Atreus stabbed Baldur with mistletoe. In the myths, Loki disliked perfect Baldur, and used an arrow of mistletoe, the one thing Frigg (or Freya) did not make Baldur immune to, to kill him. The serpent said the boy seemed familiar to him. Loki is Jormungander’s father. The ship Kratos and Atreus escape Hel in is the Ship of Nails, the ship Loki is destined to sail at Ragnarok to bring down the gods, who in the game killed his people.
Holy freaking god of war my mind is blown right now.

Loki didnt actually use the arrow himself, he tricked Baldur's blind brother Hod to shoot him as an honor to his immortality

More like Baldur got 'accidentally' stabbed by the mistletoe on his quiver strap when he punched Atreus in the gut. You make it sound like Atreus wielded it.

    • @drasilisk2895
      @drasilisk2895 ปีที่แล้ว +344

Yeah, that's sadly what breaks Freya's likeability/moral justifications for me. She says she's made mistakes but clearly doesn't mean it, else she would have broken the spell. Even seeing that Baldur is still miserable a century after she imposed the spell on him, she continues to insist that she knows better and does everything she can to prolong the source of his suffering.
By trying to save Baldur she creates his intense hatred for her, which is what leads to Kratos killing him.

@@drasilisk2895 It’s difficult. Wanting to protect your child, especially one destined to die is completely understandable and justified. Robbing them of all physical sensation to do so and refusing to undo when they describe the torture of it… I can absolutely sympathize with wanting to keep someone safe so badly you ending up hurting them, but Baldur can’t bring himself to see any good in it, because he doesn’t care if he dies, so long as he feels.
I don’t exactly blame her for trying, and she was willing to take the consequences of her actions. The problem is, Kratos wasn’t. Kratos is an eternal wild card in everyone else’s story. She could’ve never predicted his behavior.

It's taken me three days to finish it, and I have fallen in love with the story and characters so much(I also want to learn a lot more about Norse mythology). Now I get to jump right into watching the sequel! After all the twists at the end of this I am super excited to start that and see where the story goes.

The fact that Kratos is like "Come here boy lemme tell you a story" after Freya kinda threatens Kratos with the knowledge she knows that Atreus doesn't is so cool. I love how Kratos goes from not letting Atreus know anything and being naive to telling his son everything so that no one has that power over him and he can have a stronger relationship with his son.

  • @Mr.Finklebottom
    @Mr.Finklebottom ปีที่แล้ว +190

Also, Atreus being Loki explains why he was depicted with wolves around him. Those wolves were likely Fenrir and Fenrir's sons, Skoll and Hati. Fenrir is the son of Loki, as is Jormungandr. Another thing it explains is the fact that Atreus could so easily read, and speak at the very end, the giants' tongue.

Small details about this game that I love, now that this is the last video and spoilers are essentially moot by way of age: Kratos stops using slang and is very drawn out and blunt(No contractions, short sentences whenever he can afford them) because he's speaking Nordic, not Greek. Like Atreus says, "You can already speak it, why not learn to read it?" Kratos has no idea what characters are saying in another language(The first Ogre you fight, Jormmungandr, the Dark Elves) and there are no subtitles for that because he's not Really listening to them, but you *do* get them for Atreus and Mimir because Kratos is always focusing on what they say, especially in combat where they call warnings. Baldur has the World Serpent's coils tattooed on his back. Freya has Hawk feathers in her hair, hinting at her ability to shape into one(Her house is also like a burrow, and has wooden trim like a bird's nest). When going down the River to get the Blades, you pass the first Dock you start the game at. If you didn't break the stave in that specific spot, the magic in the boat probably would have fried and left Kratos swimming, they really missed no details. On the painted wall of the Giants, up at the top is Mimir and his tree, both symbolizing that he was up high, and his role on the journey, because his head is highlighted in gold. Freya struggles most in the Final Battle with pulling the Chisel from the giants head, because the spell she's under prevents her from harming both living AND dead, so damaging the Giants Corpse probably put her under strain from it...meaning if she follows through on the "Parading your broken body to every corner of every realm" it would be agonizing for her, so if she really does, that's some dedication. The World Serpent doesn't actually spit the ax back at you, he just opens his mouth and the Ax comes flying because it is enchanted to return. Mimir only blinks the eye he still has, until both are restored. The World Serpent is so helpful, says he recognizes Atreus, because Loki is Jormmunganders father, and likely knew of this journey. In actual Norse Mythology, we aren't actually sure if Loki is real. His only mentions are from after Christianity kinda steamrolled that part of the world. So explaining that by having him be the son of a god from Greece and a Giant? Clever as FUCK! That's all for now!

I like how they obscured Atreus real identity in such a clever way. Faye was short for “Laufey” the whole time. And Loki’s father is Farbauti the “Cruel Striker”, it wouldn’t be a stretch for the Norse to refer to Kratos as such. Then add the fact that the World Serpent mentions recognizing Atreus, who is actually his father Loki, and how that fits in with the myth of Jormungandr being sent back in time before his own birth, how Atreus’ mistletoe broke Baldrs spell (similar to the myth) etc etc they did a really good job at building this story and making sense of Kratos place in the Norse world

This makes Baldur's weird behavior at the house make more sense. He kept saying things like you already know what he wants, he thought Kratos knew because he thought he was a giant. I also remember him saying at one point during that 1st fight, I'm not my brother. I need to rewatch it to decide what I think it means, but it sounds like he was trying to reason with Kratos, like when he said I just needed answers & tell me what I want, pain stops. Everyone know about Thor's essential genocide of the giants (per Odin's orders. It's important to remember that part), it sounds like Baldur was saying give us the information we want & I won't kill you.

Signs of Atreus being Loki from a Norse nerd: (non-exhaustive)
-His mother being named Faye, similar to the name Laufey, the mother of myth Loki. (Also similar to Farbauti, his Giant father)
-His animal related bow attacks, particularly the fact the first one brought wolves.
-Everything about the mistletoe set-up would key most Norse nerds in on who Atreus is. In myth, Loki orchestrates the death of Baldur at his blind brother Hodr's hand. Frigg had gotten everything to swear never to harm Baldur except mistletoe. Loki learned this, crafted a mistletoe dart, and guided Hodr to throw it when the others made a game of throwing weapons at Baldur.
    -Jormungandr being familiar with him.
-Using his words to hurt Sindri the way he did.
-His fighting being more calculating than brute force.
-Many comments on him being very smart.
I'm sure there are many more I caught but can't think of at this moment!

If you look back on the game knowing the Loki twist there's so many moments of foreshadowing that you could completely miss until then. The one with Brok you mentioned, him figuring out mistletoe was Baldur's weakness, him being able to speak to Jormungandr for seemingly no reason, in GOW Ragnarok, there are things that line up with his mythology as well, him and heimdall hating each other and Kratos killing Heimdall is because in the actual Ragnarok myth, Loki and Heimdall kill each other, him and Thor going on missions together is a fun nod to their shenanigans in the actual mythology, the only player missing from Loki's lore is the goddess Hel, but that would be kinda hard to do in this story with Loki being a kid, but it does stay true to the prophecy of Loki having Hel's army at Ragnarok, but Hel herself is absent.

Holy shit, it actually made a ton of sense now. Loki in the original Norse myths was never the adopted son of Odin. That's just the MCU version. Loki's ties with odin was actually unclear in the mythology, with the popular beliefs that he's blood brothers with Odin. His alligience to the Aesir was also never clear. In the myth, Loki's parentage was said to be of the giants, and faye was also a giant! Loki also somehow fathered three irregular children, the world serpent, a giant wolf called fenrir and Hel the half rotten lady (ruler of, you guessed it, hell). This explains why the world serpent was familiar to Atreus whem they first met, it's since he time travelled from the future! This shit got me hyped up. In the original Norse myth, Ragnarok started when Loki tricked Baldr's blind brother to shoot him with a mistletoe arrow. In the game Atreus broke Baldr's gift/curse with the mistletoe on his bowstring, which lead to Kratos killing Baldr! And then the snow fell. In both the myth and this game, Ragnarok begins with a long winter. Holy shit, It's all clicks! obviously the game took some creative liberty, but it still makes sense.

Yes. Fun fact, faye was the5 nickname kratos gave to her by kratos, as spartans have a habit of using nicknames instead of actual names, to shorten the sentences they speak, hence using "boy" and "head". Also if im right, farbauti means 'cruel striker' right? Fits kratos its awesome

Seeing this again after the end of Ragnarök is great.
    Spoilers:
To think Faye "arguing" with the other giants was that she didn't agree with the way this prophecy was to end, so she litterally smashed that which was set in stone and gave her live to set another path in motion.
The Nornes say there is no fate, only choices and the big ones are basically unchangable. A big change in the path ahead requires a big change in the person who will make the decision.
So Faye sent Kratos and Atreus on a painful and dangerous journey that would make them grow in character and relationship, to ultimately change one detail about the prophecy. Ragnarök came to pass exactly how it was predicted, the only change is that Odin is in Kratos place. It took this much to change one detail. Going against "fate" seems expensive.
Imagine Kratos wasn't forced to open himself to Atreus by this journey. He probably would never have told him any of this. Baldur was looking for Faye, so the confrontation was inevidable. Kratos would have found a way to kill Baldur, while Odin would come to Atreus to tell him "the truth" (and a lot of lies). That was probably what the prophecy with him serving Odin was all about.
If the cold and hard Kratos from the game's beginning told Atreus not to go to Odin, he wouldn't have thought twice about it I suppose. Lying to or harming your children for their protection has never done any good in God of War.
Kratos would have pulled a second Olympus on Asgard to get Atreus back, leading Raganrök as the God of War (instead of Týr) and ultimately dying to save Atreus. That's my guess.
I think nothing less than Faye's death would have had enough of an impact to change Kratos' and Atreus' hearts. All this for one important decision that Kratos makes in the end, leading to a slightly alternative outcome.
The writing in this is marvelous and all this while keeping the basics of norse mythology more intact than any other modern story I've seen so far.

And thus concludes the adventures of Boi, Dad Of Boi, and Head Of Belt... for now!
However, when Kratos inevitably has to fight Thor, I fully believe that Kratos will be forced to retreat for the first time ever. Think of it like this: Baldur was a significant foe, but he's just an angy boi with extra toughness. Thor, on the other hand, is the warlord whose genocides are the stuff of literal legends (at least that's how he is portrayed in this). Plus, Thor would have a lot of anger specifically toward Kratos and Atreus, as they are responsible for the deaths of his demigod sons.
    Cause for concern.

Interesting tidbit not many people notice: If you look at Kratos on the prophecy wall, you see the runes spell out "Farbauti". In Norse mythology, this is the name of Loki's father, though he's mentioned only 5 times, and always in relation to Loki being his son. The name can mean, among other possible translations, "One who strikes with hostility". As far as I can tell, there are two different possible reasons for this. One: the giants cared little for Kratos beyond his role in prepping Ragnarok and enacting vengeance upon the Aesir, and so simply called him by what he was to do once Loki was ready. Two: the giants saw Kratos as one of their own, fathering their champion and bringing about their great plan, and thus gave him a name in their own tongue.
