    That was 101 kills from a handful of Apaches and a single A10, performing a single sortie, with a few of the Apaches being relatively ineffectual for various reasons. If you had full squadrons of both flying and used the option to RTB and rearm, that would be mass carnage. If you staggered flights so that there was always someone over target, all night long, the German forces would be wrecked...even if the kill count wasn't high enough to make a significant dent in the numbers, the psychological impact would be devastating. If the A10 was using different munitions--something to do mass damage instead of pinpoint strikes like the Maverick--and flying with NVGs so they weren't reliant on someone else to light up their targets, or using Apaches to knock out a single tank and leave the rest for an air strike, you'd really be chewing up the German forces.
    Then multiply that by the three nights the Germans were ordered to wait. Although I think those orders would change really fast after the first night.
    But, yes, I think a squadron each of Apache and Warthog in full combat operations would turn the tide. They probably wouldn't win, outright, because that's a huge force to try and wipe out in one night. But they could have broken the German operations to the point that the Allied forces on the field could have carried the battle.

      Agree. We can't forget the losses recorded by the enemy were still significant based on only the ground forces. The multiplying effect of reduced armour, moral, change of tactics required to deal with the night attacks etc. would have made the allied forces ground units more effective.

    "Armor" is relative. A Panzer 4 would only have about 40mm of armor on the sides and 15-20mm on the roof, so your chain gun would punch through easily since it's basically armored like an APC today. Then again DCS doesn't really use the advanced physics for tanks as it does for planes....

    Even in the late '80s, the night vision available to pilots (in the Marine Corps, at any rate) was, according to a friend who flew a CH-53, like looking through two cardboard tubes from rolls of toilet paper. No peripheral vision. There was one really bad midair on 10/25/1988 when I was stationed at MCAS Yuma, AZ - a CH-46 and a Huey collided, and a total of ten people were killed.

    Yes, it would have had a huge effect on morale, both enemy and allied. The attack would have undoubtedly saved allied lives as well. Wouldn't have changed the ultimate result of the battle, Dunkirk still would have been lost, but I doubt that the Nazi's would have attacked the next day, they'd be trying to figure out wtf just happened to a hundred of their tanks. Removing that much heavy armor would have meant that the attacking units would be easier to take out due to that lack of armor and armor support.

    Honestly Should have just loaded the Apaches with the Laser Guided Hydra 70 rockets. Nothing in the German Arsenal in 1940 could defeat a hyrdra 70 pentration. Then you 76 Rockets per Apache vs 16 Hellfire's which are overkill. The 30mm should have had no issues with penetration either on any german tank availible. The real Apache can also carry a pair of AIM-9X sidewinders on the wing tips which would deal with the Aircraft you didn't model.

    • @Lobos222
      @Lobos222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They had AA meant to shoot down aircraft that flew faster and higher than helicopters... This notion they wouldnt be engaged is silly. Heck, Taliban fighters with a PKM have forced Apache to RTB. Then you have the interceptors of the time. While AIM might shoot down a few of them, depending on how they hit considering aluminum fighters with jet engines are more vulnerable to random damage, there would just be too many, I think.

    • @jamison884
      @jamison884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isn't really about the specific number of kills, it's all about the ratio. For example, there were only a few Apache's here and an A-10 pilot would have night vision goggles if not IR from the latest sensor pack on current A-10's. The DCS A-10's just aren't modeled to include the present day electronic package and other improvements made via new variants, including this Apache too. So, they destroyed 20% of the smaller representation of enemy forces. If it's extrapolated for additional Apache's and additional enemies per Apache, then 20% (plus many other casualties) from this night offensive would have had a significant impact on their encirclement of Dunkirk and hesitation from their commanders. Just trying to help, but that's my understanding of what this video implies.

    • @Psychobolic77
      @Psychobolic77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamison884 Yes, but the Germans already outnumbered the Allies 2 to 1 @ Dunkirk & the operation was meant to be a fighting retreat; never meant to be a dig-in and make our last stand type of thing. 20% is significant damage to be sure, and it would have delayed the German advance, but the Allies had already decided to evacuate no matter what.

    I think German WW2 AAA would be very effective against Apaches at night using their spotlights. They could target bomber formations and contemporary fighters I don't think Apaches would be much of a problem. As mentioned they wouldn't have that stuff at the front lines of an offensive...but I'd love to see the Reapers have a go at German night flak and spotlights (which are in DCS?). Maybe an Apache night raid against a German airbase/city?

    • @void870
      @void870 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Apaches would definitely have an advantage with being able to fly much lower than fixed wing aircraft and target the AAA guns from further out than the WWII planes. And the advantage of advanced night vision would make spotting the AAA guns much easier.

    • @mikalcobbs9402
      @mikalcobbs9402 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AAA during WW2 used fused shells that had to be fused for different altitudes. They’re also usually pointed at the sky to hit bombers. It would take time to refuse shells, retrain the AAA guns and spot them. In their gulf storm configuration from the early 90’s AH64 could easily fly low altitude, pop top laser a target and launch a hellfire missile from 5 miles away, hit their target and then drop back down below the horizon line and reposition. Destroy anti air in this method and then wrap up tanks and infantry with rocket and 20mm auto cannon fire.

    • @christophero55
      @christophero55 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True the Apaches have many advantages with their technology and tactics, but that doesn't make them invulnerable. The Germans didn't just use flak they also had auto canon AAA. Yes the Apaches can fly very low and pop up and all that...but no one is going to fly perfectly, have perfect situational awareness etc. My suggestion is to see exactly how effective the Apaches would be against WW2 German AAA...I don't expect that AAA to easily defeat the Apaches but it does still present a challenge and I would like to see how the Reapers handle it. We saw Apaches get shot down during this very mission. Granted, the enemy should not have been able to spot them at night, but the point is even old technology can be very dangerous. Its true that the Apaches can target AAA from a distance but are they going to know exactly where it all is? Might they stray into an area where some is still active? If their primary target is say, German aircraft parked on the runway/fuel tanks, are they going to have enough ordinance to destroy all the AAA in the way AND take out the primary target? I think a lot of things could happen in such a scenario...would love to see how it played out.

    Fantastic mission! Night life wow. And you're right, enemy morale would be compromised, but I feel it wouldn't slow the Axis down. If anything, it would speed up Axis encirclement, to 'hug' the Allies, as Axis forces rush towards their wounded, knowing full well, Allied ground forces have their backs to the sea.
    So perhaps a replay with the following changes, please?
    Do not go to Dunkirk (Waypoint 2). Meet & greet not required. The enemy is in a crescent formation, with two tips jutting out on either side. Please hit one of the tips and follow "through" the crescent shape. Choose one will do- Either from Calais or De Panne. Less IFF problems. Concentration of force. And you will 'relieve' the pressure off Allied ground defenders flank (either left/right), compounding an "orderly" retreat.
    The team purposefully flies CAS platforms, excellent choice. Cut Axis armour, artillery, trucks, and legs. Buy Allied ground forces time. Prioritise the situation they are presently in.
    Mind you, the plan of "fanning out" from the middle, to engage the enemy, isn't bad- No, Sir.. But if Allied ground forces had their rear to the sea, they'd take comfort knowing that at least 1 flank is clear of Axis, thanks to CAS.
    Great content and what a fab team, more please. Cheers.

    As suggested, a devastating effect. Looking at the night vision it would have been possible to selectively eradicate artillery, command positions, PIIIs and PIVs, also to use the gunships' sensor arrays to spot for land based artillery. That effectively means the Germans wouldn't have been able to have any rest at all within miles of the front line, given that their lead elements had been running on little sleep and rest the casualties, CnC degradation and destruction of primary equipment would have turned the tide.

    wouldn't rockets be more efficient than the hellfires?

    • @Kaelland
      @Kaelland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hellfires give better standoff than rockets (11km for Hellfires versus 4 to 8 km max effective range for rockets, depending on type).
      Add to that the fact that most rockets are unguided (although there are laser guided rockets IRL, but they don't appear to be modeled in DCS and available for the Apache, though).
      Plus, a lot of rockets, especially a lot of the smaller rockets like the Hydra may not have the oomph to penetrate thicker armor such as what's found on a tank, especially the front of a tank where the armor is the thickest and angled to help deflect incoming rounds. Hydra rockets are designed more for lightly armored or unarmored vehicles and anti-personnel functions.
      Plus, it can be hard to fire rockets with a really high degree of accuracy. But Hellfires are laser guided, so as long as you're holding your laser on target and you're in range, they're almost guaranteed to hit (laser code conflicts notwithstanding).
      Now, IF you could guarantee something close to 100% accuracy with Hydra rockets while maintaining standoff distance, and IF you could guarantee kills with 4 hits or less, then yes, they would probably be a better choice. Each LAU-61 pod carries 19 rockets, and each Apache can carry 4 pods. If you could get that 1-hit kill on a tank with them, you could potentially rack up 76 kills per gunship. Even if it took 4 hits, you'd be looking at a potential of 19 kills per helicopter.
      As soon as you need a 5th hit to get a kill, though, you're dropping yourself to 15 potential kills per airframe, at which point, you're better off carrying a full load of 16 Hellfires.
      I just ran a simulation with 3 AI driven Apaches each carrying 4 LAU-61 pods and set them on 5 WWII era Panzer tanks in DCS. Every one of them fired salvos of 16 rockets, missed with every salvo until they got close, got shot up with the MGs mounted on the German tanks, kept firing 16-shot salvos, and eventually killed the tanks. Interestingly enough, the kills were scored after landing two or three rockets on each tank.
      So yes, it might be a viable strategy if you can get high enough accuracy with your rockets. But the way the AI does it, even at Ace skill level, is trash.

    • @xxxxCronoxxxx
      @xxxxCronoxxxx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kaelland i did not realize that rockets were that short range.
      that being said the effective range of the 88 against air at that time was roughly 8km, im not sure what the next step down was for the germans but the brit 40mm pom pom (which should be pretty close to any 40 mm AA they had at the time) had an effective range of just under 4km and the 2cm flak only had an effective range of 2.2km
      as for armor penetration, the pz3 had at best 60mm or armor but probably only 30mm, and the pz4 only had 20mm at best, at the time
      this is 1940. the bar is pretty low and we are throwing weapon systems that are almost 40 years more advanced then them at them and doing it at night.

Also when in the target area, lead slows down, #2 goes right, #3 goes left and so on for the whole formation until they form line abreast, then they can all move forward and sweep the area covering then largest space. Deconflicts flight paths and weapons. Increase safety and killing power.

The Gloster Meteor was only a few years away and easily redesigned to fill an A-10 role akin to the RAAF using them in ground attack in Korea. At least half of these machines could be kept running until they ran out of consumables but at least contemporary ammo and fuel could be upgraded to suit. By the time there are no longer enough combat effective aircraft the technological leapfrog would more than hand the Allies an advantage.
