Tammy's Reef

  • Visit this beautiful 800-g in-home reef with me. 10' x 4' x 32" with a 200g Melev's Reef sump beneath. As with any reef, it's a work in progress with more features being added often. The light rack system uses a hidden winch to adjust the height. Tammy feeds her babies often, and they follow her around as she tends to its needs. The noise level you hear in this video really isn't anywhere near as obvious as it seems - ambient noise levels are pretty normal at 32db, but the iPhone microphone makes it seem much louder. Talking in the livingroom was comfortable (I really have to buy some external microphones!) and quiet. An interesting point to me is that Tammy has figured out animal husbandry without the assistance of other hobbyists, forums or a club to turn to.

Simply amazing, this is what reef keeping and fish husbandry is all about. I love how she is all about the care of the animals and their needs first. Such a great couple, thanks for sharing with us.

Tammy and Eric did a decibel test last night. Near the tank it measured 32db. In a closet with absolutely no noise, 12db. When their tv is playing, 57db. The point? My iPhone's microphone is the noise level I was referring to in the video, and if I'd used wired or wireless mics it would have been a better sounding interview. When you are there in person it's not noisy at all. Heck, a dead silent reef makes me very uncomfortable, not unlike any parent that knows their kids are up to no good when it's way too quiet all of a sudden. That's when we know something's wrong and needs attention. Hopefully this makes sense. There, I feel better now. - Marc

She really needs to put anemones in the clown tank instead of those plastic corals.
Also, it's strange how big fish can make a giant tank like this look small!

Just curious with all the planning, why didn't you simply move the loud pumps into the basement or another room?

There are no basements in Texas. Concrete slabs on bedrock (limestone). The tank isn't loud at all; that just what the camera's microphone picked up unfortunately. The follow up video will use lavalier mics that will be far better.

I run a dehumidifier to help reduce the humidity levels since it's not enclosed. I loose about 3 to 5 gallons every 2 days depending on time of year - as heat runs, more evaporation. Humidity in the house runs between 32% and 47%.

Amazing tank.I wish I had the dedication for something like that. I personally love the black tang in there. I have seen them fetch over $1000 in my LFS.
I have a few comments please don't take them the wrong way. They are just some suggestions to help out.
A tank this large I would never use an acrylic sump. I would use a polypropylene sump. Much cheaper to make and way more durable.I would also never place it under a tank that large. It just makes it impossible to do anything as far as maintenance (as you mentioned). Plus alot of equipment is in a remote location anyway. I'm not sure why it even needs to be there. Unless there is not enough room to pitch the drains back to the remote location (I doubt that is the case)>
The plumbing and pump setup seems very inefficient. I would have opted for a larger pentair pump with digital controls. I cant tell if their is a closed loop just for water movement. You could just have 1 dedicated smaller pump for a closed loop system for flow and 1 large pump with a sump and equipment in a remote location.
Also, having a chiller outside is kind of a waste. I would have just used a heat exchanger and connected it directly to the central A/C condensing unit of the home. Less equipment and less room for failure.
I'm not sure if they hired someone professional to design this system for them. But if they did, I wouldn't be too happy.
That's just the tip of the Iceberg. Being an engineer in the commercial field I always try to find innovative ways to improve things. But something this large I would want to make sure everything is as efficient as possible.
