As a person who worked in railway. I can tell this person has caused a damage that will propagate over time which will require the rail to get milled or replaced. Cost will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Damage to the wheels are a separate matter.

Think downtime with commodities not moving on that rail and sitting in a car or a warehouse for a few more days + labor for the yard + labor for the crew doing the repair + material cost + inspections, etc etc etc. Infrastructure is expensive. As an ex railway worker, I urge everyone not to put anything on the tracks. Small soft metal as a coin for example isn't "that" bad, but anything like even small rocks could cause damage to the train and people/objects nearby and possibly risk derailment of the train, because maybe suprisingly for some, it's rather easy to derail a train. Just because you might have seen a railway worker put something on the tracks, doesn't mean you can do it too. Some equipment is designed to be placed on the tracks in some ways, but only by a properly trained personnel. General rule is not to come close to the tracks overall if you are not assigned work there and you are not properly trained, cloathed and equipped.

I agree with people not putting stuff on tracks. However, I’ve walked many tracks. You don’t need training or “proper clothes” for this. As long as you’re wearing shoes and clothes, then you already have all of the equipment you need.
I am fairly certain you will be getting a visit from the police for this. You've caused damage that, over time, cause the rail to fail and cause a train to derail. You also likely damaged the train's wheels, so they will need to be inspected and likely replaced. Putting a coin on the rail is one thing, because coins, at lease in the US are made of copper alloys, but the copper will not damage the rail or the train's wheels. This is actually a fairly serious crime. Possibly even a felony.

I've worked on a 200 ton forge and on stress testing metals, steel doesn't fracture without a really substantial force, but a soft nail will happily squash and extrude.

A train derailed in my hometown on the Mississippi river a couple years ago. A hairline crack in one of the rails caused the rail to break and derail the train right in the middle of town. Fortunately no one was injured or killed. The railway runs scanner trucks up and down the rails checking for these cracks on a regular basis. The rail that broke in this case was installed in the 1970's. What this guy just did is criminal vandalism and thats just the first charge. That rail is more likely to fail from the damage and could cause injury or death not to mention expensive loss to the railway.

Some time ago here in the EU, a sabotage on a railroad cost millions because every, train wheel needed to be checked and repairs needed to be done after the damage on the wheels was noticed. Also, that damaged railroad section was out of use for almost a week. It took a while until the reason for the damaged wheels was spotted, it was a relatively small-looking damage on rails which led to a massive inspection and repair operation. Wheels started to wear off slowly because that damage was not big after all, but it was damn expensive.

Messing with train tracks can be _very_ dangerous, especially depending on what train is coming through next. I mean how dumb is it to do this to a passenger train vs doing this to, say...a sand train? @@rhoy6560 as I said, you can crush a pebble (or larger rock) by stomping on it with enough force. they would never let people ride in a train if something like a pebble could derail it. now an iron wedge might be enough to lift part of the train off the track, but there's a good chance the weight of the other cars would re align it.

As a kid I used to put coins on the tracks as trains would come by and flatten the coins. It was cool and no it didn't damage the tracks like in this video.
I remember doing that when I was a kid. About a mile from home there was a rail spur leading into a big industrial facility, the trains were going quite slow. We'd put pennies on the track and come back the next day to find them flattened. Both the track and industrial buildings are long gone.
Coins derailed an army transport train when I was a kid it also was carrying nuclear weapons and three towns were evacuated the teenagers were jailed and charged for the damage just because you got away with it doesn’t mean it’s cool.
Did this as a young boy many times in the Netherlands with my friends: No tape, no damage AND found the nails back. And after a while we were caught by railway police. No talk about damage or danger for passengers. Only about danger for us as young boys on a railway track.

Messing with train tracks can be _very_ dangerous, especially depending on what train is coming through next. I mean how dumb is it to do this to a passenger train vs doing this to, say...a sand train? Although, either way, doing this is a literal crime in the UK, under i) Offences Against the Person Act, and ii) Malicious Damage Act, _both_ of which cover "placing things on the tracks", and can carry upto an unlimited fine, and maybe even life imprisonment, for intentionally endangering lives and damaging trains/equipment.

Поезд не сойдёт с пути из-за гвоздя, дефект тоже незначительный. Я так в детстве с друзьями монетки на рельсы выкладывала и отбегала, ждала пока поезд проедет, потом искали все монетки расплющенные. Жаль в видео не показали, с гвоздем.

I remember as a child i once placed about 25 meters of granite stones on both rails and watched it form a distance, not understanding how bad the dead was i have done. Luckily the train didnt derail. I am still ashamed of it to this day when i think back about it.

As a kid I used to put coins on the tracks as trains would come by and flatten the coins. It was cool and no it didn't damage the tracks like in this video.

I remember doing that when I was a kid. About a mile from home there was a rail spur leading into a big industrial facility, the trains were going quite slow. We'd put pennies on the track and come back the next day to find them flattened. Both the track and industrial buildings are long gone.
I did that with a penny once. It picked the penny up and left behind a copper circle on the rail.
Coins derailed an army transport train when I was a kid it also was carrying nuclear weapons and three towns were evacuated the teenagers were jailed and charged for the damage just because you got away with it doesn’t mean it’s cool.

Многие пишут, что парня надо в тюрьму за порчу рельс. А я считаю ему нужно вручить награду за раскрытие коррупционной составляющей. Явно кто-то сэкономил на качестве рельс, если от простого гвоздя на них остаются вмятины. На хорошем рельсе никаких вмятин быть не должно, так как метал очень прочны на повреждение и изгиб, что гарантирует долговечность. Рельсы, которые на видео со временем будут прогибаться под весом и могут привести к катастрофе.
