrath"?
That’s my type of clean tone!
Guessing that rain cheque item was the 2290P delay pedal?? 😉😉
Whats the song at 12:35 when he clicks the chorus on? thats a nice riff and sound.
Massive thanks to TC and guitar tech Jon for the demo, refreshing to see such a straight forward set up.
Toto - Orphan
thank you boss @@1275porsche
Cool stuff - is the volume pedal last in line (🤘🏽) after everything else on the board?
No, after the drives and boosts, going into the front of the amp. At 14:40 you see the tech push down the volumepedal and you hear a click that's repeated by the delay.
Delays are in the fxloop of both amps btw.
@@AlexGroen For sure, but as far as the pedals that go straight into the input (not the FX loop) of the Bogner, the volume pedal is the last stop?
@@riffs66 I think so yes. That's how he controls how his sounds cleans up
Great video explaining each singel delay. I wonder if the Bogner is set to serial loop as otherwiese the delays in series wont be fed with the dry and only delaying the delay in front. Or is this the magical key?
Cant wait to see what could possibly replace the hardwire delays from TC !
That’s a beautiful guitar Steve has.
I want that MusicMan guitar. That is BEAUTIFUL.
F'ng hell those Bogners sound good
Fantastic!!!!❤🙌
Curious, what happened to the Xotic Compressor? What’s Steve using for compression? FOH? Love Steve for many years. He’ll always be my guitar God.
Just curious.....What happened to the "Luke" Distillery pedal?
Please a Bogner Ecstacy Ampworx
So is the replacement for the Digitech’s the new 2290 p? Is that what they were thinking?
He’s using both.
Wow Lukes Tech can play
Most techs can. It's not surprising.
Haha mate, my Tech was a Bass player and he only used one finger to slide up & down the frets, but he knew how to set up guitars
Damn bruh kept eye balling the camera when he played. That was freaking me out!
That Bogner sounds SICK..
How many delays do you want?
Steve: Yes!
He used 2 PCM 42s and a PCM 70 in his rack days.
The tripple delay thing reminds me of the Van Halen circular delay trick?
Luke was doing it before Ed.
20:30 a PCM-Style circular delay...? Oh man.... that would be awesome a.f.!!!!
Ah nothing sounds like the PCM ! - pure 90s !
with tap tempo
Quality 😊❤️🎸
Beautiful 'Music Man' guitar but I have never liked the 'blade' toggle for the humbuckers. Prefer the Gibson toggle. Magnificent guitar. SL uses a LOT of pedals.
Why too little footage of him stepping on pedals?
There a 4 th, 8th, 16th, and half Time or or a dotted 4th(?) Delay in a aproporiate Tempo of the Songs, i think. Make sense.
Thats a pretty killer soundin bogner! Ecstacy 101B
I think its the Helios. It is not an Ecstasy 101B cause I have one!
He used to use 101b
In the earlier Toto material, Steve sounded like he was using an old EchoPlex for echo?
3 minutes in sounds like Dann Huffs rig on the first Giant album.
That tone is what wet dreams are made for!!!!
I hear a noise gate?? Is there one?
No
No longer using the Tone Concepts Luke pedal?
Was ist das rote Pedal neben dem Rodenberg ?
Beautiful 'Music Man' guitar but I have never liked the 'blade' toggle for the humbuckers. Prefer the Gibson toggle. Magnificent guitar. SL uses a LOT of pedals.
And then you look at Phil Collen with his 'Jackson PC 1's Phil hardly uses any pedals - perhaps some trickery behind the stage from his guitar tech but the PC 1 gives you everything.
I assume Jon could play the show? just in case? 😅
With the full sound of the band, he could step on 808s, 909s, delays, it doesn't matter. It's the feel under the fingers, ride the volume with natural amp tube breakup, done. he could do without 90% of this stuff and not one person would hear the difference in the audience.
I hear ya. A good drive tone, a delay for ambiance, maybe a boost and a chorus. Covers just about any regular gig.
I think the TC flashback is plugged in MONO, but talking about ping-pong sound? Anyway, this video shows the best explanation on his pedal board.
Each one is going into the effects return of each amp
The amp on the left is being used for its power amp only left side stereo.
The right amp is being used for its power preamp and power amp, right side stereo.
Doesn‘t he mention the Rodenberg pedal?
That's a ton of gain, he's plugged into the hot channel with gain knob one notch from dimed
Gosnell plays a mean guitar and I hope everyone has seen the video where he saves the day by swapping out a faulty 5 year old power supply during "I'll be over you"?
Really Cool
The bogner preamp is set pretty clean lol,,way beyond crunch 😅
Gain at 3 o clock 😁
Did they mention the two digitechs? What were they?
Delays
As Jon says Hardwire delays.
Wonder why they pulled the xotic sp comp off the board.
It’s under the board as it always on.
What is the red pedal next to the Rodenberg
Jauernig Electronics The Bombastortion Jeff Kollman signature overdrive pedal
Cool Video!
Is the toneprint for the flashback already available?
No.
His are going into the 2290 pedal.
Tom Hanks is Luke's tech?
wow. there is some serious gain staging going on. Funny enough, it doesn´t sound muddy at all!
interesting rig... I only wish I could set a stereo setup and use it in a gig... one can wonder 😂😂
Jon has made some updates to the rig since we filmed it, and he is now running it in stereo 😉
Tech's got tasty licks!!!
MXR univibe FTW
You might wanna get your audio tech to tape that Sennheiser 906 in place.
