    Marina, I think the paint, repairs and new windows look great. I know had at the end of the day work can feel disappointing if everything didn't go quite right but in the light of the a day it often doesn't seem so bad. However slowly it feels at times you guys are getting there.

    I enjoy your channel very much; in fact it's the only boat repair channel I've ever found that i truly relate to. Back in the day I spent nearly two years restoring a 39' William Hand wooden ketch. Took way longer and cost way more than I thought lol. But I can appreciate what you guys are doing. Thanks for sharing!

    Must admit, I’m on the “fill the keel holes and move on” for breakfast club 😅. Once the bottom and it’s hardware are finished it will buoy your spirits, and Stu will be able to put in his rear view mirror. A Distant memory 👍.

    A very interesting episode this week. You guys are really making progress - it seems like you are going backwards but you're not! Great decision to really attack the keel with some larger holes so you can see what you're dealing with and can soon put the keel work behind you. Keep up the great work

    Suggestion on drying out the interior of the keel. Drill a hole the size of the exterior of you vacuum (hoover) hose. Attach one end of the hose to the exhaust of the vacuum and the other to the hole in the keel. Turn the vacuum on and force the air through the keel and out through all the holes you've already drilled. This may take about 8 hours but it should help to dry the interior of the keel. Then I'd inject liquid epoxy into the top holes first and when it starts running out the bottom side holes tape off the hole. By filling from top to bottom it should encapsulate the steel that is rusting inside. By sealing it from both water and air it can't rust any more.

    I hope you are not planning to match the diamond non-slip pattern! I built powerboats for over 20 years and I always hated it when the design staff used the diamond pattern. It's virtually impossible to repair and match the original pattern. If you have not already made the decision to do so, I STRONGLY recommend that you sand all the diamond pattern non-slip flat, mask off the areas, and lay down a sand finish non-slip. It can be easily done by mixing gelkote, or whatever you finish coat will be with readily available materials made specifically for the purpose.

    Rust might be from the iron punching in the concrete ballast?

  • @MaxPivovarov
    @MaxPivovarov ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think you could try to dry the keel using a vacuum pump. To do this, you need to close all the holes (can be temporarily) leaving only on the top of keel open. Insert a fitting into this top hole to connect to the pump and pump air out from the keel. Since the lower the pressure is, the lower the boiling temperature of the water will be inside the keel and therefore the water inside in keel will begin to boil at ambient temperature. If outside temperature is not high enough, you can wrap a cheap electric heated blanket around the keel. Just don't forget to put a container to collect water before pump so that the spilling water does not get into the pump. You can use a vacuum chamber for it and also you can insert another fitting in it to connect to the keel. As soon as the pressure inside the keel stops growing, it will be a signal that all the water has boiled out. Then you could use the same pump to fill the keel with epoxy. To do that you would need to make another hole in the bottom of the keel and fill epoxy through this bottom hole while pumping out the air through the top hole. Just make sure you pump out the air first before pushing the epoxy inside, it will help to better distribute the epoxy inside the keel. If you have questions, please let me know.

      @robinwells8879 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use dry nigrogen gas gently passing through but you would need to ventilate internally if staying on board or better still decamp to a different sleeping place. Personally I am of the leave it well alone and let it dry out via the same path it wetted.

    Watching the section on the keel is familiar. I had patches of my encapsulated keel which had become delaminated. I drilled in these areas and like you came across fluid with sand and rust. The sand comes from a fairly weak cement mix which is used as a bedding for a cast iron ballast core which is the source of the rust. It was clear that the keel wasn't going to dry without getting a lot of hot dry air into it so I took the top off my encapsulated keel underneath the cabin sole and exposed a network of voids between the cast iron core and the grp sides of the keel. On the sides of the keel, I ground out the delaminated areas which resulted in some pretty big holes some of which were the size of small plates right through to the ballast. I left the keel for several months allowing it really dry out. The sides were then laid up, faired and barrier coated. The voids in the keel were filled from the top with multiple pours of a slow curing epoxy. Using a hammer I tracked areas of the keel as it changed from tapping hollow to solid. Any remaining voids were filled using syringes from holes drilled in the side of the keel (boxes of 100 syringes can be purchased cheaply from Amazon). The keel is now dry and solid.

  • @glenndavis479
    @glenndavis479 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Stuart rusting steel expands when encapsulated with concreate and I would assume that the rust colour you have there is an indication that you may have concreate blow out occurring...how far along it is is anyone's guess and it may even have aided the delamination of the glass. I think at some point you are going to have to cut out a section of the glass to see what's happening with the concreate behind it , maybe the area where the rust colour appeared at first , if the concreate is moist through then no amount of pissy little holes is going to dry it out...rust blow out and delamination will continue , you can repair rust blow out in concreate it's not that difficult but only IF you address it.

    The orcas off the Iberian Peninsula are getting skillful at disabling rudders with biting and ramming. It seems to be the only place where the problem exists. Rudder construction could be improved with metal instead of fiberglass. Design with hinge points at top and bottom would make sturdier orca resistance. It could be advantageous to reinforce the fiberglass inside where the rudder shaft enters the hull being prone to cracking when rammed by orcas. Sometimes the damage results in sinking.

  • @bobadam7021
    @bobadam7021 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Progress is being made! I thought about welding and polishing out that rudder shaft, but I didn't think you'd have the welder to do that,and by the time you paid someone in France to do the work, you'd be about halfway to the rudder post cost, and down several days of labor. It's a judgement call, and really I don't think you could have made a wrong decision on that.

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  ปีที่แล้ว

      We were hoping we could save the rudder shaft.
      But, no. Better to rebuild with a new shaft.

  • @Cheers_Warren

    I see you removed the gelcoat , remember the epoxy ‘barrier paint’ is not designed to be a replacement for gelcoat but an additional protection for gelcoat.
    You should probably coat with a layer or 2 of epoxy and fiberglass cloth , then layers of epoxy resin before the barrier coat.
    Cheers Warren

    Hi, there's some information on the web which suggests the keel of early '70s Gulfstar 41 is filled with iron chunks embedded in concrete. I thought you already knew... There is no lead inside, just iron and cement. Which explains both the rust and the sand, and it also may interfere with your moisture meter. I think drying it up completely may be impossible. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with sailboats apart from watching some TH-cam channels 😅, so I have no good advice - maybe you should keep to Jack's opinion and leave it like it was 🙂Apparently, he got away with it 😉Apart from that ongoing problem: You two are doing a great job! It's a pleasure watching your videos and seeing you steadily fixing + upgrading your home! You are awesome! ❤

    ..... you state a concern of having content .... in some of your videos you share clips of adventures you get on. Capturing surrounding areas when out on your bike or day excursions gives you practice getting content from not only boat jobs for when you splash and set sail for new horizons .... love your videos and mighty impressed with your outcome of all the primmered repairs. .... something I saw Bret and Jade use when they were doing all the sanding on the inside of their boat was what I will call a vortex bucket that goes in-line between the nozzle and the vacuum thus not all the dust ends up in the vac-bag. Stuart could build one with a 5 gallon pail and lid, 90 degree plumbing elbow the size of vac hose for the in side for the hole in the lid closest to the rim and a second hole in the middle of the lid that is home to the hose that goes to the vacuum ... things sure are coming along nicely ... thx for the share .... as always .... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

I still think it’s possible to rebuild her, I’m just thinking “this isn’t going to go quickly” would be nice if you could separate a clean dry comfortable place to live, some degree of luxury, and then go to work on her without being forced to clean up enough to live in? I have no idea if the yard allows that?

    What if yo reverse the air flow on the vacuum and blow it into the large keel hole you drilled and make it warm air maybe it would evaporate and force moisture out the other holes ?..

    Friday with new Video :-) I'm happy. Last week i looked all your old videos starting from Solent going through the canals. I'm very interested in canal videos because i plan to go from Hamburg through canals to Donau and Black Sea. Because of Rhine current i need to go throuhg river Maas, French channels Nancy, Straßburg an then Rhine downwards to Main. Keep on going :-) I'll continue watching...

    Very nice job, you're almost a pro, when you have got all these new skills you hopefully newer have to use them again, other than for good advice, and the bragging rights.

    Great video! Every little thing you do moves the project forward. 😎 We had a similar problem with our rollers disintegrating whilst priming and switched to mohair rollers. So far, so good. 😎😎😎👍❤️

    Try compressed air from the top down. Blast 100 psi. into the space. Mabey if you pour alcohol into the top, then blow it through with air out the bottom. Just a thought.

    You can get a vacuum pump connect it on hole, it will suck out all moisture from in side faster

    Guys, the fact that there’s water is still in the keel indicates to me that the hull is/was watertight and it’s the remains of the internal flooding with rainwater. The drying will therefore happen from within over time. The metal of the keel is inevitably going to have corrode somewhat in the presence of that water. Seal it back up and take a chill pill😂
    Make sure that the rudder shaft is bonded to the rudder hull penetration to prevent the same crevice corrosion to the new shaft over its next 40 years. 😂

    Don't know if it would be worth it, but they make rust converter, it basically turns rust into primer, if you drill enough holes to spray it inside and let it run down the keel, you may get enough in to stop the rust.
