I made this yesterday with a Pearl Gray "I Love This Chunky Super Soft" acrylic. It took 2 skeins (3.5 oz - 218 yards total). Using a 6.00MM hook, I chained 56 ( approx. 18 inches) and completed 38 rows (approx. 20 inches) which left me just enough yarn to stitch it up and reinforce the magic circle (no poof for this one). This is a nice long hat that can be folded up once with some slouch, twice to make a thick brim, or once to make a larger brim. Either way it it a beautifully warm hat, with versatility, that can be made for a male or female. I'm going to make another one today in Red Velvet. Fast, easy, and my go to pattern for hats 👍 Thank you for sharing.

It may simply be the yarn you are using. Not all yarns (even if they are classified as the same weight) will work up the same. I would check your gauge and then simply work the foundation chain to the desired length.
