      Brake controller is always a must for small vehicles when you exceed about 3k lbs, and above 5k lbs for larger vehicles. Heck it's the law in some places.

    • @CrowCreekOutdoors
      @CrowCreekOutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@jg8263 Good point. A lot of people don’t much about towing past hooking up the coupler, the safety chains, & the brake lights on the trailer, myself included. To be fair though, folks who buy small trucks don’t tow much more than an ATV or a lawn mower either. I towed a Bobcat skid steer on a 16’ dual axle trailer with a 2001 Tacoma 2wd once. Once. I loaded it too far rear of center. It did not end well.

    I like the Maverick so much I have one on order. It can do 99% of what I need a pick up for. If you want to tow a travel trailer do not buy this vehicle, buy a full size or heavy duty truck. While the Maverick and mid-size trucks can handle their tow rating, you don’t want to be in one when you’re in an open area and crosswinds hit you. I’ve done it in a full-size truck and it’s nerve racking. It would be downright terrifying in a mid-size or compact pickup.

    I haven't done a lot of towing but I used to have a tent trailer that was 2000 lbs and my Nissan Hardbody hauled it OK with some struggling in the mountains, but a brake controller would have been handy. I could notice the difference in stopping distance with the tent trailer connected, so trailer brakes are the way to go. I currently have a 2018 F-150 with the 2.7 and I use it to tow my 2400 lb, 18 ft. travel trailer. It hauls it really well and the gas mileage is pretty good. Thank you so much for this extremely helpful review. I have been pulling a 3,300 pound dry weight Vintage Cruiser RV with a 1991 Mercury Colony Park. Someone finally decided to make a pickup that appears to be quite enjoyable to use a daily driver, but I have been hesitant to pull the trigger not knowing whether the Maverick could genuinely handle the travel trailer. As opposed to Hyundai with the Santa Cruz, Ford knows towing as well as anyone, so in my way of thinking I trust a 4K rating from Ford more than a 5K rating from Hyundai. I think the auto industry is changing some with the introduction to smaller trucks. For years and still to this day, the concept is to go bigger, taller, more power. Yep been there and done that, just traded in the HD and picked up a smaller truck. Love the midsized trucks that are now out. Got tired of simply driving a massive HD through tons of traffic and parking it. Sold the camper and simply moved on, sad to say, most people who drive bigger or larger trucks, really don’t need them… just for show… when are people going to wake up and realize, that it’s a big waste of money if your not working that truck or pulling on a constant basis. Glad to see smaller trucks making a comeback while doing what 90 percent of the people really need in a truck.

      Couldn't agree more. I hate how big trucks handle and drive. Only reason I'll ever consider one is for their power. You can tell who uses their truck for actual use by how spotless they are. And then they have the nerve to buy the ugliest rims for them and try to flex.

      Or do like I do. I have a 2012 F250 that gets used as a truck for towing, camping and hunting. Then daily a 2013 Ford Focus to jump around traffic and gets almost 40 mpg.

      As trucks get more and more expensive, the people that want them are starting to be more honest with themselves about what they need it for and why they want it. A lot of them are coming to the conclusion that they don’t actually need an expensive full size pickup that’s hard to park and rough on gas just so they can haul air around for $60,000. The little inconveniences that come with owning a truck they don’t actually need are starting to catch up to the customers.

We have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara unlimited with 2000# towing and when pulling my boat it sucks, can't see the boat backing up with the spare tire and I'm looking for a daily to replace my old 1991 Nissan Hardbody with over 360,000 miles on it. Still a good truck but it's at the point of rebuild it or replace it.

    Pretty impressive towing for such a small vehicle. If i tried to approach the 5k lb limit in my pilot you would know you're at its limit and only get about 4-5 mpg. I get 11mpg with it towing about 2800lbs for reference and really dont think it should tow much more than that.

      @@gamatoutsikos yes it does, my pilot is just the closest comparison i have experienced to the Maverick, and similar tow rating. I also have a f350 6.7 diesel i use to tow heavy loads, pilot is good for family trips with the toys in tow. The maverick seems to tow heavier better with a lower rating so its pretty impressive. I wouldnt tow that camper with a pilot even though its rated to handle it.

      That is the drawback of a V6 Or 4. They are hard on fuel when towing a trailer with huge frontal area. I know from Towing with my Tacoma. I traded for a Tundra. I can achieve 18 L/100 kms towing our Rockwood Roo.

    There are a lot of camping trailers that are ultralight that weigh under 4000 pounds, so there’s really no limitations. I do wish that maybe they could’ve gotten 5000 out of this Truck. But 4000 is still not a small number you can definitely still tow all your toys that you have.

    Hello guys! Once again nice test. Especially considering being so heavy. As is very close to the CGVWR, especially with in all honesty over 400 lbs of passengers, including the 400 lbs tongue weight. So now I’d guess your actually legal for possibly another 200lbs of stuff. Is the Maverick a truck? It’s as much and probably more so then a Ridgeline, at almost 20k less or 10 k fully loaded less!

      Gasoline is a little over 6 lbs per galln and the Maverick will hold 16 gallons so that's 100 lbs. A lot of people who are pullng a trailer will toss a couple 5 gallon cans in the back to assist with the driving range on a tank, which when towing is not much over 200 miles. So you're really pushing it to use a trailer like this. In our experience, the problem with towing with a small truck is braking (also mentioned by others), cross winds, and being passed by semi trucks, especially on twisty roads. You really dont want a pucker experience whe towing a trailer.

    Glad to see the compact truck market back, but I got my 2018 f150 supercab 4x4 with the 3.3 v6 & 3.73 gears with the 302 a XLT package for 30,000$ which has almost everything a lariat has minus the leather. I have 55,000 miles now I got it with 2000 miles and I’m averaging 22 mpg combined and I pull 5000 lbs with it a couple times a week when I’m
    Towing I average around 15/16
    Mpg. I work in construction so I pull small trailers loaded with various construction materials…36,000$ for a compact truck is insane I know it has the all the options but still that’s outrageous…I think the best bang for the buck is the f150s with the V6 you can get them with all the options and it still does what most people need it to do…I used to have a 2001 & a 2005 with the 5.4 but my 3.3 v6 feels way more powerful towing than those 5.4s ever did and I really liked the 5.4
