    Steady as she goes Stu! If there is any "foam" in those Keel spaces at all-dry out will be almost impossible. What water remains inside will only add weight to your hull. You both are doing a patient job to get most of the water out. Let her sit with the holes open while you do more topside. You can even complete the rest of the upper hull's work down to the Bilge turn of the keel. By then it will be as dry as its ever going to be. THEN you add your Epoxy to seal the Voids. In a month or so that will do just nicely! Cheers for you both---good buy on that main'sl. Rich

    Thats a lot of work on the keel to accomplish little. Jut cut it open, dry it out, fill with whatever you think is good and glass it up. Save a lot of time and have a much better job.

    From a 52 year old guy in KCMO, a long ways from the ocean. I think my midlife crisis is to go sailing with my wife of course. I watch about 5 different sailing videos, and Sailing Seabird has become my favorite! I missed the Waygoose videos, but I really enjoyed the struggle of making old new again. Good job.

    Hello, I see on the internet it says acetone will soften fiberglass resin. Maybe investigate that before putting acetone in the keel.

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why we've been using iso alcohol.

  • @jasongray7683
    @jasongray7683 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Acetone would probably be even more effective for the internal water removal than the isopropyl alcohol. Acetone aggressively dissolves with and evaporates water. Drilling an even larger top hole for the hoover connection would also get much more airflow moving behind fiberglass. Suction rather than pressure might also be good more moving more air.

    • @andrewseaman7012
      @andrewseaman7012 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doen't acetone dissolve hardened resin?

    • @pilks4k
      @pilks4k ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewseaman7012 It breaks down resin yep would take a few months of soaking but it takes seconds for foam to dissolve which is sometimes used in keel spaces too, you would be best to heat the air in the keel after using to evaporate the acetone.

    • @user-tr2yx2yp4q
      @user-tr2yx2yp4q ปีที่แล้ว

      I read on internet that an acetone "soak" will soften the fiberglass resin. I don't know if this is true or not.

    I admire your resilience! Regarding the moisture in the keel: open up the top of the keel in the bilge, with several apertures. That makes drying out more feasible, with a forced airflow top down. The water probably came in via the bilge, so the inside of the keel/bilge should be glassed over anyway after drying.

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea.

    When the boat was built the ballast was added being one piece or ingots the voids were filled with whatever and the top was glassed over. Cut a big hole on top of the keel inside the boat, or as many as needed, (save these pieces to refill the holes) let the keel dry out then pour resin on top of the ballast to fill any voids letting it find its own level. and then re-fibreglass the top, job done.

    It's often going to be hit and miss with certain jobs especially on hull and keel, however as it is said slowly slowly catchy monkey. Just remember every job completed is a step closer to the finished product. Another great video, thank you guys. xx

  • @jimnihart5441
    @jimnihart5441 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You guys should try going the other way and get an air compressor with a nozzle attached to force the water out rather than trying to air dry the keel with the vacuum or sucking the water out. Since there is no outside air movement inside the keel, it's going to take forever to get the water to evaporate.

    see if the yard has a vacuum pump setup you can borrrow. If you vacuum bag the keel with polyethylene sheet and butyl tape you can essentially boil any standing water out at ambient temps and suck out the water vapor out at the same time.

    The only correct repair is to open the keel from the inside, pull out the ballast, rinse and glue it with fiberglass. Then move the ballast back and glue. Everything you do will not give any result, but will only take time and money.

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. The Ballast is set in concrete so it would be a huge job. Try and find 3 tonnes of lead, then set in polyester. Not impossible but I doubt we'll do it. No plans to go anywhere cold so no real worries.

    I wonder if you could seal all the holes, install a temporary fitting, and pull a vacuum on the keel? The vacuum will boil off the water inside and dry it out. This is the process used in air conditioning when removing air and moisture in a hermetically sealed system. I don't know if the keel is sealed enough to cause the pressure to drop to cause water to boil, but I've seen vacuum applied to other applications and it seems to work. You might have to find a larger CFM pump to create enough vacuum. Just an idea.

  • @Mainforce66

    An idea, might be stupid, leave 2 holes, one at the top of the keel one right at the bottom, close off all others. Make the holes so you can screw/glue french bike vaules into them, pumb it fill of air and release it via the bottom one, pressing out most of the water with the air. if you have a compresser, you can bump into the top one whilst releasing it from the bottom..

    Problems for a lot of companies delivering to the continent from the UK these days...... It's almost as if there was some major event that split the UK from the rest of Europe.... sorry... I'll get my coat.

      Oh...
      I was wondering 🤔
      I honestly didn't think that.
      We got the piece from Ireland.
      Selfishly I've got my part, don't mind where it comes from.
      Some company got a sale.
      But yes, our liberty comes at a price.
      Not to get political as I don't live in England.

    Why don't you cut a rectangular stripe of glass out of the keel, fix it property, taper the edges sufficiently and reglass it? That may be easier and cheaper and you do not encapsulate water in the laminate.

    I find alcohol and a blowy usually work pretty good for me😂

    Trying to Hoover water uphill to the hole..... na, Hoover the bottom hole and inject alcohol in the top thus dragging said water out like a colon cleansing ahhhhh

  • @FromThePrairies
    @FromThePrairies ปีที่แล้ว

    The alcohol isn’t a bad idea as it will evaporate away and take water with it. Someone else suggested acetone, but I don’t know how that would react with the epoxy. Regardless, I think you’re on the right path short of grinding off the bottom of the keel and rebuilding it.

    Hello, Another interesting video. How do you plan on getting the old shaft out of the rudder and installing the new one? George from Pompano Beach, Florida.

    I was waiting with bated breath for keel to lift off to kingdom cum, having filled it with alcohol and adding sparks from vacuum cleaner.
    Any remaining alcohol in the void is still an explosive mixture looking for an ignition source .

    Proposal to Purchase or Rent Dry Air Equipment for SEABIRD To the SEABIRD Team, I would like to propose that we consider acquiring dry air equipment, such as a MUNTERS MG 50, to effectively dry the keel and potentially the entire boat in the future when we have access to shore power. Here are some reasons why this would be a beneficial investment: 1. Efficient Drying: Dry air systems, especially professional units like the MUNTERS MG 50, are known for rapidly and effectively drying damp surfaces. This would be highly advantageous in preventing corrosion and damage to the keel and the boat due to moisture. 2. Cost-Effectiveness: By investing in dry air equipment, we can avoid the high costs associated with renting equipment each time we need to dry the boat. Additionally, we can consider purchasing used equipment to further reduce costs. 3. Flexibility: Owning our own dry air equipment provides us with the flexibility to use it at our convenience, without relying on external rental companies. 4. Long-Term Investment: Dry air equipment is not only useful for keel drying but can also be used for boat maintenance and drying as needed. This makes it a long-term investment in the health and longevity of the boat. I propose that we conduct a thorough investigation into available dry air equipment options, including used units, and carefully weigh the costs and benefits before making a decision. Thank you for your attention. Best regards, Tony

    Anyone know how to buy from the Amazon wishlist in English? I can switch my Amazon account to France and order, but can’t read French😆…. Evidently the French site does not have an English option. What to do? Is there another app that can accomplish this?
