  • So, it's that time again. This year, I decided to rank them. Everybody likes seeing numbers. But, it's all misinformation. That is, unless you agree with me. I apologize for the length of this video. That said, I do talk about 20 albums and there are song clips for almost every one. There are chapters. They are your friend.

    Fantastic video and list, Jon. Had to watch a couple of times to really digest. From your descriptions alone we can tell you've listened to and lived with these albums through the year. Not a word wasted, and every minute used perfectly to showcase 20 great releases. Thank you for the clips for each album too, that's no small labour of love. (Oh and the artwork and countdown graphics). Love what you said about YLT though i hope it's not their last on this form. The plaintive honesty of Lachlan Denton is his calling card by now. A lot of other music to love but the Scandinavian album sounds like something i need to explore, and the Rachel Baiman already has a timeless feel to it. Such a positive take on the state of new music, this video, and the evidence here backs your statement up comprehensively. Man you get thru a lot of new music!! Appreciate you doing this, and loving seeing where '24 will take you musically 😊

      I know, David. I knew I was letting you down with this list. I like the Slowdive album. I really like the Wilco album. But stiff competition this year! I didn’t like The National albums, but did still find a few songs to enjoy. I need to listen to the Emma Anderson again. I still plan on doing a favorite reissues video, and I know there will be several you hold in high regard there. Happy Holidays, my friend! ✌🏻

      I could have made a Top Ten of Americana/Country/Folk alone. I almost did, but backed out. Check out Rachel Baiman. Check out Margo Cilker. Check out a guy named Pony Bradshaw (not shown here). Along with Jason Isbell's album, I thought Iris Dement released another really good one. And Lydia Loveless as well!

    I do not normally watch many of these top/favorite albums of the year videos because there are too many to keep up with. But there are a few that I always try to watch. One of them is yours Jon. I am really interested in checking out the El Michaels and Black Thought album. The International Anthem label has never let me down. So far. I am going to give a listen to the Jaimie Branch album. So many interesting albums to check out. I will have to get back to the last ten minutes when I have some free time Jon. I got to run out. A very good Christmas to you and your family. Great list Jon! Clientele, Tubs, En Attendant Ana all high on my list. I’ve streamed but still need to get that Sumos LP. You exposed me to Deep Dyed and I thank you. Wish Ocean Party were still around but love anything Lachlan Denton associated with including this year’s solo album. Some other 2023 records I really dig Whiffs, Lemon Twigs, Beach Fossils and Uni Boys. Happy Holidays!

    • @TheDigitalGramophone
      @TheDigitalGramophone  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Matt! I think the Sumos record is really great. Though nothing groundbreaking, I think they have their own sound. They stand out from a lot of other bands that play their brand of pop rock. I'm glad the Deep Dyed album was one you enjoyed. Have you listened to Pop Filter? It's some of the same folks (including Lachlan Denton) that ran in the same circles as The Ocean Party. They just released their 3rd. It's good, but I wasn't able to spend enough time with it to consider it for this list. I haven't heard Whiffs or the Uni Boys. Will investigate! Good job, I really don't keep up with current music. If it happens to come my way and I like it, it's great. I mostly stream and end up listening to older music. I wish I knew more about editing, that really enhances vids. The sound bytes really help.

Because I’m such a poor orator. So, since I have to edit so much already, I might as well add some elements. I’m actually quite jealous of many of you who can just turn the camera on and one-take it. Thanks for that, Jon. How very professional. Blimey, 45 to 50 new releases this year. I feel you should be getting a medal from the American Federation of Musicians of some such unionised organisation.
    I've done a quick check on my Discogs catalogue. I've added somewhere around 180 records this year, not including the Kenny Knight record I picked up today. Shamefully, out of those only 5 were released this year. If I were to disqualify the two I got because they were dirt cheap on Amazon, that's only 3.
    Mind you, one of those was in your list, so that should count as double, at least.
    What can I say, I'm living in the past. There's far too many records from the last 60+ I need before I really deal with the releases from 2023. I'm reckoning, if I live long enough, I might get to some of those by 2043.
    Nah, I'll check out some of those I liked the sound of.
    Wishing you a great big glittery festive shebang.
    On a side note. I've played brass instruments since I was about 10, and the guitar from 18, but in all those years I've never owned a music stand. Clearly I didn't do enough practicing at home.
    I don't half go on.
    Cheers - Hed

      I really should cut down on my new release purchases. If I'm completely honest with myself, I usually end up trading a bunch of them in after a few years anyway. My goal this year, is to live with albums longer streaming. Decide with 10 I truly want from the year (more than likely my favorites), and just get those. I highly doubt I will stick to that plan. That said, this year was a fantastic year for new music, and I can see myself hanging on to every record in this video.
      I bought over 220 records this year. So, plenty of reissues and used records for me, too. I usually save those for spinning at home. Stream new stuff far more. I think you'd really like the Rachel Baiman if you give it a chance, and aren't too judgmental just because of the Hartford cover. She's an excellent songwriter, and the playing on the album is fantastic.
      The music stand is for my son. He uses it when practicing ukulele. I can't even play the triangle.
      Sorry for the incredibly delayed response, Hedley. I hope your 2024 is off to a good start. Cheers ✌

      Thank you for your list! I have seen the album by The Arcs mentioned a couple of other places. I’ll investigate. I’m a big Wilco fan, and I do like the new album. Love the production on it, but just don’t think the songs are their strongest. I did listen to the Kassi Valazza album based on a recommendation from another VC pal. It was good, but didn’t gel with me on that level. Objectively, though, yes. It’s a very strong album. Thanks for hanging out with me here and Happy Holidays! ✌🏻

    l've never given Durand Jones much of a chance because of the reasons you give about modern soul music, but after your glowing review l'll consider this album... l like the sound of High Pulp, is it an all instrumental affair?

    • @TheDigitalGramophone
      @TheDigitalGramophone  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Sherv! Sorry for the ridiculous delay in response time. I think sometimes the story behind the music is very important, and can definitely tilt the scale on one's opinion of it - for better or worse. The inspiration behind the Durand Jones album is what encouraged me to listen to it more. I think it's fantastic. But, I also understand if it doesn't gel with everyone. Yes, the High Pulp is all instrumental. I think you'd really like the Blue Lake album. Although, it is limited and an import.

    Was expecting the Yo La Tengo to rank higher. Will be interested to see how Fly or Die go after losing Branch. So many directions they can go as diverse as they can play. Geese vocals sound like Jagger a little which is not a bad thing at all. You should have suffered on a school night and gone to Snug Harbor for En Attendant Ana but I also missed it so there is that.

      Yo La Tengo might not even make the Top 20 as time passes. But it was definitely worth mentioning because it was a fantastic return to form. I do regret not seeing En Attendant Ana earlier this year, but such is life. Cheers, Dave! ✌

    Yup - they sounded like REM fronted by Richard Thompson. The Margo Cilker sounded like Kate and Anna McGarrigle. I never liked Julien Baker solo, but she is great on the Boygenius record. I keep seeing in print people put the Sufjan on the their top 10, but I didn't even realize he released a record in 2023 - still have it on my list to sample.

      Man. I really overlooked some comments lately. I also think I’m not getting notifications like I used to. I couldn’t agree more on Julien Baker. Even being a fan of music she sounds similar to, I thought her first two albums were kind of boring. I haven’t listened to her third. It might be better, but her contributions to Boygenius are incredible. Hope all is well on the farm, Kris. Rectifying my missed comments today! Cheers ✌🏻

    Have you heard the debut studio album, Cause For Alarm by Squeaky Feet, released November 2023. For me it’s easily the most inventive awe inspiring album I’ve heard for a long time. Would say it’s progressive, jazzy psychedelic, trance/funk with improvisation 😊

    Pretty dissapointed to find NEITHER the Blue Lake nor Sumos is on CD. A poor trend in my opinion. It's true a download is just as good, I'm just not gonna remember a doenload because I put it on the front seat. Also I just sold cds for 100 cash today, can't sell the dl if it doesn't stick. Geese and that band with guitar you liked so much didn't stick. Also where's WILCO, yo!

    • @TheDigitalGramophone

      I agree the lack of CD production is unfair. But vinyl is trendier. We also know the source audio for these albums was more than likely not analogue. It is an interesting dilemma that bands/artists face. Do they order 500 CDs or 100 vinyls (that one’s for you). Still at a 7.5 on Cousins.

    I love earlier releases from Boygenius, and I am a fan of each members solo releases on their own, but couldn't get into the new Boygenius album, as much as I wanted to like it. However, to imply there might be men who don't enjoy Boygenius because of misogyny is pretty darn weak (read: pathetic). I was really enjoying your video until you "Went there" on that typical baseless liberal crap. I see you didn't mention The National as you favorite album of the year. Do you hate men?
