So happy to have helped out with this mate, the final video has turned out amazing! Thank you everyone for watching, and any questions please just ask!
As much as I love to hear all the engine's origins and all the railroad history. I love to learn all the economic and military history of Sodor. All the history it has makes Sodor feel even more real.
The idea that the Northwestern Railway was formed as a "oh crap" moment due to the outbreak of the First World War really does explain why their first 5 or so locomotives are a grab-bag of old timers and weird prototypes from all over the UK.
It’s in a similar fashion to how J.R.R. Tolkien pulls out historical references and cultural and crafting that information into something expansive and self contained. Though Awdry is more explicit with his references than the former.
Gotta say, it's ironic how Stanley was the final nail in the Mid Sodor coffin. The one who got turned into a pumping engine to avoid anymore mistakes was ultimately their final one.
This is very simply a HEADcannon, but I like to believe since Tallylyn and Skarloey were identical until painted and would be both No. 1's, the builders simply referred to each by the name of where they would be shipped to. And it just stuck.
@TheUnluckyTug, here's a video idea for you - how did each of the engines get their names? For some it's obvious, e.g. named after builders etc. but I think this would be interesting for cases like this one with Skarloey
On the surface, The Railway Series is a children’s book series. But as you dig deeper, it was the passion project of a railway buff. And at the end of the day, anyone of any age can find some enjoyment from it.
Thats what happens when a Railway Enthusiast (who is excellent at writing and has encountered real life steam trains on the British mainline) writes some Railway Children's books!
Despite being an hour and 22 minutes, I wasn't board once! This is basically like if the IOS book WAS a video. I love it and I always like hearing new stuff we've yet to hear.
My heart goes out to you and your family Tug. I lost my grandfather around the time of your last RWS timeline video and I know the strange mix of feelings that come with losing an older relative but getting to be with family to celebrate their life. Glad to hear you’re all doing okay. Thanks so much for the video
An updated Railway Series timeline video that is more in-depth and with lots of cool illustration edits? A surprise, to be sure... ...but a welcome one.
Great video, now we need another one covering Sodor’s pre-railway history. I would love to hear more about the Kings of Sodor, Battle of Crovan’s Gate, Saint Machan, all that rich history. The dates regarding Old Stuck-Up seem an easy fix: change his number. For my headcanon, I’m using 40143. The story takes place in ‘84, it was withdrawn Jan22,85, and scrapped Sept the following year. Jake Atkinson has a video showing 40143 in BR blue pulling tankers. And if the date is right, this was filmed Sept 1983, before I would have the engine visit Sodor.
Personally my headcanon is the events of _James and the Diesel Engines_ take place between 1981 and 1983. The story "Old Stuck-Up" takes place in early spring of 1981, which makes the ending a bit more poignant given his scrapping that May. Other changes I'd make to that book include having Crossed Lines feature James saying Awdry’s quote of diesels’ double cabs making them two-faced and untrustworthy and involving that in the story, have James be rescuesed by the Works diesels: Den and Dart, but still remain prejudiced, and including a new final story based on Narrow Gauge’s The Truth About Scrap and TheGermanofSodor’s Cruel Irony where James takes a train to the Mainland and meets D261, who is on the verge of scrap, where he realizes diesels are suffering the same fate as steam engines and unnerved by D261’s hindsight and admittance of wrongdoing, which finally makes him drop his prejudice of diesels.
beautiful video, I even got a bit teary eyed at the part where next year will be 80 years of the Railway Series, thank you Tug and may your grandfather fly high in peace
Tug’s videos just keep getting better by the year. Edit: Oh dear, I’m sorry about your grandad Tug. I lost my nana back in March so this year has been a hard one for me. I’m hoping to finally make my next video in the coming weeks.
What… a… video. I was EXTREMELY impressed about the briefest history of Sodor from the beginning of the 19th century and ALL the away to present day. It’s a shame that we’ll never get to see Barry the Rescue Engine and The Austerity Engine in this timeline though (ever since I made a RWS edits about them a few hours ago), but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. I’m sorry about your grandfather’s passing and I hope he’ll find peace. Take care, man and well done.
Fantastic video. I loved The Railway Series, and Thomas and Friends, when I was a kid. I recently purchased a modern collection of those stories for my nephew, so he could enjoy them as well. And I have another personal story to share. Hearing about Flying Scotsman made me smile, as I was on one of the locomtives tours last year, between Edinburgh and Aberdeen and back, as part of it's 100th birthday celebration. My first ever Railway Series book was Enterprising Engines, which Scotsman was apart of. I was 2 years old when I got that book. And there I was, 35 years later, riding the third coach behind the locomotive that started it all for me.
It’s odd seeing just how late it was for Sodor to have a proper, standard-gauge railway. For some context, by the time the first standard gauge railroad was partially built, the United States was in the middle of a Civil War, which involved the prolific usage of trains. What’s more striking is the fact the tunnel leading to Vicarstown had turned out to be a difficult project, especially when - at the same time - the Commonwealth of Virginia had successfully funded and constructed a tunnel through Rockfish Gap, which was - at the time - one of the longest tunnels in the world. If anything, this shows just how dedicated Awdry was to his worldbuilding.
I imagine why these projects were so late is because well Sodor was a very isolated island at the time and they didn't have the funds or resources to handle all of them at once
i'm sad the TVS didn't explore more about the RWS Lore there is just so much of it, it's a gold mine. I'm also sorry to hear about your grandfather, my own passed away in the beginning of September.
12:30 this made me happy to hear for some reason. My grandma always told me about the tay bridge disaster and about how she heard the story when she was young.
I am so glad you’re remastering your original railway series timeline video. That is one of my all-time favorite “ white noise” videos to listen to every time I have work to do, and I’ll be sure to listen in to this one to the very end
Sorry to hear about your Grandfather. It's just been over a year since I lost my Aunty, it still feels like it was only yesterday. I'm eager to watch your update video for your railway, I've been seeing pics on Instagram and it's giving me ideas, sadly my heart is still set on TT:120, which Hornby is still struggling to get off the ground. Here's to many more videos to come and to the 80th Anniversary of the Railway Series.
Another fantastic video tug I love timeline videos as it does show a clearer picture of things. Also the rescanned illustrations look beautiful chef's kiss. So sorry to hear about your grandfather may he rest in peace. Keep up the good work man!
I've always wondered about the lore to Ffarquhar Sheds: -Started out as a single orange shed for Thomas. -Developed 2 additional berths but instead of orange they were lime yellow. -Open shed was added for Daisy. TV series: Smashed by boulder.
Uh, no that's a completely _different_ shed, unless the shed somehow _lost_ a berth! Not only that, it's the wrong location too! That's a _QUARRY!!_ Sheds don't move around from place to place!
i like how that on the snowdon mountain railway, the culdee fell railway's inspiration, they ordered their superheat engines in the mid 1920s and the culdee fell ordered theirs almost 40 years later
"Oh, sure, you get stuck on some random hill ONE TIME and suddenly it's named in your dishonor. As if that weren't bad enough, some guy with a sick child comes along and decides to immortalize the story for the *literal entire world* to hear. It's disgraceful..."
I'm amazed just how extensive and detailed the history is. Some of these events make you think Sodor is an actual place. Occasionally, I had to remind myself that none of this happened in real life. As a history buff, this was fascinating to me. Incredible video as always Tug!
I have no complaints with delays. This was a fantastic update to the timeline. (can't wait for the next Sodor's Finest. I'm hoping for Thomas or a redo of Gordon)

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. I'm sure he's in a better place now. On a lighter note, this was a great video! I always wondered if there was any lore around the Harwick & Cronk Railway. It being horse-drawn all the way up 'til the 1930s is fascinating!
love the edits you did with the images to fit the stories, like how thomas was in his LBSC black livery. looks real odd seeing a red Edward and a green Gordon though, i cant lie!
I used to have a collection of a bunch of the Railway Series Books, I don't know where they went, but watching your videos bring back a HUGE amount of Nostalgia❤
If Neil was sold to the Crovan's Gate Mining Company, and the mining company was sold to the Skarloey Railway, does that mean that if Neil is still bumming around in some shed or something, he'd technically be owned by the Skarloey Railway? If he's ever found, i wonder if he'd be repainted into SR Red...
35:30 I should think that by this point the Vicarstown Railway Museum might've been built and opened for business. Neil, from the Crovan's Gate Mining Company, would become their very first exhibit, followed by many other engines.
Okay, we ALL agree that we need Car merchandise, it’s so SIMPLE! But so beautiful! He looks so original! Hot wheels, you BETTER make a car hot wheels alongside Bertie and Trevor for the 80th anniversary
It's cool how much personality the early railways had despite being completely outside the books. The S&M really was out here throwing haymakers with all those insane plans.
Given the books all take place in real time, it makes sense this is gonna be a lengthy discussion, only a mere half hour wasn’t quite everything, so I really respect you updating that original video with everything recently exposed.
The detail in the island makes me wish there was a game made so you could explore around and see these places. Something like Derail Valley would work well for that.
I loved this! Amazing work, Tug Especially for someone who doesn’t have the railway series books Oh and I am sorry for your loss, don’t worry, your grandfather is in a better place now.
the mystery of that MOD base on the skarloey and those beetle diesels haunts me.... and the fact we NEVER saw the electric engines from peel godred? DESPITE them supposedly being so much older than a lot of the other engines in the series? so much untapped potential
It nice to hear about Sodor island lore and history. Wilbert Awdry really knew how to create such a wonderful place it makes me wonder how sodor would have learned at schools outside of Sodor
lets be honest the culdee fell engines and the peel godred engines deserved so much more, but the culdee fell didnt really have any other exciting stories to offer, so maybe thats why they werent touched on again after one book?
i had no idea about most of that info about the sodor and mainland railway. everything about pre NWR north so rolfs castle is fascinating because there's much more known about the eastern copper belt and western lead belt. i got enamored listening to the failures of the cronk harwick railway of which i just learned about. whoever is keeping the railway series timeline active is a master for recapping something as trivial as the lost records from awdry in the sodor and mainland days to the LMAO comedy about thomas theorists "the car" canon. i was shooting myself laughing at "the car" beating sir handle. this was an excellent follow up to the original video and we're blessed to uncover all that info from the awdry extravaganza
its crazy how the event of awdry 4 is basically considered rws canon, it makes me mad how that was the one event i decided to skip due to personal matters. also sorry to hear about your grandfather, man. my condolences
What a history that Sodor has gone through. Very impressive too. Overall, the more I think about the Railway Series version of the Sodor timeline, the more of the details in it make sense. And I bet we could learn something from these engines and workers who run it, in which they all had a story of their own to tell.
AWESOME video, Tug! I really enjoyed it! Thanks for making this collaboration and explaining the timeline in further detail. You’ve just earned yourself another like.
i still absolutely love the fact you pronounce Wisbech correctly, 90% of the UK pronounce it wrong! I lived there for many years! You might want to check it out because the church that Rev Awdry was in charge of is nearby & has a stained glass window of thomas on it!
I don't know why but I'd absolutely love to see an RWS timeline with real life accidents included. I get it may be hella morbid but idk why I'd love to see a timeline like it.
Great history of the railways of Sodor is fascinating, but the island itself is so much eye opening interesting with non railway subjects is way more fascinating. And I personally like the world building of this island is so incredible that this is amazing subject to leaning about.
28:08 “Henry remained walled up in there for several months” And I imagine it would’ve taken more than a few months to build the new tunnel…how long was the mainline blocked for?! 😂
This is an amazing remake of your timeline video. Its great to hear a little bit more information of the railway series I never heard of. Great Job as always tug. Also, im sorry for your loss, I know how it feels to lose a grandparent. My grandma past in july of this year, and I was devastated but me and the rest of my family moved on but will never forget her. I hope you and your family are doing well after that event ❤
Wow, extremely detailed, but brilliant editing and research! I'm amazed to hear all that history about Sodor in The Railway Series in one lengthy video, with mentions of the books, the Thomas & Friends TV series, and the upcoming 80th anniversary, plus the Flying Scotsman brought back into service and the Skarloey Railway engines visiting the Talyllyn Railway! 😃 By the way, truly sorry to hear about your grandfather; may he rest in peace. Your work truly paid off, Nic.
There's one thing that most other show don't have and the only reason i will always come back to Thomas, and that is the realism and the deep lore from medieval to modern era Also Tug, would you be interested to cover Sodor medieval era. Because medieval Sodor just seem crazy from the battle, the real life people, etc.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the fact that a railway in Peterborough; the Nene Valley Railway, which was the then Peterborough sugar beet railway. Had a blue Hudswell Clark and was Christened the name Thomas by Reverend W Awdry himself in 1971. He is now hauling trains for passengers to this day on the Railway
So happy to have helped out with this mate, the final video has turned out amazing!
Thank you everyone for watching, and any questions please just ask!
Is Billy canon?
Has sodors mainline been electrified? And if so, what is the speed limit for steam, diesel, and electric?
When is the best time to visit the Talyllyn Railway?
So Neil was sold to the CGMC in 1883?, I thought It was 1897?
Where is dowager hatt in this? Shouldn’t she have been married to sir topham hatt l?
I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT TRAINS I’VE NEVER MET BEFORE LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Thomas and Edward were 100% off.
@@lolchipperson11person12Actually STH still had to pay for Thomas and Edward but I imagine they were so cheap that it was practically a bargain deal
Crazy that irl modern day Talyllyn Railway events are considered canon to the overall RWS Timeline. Gotta appreciate how meta this stuff can be.
It’s in a similar fashion to how J.R.R. Tolkien pulls out historical references and cultural and crafting that information into something expansive and self contained. Though Awdry is more explicit with his references than the former.

Even though Thomas and friends books have ended, i still love the lore and timeline videos. ❤
hotdamn this a GOOD video like damn this is why i love TTTE especially the Railway Series like the lore, characthers and stuff are soo fleshed out
The detail in the island makes me wish there was a game made so you could explore around and see these places. Something like Derail Valley would work well for that.
I’m planning to create Sodor in Minecraft.
This is so cool. Not only that, but I wish I could be this invested into both the geography and history of Sodor.
Me 3 years ago: "okay, I NOW know the lore of railway series"
Me Present Day: WAIT WHAT💀💀💀💀
This was a big step up from the previous RWS timeline video! 😄
I loved this! Amazing work, Tug
Especially for someone who doesn’t have the railway series books
Oh and I am sorry for your loss, don’t worry, your grandfather is in a better place now.
It absolutely blows my mind just how much lore the railway series has! It's really impressive
Now this is a video that I would spend 1 hour of my life watching
the mystery of that MOD base on the skarloey and those beetle diesels haunts me....
and the fact we NEVER saw the electric engines from peel godred? DESPITE them supposedly being so much older than a lot of the other engines in the series?
so much untapped potential
As I’ve said in the community post, Splatoon got me hooked on lore, but Thomas perfected lore. 🦑🚂
Sorry to hear about you grandfather. Amazing video.
i had no idea about most of that info about the sodor and mainland railway. everything about pre NWR north so rolfs castle is fascinating because there's much more known about the eastern copper belt and western lead belt. i got enamored listening to the failures of the cronk harwick railway of which i just learned about.
whoever is keeping the railway series timeline active is a master for recapping something as trivial as the lost records from awdry in the sodor and mainland days to the LMAO comedy about thomas theorists "the car" canon. i was shooting myself laughing at "the car" beating sir handle.
this was an excellent follow up to the original video and we're blessed to uncover all that info from the awdry extravaganza
You definitely have to appreciate how much effort Tug puts into his videos
Can't believe THE BryansStuffYT also likes Thomas The Tank Engine
@@MaxMadPlayz I never even heard of this guy before until I came across this comment. He appears to be a bit of a big Roblox TH-camr.
its crazy how the event of awdry 4 is basically considered rws canon, it makes me mad how that was the one event i decided to skip due to personal matters.
also sorry to hear about your grandfather, man. my condolences
What a huge improvement this timeline was since your 2021 version!
Thabk you for bringing back the best moment from the original video, in which everyone gets plastered with a bunch of talking trains
This is where the fun begins.
Good God Thomas has more lore than I thought...
Also R.I.P your grandad
I love that cheeky little Percy is a scab
Just remember he got all this from taking trains 😭🙏
💥🔫🤣🤣🤣
another amazing video!! can't wait for the layout update :D
I'm sorry for your loss, its never easy i know personally
Oh boy. Some diesel engines who came to work on the Skarloey Railway before even Devious Diesel arrived? How many mysterious engines are there?
Love how you mentioned Carr right near the end 👍
I loved the original RWS timeline video, and watching this again with new information was certainly a treat!
i still absolutely love the fact you pronounce Wisbech correctly, 90% of the UK pronounce it wrong! I lived there for many years! You might want to check it out because the church that Rev Awdry was in charge of is nearby & has a stained glass window of thomas on it!
i was also in town a few hours ago haha! 😊
27:07 "I wanted an Atlantic but that beep son of a beep sent me that!" Topham Hatt fumes
I don't know why but I'd absolutely love to see an RWS timeline with real life accidents included. I get it may be hella morbid but idk why I'd love to see a timeline like it.
Another great video. Sorry for the loss of your grandfather.
I’m sorry for your loss.
10/10 Perfect Sodor feels so REAL
Great history of the railways of Sodor is fascinating, but the island itself is so much eye opening interesting with non railway subjects is way more fascinating. And I personally like the world building of this island is so incredible that this is amazing subject to leaning about.
28:08 “Henry remained walled up in there for several months”
And I imagine it would’ve taken more than a few months to build the new tunnel…how long was the mainline blocked for?! 😂
Unless they were already planning to build one for a while before Henry decided to hide in it.
I think we can all agree that fear of the Edward’s exploit incident is why American railroads banned the construction of new camelbacks
I swear to god rev w awdry is a genius because up until now I never realised that dryaw was just an anagram of his last name
As a history guy and Thomas fan, this is amazing, I love it!!
There's one thing that most other show don't have and the only reason i will always come back to Thomas, and that is the realism and the deep lore from medieval to modern era
Also Tug, would you be interested to cover Sodor medieval era.
