    Hello Sir! Thank you for introducing me to Rachel and Polar! Those sound fantastic. I used to love Leftover Salmon years ago. Back in my college days. They had a cd called The Nashville Sessions that was amazing. They covered John Hartford on that and that was my introduction to him. Great to see you. Hope you and your family have a great Holiday season!
    Cheers,
    Brian☘️

      I think you will definitely enjoy those Mighty Poplar and Rachel Baiman albums, Brian. A bunch of really good country/Americana albums this year. I've been listening to a lot more of that genre again this year. I've never given Leftover Salmon a ton of attention, but of course, very aware of their presence. Great to hear from you, Brian. I hope all is well your way! Cheers, brother ✌

    Great video, sir. The intro was awesome - I don’t know how to do this cool stop edits! I’m going to def check Colored Lights because the band name drops really have my ant tension and I like the song you played.

    I only know the Yussef Dayes album out of this lot. I’m always impressed by the number of new releases you pick up each year. I just keep buying the same mouldy old records. Nice clips.

      I'm still not listening to as much new music as I did like 10 years ago. This year, I have been sampling more. I'm back in a habit of listening to more music and less podcasts in the car. That helps. I've streamed way more music than I've bought physically - as far as new releases go. My end goal is to decide which 10 albums I need from any new year. Stream more, buy less vinyl. I see you laughing, John. Go ahead. 😎🤣

      I've seen the new AmAnSet on Instagram from some other folks, but Sam is the only other person I've seen show it in videos. Hope you have a great weekend. I forgot to tell you on your video, that your music room is looking fantastic in the background. Jealous! ✌

    Totally agree on the Kelela. Just missed my top 100 but definitely in my honorables list. I got to see Megafaun open for Mountain Goats once, always wondered what happened to them. I’ll give that Mighty Poplar a shot.

    Love the opening. End of the year already. I am planning on doing a year end video - I’ll probably put it out at noon today so I can at least beat some of the publications to it. I think I say “Frode” differently every time I make the poor decision of attempting to say it out loud. I need to give that Javelin record another listen. I have heard some folks unhappy with For Forever - not what they were wanting, I guess. I think it is a solid effort for sure. Hope all is well. Cheers!

      I really like those year-end videos you've done the last few years. People say to me, "I'm so impressed with the amount of new music you listen to." Nothing compared to you. The Douche Seal of Approval will be well represented in my year-end video. Javelin is really good. That said, not something that I feel you're missing out on if you don't give it that much attention. Like I said, it's very Sufjan. I'm hoping AmAnSet changes their mind and tours. Really looking forward to the Numero box. Cheers, Sam!

    Saw Sam show the Colored Lights, thought that was pretty good. So far from what you've showed here that I didn't know, the Yusef Dayes is delivering the goods. In fact really liking it. It may end up in the house. The AMANSET continues to win me over. It is indeed a surprising record from a band most have forgotten about, even the fans of theirs. Don't know how many will care but that fact that it appears sold out says something. It doesn't rank as good as their early work but there's gold in there. The track you played probably my fav. My list may be quite short this year but my favorite records would rank as the best in the last decade me thinks.

    • @TheDigitalGramophone
      @TheDigitalGramophone  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the Yussef Dayes album is really good. Again, a lot of music, so not everything has sunk in. But it definitely puts out great vibes. I'm looking forward to a Top 10 of 2023 from you, Dom. I know a couple that will show up there. I will probably have a Top 20. I don't know about the last decade, but I definitely think 2023 has provided the best output of the 2020s so far. Easily. But, that kind of makes sense to me considering what the universe has delivered us since 2020.

    Love that intro 🤩 my word you get around the new music. Don't know how you do it among all your other full time jobs. And secondly, you have a great set of ears (trying not to make things weird here) - nothing you've shown/sampled (thanks for getting them in) that doesn't sound like quality. Vibing on the Bluegrass sounds here. Noting that Paradise Of Bachelors getting more mentions than Bobo Integral as well, sounds like a purple patch for both. So the whole American analog set has that fuzz bass tone? I dig the sample! Second time watching and I still can't remember most artist names to reference so I'll just say this: your descriptions are bang on and the samples back them up perfectly. The weight of your words will determine which artists we'll see again soon in your top lists; nice bit of sizzle at the end on that list for the artists you've not shown yet 😉 as always, really enjoy your videos, sir!

    • @TheDigitalGramophone

      I listen to music at work. That's how I do it. 🤣 I've really been diving back into the acoustic sounds this year. Folk, Americana, Alt-Country schtuff. Again, not a ton, but more than in recent years. I would say that fuzz bass is there for most of the AmAnSet album, yes. His vocals are really forward and at times seething. Yes, seething. There's some anger in this record. It's very interesting. I think 2023 has provideth, Dean. There's been some great new releases this year. Miss your videos, but always appreciate your support! Hope all is well out your way. Cheers! ✌

    The American Analog Set with a suprising contender for Top Album of 2023 but Shoegazers Slowdive edge them out with Everything Is Alive. Yesterday , The Detroit Lions 🦁 & Los Angeles Chargers played the game of the year & the soon to be Super Bowl 🏈 champions Lions prevailed on a walk-off field goal. The Ballad Of Darren by Blur is my # 3 of 2023 btw. 🍻

    Good morning Jon. I appreciate you taking the time out to show some oft these off the radar {for me} releases. I really liked what I heard from Mighty Poplar. It sparks bluegrass indeed. I also appreciated hearing about Sufjan Stevens. I am only familiar with one or two songs. But I do remember the appreciation that you have shared in previous videos when it comes to his music. If the music is as good as the album cover I am sure that it will be a winner. >< Where did I hear Colored Lights? I am trying to think who showed it. I think the singer also appreciated Brian Wilson and the BB's. Anyways. Will check it out. Way to go Jon. Loved the update~

    Maybe Colored Lights will grow on you. Yussef Days sounds great. I'll stream that one for sure. You mentioned a couple records that were maybe a bit too long - I'm a strong believer in less is more. Some bands could shorten the songs/record just by repeating the chorus 5 times instead of 10. Thanks for showing the records!

      Don't get me wrong, Randy. I like the Colored Lights album. It just has it's flaws. The Yussef Dayes is really great. I was little fixated on runtime this video. I think it's something I've been thinking about more in my daily listening. It does tend to affect how much attention I give an album. Great to hear from you. Hope all is well! ✌

    Jon, I am plan on posting my favorites of 2024 next month. I might as well jump everyone. Sam just showed that last album, from the Analog group, I keep wanting to say Analog productions. Someday I need to try Stevens, I really have not delved into his music. Really enjoyed the bluegrass samples. Nice opening. OST of the music seemed kind of upbeat, you doing okay?

    • @TheDigitalGramophone

      You better hurry with that list, Steve. Sam is posting his best albums of 2025 this Saturday. Sam did just show the new AmAnSet. I recorded this before he posted. It's nothing like Analog Productions. Sufjan Stevens... I'm not sure if his music is for you. I'm as sad as ever, Steve. Things are going great! Don't you worry. 😎

    Hey Jon!
    I'll have to check out that Rachel Baiman album to hear what she's done to John Hartford's Self Made Man. It was on his unreleased last album for RCA, Radio John. The album finally saw the light of day as a bonus disc with an early 2000s release of his prievious two RCA albums. The album is great, like a dry run for Aereo-Plain. I've never thought of Self Made Man as unfinished, granted it's not got a huge amount of lyrics, but that's like quite a lot of his groovy tunes. Like I said, I'll have to listen to Baiman's version.
    I don't think I've done very well with new records this year. Too many "essential" reissues, and other shizzle took my hard earned over the last 12 months.
    Hedley

      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Update: I've listened to Baiman's version. I think she's added one verse from a woman's perspective. Nice version, although it's not as groovy as Harford's original.

    • @TheDigitalGramophone
      @TheDigitalGramophone  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's funny how somebody shows 9 new releases in a video and that's an oddity in the VC. It's actually kind of sad. I haven't bought as much new music as other folks. I've bought a ton of reissues this year as well. So many, that I'll probably make a "Favorite Reissues of 2023" video. I love the Rachel Baiman album, and the cover is the least impressive thing on the record. Which is usually the case with cover songs.

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheDigitalGramophoneYes, it's a sad situation when people in the VC aren't checking out new stuff. It might be that part of the draw of records is the nostalgia, and that nostalgia is deeply linked to music of the past. So it should be no surprise that we're seeing the trends for reissues. I like to think most new music is being streamed.
      In a double strike for me, the new albums I have bought over the last couple of years are definitely harking back to older musical styles and trends.
      I totally agree that the cover song amongst an album of originals is usually the weakest cut. UK independent country music albums from the 70s and 80s are heavily stacked with covers. Who needs yet another substandard version of Me and Bobby Mcgee? The better albums are the ones with more original compositions.
